Launch Virtual Academy is a public, alternative educational institution based in San Diego, California. Founded in 2016 and serving students since 2020, the academy provides an online-focused education model for students in grades 7 through 12. Operated by the Sweetwater Union High School District, the academy offers flexible learning options through a course-based independent study program. The school serves approximately 581 students and is led by Dr. Jesus L. Ulloa-Higuera[1][2][3]
Educational approach
[edit]Launch Virtual Academy utilizes a blended learning approach, combining online instruction with optional on-site activities. The curriculum features over 150 courses, with a student-teacher ratio of about 18:1 to support individualized learning. The student body is 88% minority, and 51% are classified as economically disadvantaged, reflecting the academy's service to a diverse population.[4][5][6]
Achievements
[edit]The COVID-19 pandemic spurred growth in online learning, prompting an expansion of virtual options across San Diego County.[7]
In April 2024, Keith Ballard, a music educator within the Sweetwater Union High School District, was inducted into the National Teachers Hall of Fame for his work in mariachi music education and cultural programs.[8]
