Categorisation in Bradford etc

Overnight an editor has amended the categorisation tree for Bradford so that Category:Visitor attractions in Bradford is now a subcategory of Category:Visitor attractions in Bradford District, etc. I'm not sure this is desirable, and I can't see any discussion of it at Talk:Bradford or Talk:City of Bradford. I have asked the editor on their talk page not to make such a set of changes for Leeds without discussion, in case they are thinking of doing so. PamD 08:55, 3 December 2011 (UTC)

This was done for other areas such as Wakefield where Category:Wakefield District was created so cannot see any problem with Bradford, or for that matter Leeds, consistency is more appropriate here. Keith D (talk) 12:25, 3 December 2011 (UTC)

In the course of related research I used the page on Oulton Hall, and got slightly misled. Sooo... I've corrected a couple of bits, (the original owner's name was mis-spelled, same as the De Vere site) and expanded slightly using the conservation reports, which seemed to have more history than anything else. I've left the URLs at the end. I don't know if anyone is taking care of this puppy, but it seemed polite to mention it. I've left the tags in (still needs work). Fiddlersmouth (talk) 20:16, 12 January 2012 (UTC)

Thanks, I have done a quick tidy of the references, added a category and changed the tag. Could do with some work on the prose and ordering as it jumps around a bit. Keith D (talk) 00:00, 13 January 2012 (UTC)
I was "just passing through", as another project led me to research the church, which must be one of the earliest (and best) neo-gothic heaps in England. The Oxford movement was still young etc, etc. I shall re-visit when I have more info. BTW top job, all of you! Fiddlersmouth (talk) 21:35, 13 January 2012 (UTC)

Suggested article for improvement

I've just noticed that Fountains Abbey needs a bit of TLC. It's in poor shape considering its status as a World Heritage Site. Please can we have a go at it?--Harkey (talk) 21:50, 26 January 2012 (UTC)

Do you want me to put it as B-class collaboration for Feb? Keith D (talk) 23:17, 26 January 2012 (UTC)
Good idea, Keith. It's C-class at the moment but looking quite poorly even for C ! I know we have members who are experts on various aspects e.g.architecture, history, etc. so they may well have some of the the information to hand. It is not really well covered elsewhere online as far as I can see.--Harkey (talk) 23:24, 26 January 2012 (UTC)
Getting the sources is always the problem. Keith D (talk) 00:28, 27 January 2012 (UTC)
Library here has only 1 book in the catalogue but when I went to get it they say it has "gone walk about"! Keith D (talk) 18:28, 27 January 2012 (UTC)
I've reserved two books from North Yorkshire libraries -- surely they should have them, if anyone!--Harkey (talk) 21:16, 27 January 2012 (UTC)
Just had a look and neighbouring Warwickshire have the same book. They appear to allow adjacent counties to join library so may be able to get their copy. Keith D (talk) 21:55, 27 January 2012 (UTC)
If it helps, Leeds Uni Brotherton library has material in their catalogue you ought to find useful. They let you in free if you're a Leeds graduate. Fiddlersmouth (talk) 00:07, 3 February 2012 (UTC)
I have Pevsner's North Yorkshire volume, but it's 45 years old, alas ... --GuillaumeTell 00:48, 3 February 2012 (UTC)

Scale Lane bridge hull

Request for photographs - the new pedestrian bridge hull has reached a key stage in its construction - with the main span being lifted into place (started 25 feb 2012) - Request for anyone nr. hull with a camera and free time to get photographs at this point. As of morning 26th the photo opportunities are quite good for the 'family album' with a big "1000tonne crane" still in situ, and the bridge span still suspended from the crane..Mddkpp (talk) 13:50, 26 February 2012 (UTC)

Geographic location template

Hi. I know I'm not a member of your project, but have been editing articles on Goole Fields, Swinefleet and Reedness recently, because of their proximity to Thorne and Hatfield Moors. It seems really difficult to know which parishes are adjacent to each other, and I wondered whether there were any objections to adding the Template:Geographic location to such articles, as a means of enabling readers to find their way around a local area. Bob1960evens (talk) 09:56, 2 May 2012 (UTC)

