ROC Barnstar of National Merit

Hi,

Didn't see an ROC BoNM, so I made one. It was pretty tricky to make, too:

{{subst:BoNM-ROC|message ~~~~ }}

...gets you

The Republic of China (ROC) Barnstar of Merit
This is a test of the barnstar system. Had this been a real barnstar, you would have been notified. Ling.Nut 22:36, 6 January 2007 (UTC)

Awesome. AQu01rius (User • Talk) 23:04, 6 January 2007 (UTC)

Looks good -- but I'd also recommend having a version that would be akin to the shape of Taiwan like the one on the DPP flag, and perhaps one more that somehow harmonizes the colors blue and green, as variations. --Nlu (talk) 23:16, 6 January 2007 (UTC)
I can do that.. maybe tonight, maybe tomorrow; depends on how many chores my better half has planned for me to do ;-) --Ling.Nut 23:42, 6 January 2007 (UTC)

Erm, what do you think:

The Republic of China (ROC) Barnstar of Merit
test Ling.Nut 05:30, 7 January 2007 (UTC)

--Ling.Nut 05:30, 7 January 2007 (UTC)

Looks good to me. Barnstar of National Merit doesn't suit Taiwan's complex identity very well though. I don't know... AQu01rius (User • Talk) 06:51, 7 January 2007 (UTC)
That's what all the barnstars of this type are called. Here's what to type: {{subst:BoNM-ROC2|message ~~~~ }} --Ling.Nut 13:17, 7 January 2007 (UTC)
Looks good to me. --Nlu (talk) 16:00, 7 January 2007 (UTC)

(undent) to avoid fistfights etc. I'm just gonna take out the word "national." That should be safe. --Ling.Nut 16:15, 7 January 2007 (UTC)

It is my opinion that removing "National" is in fact POV (since it then put ROC at a lower stature than PRC), and with Ling.Nut's consent, I've reverted the two templates. Even if one believes that ROC's not a "nation" now, it clearly was for much of its history. --Nlu (talk) 17:08, 7 January 2007 (UTC)

Joining to the project

Hi there, i have seen the project and it seems so interesting. :D , How do i join in?. --HappyApple 21:54, 7 January 2007 (UTC)

Hello. Currently, I am working on the police system in Taiwan. It is named by National Police Agency (Republic of China). I would like to make that topic as a part of WikiProject Taiwan. However, I am not sure it is OK or not. Plus, I am just a new kid in the town. Please help me to do it and do it right.Chcyang

The Republic of China Copyright Code, article 50 state:

以中央或地方機關或公法人名義公開發表之著作,在合理範圍內,得重製或公開播送。[1]

I think that there should be a image copyright/fair use tag to tag the ROC governmental images with this explanation (which I would translate as "Works publicly published under the authorship of a central government or local government agency, or of a public legal person, may be reproduced or publicly transmitted within reasonable bounds"), but I don't deal a whole lot with images and templates. Perhaps someone might be interested in taking a stab at it? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Nlu (talkcontribs) 17:34, 10 January 2007 (UTC).

Naming Conventions

I think we should have different naming conventions than the ones in WP:China. It is confusing sometimes, because most of the people have their family names presented first, but some are presented last, such as Chien-Ming Wang. The names of the Taiwanese people are different from the names of the Chinese people, the Taiwanese names have a dash in between. So I think we should create new naming conventions for Taiwanese people.--Jerrypp772000 02:21, 22 January 2007 (UTC)

The Chinese Naming Conventions mentions about the use of Wade-Giles, so it shouldn't be that confusing. AQu01rius (User • Talk) 01:19, 24 January 2007 (UTC)

Soliciting comments: Double Ten Day

Hi all, I'm soliciting comments at Talk:Double_Ten_Day#RfC:_inclusion_as_a_Chinese_holiday. Would appreciate community input. Thanks. Wl219 21:57, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

The article about Shin Wen-Bing, a former president of Southern Taiwan University of Technology, may be deleted unless reliable references are added to the article. Please see Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Shin Wen-Bing. Perhaps an interwiki link could be added to the Chinese-language article on this person if one exists. --Eastmain 02:45, 17 February 2007 (UTC)

The discussion is now over, and the result was Keep. AQu01rius (User • Talk) 19:26, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

I created an article for Shu Chin-chiang, Taiwan novelist and leader of Taiwan Solidarity Union. It is still a stub and I welcome the Taiwan project editors to expand it. Wooyi 00:09, 25 February 2007 (UTC)

Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall

Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall: Why does this article have a high importance for Taiwan? I don't think it's that important, I mean it might be important to the ROC but this is WikiProject Taiwan.--Jerrypp772000 23:01, 20 March 2007 (UTC)

Wow how ironic. Jerry says that Republic of China is equal to Taiwan. Then he says SYS Memorial Hall is important for the ROC but this is wikiproject Taiwan, meaning that he admits Taiwan and the ROC is not equal. How ironic. You hypocrite. Alex678 23:54, 20 March 2007 (UTC)
I never said they were equal.--Jerrypp772000 00:05, 21 March 2007 (UTC)

You implied it. Stop being a hypocrite. You are contradicitng yourself all the time and the Wikipedia community is getting tired of your pro-dpp and pro-taiwan independence POV. Alex678 01:57, 21 March 2007 (UTC)

Please stop assuming bad faith. I never "implied" anything like that, if you are so sure, where are the evidence. Wikipedia community is getting tired of my POV, since when did anybody told me that? I never said I am pro-DPP, so please stop saying things that are untrue, and stop insulting me, thank you.--Jerrypp772000 19:04, 21 March 2007 (UTC)

I rated the Sun Yat-sen and Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall articles mid importance and I provided the explanation in the discussion page of Sun Yat-sen.--Jerrypp772000 20:10, 8 April 2007 (UTC)

Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall may be mid importance, but certainly not Sun Yat-sen. I have responded to your comment in the corresponding talk page. AQu01rius (User • Talk) 02:57, 12 April 2007 (UTC)

Bilateral relations discussion

I would like to invite you all to participate in a discussion at this thread regarding bilateral relations between two countries. All articles related to foreign relations between countries are now under the scope of WikiProject Foreign relations, a newly created project. We hope that the discussion will result in a more clean and organized way of explaining such relationships. Thank you. Ed ¿Cómo estás? 18:07, 8 April 2007 (UTC)

level of importance

I looked at the table and found the importance of KMT is rated "top" and DPP is rated "high". I don't understand why they're rated differently.Puchku 15:32, 28 April 2007 (UTC)

The KMT ruled Taiwan for a long time, and so is historically important, while the DPP is relatively young. But if you can convince other people to change the ratings, go ahead. --R1es 05:49, 29 April 2007 (UTC)
I changed the KMT importance down to "high". (AQu01rius • Talk) 06:05, 29 April 2007 (UTC)

User Box

For what it's worth, I've created a userbox for the project. I'm still a bit of a noob at this, so feel free to criticise and edit it.

Any thoughts? --Folic Acid 19:10, 17 May 2007 (UTC)

My proposed WikiProject Taiwan Userbox
This user is a participant in
WikiProject Taiwan.
If folks like it, I'd be happy to put it on the main project page (or someone else more qualified could do it). --Folic Acid 19:19, 17 May 2007 (UTC)
A lot of people don't like user boxes (myself included) which is why they were moved out of project space into user space. I personally don't think they should be promoted on WikiProject pages. --Ideogram 21:52, 17 May 2007 (UTC)

Um, I am not sure if you are aware of this, but the "Blue Sky with a White Sun" logo you used is not the emblem of the Republic of China, but the emblem of the Kuomintang. Also, in a complex political enviroment like the Taiwan topic, it is best to avoid the use of any national-related materials. Use a picture of the Taiwan island or picture of a aborigine would be better. Aquarius • talk 21:28, 25 May 2007 (UTC)

I also don't like this emblem. It is too pro-KMT and this is supposed to be a politically-neutral project. ludahai 魯大海 05:14, 17 August 2007 (UTC)

Translation dept

I think we can create an interwiki department that helps translate articles from other languages. I created WikiProjects of Taiwan on the Chinese and Simple English Wikipedia. I am not a good translator but others can help. Isn't this a good idea?--Jerry 20:19, 10 June 2007 (UTC)

I think a translation department should be attached to WP:CHINA since that will probably attract more participants. --Ideogram 21:29, 10 June 2007 (UTC)
I think it can be attached to both. I'm not only talking about English-Chinese translation, there can be other languages as well.--Jerry 21:41, 10 June 2007 (UTC)

I just noticed that WP:CHINA already had a translation department (how could I not know that?). So I created one for this project.--Jerry 21:44, 10 June 2007 (UTC)

