Merge White Engine into FFXIII

[edit]

this article should be merged with the Final Fantasy XIII page, since its mostly backdrop information developers would mainly know about the game, and not likely something that will fall into widespread knowledge about the games of final fantasy xiii. unless maybe it became a revolutionary type of rendering system or something, that gains widespread industry adoption or something...maybe then would it deserve its own encyclopedia article.

or maybe it should be merged into the Fabulla Nova Crystalis article since all the console games for Final Fantasy XIII are probably going to use this engine.

I oppose, you can do that if this engine won`t stir up any more fuss within the next few years, which i highly doubt. BTW, i just stumbled upon this article, because final fantasy was a feature on wikipedia today. But cmon be logical. With such a userbase there will be much more separate info about this engine, and certainly not used for one installment. Emphasis lies in the word engine and seperate.Slicky 13:16, 19 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I agree, this article should definitely be moved into the Final Fantasy XIII page. I am a fan of Final Fantasy games and I am telling you now that the White Engine will not stir up anything, anywhere.

I ran accross the trailer, the "white engine" is old news, really doesn`t look impressive or novel in any way, rather like an overhauled PS2 engine with the rest doing the graphics processor. So rationally i would recommend to to merge it. The impressive specs are missing because there is nothing special or impressive about it so far. That means the article here isn`t warranted IMHOSlicky 16:25, 21 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I agree, the merger would not harm anything. I "White Engine" if anything would be labeled by Final Fantasy XIII by being "the first game to run on the engine" or what not. It could only help, not hurt. Even if the engine turns out to be number 1, Final Fantasy will still have a namesake in the engines history. --J. 02:50, 19 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose: The White Engine is intended to be used in many or all of Square's PS3 offerings. We don't keep the Unreal Engine in the Unreal article. Dread Lord CyberSkull ✎☠ 11:41, 24 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Agree, Merge into Final Fantasy XIII. The Unreal Engine has its own article because it has been licensed to so many developers, so its general knowledge now. Unless White Engine does become sub licensed to other developers houses to use, and gained widespread adoption, i guess then it would deserve its own article. but even now, there is little known about it, and its not like everything on White Engine has been verified. Miffy900 09:06, 26 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

also, from what i've read, it seems like 'White Engine' is more of a development environment than an actual game engine. the cgi part of it was called 'White Draw' if i remember correctly. Miffy900 08:30, 27 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose: This will be used in games other than final fantasy 13, merging will just require us to seperate it when another game using it comes out. Zazaban 22:35, 28 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

While it's certainly possible that it will ultimately be used for other titles, at the moment it's essentially unique to Final Fantasy XIII. Rather than trying to predict the future, it makes more sense to merge it now, and to reseperate it when and if it becomes sensible to do so. – Sean Daugherty (talk) 01:52, 29 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Merge: Sean Daugherty said it pretty well. Split it again when needed, if needed. Fx21 09:21, 29 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Merge - No other games have been announced for the engine's use as of right now, and if they and it becomes of importance, the article can always be split back. ~ Hibana 14:35, 31 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Comment I don't have an opinion either way, I'm just trying to add infoboxes to all game engines. I know this may be useless if a decision is made, but as long as a decision hasn't been made, I'm going to go ahead and add the infobox. If this article isn't merged, any help with adding onto the infobox would be appreciated (I just use the info already in the article). If it is merged, just scrap the infobox.--Clyde Miller 20:38, 3 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose: I can't believe this is even an issue, how will the public know about the engine without this? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Section (talkcontribs) 6 September 2006.

They'll read about it in the Final Fantasy XIII article. - Fx21 21:39, 6 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Merge it

I didn't know about it until I found out from an external source, it should be added AND left as a section on its own. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 150.204.84.142 (talkcontribs) 7 September 2006.

