Better intro, more impact, separate impact by region, any chance of impact pictures? Jdorje 20:27, 14 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Got the pic taken care of. Cyclone1 16:24, 23 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

He meant pictures of damage but that works. A damage pic certainly couldn't hurt. -- §HurricaneERIC§Damagesarchive 00:49, 26 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Fatalities?

[edit]

So... what should I put for the fatalities? There isn't really a good death toll. Going country by country isn't even ideal. In Madagascar, the storm killed at least 64 people. Collectively, Gloria and Eline killed 205 people, but Gloria's death toll on its own is 66, so Eline could've killed 139 at most. One of the few international disaster databases, EM-DAT, sadly just lists 130 deaths for Madagascar from February to March, which would include both Eline and Gloria. For Mozambique, it's fuzzier. Early news stories only directly attribute 17 deaths to Eline there, but the floods and the cyclone are so interconnected. It's known that there were 150 deaths before Eline arrived, and there were around 700 deaths from Eline (although EM-DAT lists 800 deaths), meaning at most Eline killed 550. Zimbabwe and South Africa have 12 and 21 deaths, respectively, which makes it easy.

Overall, that means Eline killed at least 114 people, and as many as 722. The current listing of "up to 1,000 direct" is pretty misleading, as the toll would have to include the floods. Should I list the death toll as "at least 114"? That is awfully low, but is the most accurate. Slightly less accurate would be the 64 from Madagascar, 33 from Zimbabwe and South Africa, and the 700 from Mozambique for floods, thus being 797 (with a note that it includes concurrent flooding), which seems too exact. As the article does cover the floods in great detail, it isn't the worst option, and is decently backed up by MFR (which mentions the 700). However, we know that Eline didn't kill those 700 people. So I'm not quite sure what to do. Thoughts would be very appreciated - @Juliancolton:, @Jason Rees:, @Yellow Evan:? ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 20:23, 3 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I'd set it as a range from 114-722 in there. YE Pacific Hurricane 21:07, 3 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, will do. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 20:44, 6 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Hurricanehink! I am going to be reviewing this article. Below are the issues have I with passing this article and listing it as a GA:

  • I think the lead is a bit long. Of course, this is a high-impact storm, but you devoted about 21 and a half lines to the impact, but only use six for the MH. Obviously, this storm was important meteorological as well, since it traveled over 6,8000 miles and lasted 29 days. Maybe you should try to cut the impact and add more MH?
  • "It formed on February 1, 2000 in the Australian" - Comma after "2000"
  • "south of Beira, Mozambique near peak intensity" - Comma after "Mozambique"
  • "estimated at $9 million (USD), and collectively"; "and damage estimated at $500 million (2000 USD)." - Why does the former simply say "(USD)", but the latter says "(2000 USD)"
  • Why didn't you wikilink Zimbabwe, South Africa, and Botswana in the last paragraph of the lede?
  • "76 kilometres per hour (47 mph) to St. Brandon. On Mauritius, the cyclone produced wind gusts of 137 kilometres per hour (85 mph)" - Abbreviate km/h
  • Maybe more issues later.

So far, I think it's a nice article that doesn't need to much fixing.--12george1 (talk) 06:38, 19 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thoughts

[edit]

I have been asked to provide some thoughts on this article:

