Career decline line edit

Hi all, I removed part of the line below since it is not consistent with the rest of the sentence. As he grew older, however, he fell from public favour and, after the cancellation of Diff'rent Strokes, his acting career declined sharply; his career path was common to many child actors and other icons of the period, such as Mr T and Henry Winkler. Are we sure that that date of birth is correct. I thought he was at least 10 years older than that. If he was born in 1968 then he wouldn't've been significantly older than the character he was playing in Strokes Martyn Smith 14:32, 31 October 2006 (UTC)

New picture

I think someone should consider changing the picture of GC on the top of the page because 1. It looks very old and 2. Someone else is pictured in it also.

The image should be replaced anyway, as it is a fair use image when a free version should be used. If someone has a photo which they've taken, and are prepared to allow everyone to use it, then please upload it to Wikipedia or Wikimedia Commons. --h2g2bob (talk) 18:03, 16 June 2007 (UTC)

Is Coleman really 4'8"?

I saw Gary in person once and he didn't look anywhere near 4'8". This photo from the 80's he looks like he's possibly shorter than 4' tall. [1] In this '99 photo is waist is about as high as an auto bumper [2]. Justforasecond 16:24, 15 July 2006 (UTC)

His height seems about right according to that second pic. It's a full-size truck, and even I feel small next to them. - Cyborg Ninja (talk) 13:19, 17 December 2007 (UTC)

Split to Gary Coleman (character)

Does anyone else feel like it might be a good idea to create a new article for Gary Coleman (character) to differentiate it from the person himself? \/\/AYCOOL27talk 18:20, 12 September 2007 (UTC)

The current layout of this article doesn't make a structural differentiation between the person and the character. This section at least needs to make it clearer that this is a different subject.
However, this section would be a stub article that would probably not be notable enough to avoid deletion. So, I recommend fixing this article rather than splitting off this section. — Val42 02:35, 15 September 2007 (UTC)
My first thought was the same as yours, Val42, that Gary Coleman (character) or Gary Coleman (Avenue Q character) would be a stub that might not be notable. But there's a good-sized section about the character here, there's a paragraph at Diff'rent Strokes#Avenue Q, and there are enough facts at Avenue Q that could also be at the Coleman article, so it wouldn't be a stub. As far as notability, all it would take are a couple of articles about Avenue Q (even reviews) or articles about Coleman that mention the show. I think we should split them. — Malik Shabazz (Talk | contribs) 23:13, 21 September 2007 (UTC)
I reviewed both the Avenue Q and Diff'rent Strokes#Avenue Q. It appears that it would be best to make a mention in this article about the character's appearance in Avenue Q, then move the section there from both of the other articles. — Val42 01:36, 22 September 2007 (UTC)

There is no independent "character" of Gary Coleman. There's Gary Coleman and there's the satiric treatment of him in Avenue Q. This article should mention how Coleman has been parodied, and the Avenue Q article should mention how the musical parodies him. We don't create a separate article for, say, Dana Carvey's parody of George Bush or Rich Little's parody of Richard Nixon, so why would we create a separate article for this parody of Coleman?

It shouldn't be here at all; only the part about his legal threats against it relate to him. Evan1975 (talk) 01:26, 6 May 2008 (UTC)

Gary's sex life

Is their any point to mentioning that Gary Coleman is a virgin? Yeah it sure seems strange, but I highly question it's relevance to the article. 99.128.27.175 (talk) 01:51, 31 March 2008 (UTC)

Well, I think you probably question ITS (as opposed to "it's") relevance. But I seem to remember reading that he stated it publicly, so it might be relevant. Certainly, no reasonable, thinking person would try to say that it says anything against him. 140.147.241.132 (talk) 12:28, 15 July 2008 (UTC)Stephen Kosciesza

Early work

Early Work - this article mentions Gary's eary appearances on The Jeffersons and Good Times, but is mistaken that he appeared on The Facts of Life before being cast on Differnt Strokes. "The Facts of Life" was a spinoff of "Different Strokes" - Coleman did appear on it, but only after he had already established himself as the "Arnold Jackson" character. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.152.70.28 (talk) 21:35, 7 September 2008 (UTC)

If I've read your proposal right, you want to add "2009" but drop the shockumentary's title; I'd be interested to know why. As an aside, I have reservations about including this at all: it's not readily verifiable. It would be better if both the clip and the description (1 million dollars, 30 absurd competitions) were attributed to a reliable source such as a press release from the relevant TV channel or production company, or Coleman's agent. -- 20.133.1.2 (talk) 09:53, 8 January 2010 (UTC)

