Categories

[edit]

Is it allowed to use category pages? It seems like a cheap trick to me, and is a subject of constant debate among the Wikiracers of my region. ChaseU 05:16 15 January 2006 (UTC)

I was going to ask the same question. Are category pages allowed? -- penubag  (talk) 16:02, 29 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hard pages

[edit]

Is it just me, or is it completely impossible to wikirace to the page Mashimaro? Perhaps this page could be added to the list. authraw 21:37, 8 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It is possible, but difficult. Add it if you want. Setokaiba 22:07, 8 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
To be honest, i think the impossible (or very hard) to get to list is quite pointless seeing as theres such a large amount of random, obscure rubbish in the world that it would be quite hard to list it all. -Unsigned
I easily got from Strawberry shortcake to Leawarra railway station. It really isn't that hard. Strawberry Shortcake>GBA>Pokemon>Japan>Pacific Ocean>Australia>Victoria>Melbourne>Metlink>List of train stations in melbourne>Leawarra Railway stations User:Bazzbee
It's actually pretty easy to get from Colosseum to Orthographic Projection: Colosseum > Italy > Italian Renaissance > Perspective > Orthographic Projection. Maybe that example should be changed? Spoonriver (talk) 07:00, 11 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
There's an even shorter path from Colosseum to Orthographic Projection: Colosseum > Cubic foot > cube > Orthographic Projection. I would agree that the example should be changed. Kvantri (talk) 12 June, 2021

Hello Kitty

[edit]

The page says Hello Kitty is the only wikirace never finished. I did one by myself and made it from Cat to Hello Kitty.

I was actually wondering about that statement myself--it's definately possible. I'll correct the artcile now. authraw 22:15, 14 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I personally use Japanese culture-kawaii-hello kitty72.139.184.107 13:45, 16 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Bah. Got from Mornington Crescent tube station to Hello Kitty in about seven steps. BCube|c|t 03:39, 1 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It was probably hard to get to the Hello Kitty page then (2-3 years ago). There's more links to it now though. -Deceased 15:26, 19 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • This was added to the page again in March 2019? I feel like the Japan-Japanese popular culture-kawaii-Hello Kitty route is pretty straightforward/obvious for anyone familiar with using countries as portals? I might support removing if anyone else agrees. —Shrinkydinks (talk) 05:03, 11 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Is the "Back" browser option allowed

[edit]

I was wondering this because whenever I've played this game (found independently at my school but also given the same name) we have always banned the use of 'back'. If there is no reply then I'll add this infomation myself and under 'how to play' as a suggested rule, like on the Wiki Race article. Superdantaylor 20:41, 3 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

We always play that you can use the back rule but it counts as an extra link and is added to your score. golf wise of course. -Unsigned

User pages

[edit]

I think we should add userpages not allowed. --GeorgeMoneyTalk  Contribs 04:30, 28 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Good idea, it'd be to easy for people to link ridiculous things to cheat there. Tyciol (talk) 01:05, 20 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Schools

[edit]

The end of the article is becoming like a list of schools who enjoy wikiracing! Surely there are too many to list? -Unsigned

This was independently invented by a friend of mine, and no doubt by dozens or hundreds of others, so I think I'll change the last bit. (I ended up deleting it, for lack of anything to replace it with. Attributing something like this to a single inventor is meaningless.)[User:130.36.87.102|130.36.87.102]] 13:34, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

Goatse.cx

[edit]

"www.goatse.cx- accessible by going to any country, Internet TLD, .cx, goatse.cx. almost any sexually explicit site can be got to thus." << this doen't fit here?! --84.115.136.73 23:10, 13 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

End page

[edit]

Can you look at your destination page up at the same time when doing the race? I invented a game thats almost exactly the same as wikirace with my friends and we always said that you couldn't but I'm not exactly the authority.Nathan Wonnacott 20:16, 2 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Cars to Jesus

[edit]

Actually does not seem that hard - from Cars (disambiguation) to New Wave music to Rock music to Christian rock to Jesus CharonX/talk 03:12, 16 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Actually cars > jesuit missions > jesuit > jesus TripsWithTiresias 7:56
I don't think that the article is saying that it is an espacially hard one to get to, its just an example of something much harder than apple to orange. Also, you can't use a disambiguation page But maybe we should use a harder one. Also is it just me or is it really hard to get to verbs?(not the page verb but anything that is a verb.Nathan Wonnacott 20:27, 2 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
At the time when I wrote that, yes it was simply because it was harder than apples to oranges (a simple one click link). Obviously Wikipedia has grown significantly since then so it makes sense that with more links Cars to Jesus would be simpler. Feel free to change it to a hard example if you wish. Deceased 14:07, 23 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Pic

[edit]

The apple-orange pic has been replaced with a big copyright symbol. I can't figure how that pic would have been "non-free", if it were screenshots of Wikipedia pages, but hey, I don't run OTRS. Somebody should replace it. Chubbles 02:56, 14 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I changed the picture with my own 'logo', im not trying to officiate over the game; it's just idle boredom. Hopefully it's okay for most people... -Unsigned