The WikiProject Taiwan on the Simple English Wiki needs more members, can someone help me out?--Jerry 01:14, 14 June 2007 (UTC)

Taiwanese people by county

Hi, I noticed that there don't seem to be categories by administrative subdivision for people from Taiwan (e.g. analogous to Category:American people by state), any reason? I'm considering creation and population of a Category:Taiwanese people by county or something, but I wanted to be sure of the exact structure and nomenclature before I started this, since I suspect I may be opening up a large can of worms here:

  • Should the form be "People from" or "People of"?
  • Should this include direct-controlled cities and municipal cities alongside the counties (e.g. "People from Kaohsiung")? If so, is it necessary to change the name of the parent "Taiwanese people by county" to reflect this somehow?
  • Should there be an intermediate level of "People from Taiwan province" and "People from Fujian province", or should the Fujian counties be put directly under the parent as well?
  • "People from Matsu/Quemoy" or "People from Lienchiang county/Kinmen county"?
  • Should the county names be suffixed with "Taiwan", "Taiwan province/Fujian province", "Republic of China", or something else?

Thanks, cab 08:44, 14 June 2007 (UTC)

WPTAIWAN project banner

This banner now inserts an extra blank line after it, which doesn't fit with the other project banners. Also, at least one option, politics=yes, places what looks like another independent WikiProject banner below. This is a bad idea: taking up more space is selfish and rude towards the reader and other WikiProjects. Please fix. --Ideogram 21:42, 24 June 2007 (UTC)

Move

There is an ongoing poll for moving Senkaku Islands at Talk:Senkaku Islands. Mr. Killigan 04:45, 20 July 2007 (UTC)

I think the article's title is somewhat poor - it sounds like Chinglish. Ideogram says that it is a commonly used term in Taiwan and elsewhere, but I was wondering what the literal translation of the Chinese term is and whether we could come up with a more "polished" title. It may sound fine to people whose first language is not English, but it doesn't to someone like myself - something like "based in Taiwan" makes much more sense.

I've created Republic of China based on Taiwan as a redirection, in case you ever want to use it.--Damifb 20:51, 16 August 2007 (UTC)

If there were any concerns over people searching for "Republic of China on Taiwan", the re-direct would take care of that. John Smith's 09:45, 14 August 2007 (UTC)

I didn't like it either. As I had pointed out on the talkpage, I think the ROC on Taiwan sounds more like a concept and not a period of time. Although I know it's common, I think renaming the article Taiwan Post-War Period would be better.--Jerry 10:51, 14 August 2007 (UTC)
Ok, how about moving it to "Taiwan Post-war Era"? John Smith's 11:40, 16 August 2007 (UTC)

Why there are no Presidents of the ROC between 1927-1948 in the List of Presidents article?

2007 Pacific typhoon season

I have added this to our project as it falls both within the geography and science aspects of the project. New Formosa Band

Hi, I am hoping someone can help with this. I am attempting to write an article on the New Formosa Band, which is requested at WP:AR1. There is very little written about them in English - here, here and here is a little information in English. They seem to have been a part of an entire genre, Hakka (music), which doesn't have an article yet. But Google turns up almost nothing in English. However, under their character name 新寶島康樂隊, I get a lot of hits on Google, but I don't speak a lick of this language. Can anyone help me with putting together an article that will survive AfD? Thanks. Chubbles 09:13, 27 September 2007 (UTC)

Can anyone look over this article and its sources? The article is written/translated by the subject, which by itself is not a reason for deletion. But it also makes a number of claims of the kind "Jacobson promoted X → X happened" with the implication that X happened because Jacobson promoted them. It would also be helpful to comment on whether the subject is as known in Taiwan as the article makes it sound. Thanks. ~ trialsanderrors 04:41, 9 November 2007 (UTC)

I second trialsanderrors's concerns. The article does provide links to reference material. Please let me know whether the linked reference material is independent of Dan Jacobson and those connected with Dan Jacobson. Also, please let me know whether you think there is enough reliable source material independent of Dan Jacobson to support an WP:A Wikipedia article. Thanks. -- Jreferee t/c 18:13, 9 November 2007 (UTC)

Magistrate vs Commissioner

Does anyone know what the translation of 縣長 is? It seems to me that it is "Magistrate" on Wikipedia, but I've seen many usage of "Commissioner," for example in the book Forbidden Nation and in Taipei Times. Which one is the correct one to use?--Jerry 20:45, 21 November 2007 (UTC)
