Why was it built?

[edit]

This info is missing: to export electricity from Tasmania or to export electricity from Victoria? 202.92.43.51 (talk) 07:53, 10 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Incorrect coordinates for facilities on Tasmania

[edit]

According to http://www.basslink.com.au/home/index.php?id=39 the coordinates of the static inverter in Tasmania may be incorrect. However correcting them is impossible with Online-Maps as these are too old. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 91.46.250.82 (talk) 17:29, 30 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The co-ords in the article are 41°6′53″S 146°53′31″E, and Google maps confirms them: 41°06'51"S 146°53'31"E. (They may have been corrected in the last 10½ years.)

Longest submarine power cables

[edit]

NorNed is 580, Sapei is 435, BassLink is 290. No longer second, slipped to third...:( --Graham Proud (talk) 13:41, 31 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

According to the Basslink site, the cable length is 370 km, consisting of
  • underwater section - 290 km
  • McGaurans Beach (Vic.) to transition station - 6.6 km
  • Four Mile Bluff (Tas.) to transition station - 1.7 km
  • total - 298.3 km

However, there are aerial transmission lines at each end:

  • transition station to Loy Yang (Vic.) - 57 km
  • transition station to George Town substation - 11 km
which gives a total length of 366 km - still less than Sapei, though. Your comment hasn't been acted on for 6½ years!

Metric and Imperial units of power

[edit]

Notwithstanding the physical equivalance of 1 horsepower and 746 watts, the imperial system of measurement customarily describes electricity generation, transmission, and distribution in watts (kilo-, mega-, etc. as approprate). Horsepower is used in describing motors, engines, and boilers. Basslink's capacity specified in horsepower looks strange.
