Nite/Night
[edit]Shouldn't the title be changed to reflect the Nite used by the Five Satins? 66.210.186.171 22:55, 5 February 2007 (UTC)
- The song was released by Ember Records in both spellings, "Nite" in 1956 and "Night" in 1961. However, its original spelling on Standord Records was "In The Still Of The Nite", so I would agree with you, the article should be moved. I have listed the article at Wikipedia:Requested moves. Skinsmoke (talk) 20:26, 17 January 2015 (UTC)
- I came here 11 years after the original comment and 3.5 years after the reply which added more detail and said a move request had been made.
- The current article has:
- "In the Still of the Night", also subsequently titled "In the Still of the Nite"
- Skinsmoke's comment above is correct as far as I can tell (details below). I will correct the article text quoted above to have "Nite" as the original title.
- Song release details:
- Original release on Standord XEP-200 with the track title "IN THE STILL OF THE NITE". This was released in April 1956 according to the 45cat.com link: (45cat.com entry, discogs.com entry)
- Reissued on Ember E-1005 with the track title as either "IN THE STILL OF THE NITE" or "IN THE STILL OF THE NIGHT" depending on the issue. This was released in June 1956 according to the 45cat.com link: (45cat.com entry (multiple releases), discogs.com entry with "Nite", discogs.com entry with "Night")
- A comment by the user Twitster at the 45cat.com page for the Ember issue corroborates, though doesn't confirm, that the Standard release is the first issue of the 45.
- Originally appearing on the Standord label, it was initially issued in April, 1956. Shortly thereafter it was leased to Ember/Herald Records and released in June, 1956 for national distribution. Both labels were simultaneously sold in stores at the time.
- Note that seemingly-informed discussion at the the 45cat.com page for the Ember issue also says that the earliest Standord issues had the title as '"I'll Remember" (In The Still Of The Night)'. I have not found artwork like this so this is unverifiable. I add this in hopes that someone can confirm or deny this in the article, as appropriate.
- It looks like the initial Ember issues have "Nite" in the title and that "Night" came later, circa 1961. Verifying this would require more details than I have at hand.

Song referenced in another song
[edit]There was a song out in the 80s I believe that may have been a country song. It was a completely different song, but in it the narrator recalls listening to "in the still of the night" and at that point, the music follows as in the original song, then it goes back to its own melody and lyrics. I can't recall what song this is, but it was a pretty clever integration, and it should probably be mentioned in this article that it referenced it.--Daniel (talk) 16:35, 9 July 2008 (UTC)
Infobox Single needed
[edit]{{Infobox Single <!-- See Wikipedia:WikiProject_Songs --> | Name = In the Still of the Nite | Cover = | Caption = | Artist = The Five Satins | from Album = | A-side = | B-side = | Released = | Format = | Recorded = | Genre = | Length = | Label = | Writer = Fred Parris | Producer = | Certification = | Chart position = | Last single = | This single = | Next single = | Misc = }}
This article could definitely use an Infobox consistent with the original Five Satins single; not having a 7" copy, I'll have to defer to someone with the full set of data. I've copied over the Template form for convenience. - B.C.Schmerker 03:46, 14 May 2007 (UTC)
Year
[edit]I've move the article from 1954 to 1956 when the song was released by The Five Satins, first on Standard Records and then on Ember Records at the end of the year.[1][2] dissolvetalk 06:32, 2 September 2007 (UTC)

In the Still of the Night (The Five Satins song) → In the Still of the Nite – Original name of the song as released on Standord Records and Ember Records in 1956. The song was subsequently rereleased by Ember Records in 1961 as "In The Still of The Night", but most subsequent releases have reverted to the original spelling --Relisted. - This is a contested technical request (permalink). Steel1943 (talk) 21:14, 17 January 2015 (UTC)
- Oppose, given that Still of the Night, a similar disambiguation page, exists. (This nomination essentially declares In the Still of the Night (The Five Satins song) the primary topic for the "Nite" spelling when that spelling could easily be used/confused for other subjects on the disambiguation page.) Due to this, I say retarget In the Still of the Nite to Still of the Night (a disambiguation page) since it seems as though the subjects on the disambiguation page could be confused for one another when looked up by this alternatively-spelled title. Steel1943 (talk) 21:14, 17 January 2015 (UTC)
- In addition, the minor spelling difference would probably not be enough to distinguish the articles listed on the disambiguation page from one another. So, alternately, I also support move to In the Still of the Nite (The Five Satins song) in order to retain the disambiguator. Then, In the Still of the Nite should probably redirect to the disambiguation page I mentioned in my previous comment (Still of the Night). Steel1943 (talk) 21:20, 17 January 2015 (UTC)
- Oppose or In the Still of the Nite (The Five Satins song) if a move is really required. In ictu oculi (talk) 00:50, 18 January 2015 (UTC)
- Comment. I'd be quite happy with In the Still of the Nite (The Five Satins song). Skinsmoke (talk) 19:32, 22 January 2015 (UTC)
- Support as requested - "In the Still of the Nite" redirects here already, and has done since 2007. And there is a hatnote directing people to the disambig page if they need it. Given that this is the only entity for that title that uses the peculiar spelling, I think that's entirely reasonable and satisfies WP:NATURAL. — Amakuru (talk) 11:42, 25 January 2015 (UTC)
- Right, I added the hatnote due to the current state of the redirect In the Still of the Nite, not because I agree with its current state. Regardless how long the redirect has been targeting this page, the difference in spelling still doesn't seem enough to distinguish itself. (Thus, the reason keeping the disambiguator would seem more helpful to allow itself to still be distinguished from other similarly-spelled articles.) Steel1943 (talk) 15:35, 25 January 2015 (UTC)
- Hmm, I'm not sure there's a specific guideline or policy on this. Personally I think Nite and Night are sufficiently different that it's OK. Nite is a sort of humorous misspelling of night, not just an interchangeable alternative. And if you contrast Google hits for "in the still of the nite" "five satins" (22,400 hits) vs "in the still of the nite" "cole porter" (91 hits), it is clear that the version with this spelling almsot excluseively refers to the Five Satins song, and that people searching for Cole Porter are unlikely to search for it with this spelling. Thanks! — Amakuru (talk) 16:04, 25 January 2015 (UTC)

- Oppose- appears to be the original title.Qxukhgiels (talk) 22:06, 27 January 2015 (UTC)
- Oppose. If the title is rendered as either night or nite then it follows for practical reasons the title should be in standard English for simplicity. --Richhoncho (talk) 13:50, 21 February 2015 (UTC)