The article is now merged. - Fx21 14:28, 9 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The article should be split. Hiromichi Tanaka confirmed that White Engine will be used in Square-Enix's unnamed MMORPG. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.69.234.77 (talk) 07:41, 7 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose: Same reason as above, the Engine isn't just being used for FFXIII. Totally wrong to be redirected! Quote: “Development is proceeding smoothly now, with the framework now beginning to take shape. Last year we went through a development reorganization, with the development of our own cross-platform middleware – the white engine. This is the foundation for FFXIII and the new MMO. It’s safe to say that it won’t be much longer before I’m able to unveil even more secrets about what the future holds for Square Enix.” Three references: AGDC: How Square Enix Hunts The Hunters , Square Enix's White Engine is cross platform and Austin GDC: Live at the Hiromichi Tanaka keynoteGLdK 08:44, 26 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose: You all should wait until more information becomes available. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.194.173.192 (talk) 13:40, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose: This is one of Square-Enix's first universal game engines. In the past, they made a new engine for each game, but decided to use this program to put a stop to that and to make a common format. It will not be used exclusively in FFXIII, and therefore should not be merged with it. Here's a source stating it will be used in more than one game, and that it is their common game engine: Square Enix unveils Crystal Tools engine —Preceding unsigned comment added by Poetnk (talkcontribs) 21:43, 7 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

OPPOSE: This is a completely different entity. Yes it's the system used for the new games but there is so much more that could be put into an article about this game engine. Such as type of coding used, comparisons to other systems and a history on it. Why is called what it's called. What happen to the name White Engine? All of this and more. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Kilgannon2113 (talkcontribs) 20:46, 17 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

OPPOSE: With my small experience in this wiki, I say it shouldn't be merged into FF13 article because it is a game engine, much like Unreal or Euphoria... but... We could merge it to the Final Fantasy (Series) Graphics and Design development section... i think it would be a better idea.. Devilbreaker (talk) 04:39, 11 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

OPPOSE: This game engine is being used for multiple games, including the in development Final Fantasy XIV. Merging this article would confuse visitors to the article as the engine was not solely developed strictly for Final Fantasy XIII. Engine articles should remain seperate from games at all times, it is not in a businesses best interests, financially at the very least, to create an engine specially for the use of one game and the instance of an engine being used for one game is when a development studio has gone under and the engine is shelved/obsoleted/destroyed. Under this, and only this instance should an engine be merged with it's only title with the engines original name redirecting to it. Cardare (talk) 18:40, 12 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Xbox 360

[edit]

I added the Xbox 360 to the list of supported platforms. This was confirmed at GDC Austin by Hiromichi Tanaka. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.191.155.113 (talk) 05:30, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It also support Microsoft Windows. --[[User talk:Woad85|Woad85]] (talk) 06:27, 24 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Another game

[edit]

The Deus Ex: Human Revolution page says that it uses a modified version of this engine. I can't be bothered to verify it so can someone check this and add it? Thanks. --95.144.115.239 (talk) 18:26, 14 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

That's a totally different engine. Deus Ex: Human Revolution used an engine created for Tomb Raider Underworld called the "Crystal Engine". You can find out more info here. Basically, it's a totally different engine to "Crystal Tools". --G-Zay (talk) 20:47, 15 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Nice to see a game engine get some GA love. Comments to follow. Indrian (talk) 02:21, 14 April 2016 (UTC) Sorry to take so long to review this; I have been on vacation. The article is well-writte, engaging, and informative. I made some copy edits, and we are nearly there. Two things:[reply]

  • The GA criteria expresses a desire for images when possible. Could we get some screenshots or pictures of developers or something to round out the article?
  • The article kind of just ends without any kind of summing up. Could we perhaps have a paragraph discussing the final fate of the engine (basically that it was superseded by Luminous, etc. in the new console generation)?

I'll go ahead and put this  On hold while these small points are addressed. Indrian (talk) 16:13, 25 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, I got some more references of people commenting on the engine and saying that it lead to delays for FFXIII and has probably been dropped, which is as much as we can do for now, Square Enix has said nothing official for years and never formally said Crystal Tools is dead. I also added a picture from 2009 of the engine so people can see what the engine looked like during production. Judgesurreal777 (talk) 21:22, 25 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Looks good. Let's go ahead and promote. Nice job! Indrian (talk) 17:48, 26 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the great review @Indrian:! Another GA on the way to majority GA or above for Wikiproject Square Enix! Judgesurreal777 (talk) 19:24, 26 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