Creator

[edit]

Was there ever an official creator of Wikiracing? And, even if someone invited the term, I'm sure the idea existed before then. It's a game as old as wikipedia itself, and I doubt a real official "creator" exists. Certainly, the game isn't as new as 2006. People have played this game long before that. Admittedly I've heard "The Wikipedia Game" more than wikiracing, but it's essentially the same concept. -Unsigned

"It is said that 'The Wikirace' was founded by a two students at Bicentennial Junior High and many of the rules were also made by them." I don't agree with the previous quote so I removed it from the page. Like the above person stated, the game wasn't really invented by anyone. Deceased 14:04, 23 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Portals/Categories

[edit]

Are you allowed to use them? -Unsigned

Generally not. S♦s♦e♦b♦a♦l♦l♦o♦s (Talk to Me) 02:39, 11 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It says on the page portals are allowed, but I'm not sure about categories -- penubag  (talk) 16:03, 29 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Keyhole/way

[edit]

The article Keyhole rediects to keyway, also keyway has replaced almost all links that said keyhole. Not knowing this caused me to take 7 steps instead of 6, thus I am replacing the word keyhole with keyway in the list. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Akjar13 (talkcontribs) 12:53, 17 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Has anybody gotten from Jesus Christ to Subway (restaurant)?

[edit]

I got there with Jesus Christ > Issac Newton > Albert Einstein > United States > Fast food > Fast food restaurant > Subway (restaurant). Did anybody do it faster. I was just wondering because it was an example on the page. JHUbal27TalkE-mail 05:52, 17 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Two Categories for same thing.

[edit]

Hi, I was wondering why there were two categories, "online race tracks" and "wikiracing websites". They seem to cover the same information but slightly differently worded. Perhaps one should be deleted? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Abuck97 (talkcontribs) 04:56, 2 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Solver

[edit]

Is there some website that allows you too solve a wikirace, given two random targets, somewhat like a crossword solver? I'm just wondering. --- TheChampionMan1234 03:54, 3 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I found a few, but none of them work, I was able to find WikiDistrict which is the only one that works AFAIK. - Champion (talk) (contribs) (Formerly TheChampionMan1234) 06:55, 2 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Never mind, it doesn't always work either, I tried Mao Zedong to Windows XP and it did work. But from Mao Zedong to Technical support scam it gives the error "Path not found". http://beta.degreesofwikipedia.com I found before, but it works only 10-20% of the time. - Champion (talk) (contribs) (Formerly TheChampionMan1234) 07:01, 2 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Haha, I tried degreesofwikipedia.com again and it did work from Mao Zedong to Technical support scam. I am yet to encounter one that works 100% of the time, so it gave me this (compare to [1]):

Array
(
    [maozedong] => Mao_Zedong
    [johnmccain] => John_McCain
    [shill] => Shill
    [technicalsupportscam] => Technical_support_scam
)

Duplicates

[edit]

Why does Wikipedia have this article, in addition to Wikiracing and Wikipedia:Wiki Game? All three seem to cover the same topic. AJLooMNoS (talk) 15:33, 1 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • Wikiracing is a mainspace article, so it's an actual article in the encyclopedia. This one exists separately from that to be a community project and discussion place. It's nice to be able to discuss and add details that wouldn't stand in the main wikipedia (unsourced material, opinions, recommendations and tips). Not sure about Wikipedia:Wiki Game; might be worth merging the projects. I'll have a look. —Shrinkydinks (talk) 06:00, 11 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Wikiraces are common in classroom environments in which kids are bored.

Franz Ferdinand

[edit]

I got to Franz Ferdinand from USA in 3 clicks USA>Federal Republic>Austria>Franz Ferdinand. Should we remove it from the list? Əntitled (talk) 03:05, 8 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, Franz Ferdinand's page is not particularly difficult to get to. The easiest way is via the page on World War I, which has a direct link to Franz Ferdinand, and can be reached from just about any nation which had involvement in WWI or even WWII, since that page has a link of its own to WWI. The tracker Wikispeedia don't work with any article with special characters in the title (ie: Cú Chulainn, How Heavy Are the Dumbbells You Lift?). Aramati, the llama 00:55, 22 April 2020 (UTC)

Merger Proposal

[edit]

I propose to merge this page (Wikipedia:Wikirace) into Wikipedia:Wiki Game. The other page was created first, is much better-formatted and explained, and sees consistently 4-5x more pageviews. I think this article provides a few great additional resource the other one does not have: (1) good target pages, (2) strategies, (3) the title/WP:RACE shortcut, (4) sometimes better instructions decomposition. I believe by merging the great parts of this article into the other, we could provide one comprehensive resource that best serves the community. What do other editors/watchers of this page think?

Please come discuss on the other page's talk page (per etiquette outlined in WP:MERGEPROP). —Shrinkydinks (talk) 06:35, 11 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
