Read the article with an objective eye and you'll know what I mean. I am excited for this game, but there's no reason to make claims about photo-realistic graphics and such. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 128.12.146.119 (talk) 22:12, 3 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The Spoiler Warning

[edit]

Is it really needed? I know under the Story heading it has a paragraph starting with "In the beginning of the game...", but that whole section basically serves as a back story as to why Alan has come to Bright Falls, and what has started to happen now that he is there. IMO there aren't any major plot details being "spoiled" here, those usually come further into the game. It's the sort of info people want to know, as opposed to spoilers such as major characters dying etc. ChrisJP 12:31, 20 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia doesn't do spoiler warnings... There shouldn't be one, even if it came right out and said "Alan killed Laura Palmer!!" in bold text. Steve 214.3.138.234 (talk) 18:38, 17 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Silent Hill 2

[edit]

Hmm. The story as described here really reminds me (to put it nicely) of Silent Hill 2... —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.43.182.51 (talk) 01:14, 3 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Story

[edit]

The plot synopsis used in this article differs from what can be found at official website. For example, Alice is not Alan´s fiancée (they´re married), she disappears AFTER arrival to Bright Falls, etc... Could anyone fix it? (I´m afraid I´m not able to do it myself). 79.127.160.90 (talk) 20:17, 20 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I will fix it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.160.157.119 (talk) 01:50, 22 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I fixed the plot so now it is the same synopis as the website. I am a unidentified user who likes to help update articles. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.160.157.119 (talk) 02:04, 22 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Announce Date

[edit]

The announce date seems to be important information to include. It was sometime during E3 2005. [1] Kinkywhynot (talk) 00:16, 3 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The game has been released - and it's time for a few revisions

[edit]

The Lynchian inspiration is very obvious; numerous tributes to not only Twin Peaks, but to Blue Velvet as well (note the soundtrack choices). I've only played through chapter one, but I'm already anticipating the drive down a Dark Road.

Incidentally, why is this article locked? It seems like such a trivial piece to lock; not like it's 'Islam' or 'Meat'.. just a video game. 24.131.135.40 (talk) 03:17, 11 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, it hasn't been released. Maybe your preorder arrived early? And it's locked because a bunch of people got into a dumb edit war about the native resolution. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 130.39.250.248 (talk) 12:50, 12 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Product Placement

[edit]

Why is there no mention of product placement in Alan Wake? Judging by some of the responses I've seen, it has a particularly egregious amount of product placement. Searching for "Alan Wake product placement" brings up numerous results, although I don't know if any of them are reliable sources. 66.156.90.250 (talk) 20:02, 26 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Is Penny Arcade a Reliable Source?

[edit]

Just driving by; I actually came from Penny Arcade, since I really didn't know anything about this game. I'm wondering whether or not Penny Arcade is actually a reliable source. Of course, I imagine that you could read the policy page and decide that PA fits the bill; I would perhaps ask at the Reliable Sources Noticeboard. I would also suggest that the plot section be heavily cut down. It's quite long, and written in a bulky, wordy fashion that isn't very helpful. I apologize for not just rewriting the summary myself, but since I've never even seen a screenshot from the game, much less played it, I doubt I could do a very good job. I would suggest looking at season summaries from plot-heavy TV shows, or FA-class game plot summaries in order to see a useful model.

My apologies for just stopping by and crapping on your work; I did find the article as written to be quite informative. I just thought I'd try and be helpful. 97.73.64.160 (talk) 14:50, 3 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Summary

[edit]

Who added all the extra details to the plot and grammar mistakes? It's too long and not needed. The way it was before was good enough. These edits should be undone.

Official forum post by Markus Maki as a source

[edit]

It can be used as source as Wikipedia guidelines do NOT specify that a forum post is not acceptable: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:RS

ctrl + f and typing "forum" brings up:

Anyone can create a website or pay to have a book published, then claim to be an expert in a certain field. For that reason self-published media—whether books, newsletters, personal websites, open wikis, blogs, personal pages on social networking sites, Internet forum postings, or tweets—are largely not acceptable.

Which doesn't apply in this case as no one can write on the Alan Wake forums and claim that he is a developer and use the Remedy logo. It's not a random facebook page, twitter or blog. It's the official forum of Remedy linked to their official webpage: http://www.remedygames.com/

There is an important exception to sourcing statements of fact or opinion: Never use self-published books, zines, websites, webforums, blogs and tweets as a source for material about a living person, unless written or published by the subject of the biographical material. "Self-published blogs" in this context refers to personal and group blogs; see WP:BLP#Reliable sources and WP:BLP#Using the subject as a self-published source.

Alan Wake is neither biographical material about a living person nor the posts made by Markus Maki are made by someone "random"; the forums are owned by Remedy and the developers ofter write there.

And that's all Wikipedia's rules have to say about forums. Concluding, they do not disallow the use of a forum post in general; only in specific cases detailed above.

I hope you do you realize that wikipedia's entry of Alan Wake currently uses numerous times the official forums as a source (that's even before my edits)?

