Abtisam Mohamed (born May 1980[1]) is a British Labour Party politician who has been Member of Parliament (MP) for Sheffield Central since 2024.[2] She is the first Yemeni person to be elected as a British MP,[3] and the first woman of Arab background. [4]
Early life
[edit]Mohamed was born in Yemen, one of eight. She moved, in 1982, with her mother and sister to join her father and grandfather in Sheffield, who were working in the city's steel industry. Despite only achieving 4 GCSEs while at school and then working in the voluntary sector, during her adulthood she worked to achieve the necessary qualifications to work first as a teacher, studying Education at the University of Sheffield,[5] and then a lawyer.[6][3] She ran her own legal practice in human rights and immigration, which she closed down following her election in 2024 (in line with Labour party policy for its MPs). [7]
Politics
[edit]After spending the first half of the 2010s campaigning against the closure of public services, in 2016, she became a councilor for the Firth Park ward on the Sheffield City Council.[8][6][9] She was selected to replace the former MP Paul Blomfield, who was standing down, in 2022, beating prospective candidates including Eddie Izzard.[8][10][11]
