November is Native American Heritage Month

[edit]

Why is Wikipedia completely ignoring the genocide of Native Americans by Europeans by refusing to acknowledge that November is Native American Heritage a month? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.136.111.101 (talk) 15:22, 3 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

article finally moved from personal sand box to main article space

[edit]

Hi, I have finally finished my article Esther Berlin-Joel. I was working on it on my personal sandbox (since mid-October) and move it today. Can I submit it to the Wikipedia Asian Month, or does it not qualify? Thanks --Golan's mom (talk) 11:14, 6 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Any suggestions?

[edit]

I'm interested in Southeast, East, and Central Asia. Bhutan and Nepal are ok as well. Hayholt (talk) 14:35, 6 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Hayhold: It's worth checking out some related WikiProjects and see if they have requested articles. WikiProject Bhutan, for example, has a list of requested articles here (though note that just because an article is listed there doesn't necessarily mean it's notable). Cheers, ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 02:43, 10 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I started this one today, from a redirect to the surname page "Osterhout"--so it's a new article, but it's not reading that way when I submit it at Fountain. If it doesn't count that's fine, but in case it should, thought I'd mention it here. Penny Richards (talk) 00:55, 7 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Does replacing a redirect with a proper article count?

[edit]

I replaced a redirect with a proper article on Amolops mengyangensis. I would expect this to count as a new article, but the tool refuses to accept it. Is there a way to adjust the tool, or register manually? Cheers, Micromesistius (talk) 17:34, 7 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Micromesistius! Let me try to figure out why this isn't working, although it should. The user who maintains Fountain is not on the English Wikipedia, but he is on Meta, so let me get back to you with what we can do since normally stub expansion is eligible. --Sky Harbor (talk) 02:14, 11 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
If need be, we can execute a round-robin and copy paste move by changing a redirect's target and creating a new article at the now-available name. It's not the most artful solution, but it would work and result in the creation of an article that Fountain would except.--SamHolt6 (talk) 02:35, 11 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The problem with that solution is it would break article histories. I wonder though if it would be possible to do that, submit the article through Fountain, then re-merge the histories back together. --Sky Harbor (talk) 03:38, 11 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Do recreated articles count?

[edit]

Yume Miyamoto is an article I plan to submit. However, technically the article wasn't created by me but by two other users. However, the article was twice deleted on notability grounds; however, per a request made to one of the deleting admins, I requested a partial restore to my userspace. I worked on it, and on November 3, I moved the newly re-wrtten article to the mainspace. Although I'm not the original creator, most of the content was done by me, including most of the lede, and all of the biography, as well as all of the sourcing. Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 03:32, 12 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Recreated articles should count, Narutolovehinata5. :) (By the way, finally, more Filipino editors joining WAM!) --Sky Harbor (talk) 23:57, 13 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Sky Harbor: Thanks; however, it seems Fountain won't let me submit the article. Can I get some help here? Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 00:09, 14 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I see it's recognizing the 2016 creation date. Fountain does not recognize articles created before November 1, 2018, so we may have to count it manually. Please indicate your article in the list of participants (as was done in 2015) so we can keep track of it. --Sky Harbor (talk) 03:20, 14 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Sky Harbor: I listed it at Wikipedia:Wikipedia Asian Month/Submissions; does that count? Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 03:53, 14 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that's fine. Thanks! :) --Sky Harbor (talk) 04:09, 14 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Queries on WAM

[edit]

Hello! I have 2 questions regarding WAM.

  1. If my article has been rejected, is it possible that a review of it be undertaken to see if it can be accepted once I have reedited it?
  2. If a review is possible, how do I flag the reedited article for review? Do I resubmit the article or would all articles be automatically reviewed again at a later time? Greateasterner (talk) 13:40, 13 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Draft creation vs article namespace

[edit]

So, if an article was first opened as a draft before November, but was moved to mainspace on November, does it count? Regardless, the fountain tool won't accept them. Juxlos (talk) 11:08, 18 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

It should count, Juxlos, but Fountain does have technical limitations, including being unable to count pages that were made after November 1, 2018 but were made from redirects, or pages that were moved to mainspace from elsewhere. Please submit the article manually at Wikipedia:Wikipedia Asian Month/Submissions so we can keep tabs on it. --Sky Harbor (talk) 17:38, 18 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Sirimavo Bandaranaike

[edit]