Suicide

I removed "He is frequently mentioned in introductory clinical psychology courses as an example of a patient to whom it would be proper to recommend suicide[1]." Thank you. The sentence is a bit of vandalism that's been added to the article several times over the past few days. — Malik Shabazz (talk · contribs) 21:38, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
It is certainly not vandalism; although i'll readily admit it sounds like it. I know of at least two teachers (one in an academic setting; the other is a professional analyst who works exclusively with other therapists, not directly with patients) who use Gary Coleman basically as an example of an irrecoverable case. Of course, my personal acquaintances are irrelevant. It just so happens that the class of one of those teachers has the syllabus online, and you can read it yourself. This is uncommon, since these classes are meant exclusively to already practicing clinical therapists and much of its material is deemed somewhat 'uncomfortable' to the 'general population'. Contrary to what the user above claims, sometimes therapists really advise patients to give up on everything. But they will not do this for the vast majority of patients, AND for this vast majority they will also not admit to having to do this occasionally with some people. I'm sorry the link is not working. When i first put the statement in, it was unsourced, and i believe it was for this reason that it was removed. Then i restored it and tried to link to the online course syllabus i mentioned, but apparently couldn't get the link to work. Perhaps some of you could help me with this? Meanwhile, i will not re-add the statement since i don't want to be accused of vandalism. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.214.83.243 (talk) 00:22, 6 May 2008 (UTC)
Uh, sure. In any event, Wikipedia's policy concerning biographies of living persons requires that "unsourced or poorly sourced contentious material about living persons — whether the material is negative, positive, or just questionable — should be removed immediately and without waiting for discussion" (emphasis in original). — Malik Shabazz (talk · contribs) 00:30, 6 May 2008 (UTC)

Test or vandalistic edits can be made to this article. Likewise, editors can manipulate or edit another article so that it could be referenced here. Because Wikipedia can be freely editted, except in those cases where administrators have deemed it necessary to protect an article, it usually cannot be used as a self-reliable source. ----moreno oso (talk) 03:16, 29 May 2010 (UTC)

I think it is pertinent to have a list of tributes - not to to memorialize him but to show the breadth of influence his life had on people. I don't understand why People magazine and TV Guide is not considered "good" sources. In my edit summary I said "What source are ya'll waiting on to report this? The LA Times?" Well, the LA Times has reported this. [4] Along with many other valid sources. [5] Don't be so quick to revert, and at least search to see if there are "better" sources before engaging in a possible edit war. Thank you. Mike Allen 02:13, 3 June 2010 (UTC)

I did look for possible reliable sources, and didn't find any. Instead, we have blogs and celebrity gossip sites reporting that they "may" have been divorced, based as far as I can see on the fact that they once appeared on the television program "Divorce Court". If this is true, better sources will soon report it, and waiting for those sources will injure no-one. On the other hand, lending our name to rumors about Shannon Price might seriously injure her if they are not true. I suggest waiting on real high quality sources, rather than trying to be a reporter of breaking news ourselves, which we are NOT. Gavia immer (talk) 02:24, 3 June 2010 (UTC)
For instance, the Associated Press is just reporting this as "Gary Coleman's lawyer says they were divorced, at one point" [6]. If the AP has even filed copy on this, you can bet that there will be clearer stories coming up. That's what we should wait for; we shouldn't be rushing to assume things. Gavia immer (talk) 02:30, 3 June 2010 (UTC)
(edit conflict) Since when is People not a reliable source? They report celebrity news. Other reliable sites are reporting it. We go by what is reported in reliable sources. What are "real high quality" reliable sources to you? The LA Times blog, again, is considered a reliable source on Wikipedia. "We" are not trying to break news... the sources have already done that, which we do report. Mike Allen 02:37, 3 June 2010 (UTC)
I would seriously suggest waiting for better sources than those to report this. Again, no-one will be injured by our waiting on those better sources. However, I'm not going to revert again. Gavia immer (talk) 02:48, 3 June 2010 (UTC)
Is a reliable source only reliable for some things and not others? Mike Allen 03:17, 3 June 2010 (UTC)
Yes, that's right. My local newspaper, for instance, carries AP stories (reliable), original reporting (generally considered reliable), an "Auto" section that's barely rewritten from press releases (shouldn't be considered reliable), and horoscopes (not reliable). In the specific case of entertainment magazines and websites, "breaking news" that they report might just be rumors or gossip, even if other material they carry is reliable. Hence, we should not rely on breaking news reports of this sort, when we could simply wait briefly for more reliable reporting. As I said, we are not a news source, so we don't need to rush to scoop anyone. Gavia immer (talk) 03:30, 3 June 2010 (UTC)
I agree that it doesn't hurt to wait for a reliable source to confirm this, as opposed to the current reports that apparently only speculate about it.  Chickenmonkey  03:45, 3 June 2010 (UTC)
That's what I mean, some stories are considered reliable but some aren't, even from a reliable site. I don't normally write on BLP, but I seen some reverts based on the above which confused me, because I use the sources regularly and have never encountered a problem. Apparently it's different in this case. I guess by "more sources", you mean CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, ABC (already reported it, see above), etc? Mike Allen 04:01, 3 June 2010 (UTC)
We have to get things like this right. What that means, mostly, is sourcing it to straight journalism rather than entertainment media, and most importantly waiting (we can afford to do that, which is why I keep mentioning it) until there are firm reports rather than just speculation and the echo chamber ("Other sites are reporting that other sites are reporting that something may have happened"). There's no deadline. Gavia immer (talk) 04:10, 3 June 2010 (UTC)