After crossing 90° E, the Météo-France office in Réunion (MFR) renamed the storm Eline on February 8. - This is factually incorrect as the Mauritius Met Service renamed it not MFR.Jason Rees (talk) 19:55, 18 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
The Perth Tropical Cyclone Warning Center (PTCWC) -> Australian Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) - I am trying to encourge the project to be less specific with which TCWC from the BoM monitored it since Brisbane can warn for Perth.Jason Rees (talk) 19:55, 18 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
PTCWC to BoM.Jason Rees (talk) 19:55, 18 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
PTCWC estimated an initial peak of 140 km/h (87 mph) -> Why isnt it rounded to 140 km/h (85 mph)?
What is that on the Australian scale?
Also use the IBTRACS link here rather than the TCR to cite here as it will be easier to cite if ever changed.Jason Rees (talk) 19:55, 18 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Talking of IBTRACS make sure the URL uses the IBTRACS URL template {{IBTRACS url|id=2000032S11115}} and which points to Version 4 and can be tweaked every year rather than 3.Jason Rees (talk) 19:55, 18 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
For consistency Australian tropical cyclone scale -> Australian tropical cyclone intensity scale.Jason Rees (talk) 19:55, 18 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Météo-France (MFR)[nb 4] estimated 10‑minute winds of 65 km/h (40 mph) at that time. -> Personally I would just use a line about the BoM passing the primary warning responsibility for Leon to Meteo France.Jason Rees (talk) 19:55, 18 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I seriously wonder why we have a Meteorological history of Cyclone Leon–Eline article, as i feel that the MH within the main article is lacking ad a bit skimpy on details and i notice that you jump from the 8th to the 11th to the 14th.Jason Rees (talk) 19:55, 18 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
the storm passed about 85 km (53 mi) south of St. Brandon - Why 53 mi?.Jason Rees (talk) 19:55, 18 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Passing about 160 km (99 mi) northwest of - Why 99 mi?.Jason Rees (talk) 19:55, 18 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
While approaching eastern Madagascar on February 17, Eline intensified to reach 10‑minute winds of 165 km/h (103 mph), making landfall near Mahanoro at that strength.[1][7][1] - Why the double citation to Reunion?.Jason Rees (talk) 19:55, 18 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Who wrote the "Monthly Global Tropical Cyclone Summary February 2000"?.Jason Rees (talk) 19:55, 18 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
The JTWC estimated peak 1‑minute winds of 215 km/h (134 mph), - Again rounding.Jason Rees (talk) 19:55, 18 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
making it the strongest storm to hit the nation in several decades. -> Can we be more specific please.Jason Rees (talk) 19:55, 18 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Check both Met Mar articles for the season in case there is anything that can be cited back to there or you have missed anything 1 & 2.Jason Rees (talk) 19:55, 18 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I feel that the section on the duration needs a bit of love and possibly expanding to include the SHEM and World.Jason Rees (talk) 19:55, 18 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Preparations and impact -> Effects.Jason Rees (talk) 19:55, 18 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Before Eline struck Mozambique, storm warnings and later hurricane warnings were issued on February 21 -> It seems strange that the Mozambique weather service would issue storm/hurricane warnings in the same way as the NWS would. In fact when I looked at the source, I presumed that it was talking about the normal Reunion marine bulletins rather than specifically Mozambique.Jason Rees (talk) 19:55, 18 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
This line from the BoM is interesting: Leon had little impact on either Christmas or Cocos Islands.Jason Rees (talk) 19:55, 18 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Swap the MFR TCR url to this one and put RSMC La Reunion as the author.Jason Rees (talk) 19:55, 18 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
The Tropical Cyclone Warning Center in Perth, Australia is a branch of the country's Bureau of Meteorology, which is the official Regional Specialized Meteorological Center for the Australian basin.[4] -> The BoM is not an RSMC for the purposes of TC tracking.Jason Rees (talk) 19:55, 18 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
that issues ->That issued.Jason Rees (talk) 19:55, 18 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Anymore impacts for the Mascarence islands? Jason Rees (talk) 19:55, 18 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
The MFR issued a gale warning for Zimbabwe in anticipation of strong winds well inland. However, the Zimbabwe government did not issue any storm warnings until the storm moved over the country. -> It strikes me as odd that MFR would issue a gale warning for Zimbabwe.Jason Rees (talk) 19:55, 18 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Gary mentions "There were some media reports which indicated that much of the populace along the eastern coast of Madagascar had little advance warning of the cyclone's approach." -> Can you look into this further as there are no preps listed for Madgascar? Jason Rees (talk) 19:55, 18 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Jason Rees (talk · contribs) brought up merging the MH article, and I have to say, I agree. There are only seven paragraphs in the sub-article vs. three in this one. I'm thinking of taking this article to FAC, and considering the size isn't overly long, I think it is appropriate to merge the MH article. Any thoughts? ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 23:18, 22 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