I doubt there will be -personally I would prefer a short section "geography" that notes the bounding civil parishes/regions, and any natural boundaries (eg streams etc) that form those boundaries. Or even a map (which I see you've already got the hang of). One option for the openstreetmap maps is to see the image as background in a paint program, trace out the schematic map, and then remove the background openstreetmap map...Oranjblud (talk) 15:22, 8 May 2012 (UTC)
I have had a go at a geography section for Swinefleet. It is not as easy as I hoped to find what the parishes actually are. I note that Goole Fields has a parish map, with the parish coloured in, but it is not so helpful when the parish is on the border with North Lincolnshire, and so neighboring parishes are not shown. Bob1960evens (talk) 17:15, 23 May 2012 (UTC)
There is a similar map for Swinefleet I did the full set for the East Riding of Yorkshire though only used the ones for civil parish only articles. Keith D (talk) 19:14, 23 May 2012 (UTC)

Commons images

There's some backlog at wikimediacommons - in particular images wrongly placed (by bots) in certain "town" categories which should be in the borough categories (and then subcats).. The bots also place images in the wrong county/civilparish etc sometimes. Usually the one next door. In many cases there is a need for new categories, don't be suprised if the categorisation is plain wrong or just crazy - most have been categorised by a computer bot.

These are the worst I found. If fixed please remove the cleanup message.

I can say from experience that once done, the categories grow only slowly. They really need "adopting" though, and proper categorisation. Same issues exist with others eg see Category:North Lincolnshire — Preceding unsigned comment added by Oranjblud (talkcontribs) 16:31, 8 May 2012‎ (UTC)

Newsletter

For the newsletter section "Article activity", should we list recent DYK's? It would be interesting and also a good way of keeping our list updated. If this suggestions is approved by the powers-that-be, I would be happy to go through the archives a few days before publication and list all the Yorkshire DYK's. Apologies for tearing everyone away from the jubilee celebrations.--Gilderien Chat|List of good deeds 12:41, 3 June 2012 (UTC)

There is not that many DYK entries so could be added. Are you thinking of the full entry or just a note of it appearing? I usually get the newsletter info from changes to the project page so if the DYK entry is added there, with an appropriate edit summary, then I could pick it up. Keith D (talk) 23:33, 9 June 2012 (UTC)
I was thinking about just the new article, in the same style as the GA's, but I would also update the main DYK list at the same time.--Gilderien Chat|List of good deeds 16:52, 10 June 2012 (UTC)

Now that a new, separate article on the Jimmy Savile sexual abuse has been created in Wikipedia, do you still really want the main article for Jimmy Savile to be included?

We started a new article on the Jimmy Savile sex abuse scandal, as a branch off from the main article on Savile, and on the talk page of the new article,http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Jimmy_Savile_child_sexual_abuse_allegations, the info on this project and a tag and "assessments" from this project come up. Do you really want this article associated with your Yorkshire project? I can't see that it has much to do with Yorkshire specifically any more than many other places in the UK. Also I don't see how anyone can have "assessed" the article as it is so new. Can someone remove those tags from the article talk page please? (unless you really want it to stay). ThanksSmeat75 (talk) 19:03, 12 October 2012 (UTC)

See my reply on the talk page. Yes it should be there as the main page is under the project so should all of the sub-pages as you are looking at the whole picture of a subject. It would be there if the information was part of the main page as it was prior to been split out into a separate article. Keith D (talk) 21:30, 12 October 2012 (UTC)
For (because of) his extensive links to and associations with Leeds General Infirmary alone, and his birth and death certificates also both stated Leeds, recorded by the registrars at Leeds, which is in the historic West Riding of Yorkshire. He should also really be included in WikiProject Buckinghamshire (in virtue of (because of) Stoke Mandeville Hospital), WikiProject Berkshire and WikiProject London (in virtue of the Broadmoor "Lunatic Asylum", if not also for the White City and the Television Centre), and WikiProject Surrey (in virtue of the Duncroft Approved School for Girls). His connections to Scotland in general or to the Scottish Highlands in particular were however not particularly strong, neither was to the Vatican City in particular. Not WikiProject San Diego or WikiProject California though, I don't think! -- KC9TV 04:51, 28 October 2012 (UTC)
