Personal memories

[edit]

Personal memories (in the hopes this helps others find references that may be cited). I attended TESC 1979-1980, and continued in the area another year. Iirc, there were two games of Civilization played during that time, each about 3-4 months in duration.

Civilization was played on a grid of 1000x1000 quadrants, mostly water, except for 100 islands ranging in size from 2000 quadrants down to 1 quadrant. Players were initially seeded onto the largest islands until some population of players had been reached. The game was not turn-based, per se. Players collected action units of various kinds in real-time, and could then spend those time units in various ways. The game technology of artillery, industry, docks, planes, radar, and warships approximately the WW2 era.

Chas Douglass was a sysadmin for TESC's computer in that era, and has run instances of the game at various times since then. Circa 2003, he was involved in a reimplementation of the game into C++ and Linux. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.108.213.131 (talk) 02:46, 7 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Empire Renamings

[edit]

I'd like to propose that this page be renamed / moved, as Empire Classic isn't a perfect article name: the games are called Empire, and the group of games as a whole is generally referred to as Empire too, not Empire Classic; the article (rightly) doesn't cover a single computer game in any case, and using (computer game) is not encouraged when it can be omitted (Empire Classic on its own may even be better than at present) or (video game) can be used instead (as in this case when it can be).

The main problem we face when coming up with a good name for the article is the fact that Empire is used so commonly as a game title. As a result I think it's best to consider renaming this article in conjunction with the other Empire titled games (most notably the Classic Empire (computer game) article); one suggestion is to rename this article Empire (classic video game), but I've started a discussion along these lines at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Video games#"Empire"s - please go there and leave any comments, thoughts or suggestions in the discussion. Thanks! --xensyriaT 15:37, 29 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sources

[edit]

Does anyone have more reliable, secondary sources for this? E.g., reviews/analysis from mainstream publications? If not, the page would be better off merged into another. Another issue I'm having is determining whether the sources used in Classic Empire (the ones that reference "Empire" from this time period but not a specific version) are about that Empire or another, such as this. czar 12:51, 13 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

It's a fair comment, but this clearly passes WP:N, and so I support it's being kept as a separate article. As for improving the sources, a Google Books search for "Peter Langston" empire is probably a good starting point. ‑‑YodinT 12:40, 14 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
P.S. I also take your point about the different games of the same name: feel free to give me a shout if there are specific RS that you want a hand identifying (generally this can only be done by the context, e.g. the gameplay they are said to have influenced, or the sources they've used), or to see if we can get better and less ambiguous sources to replace them. ‑‑YodinT 12:44, 14 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
This wolfpack history page has a timeline with some sources, can use something from there perhaps? Talas7 (talk) 22:18, 14 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
They seem to be all primary sources? We'd be looking for coverage in reliable, secondary sources. czar 16:03, 15 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