For example the text:

"Alan Wake is a concept that we've been working with for over a year now. Once Max Payne 2 shipped we spent a little while recovering from the crunch, and then started working on different concepts trying to find the concept that would excite us and that we could be passionate about. And after several drafts we found something that we really liked... and that concept was Alan Wake."[15] - Petri Järvilehto, Game Developer

is sourced from the forums. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 178.128.243.161 (talk) 08:44, 19 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

edit In case you haven't realized reputable sources such as gamespot use Alan Wake's forums and Markus Maki's posts as a source of information..

http://www.gamespot.com/news/6213101.html

In a post to Alan Wake's official message boards this week, Remedy development director Markus Maki stated that the studio is completely focused on the Xbox 360 edition of the game, to the apparent detriment of the PC version. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.103.164.166 (talk) 08:56, 19 July 2010 (UTC) [reply]

edit For what is worth I replaced it with a news post written by a site that is owned by IGN. I hope that now it is ok. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.103.164.166 (talk) 09:15, 19 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Windows XP release date

[edit]

When will the game be released for Windows XP ? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 91.150.22.134 (talk) 14:08, 15 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Never as far as anyone knows. Rehevkor 14:09, 15 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Any good reason why not, as it was specifically intended for Windows? If it some sort of a scam that they think can fool people to buy Xbox360 they are only making people angry and boycotting Microsoft products. Microsoft is already very hated, why do they want to make it worse? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 91.150.29.198 (talk) 19:00, 15 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know? This is a place for discussing the article, best to find a forum for discussions such as this. Rehevkor 19:22, 15 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Cast expansion

[edit]

Came here looking to see who voice-acted Wake, but the information wasn't present. So I added a quick breakdown of some of the main and secondary characters with their voice actors. Hope it's up to scratch! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 101.172.170.170 (talk) 17:24, 4 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Generally for video games we do not include voice casts unless sources themselves have highlighted the specific roles (eg: such as with Batman Arkham City). --MASEM (t) 17:34, 4 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sequel information needs editing

[edit]

I read the information about the possible sequel, and then re-read a few more times, and it still didn't make sense to me. It feels like it's just been added on to every time more news was unveiled. Some bits make it sound like something is 100% confirmed, while later bits are then making it sound like it's all still in pre-development. Can we edit this to something more concise? I say we keep it to just the facts on what has been announced and released. Cbetta (talk) 00:39, 24 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    B. MoS compliance for lead, layout, words to watch, fiction, and lists:
  2. Is it factually accurate and verifiable?
    A. Has an appropriate reference section:
    B. Citation to reliable sources where necessary:
    C. No original research:
  3. Is it broad in its coverage?
    A. Major aspects:
    B. Focused:
  4. Is it neutral?
    Fair representation without bias:
  5. Is it stable?
    No edit wars, etc:
  6. Does it contain images to illustrate the topic?
    A. Images are tagged with their copyright status, and valid fair use rationales are provided for non-free content:
    B. Images are provided if possible and are relevant to the topic, and have suitable captions:
  7. Overall:
    Pass or Fail: Pass

References

  • This is trivial, but there is no need for inlines in the lead/infobox unless they follow a contentious statement (this lead has none).
  • Per checklinks, some of these references are currently dead links. GameSpot in particular just moved everything around; the content should still be there but the URL has changed.
  • The last paragraph in Gameplay cites no sources.

Coverage

  • The downloadable content section has no mention of the reception or performance of either release. Even a sentence or two would be nice.
  • The Cast section is pretty tiny. It could be cut, or the list of voice actors could be put into Story somewhere.

The article is quite good and the notes above are small problems. Great work! — Mr. V (tc) 07:41, 14 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Since the nominator only made four edits three months ago, and only two were trivial fixes to this article, I took the liberty of addressing all the issues you mentioned above. Let me know if everything looks good. —Torchiest talkedits 02:24, 18 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
@Torchiest: The Gamestation interview link is broken...I'm unable to find it on their website. But since it is used only twice in the article, and in sentences that are also cited by other sources, it can simply be cut. We're good to go! — Mr. V (tc) 00:05, 19 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Psychological horror

[edit]

There is no source for this category in the article. A user has been quick to remove it to say its in the article. I've read it through and did ctrl+f search and have not found out. Could the user copy + paste where a third party source calls it this in the article? Andrzejbanas (talk) 23:30, 15 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Well, the devs call it a "psychological thriller" which is not too far off from "psychological horror", which has a lot of concept overlap. But source wise, I found [1], there may be more. --MASEM (t) 23:37, 15 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
That, and also https://web.archive.org/web/20120204083716/http://www.remedygames.com/games/alanwake 47.18.199.86 (talk) 00:01, 16 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
You'll need third-party sources per WP:SUBJECTIVE, so Remedy could call it anything, but you'll require a third-person perspective. As for your sources from inverse, I am not familiar with this site. Is it a reliable source? Don't see anything about it from WP:VG/RS either. As for "psychological thriller" being not too far off, we have to stick to the source. Do not interpret things as close enough. Find something direct. Andrzejbanas (talk) 01:28, 16 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
We already have a third-party source as pointed out earlier. 47.18.199.86 (talk) 01:49, 16 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Which is it? If its Remedy, that's not one as that the game company and its not a third-party. If its the other one, can you explain how it's a reliable source? I can't find anything on the page that suggests what that site is, who runs it, or how it gathers it information, etc. Andrzejbanas (talk) 12:40, 16 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
This (very recent, very good) article does outline that statement, and generally, the article could be expanded upon this and other sources from the WP:VG custom search engine. Lordtobi () 12:49, 16 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Alan Wake Remastered Announcement

[edit]

Is there any reason why "The Sudden Stop" isn't at all mentioned, or even made the reference, as the original source for the Remastered announcement since that is where Sam Lake/Remedy chose to announce it? https://www.alanwake.info/2021/09/remaster.html Kranitoko (talk) 12:13, 10 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Generally the specifically of how an announcement was made are not important in the long run unless noted by 3rd party sources. None of the RSes covering made not of it. --Masem (t) 12:53, 10 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