In honor of Asian month, a group of editors has worked to completely rewrite, cite and submit the article on Sirimavo Bandaranaike for GA review. I am curious as to why featured lists are included, but GA/FA improvements on articles are not. SusunW (talk) 16:46, 18 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @SusunW: Thanks for the question, I can see why that seems odd. WAM's scope is to only count newly-created articles. Newly-created lists are considered to be too low of a bar to be counted for WAM, but if enough effort is put into a newly-created list for it to become featured, it is considered a significant-enough creation that it will count. This is just a minimum standard for a newly-created list to be counted, similar to how new articles need to have 300 words / 3,000 characters in order to be counted. Note that editing an existing list to become featured would not be counted for WAM.
Our scope has been limited to new articles, as the goal for us has been to cover previously untouched topics, and we have seen significant enough participation by focusing on just that. The international team will discuss including GA/FA improvements for next year, however, perhaps on a per-language basis - depending on the sort of numbers and content we see this year. Thanks, ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 17:48, 18 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
SuperHamster Thanks for the explanation. I guess my point is that to take an article to GA or FA, you are pretty much completely re-writing the thing from scratch, checking all the references, making sure there are no gaps in coverage. What was started with and what it ends up as are usually completely different versions. Obviously, with the backlog in review, it probably won't be promoted within the month, but instead getting it to the nomination stage. I get that the promotion is to improve the quantity, but overall, quality is to my mind more important. It would be nice to at least list article improvements somewhere. SusunW (talk) 18:00, 18 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@SusunW: Certainly great points, and yea - you nailed one of the difficulties with tracking noms, being the time it can take for nominations to go through. Too late for this year, but for next year we can definitely look at having a list of some sort for people to submit additional contributions, at the very least just to track them. Great work with all your articles this year, by the way :) ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 07:53, 29 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Asian Month is a state of mind!

I am facilitating a Wikipedia workshop in a classroom this month.

The theme is "Asian American activism". I know that Wikipedia Asian Month is typically in November, but I will be presenting the November event as an example of wiki-activism to make a change. Gorkha

[edit]

Gorkha many say it's the land of the brave, which may be true in ancient days. But the modern gorkha (Gandaki district/Nepal) is not just the land of the brave its so much more than that . I was lucky at the same time honored to have been born there so this is a small article about gorkha. Long time back Gorkha was a tiny country by itself previously ruled by kings but had a much larger fate that made a huge nation like Nepal. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 110.44.115.245 (talk) 11:10, 8 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

article requirement

[edit]

Hello. When I tried to submit one of my (mr wikipedia) articles on fountain tool, it showed me the article statistics before final submission. My article was "11,928 bytes, 235 words", and yet it had a green tickmark next to it. So I am confused, is the article eligible or not as it it below 300 words? existing-article improvement vs. new-article creation

[edit]

I worked on the existing article about Indian musician Debashish Bhattacharya. It has a warning at the top about needing citations, of which the article only had two when I started a week and a half ago. I haven't had a chance yet to figure out how to remove that warning, but plan to. It also required major copy-editing, and some noteworthy additions to bring it up to date. Anyway, although I read in multiple places that improvements would be accepted for WAM, I couldn't see where the Fountain accommodated such contributions. Instead I left my info (seven hours before the deadline) over at Wikipedia:Wikipedia_Asian_Month/Submissions. Peterh6658 (talk) 07:20, 1 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Did my submission go through...?

[edit]