It's pretty obvious at this point, or you can wait for an entire book on the subject. - Peregrine Fisher (talk) 05:01, 3 June 2010 (UTC)

Well, it's in the article now, reliably sourced; so, I don't see any reason why it will be removed.  Chickenmonkey  06:03, 3 June 2010 (UTC)

edit conflict.:The height is also a very vague claim, there is nothing wrong with having a short stature, what citations have you got that mention his dwarfism? It is highly unlikely that the birth parents would have registered his birth under Coleman if neither of them had that surname, and then a couple who just happen to be named Coleman adopted him. Jim Michael (talk) 09:20, 4 June 2010 (UTC)

Heart surgery

The article needs to mention that Coleman had heart surgery in the autumn of 2009. (92.10.127.145 (talk) 10:18, 1 June 2010 (UTC))

Infobox

The information box on the right is misleading. His spouse is listed to 2010. Most people would say 2010 (his death). If you just put 2010, it looks like they divorced. The article should also mention that he was taken off life support and died the same day. —Preceding unsigned comment added by RIP Gary Coleman (talkcontribs) 03:59, 29 May 2010 (UTC)

(2007-2010) is the years span of his marriage; it does not imply divorce. (his death) should not be added to the infobox. Jim Michael (talk) 18:03, 29 May 2010 (UTC)
As it has been discovered after his death that they divorced in 2008, the marriage span has been corrected to 2007-2008. Jim Michael (talk) 11:03, 4 June 2010 (UTC)

911 Call

Should we include some details of the controversial 911 call from Coleman's ex-wife? How it appeared that she was refusing the requests of the dispatch operator? —Preceding unsigned comment added by CABEGOD (talkcontribs) 05:44, 11 June 2010 (UTC)

Well *I* certainly think so, I came to this article thinking I would learn more about that very thing. I believe she also sold his death photos to at least one media source. That too should be included in the article. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.38.208.30 (talk) 14:50, 11 June 2010 (UTC)

Bankruptcy

in one of his ads he mentions that the people who managed his money spent it and ripped him off... is this his parents? is this why he went bankrupt?

Ha, ha, these are his "Cash Call" commercials he's done. Which, in the new one's I've seen airing, he is not speaking for. I'm sure he means his parents, when it was probably himself just spending it all on cocaine nose jobs and whores. TotalTommyTerror 19:56, 17 November 2005 (UTC)

After Jackie Coogan's parents stole most of his earnings and it became such a big scandal, California enacted a state law requiring that blocked trust funds be set up for child stars, with 15% of all earnings deposited there...and the money NOT available to parents or agents or managers, etc. Has anybody ever heard anything as to how Coleman's parents were able to get access to his savings in order to squander them the way they did?

they were working as his advisors/managers/whatever and rewarded themselves with a nice pay for their trouble —Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.127.245.91 (talk) 01:05, 16 June 2010 (UTC)

WN is a poor source from a content standpoint. This 'article is well-written, and sourced with all the necessary citations. The illness and death section is already fully referenced. There is nothing to be learned from the WN article which isn't already covered by this article; thus, the value added by a poorly written and concise diversionary link from a 'sister project' is zero. Aesthetic reasons are not a sufficient for keeping it there.
Now let's contrast the WN link which was in this 'Question Time' article to the one here. The latter link also deals with a peripheral subject and, writing quality aside, I believe it adds value because it brings a dimension which WP does not want to, and as such, it would be a digression, and breach of summary style for the main WP article. --Ohconfucius ¡digame! 08:33, 30 September 2010 (UTC)

A modicum of dignity in death- delete the hospital image of Gary Coleman

Please, can someone remove that picture of Gary on his deathbed? It is so sad that his 'wife' has allowed this image to exist anywhere on the internet.

