Dr. Santos station is an under-construction Light Rail Transit (LRT) station located on the LRT Line 1 (LRT-1) system in Parañaque. It is part of the LRT-1 South Extension Project. The station would be situated in between Dr. Santos Avenue (from which it derives its name, itself named after former Rizal governor Arcadio Santos), CAVITEX–C-5 Link and C-5 Extension in Parañaque, a few hundred meters behind SM City Sucat. It will replace Baclaran as the southern terminus of the line.
History
[edit]Dr. Santos station was first planned as part of the Line 1 South Extension, which calls for a mostly elevated extension of approximately 11.7 kilometers (7.3 mi). The extension will have 8 passenger stations with an option for 2 future stations (Manuyo Uno and Talaba).[2] The project was first approved on August 25, 2000 and the implementing agreement for the project was approved on January 22, 2002.[3] However, construction for the extension was repeatedly delayed until the project was shelved years later.
The plans for the southern extension project were restarted as early as 2012 during the second Aquino administration and was expected to begin construction in 2014 but was delayed due to right of way issues. The issues were resolved in 2016 and the project broke ground on May 4, 2017.[4] Meanwhile, construction works on the south extension began on May 7, 2019 after the right-of-way acquisitions were cleared.[3]
As of April 30, 2024[update], Phase 1, where the station is part of, is 98.2% complete. It is expected to open on November 16, 2024, and will serve as the southern terminus of LRT Line 1 until the opening of Phase 2, which is expected by 2031.[5]
Transportation links
[edit]Dr. Santos station will be situated next to an under-construction intermodal transport terminal accessible via Dr. Santos Avenue, which will accommodate public transportation modes such as jeepneys, buses, taxis, and tricycles.[6][7]
