WORKING AT CORTONWOOD+WATH MAIN COLLERIES
[edit]MY NAME IS DAVID I WORKED AT CORTONWOOD,FROM JAN 1959-SEPT 1960.MY FIRST JOB WAS A COUPLER ,COUPLING TUBS TOGETHER IN THE SILKSTONE SEAM.MY JOB WAS TO COUPLE EMPTY TUBS TOGETHER IN STRINGS OF FOUR IN THE THE RETURN SHAFT "PIT BOTTOM".THEN SENT THROUGH INTO THE MAIN INTAKE ROAD WAY,WHERE THEY WERE COUPLED INTO GROUPS OF TWEENTY THEY WERE THEN SENT TO THE FACE TO BE FULLED WITH COAL.EVERY ONE WHO STARTED WORKING IN THE PIT STARTED THIS JOB FIRST AND WORKED THEM SELF UP TO A PROMOTION.AFTER I WORKED DOING THIS FOR SEVERAL MOUNTHS I WENT TO ANOTHER PART OF THE MINE THE SOUTH SIDE WHERE I WAS EMPLOYED AS A TIMBER LAD .THE JOB INTIALED THE MOVING OF MATERIALS UP THE GATE TO THE FACE FOR THE COLLIERS IE,STEEL LEGS.SIX FOOT STRAPS AND OTHER ROOF STAIGTHENERS.WHEN I LEFT THE JOB I WORKED IN WATH MAIN COLLERY AS A FITTERS ASSISTANT FOR AQ YEAR OR SO ,THEN I WAS FACE TRAINED.AT THIS TIME IT WAS WITH A PICK AND SHOVEL (HARD TOIL)FILLING OFF EIGHT YARDS OF COAL,WHICH WAS BACK BREAKING AS YOU CAN IMAGINE . —Preceding unsigned comment added by 91.105.134.32 (talk) 15:32, 22 March 2009 (UTC)