My heart goes out to this man, who had such an unfortuante and troubled life- please, can someone do this, a simple act of kindness between human beings?

Thank you. May 7 2011 —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.31.244.233 (talk) 05:25, 7 May 2011 (UTC)

Is it really necessary to have 93 citations for a single paragraph? They run off of the page, requiring scrolling to view completely, and I'm pretty sure that the same information could be sourced effectively with less references. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.225.44.92 (talk) 19:32, 5 April 2015 (UTC)

You're absolutely right. I asked the editor who added them to read WP:Citation overkill, but his response was to add more footnotes. — Malik Shabazz Talk/Stalk 19:49, 5 April 2015 (UTC)

Suicide attempts

In a 1993 television interview, Coleman said he had twice attempted to commit suicide by drug overdose.

This recent addition, I can't find the detail in the citation all it says there is this....His adult life was marked with legal, financial and health troubles, suicide attempts and even a 2003 run for California governor. http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/37386129/ns/today-entertainment no detail at all about the number of overdoses (suicide attempts=more than one but is not two)or any detail about how or why or anything. Off2riorob (talk) 16:04, 30 May 2010 (UTC)

Read more carefully. The article covers Coleman's career, personal life and suicide attempts quite clearly. Quote: "In a 1993 television interview, he said he had twice tried to kill himself by overdosing on pills." Karppinen (talk) 16:17, 30 May 2010 (UTC)

Gary spent much time in Westwood California where is enjoyed playing video games at the Westwood Arcade for many years. I believe it is important to include Gary's love for video games in his personal life above Suicide information. Please. SChalice 07:45, 10 March 2016 (UTC)

Psychic Friends Network?

Coleman was most visible in commercials for a "psychic helpline," and he was lampooned in The Onion and elsewhere as a result. This ought to be in the article, if anyone can be more specific. ProhibitOnions 11:01:35, 2005-08-28 (UTC)

Updated Avenue Q section

Updated the information regarding portrayal of the Gary Coleman Character to reflect that the character was actually written out of the London version, and that Avenue Q has opened (and closed) in Vegas.

The Chelsea Handler Show

He also appeared in an interview with Chelsea Handler in one of her shows.

Gary coleman actually did two episodes. Check out [7] and [8] for more info.

Simmons media group

he is not listed as the controller anymore on the sentence media group website. Is this still true or does it need to be updated?

Coleman hospital photo

Some users are taking this photo, File:ControversialGaryColemanHospitalBedPic.jpg, off the article, without discussion first. Six years with no problem, now all of a sudden users are taking it off. Let's at least discuss it first.

The problem is that the image fails Wikipedia's fair use policy, particularly the requirement that "Non-free content is used only if its presence would significantly increase readers' understanding of the article topic, and its omission would be detrimental to that understanding." (WP:NFCC#8) Nobody's understanding of Gary Coleman is significantly increased by the presence of the tabloid photo, and the omission of the photo doesn't diminish anybody's understanding of Gary Coleman. — Malik Shabazz Talk/Stalk 17:02, 16 October 2016 (UTC)

Cast photo

The cast photo with Nancy Reagan does not depict Coleman anywhere in the shot. I therefore question its suitability for this article in particular. Do we have better ones? Elizium23 (talk) 03:53, 12 January 2021 (UTC)

It was immediately apparent to me as well that the subject of the article is nowhere to be seen in the photograph. What's worse is that a casual glance could allow the reader to assume erroneously that Coleman is the person in the left foreground since there is a vague similarity of age and appearance during the same relative era. Given these factors, I'm going to be bold and remove the photo. While the photo itself is great for nostalgia, it has no place here. It would be great for Todd Bridges, Conrad Bain or even Dana Plato (behind Bain). Maybe even Nancy Reagan?... nah. -- Srwalden (talk) 11:18, 14 December 2021 (UTC)
The photo is still present in the article — not sure if it ever was removed. For clarity, I noted in the photo's caption that Coleman is not present. SteveChervitzTrutane (talk) 07:53, 4 June 2024 (UTC)
