Annual WPTC Cyclone Cup
[edit]I feel that we should have a Cyclone Cup on an annual basis. Starting with the beginning of the Calendar year, maybe, to be consistent (since the Northern and Southern Hemisphere cyclone seasons have different official starting dates). LightandDark2000 🌀 (talk) 19:17, 13 January 2021 (UTC)
- @LightandDark2000: For this first year, this is experimental. Let's see how it goes. I trust that it won't go too badly :) though if people don't like it, we might have to discontinue it. ~ Destroyeraa🌀🇺🇸 19:24, 13 January 2021 (UTC)
- Nah, I think it'll catch on. As long as we have enough participants, there shouldn't be an issue with it becoming an annual thing. LightandDark2000 🌀 (talk) 19:25, 13 January 2021 (UTC)
Non-tropical storm articles
[edit]@LightandDark2000 and Destroyeraa: I think articles within the scope of WikiProject Non-tropical storms should count in the Cyclone Cup, given the dates it runs on. Most of the Cyclone Cup runs during the off-season for most Northern Hemisphere basins, and users' activity with tropical/subtropical cyclone articles drops dramatically for many users. During this period, many users shift to actively editing and creating non-tropical system articles, such as winter storms, extratropical cyclones, severe outbreaks, etc. If the Cyclone Cup included these articles within its scope, then it would make the competition much more competitive, and most people would not be stuck at 0 points, as all of the current contestants are. It may also attract some new competitors to the Cup as well. Please write your thoughts on this topic below, and do not just write "Support" or "Oppose", give a reason. - Leaning Support – I think that including non-tropical storms within the scope of the competition would be a great idea, provided that the storms in questions are storm systems (cyclones) and not something like simple thunderstorms. There are many overlaps between these topics and a significant portion of the work on WP NTS is done by WPTC editors. What we need to do here is define the scope of the competition. If it's limited to just tropical cyclones, then we can't do this, but if the competition is open to any kind of cyclone, then I think that we can go ahead with a larger inclusion of storms. I'm personally for this expansion, but I'm fine with however it turns out, either way. LightandDark2000 🌀 (talk) 21:20, 4 February 2021 (UTC)
- Strong Support Excellent idea! Non-tropical storms (nor'easters, European windstorms) are cyclones too. ~ Destroyeraa🌀🇺🇸 22:27, 4 February 2021 (UTC)
- Strong support It would help the WikiProject NTS to regain the former glory. MarioJump83! 04:40, 8 February 2021 (UTC)
There's a new sheriff in town...
[edit]I will be the acting judge for rounds 1 and 2 of the competition since Destroyeraa will be absent during that time. I have struck out some items that were not correct and adjusted the points based on those strikes. Good luck to everyone! NoahTalk 19:25, 22 March 2021 (UTC)