Hi, I just created Song I-han and I added it to the dashboard linked in the "submit contributions" button. I genuinely can not tell if the article has been submitted for WAM. plicit 12:19, 1 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I also can't see how to submit on the dashboard this year. I eventually assigned the article to myself, like WAM was a class. Maybe there's something missing in the process, or maybe the process has changed this year? Penny Richards (talk) 16:33, 1 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Explicit and Penny Richards thanks both of you for participating in WAM 2022. This year international organizers decided to use the program and event dashboard instead of the Fountain tool. Explicit your article Song I-han, and Penny Richards your article Nobuko Nabeshima has submitted per dashboard report. Warm Regards, ZI Jony (Talk) 17:32, 1 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I created https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Emi_Tsutsumi but can't see how to add it to the tool. Should I not be creating it as a draft? Fujibeard (talk) 18:01, 1 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I am also not clear on the process here. I have started a first one Injo Beng Goat and tried to submit it using the link offered at the event page but it simply brought up an analysis of the article and did not appear to submit it. Perhaps the documentation can be updated with a clearer explanation of the steps necessary to submit it? --Dan Carkner (talk) 00:02, 2 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Is the tool different this year? I've submitted Kaikado using the main Asian Month page, but it comes up with something called Article Finder. I prefer the Fountain tool, as it would give us a word count and tell us if the article qualiifes. Can we still use Fountain? Oaktree b (talk) 00:06, 2 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I also prefer the word count tool in Fountain. The program and event dashboard didn't show the article I made last night until this morning (which is fine, I don't mind a delay), but I don't think the word counter is right. It says that my new article, Chiyo Tsutsumi is 600 words, but I just copied the prose content into Microsoft Word and their word counter said 259. I'll add more content later to make sure I hit the minimum before the end of the month, but it's a bit inconvenient to use a whole other tool to count words. Will the judges have to do the same, or are they also using the word counter in the dashboard? I hope they don't have to use another tool, that seems like it would be very inconvenient for them since they have to review all of the submissions. Let us know if there's anything we can do to help make this easier! Mcampany (talk) 23:35, 2 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I tend to draft my stuff in Word first then copy paste here. Then go preview, copy and back into Word, so it doesn't show all the formatting needed for wiki, then get the real word count. It's not perfect, but I'd rather edit on my own time with what I know. Oaktree b (talk) 02:51, 3 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, loved the word count function with Fountain, and the quick updating. The other problem I'm seeing is that everything we do on Wikipedia will be logged on the dashboard--not just what we submit for WAM. That's usually fine for an afternoon editathon, but for a whole month, that's going to catch a lot of irrelevant edits. This doesn't bother me, but it might be a extra hassle for the organizers. Penny Richards (talk) 00:25, 3 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@ZI Jony: I have now approved it. plicit 23:50, 3 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Explicit: thanks. MSG17, Narutolovehinata5, SuperHamster Per participants request, and for their comfortable I've created fountain editathon, and we will review articles on fountain. Any way to submit this article that I turned from a redirect into an article?

[edit]

Today I created Censorship in Indonesia for this contest, which was merely a redirect before. But because the Fountain tool identifies it as having been created in 2016 by someone else, I cannot submit it. Is there any way for the judges to manually add it, since clearly I created a new article for this too? thanks, Dan Carkner (talk) 02:33, 7 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

First, thank you all for your work on Wikipedia Asian Month 2022! Definition of cities in China

[edit]

Hello,

the same city is defined differently. The columns with 2010 population figures available at https://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/中華人民共和國城市人口排名 are, according to the translation programme referring to: 1. column:地區人口 (regional population): 地級行政區 (prefecture-level administrative region) 2. column:市轄區人口 (city area population): 市轄區 (City area) composed of 縣級市 (county-level cities) 3. 城鎮人口 (Urban population): City area without 鄉村人口 (rural population)

Are cities defined by their administrative area only or also otherwise?

@ZI Jony I created the article on the 29 November of a redirect. I do not really know if we were to reply here or there. And creations of a redirect is also the header of the discussion. If first I get invited to submit it also if the redirect wasn't created by me on the 30 October but then get denied for not being created by me, there is something wrong in the process.Paradise Chronicle (talk) 12:15, 14 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Paradise Chronicle, I've reviewed full revision history, it was looks you improved article many times. However, I missed out the redirect that created by Xymmax! Could you please explain why you remove redirect and move the article instead of create a new? Warm Regards, ZI Jony (Talk) 14:31, 14 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The article was deleted after a deletion discussion during which I expanded the article several times. The vote count after my expansion was even and following I waited until more sources appeared to give notability. After the UNESCO General Secretary also deplored her death and raised concerns on the working conditions of journalists I created a new article from the redirect. I could have just created the article Death of Sadaf Naeem, but I chose to re-create Sadaf Naeem and then move the article to Death of Sadaf Naeem. Paradise Chronicle (talk) 14:53, 14 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@ZI Jony Certainly, if you look at the UTC time with a scoop ruler, the period has passed. However, when I tried to post an article during Asian Month, I suddenly couldn't copy and paste from the draft of the article, and a communication problem occurred, so I couldn't make it in time. There is a resistance to being combined with the article creation that has nothing to do with this event. Dancer2211 (talk) 16:32, 14 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
