For an article about a potential foreign head of state, the amount of grammar mistakes, and inconsistency is large. Was the station closed on the 13th or the 17th? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.201.165.196 (talk) 23:22, 16 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Also, nothing about the Clash with the president is cited. Well it is, but the article cited does not have any dates, nor mention of Reporters without Boarders. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.201.165.196 (talk) 23:24, 16 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The article needs update. Many- not to say all the information- is included in 2009 Malagasy protests. --Lemur12 (talk) 03:35, 17 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Bias?

[edit]

The article written is totally biased and one sided. Andry Rajoelina is being painted black. Ravalomanana made the mistake of stepping on his toes.. by closing his TV and radio stations. Andry himself did not expect the public support which he used to his benefit. Opputunity knocks onces.. which he did not miss out on. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 196.20.160.163 (talk) 06:05, 23 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I completely disagree. Just because the article states that the African bloc and other countries have denounced the move, it doesn't mean that the article is condoning this particular stance. Sillyfolkboy (talk) 16:59, 23 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Birth date

[edit]

Which is the correct birthdate? The article says May 30, but the sidebar states March 30. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Dehagido (talkcontribs) 22:55, 23 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for mentioning this. It's been corrected to May by Spiderone, based on a Reuters source. -kotra (talk) 16:39, 24 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Name?

[edit]

Can someone put IPA or even non-IPA on how to pronounce his name. I have heard media pronounce it as An-drezzle-oh, but that sounds very incorrect. 74.232.43.248 (talk) 02:48, 30 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It's close to (i)Ahndj(y) Rah-dzo'EL. Let me see if I can figure out how to put the IPA in. Malagasy is tricky because pronunciation varies widely (even for the same speaker). There are kind of "optional" sounds for most words. Lemurbaby (talk) 00:05, 17 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Is that (i) a prefix? We currently have the /a/ pronounced [ja], which seems odd. — kwami (talk) 05:09, 28 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The way I originally wrote it, I had the ʲ at the beginning because that's how it's pronounced most of the time in normal speech, but when someone is articulating slowly and clearly then they will drop that sound at the beginning and just start with /a/. I also had the final vowel sounds in superscript which still seems right to me because they're largely elided. What do you think? - how should his name be written? - Lemurbaby (talk) 08:29, 28 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Photo to change

[edit]

The photo in the infobox does not comply with Wikipedia's standards of neutrality (NPOV). Obviously, the page has been the target of Rajoelina's detractors, and the photo perfectly illustrates this situation. I understand that this photo is convenient because it's in the public domain since its owner is the:

"work of a United States Department of State employee, taken or made during the course of an employee's official duties. As a work of the U.S. federal government, the image is in the public domain per 17 U.S.C. § 101 and § 105 and the Department Copyright Information" [1].

Since this photo is of very low quality, the person is not facing the camera, and his face expressions are NOT his day-to-day facial expressions, I found a far better picture of him, exactly where the first one is located, with the same public domain rights. The photo was found on this document[1], which is a press release of some sort from the Madagascar US Ambassy. This official and public press release, which content was created by the US Embassy of Madagascar, contains another photo of Rajoelina, which is much better than the existing one. Comparison:
before  after
As you can tell on this before/after demonstration, I think we can all agree that the second picture is by far the most neutral picture of him. I agree that this is not the best pic ever, but it's much better than the first one, and they hold the exact same public domain rights. Replacement.

Importemps Talk 14:02, 20 october 2011

This photo is pretty dark and the bright television screen behind him (as well as the sliver of a person to his right) is distracting. Is there any reason why we can't use Picasa etc to improve the quality of the photo and repost? - Lemurbaby (talk) 14:16, 20 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Sure thing! I am not an expert with photo editing, but if you have the know-hows... Importemps Talk 14:36, 20 october 2011

Deep changes

[edit]

Hi,

Since 2009, a lot of things have changed, and I think it is about time to update this page with fresher info, and maybe less anti-Rajoelina spirit. I am going through a series of changes on this page, and would appreciate your feedbacks about the new elements I bring on the table. Here they are:

  • 1st ref: http://www.reuters.com/article/latestCrisis/idUSLL312842 |publisher=Reuters.com -> dead link
  • is a Malagasy media/advertising mogul -> is not how he is identified today by the international community
  • declared himself transitional head of state of Madagascar -> not true, the military forces chose him (since it is the military forces that took over the government)
  • the 2009 military coup that was condemned by most of the international community.[1][2] -> Belongs to the Clash with the President Ravalomanana paragraph (where it is already mentionned)
  • When popular protests in early 2009 forced elected president Marc Ravalomanana to resign, Rajoelina dissolved Madagascar's parliament, changed the high court judges and swore himself in as President of the High Transitional Authority on March 21, 2009.[3] -> Belongs to the Clash with the President Ravalomanana paragraph (where it is already mentionned)
  • Rajoelina was Mayor of Antananarivo, the capital of Madagascar, from December 2007 to February 2009.[4] Throughout his tenure as mayor, Rajoelina voiced strong opposition to the policies and practices of President Ravalomanana, culminating in the launching of popular protests that, together with military intervention, resulted in the end of Ravalomanana's presidency and Rajoelina's own assumption of power as President of the High Transitional Authority (HAT). -> belongs to Political career
  • His position was challenged in an unsuccessful military coup attempt on 17–18 November 2010[5]. -> Moved to assumption of presidency
  • Rajoelina's personal fortune derives from the wealth of his wife's family.[6] -> Andry Rajoelina organized night events, he's never been a DJ, this is only part of the smear campaign launched against him. This part should be ousted of this article: The author of the source article, Christina Corbett, seems to be a fervent opponent to Rajoelina, as you you tell by checking her list of published articles: http://journalisted.com/christina-corbett. Let me remind that a journalistic source still needs to have a neutral standpoint to be valid in Wikipedia, which is clearly not the case here. and a high school drop-out, by age 20 Rajoelina was working as a disc jockey in various clubs and bars around Antananarivo.[6] -> is based on Christina Corbett article
  • Clash with the President Ravalomanana -> paragraph name too biased, switching to 2009 Malagasy political crisis which is the central theme of this paragraph
  • Source: http://www.iol.co.za/index.php?art_id=nw20090128183451778C872853 DJ-turned mayor a thorn for government -> Same this article is biased, here are some excerpts to prove it: DJ-turned-mayor a thorn for government, fierce regime critic, the baby-faced entrepreneur, Rajeolina has branded the government a dictatorship (untrue), He has so far balked at Ravalomanana's calls for talks (untrue) + the article was posted on IOL News, an Aafrican independent news site that describes itself as Our stable of sites also provides specialist entertainment, motoring, business and personal finance options, along with a host of lifestyle offerings -> no edge on politics, foreign affairs, or subjects related to the Madagascar political crisis.
  • Insecurity and lawlessness erupted in the capital. Following Rajoelina's first major rally, a number of his supporters set fire to the broadcasting station of a television channel owned by the state.[7] Major commercial centers were looted and burned, and dozens of looters lost their lives when a burning building collapsed on them.[8] -> This part is not directly about Rajoelina, thus belongs to the page 2009 Malagasy political crisis
  • A pivotal moment arrived on 7 February when anti-government demonstrators attempting to storm the presidential palace were repelled by palace security forces who opened fire on the crowd using live ammunition. Dozens of protesters were injured or killed.[9] Both rivals at the center of the political storm continued to blame each other for the violence that had by mid-February left some 130 people dead.[10] -> Same, This part is not directly about Rajoelina, thus belongs to the page 2009 Malagasy political crisis
  • Assumption of presidency -> paragraph name, biased, switching to High Transitional Authority, the central theme of this paragraph
  • upon his supposed resignation -> is not supposed, did resign
  • self-declared -> not self-declared, was not all alone in this shift of power
  • Rajoelina held his inauguration on 21 March amid growing international opposition with foreign diplomats visibly absent at the ceremony.[11] Madagascar is heavily dependent on foreign aid and large donors, including the US and Norway, have withdrawn assistance in protest of the manner in which Rajoelina attained power. France, Madagascar's former colonial power, dismissed Rajoelina's presidency as "a coup d'état".[11] -> nothing says in the source that foreign diplomats were absent at the ceremony
  • Source: http://www.int.iol.co.za/index.php?set_id=1&click_id=68&art_id=nw20090806114445868C933057 -> dead link

Pfff, that's a lot of biased, distorted, or simply false content thrown out the window. I think we can safely say that this page was once assaulted by Rajoelina's detractors, but as the smoke clears, the POV values of Wikipedia re-rises from the dead !

Comments

[edit]

All in all this is a well written and engaging article, so well done on that!

Here are a few comments:

  • Lead:
    1. Before entering the political arena, Rajoelina launched several successful enterprises, most notably including a printing and advertising company called Injet in 1999 and the Viva radio and television networks in 2007
Two things, (i) "most notably" and "including" don't sound quite right together - they both imply a subset of the total so I think you only need one of them there; (ii) "most notably" could be a weasel term; by what criteria have you deemed the examples given to be notable?
  • Media entrepreneur:
    1. The first few sentences of the third paragraph of "Media entrepreneur" (those concerned with his marriage and family) don't really have anything to do with his career as a media entrepreneur, which struck me as slightly odd. Not sure if it merits a section on its own? (some other biographies do this, even when the section is quite short). However, looking again I see the paragraph then goes on to say how his wife's family supported his businesses. This structure did strike me as slightly odd though so maybe something to think about.
  • I tried moving the discussion about his wife into the "early life" section since they met when she was still in high school. Let me know what you think. If it doesn't work, I'll split it off into its own short section at the end of "early life". Lemurbaby (talk) 10:08, 2 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that seems alright to me. Sure, the 2007 birth is hardly early years but it doesn't seem as out of place now! No doubt others can comment on this if they notice it as and when it comes up to FAC...  — Amakuru (talk) 16:17, 3 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
    1. TIM: per WP:ABBR I think this should be spelled out in full when it is first used. It might also be good to state that this was the ruling party at the time (if indeed it was).
  • Mayor of Antananarivo:
    1. The TGV party: did he found this, or was it already in place when he joined and became leader?
    1. The date of the election is stated at the end of the first paragraph, but I felt like I'd have liked to know this information, or at least the year in which he sought the mayorship, earlier than that.
    1. Brownout: perhaps I'm just ignorant, but I wasn't sure what this meant when I read it. Might be good to either explain it or at least provide a wikilink somewhere (brownout (electricity)?)
    1. This move catalyzed a public already dissatisfied...
What does 'catalyze' mean in this instance? I can sort of imagine, but just wondering if it's a bit imprecise. I can't see a specific meaning at wiktionary:catalyze related to the mobilisation of the masses!
    1. In the first paragraph of the "Confrontation with Ravalomanana" subsection we are introduced to the promised "Democracy Place", however it is then brought up again (with French translation) in the second paragraph in a style suggesting we've never heard of it before. Might it be better to put the French translation against the first mention and then somehow be clear that the second is just a manifestation of the promise of the first. Or something.
    1. ...agricultural firm Daewoo...
Are Daewoo really an agriculture firm? The article Daewoo doesn't even contain the word "agriculture" anywhere.
  • It's actually Daewoo Logistics, a subsidiary of the Daewoo that the article above describes, which specializes in agriculture. I've rephrased a bit and clarified it's the Logistics group to be more accurate. Lemurbaby (talk) 14:28, 2 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
    1. military leaders transferred to him the executive power that had been given to the military by Ravalomanana
I don't really understand this part. Why did Ravalomanana hand over executive power to the military? And why were they then able to pass that power on to Rajoelina? Was there a coup, or was it something else?
  • I've added detail here that hopefully helps to clarify this. Whether it was a coup is debated, though the international community generally views it that way. Opinion within Madagascar is more divided. Lemurbaby (talk) 14:28, 2 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • President of the High Transitional Authority
    1. One of Rajoelina's first measures as president was to cancel Ravalomanana's controversial deal with Daewoo Logistics
Why is this a paragraph with only one sentence?
    1. Although Andry Rajoelina was sworn in as President of the High Transitional Authority of Madagascar at Mahamasina stadium in Antananarivo on 21 March 2009, the international community maintained that Rajoelina’s legitimacy was conditional to free and fair elections
These two aspects of his presidency (the swearing in ceremony and his international legitimacy) struck me as slightly unrelated to each other. Leaders without international recognition are often sworn in under domestic ceremonies and the ceremony itself is unlikely to confer or deny him any extra recognition.
    1. ...continue to withhold recognition of Rajoelina's legitimacy then in the next sentence The United States [...] also refused to acknowledge the Rajoelina administration
There is a difference in tense here and I'm wondering if that is significant. Has the U.S. since acknowledged the administration? The article doesn't say, if so.
    1. This BBC article here: [2] states that "In November 2011, a unity government was formed with the reluctant cooperation of Madagascar's two main opposition groups". There is no mention of that in the article as far as I could see.
  • Over the coming week I will expand the discussion of the endless back-and-forth related to the "roadmap" to end the political crisis. The creation of the "unity government" was part of that process. Lemurbaby (talk) 16:31, 2 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Images
    1. What is the licence and copyright status of File:Andry et Mialy Rajoelina, allée des Baobabs, 22 avril 2012.jpg ? It appears to come from Rajoelina's own website but it's not clear if it's in the public domain. (I couldn't follow the link to "mentions legales" due to it being branded a security risk where I'm located, so couldn't see what's contained there!)
  • Yes, there's a notice at the bottom of the webpage that explicitly states all images on the site are in the public domain and can be reproduced and redistributed. It is indeed a site that promotes the image and activities of Rajoelina's administration. Lemurbaby (talk) 16:31, 2 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I guess it wold be nice if we had a commons template similar to the one used for US federal government works to indicate this because it's not immediately obvious to a casual observer otherwise. I don't know how easy this would be though.  — Amakuru (talk) 08:45, 5 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • References
    1. I haven't checked any of these yet, will do so later today. I'm sure they're fine anyway!

Thanks and, again, great work.  — Amakuru (talk) 12:57, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Good article reassessment

[edit]

This article is now outdated and needs work. Since 2014, there have been very few updates, and those that do lack detail. The 2018 election and some developments during 2020 COVID do not encompass his now almost three years of Presidency. Older sections are also outdated and are inconsistent with information in 2009 Malagasy political crisis. I am no Madagascar expert so am not well placed to improve much of this myself. Another GAR nomination. This article was made a GA in 2013. However, this needs to be reassessed because it fails the broadness required for a GA. Andry is now president of Madagascar and has been for 4 years now. But, the article has rarely covered much of it in the presidency section. In order for this to remain a GA it must have Its presidency section updated and expanded. Onegreatjoke (talk) 18:21, 6 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
