A photo of the following Original Patent is included in the references for the following. A medical student from Toronto Ontario named Henry Woodward and his associate, hotel keeper Mathew Evans, patented the first electric light bulb on July 24, 1874, five years before Edison's US patent, and four years before Joseph Swan presented his light bulb at the Newcastle upon Tyne Chemical Society on 18 December 1878. Because the Canadians didn't have the money to develop their invention, they sold a share of it to Thomas Edison, whose company experimented with different filament materials until they discovered the tungsten filament.
