Coordinators' working group
Hi! I'd like to draw your attention to the new WikiProject coordinators' working group, an effort to bring both official and unofficial WikiProject coordinators together so that the projects can more easily develop consensus and collaborate. This group has been created after discussion regarding possible changes to the A-Class review system, and that may be one of the first things discussed by interested coordinators.
All designated project coordinators are invited to join this working group. If your project hasn't formally designated any editors as coordinators, but you are someone who regularly deals with coordination tasks in the project, please feel free to join as well. — Delievered by §hepBot (Disable) on behalf of the WikiProject coordinators' working group at 06:36, 28 February 2009 (UTC)

Columbia City Paper
Does anyone in this WikiProject want to try and improve the Columbia City Paper article? The article seems to mainly exist for two anonymous editors to battle over who started the paper. There is no notability formally established. - ¢Spender1983 (talk) 00:23, 4 May 2009 (UTC)
I suggest we nominate the article for removal due to lack of notability. Lists of South Carolina newspapers generally do not include this one. See [1] and [2]. - Tsnyder9 (talk) 15:45, 29 March 2010 (UTC)
GA Sweeps invitation
This message is being sent to WikiProjects with GAs under their scope. Since August 2007, WikiProject Good Articles has been participating in GA sweeps. The process helps to ensure that articles that have passed a nomination before that date meet the GA criteria. After nearly two years, the running total has just passed the 50% mark. In order to expediate the reviewing, several changes have been made to the process. A new worklist has been created, detailing which articles are left to review. Instead of reviewing by topic, editors can consider picking and choosing whichever articles they are interested in.
We are always looking for new members to assist with reviewing the remaining articles, and since this project has GAs under its scope, it would be beneficial if any of its members could review a few articles (perhaps your project's articles). Your project's members are likely to be more knowledgeable about your topic GAs then an outside reviewer. As a result, reviewing your project's articles would improve the quality of the review in ensuring that the article meets your project's concerns on sourcing, content, and guidelines. However, members can also review any other article in the worklist to ensure it meets the GA criteria.
If any members are interested, please visit the GA sweeps page for further details and instructions in initiating a review. If you'd like to join the process, please add your name to the running total page. In addition, for every member that reviews 100 articles from the worklist or has a significant impact on the process, s/he will get an award when they reach that threshold. With ~1,300 articles left to review, we would appreciate any editors that could contribute in helping to uphold the quality of GAs. If you have any questions about the process, reviewing, or need help with a particular article, please contact me or OhanaUnited and we'll be happy to help. --Happy editing! John Lucas Miller
Hello. I'm working on the Wikipedia:Find-A-Grave_famous_people list of (potentially) missing biographies and I stumbled on the article John Lucas Miller. The article is strange because its only content currently is about his son John Lucas Miller, Jr. who was both an army officer and SC legislator. I'd be grateful if someone from the project can take a look and either re-write the article so that it's about the son or split it into articles. Thanks, Pichpich (talk) 23:08, 9 December 2009 (UTC)

WP 1.0 bot announcement
This message is being sent to each WikiProject that participates in the WP 1.0 assessment system. On Saturday, January 23, 2010, the WP 1.0 bot will be upgraded. Your project does not need to take any action, but the appearance of your project's summary table will change. The upgrade will make many new, optional features available to all WikiProjects. Additional information is available at the WP 1.0 project homepage. — Carl (CBM · talk) 03:57, 22 January 2010 (UTC)

I just put my name in the Participants section but I have noticed that there has been little activity lately. I'd like to ask a few things: How can I help rate or assess pages that are not rated? I know of 2 in particular, Beaufort, SC and Port Royal, SC.
How is the importance scale judged? I'm unclear who the project leader is, who are the admins here?

South Carolina articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release
Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.
We would like to ask you to review the South Carolina articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.
We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of October, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!

Question about this project
Greetings, I have been watching this project for a while and it doesn't appear to be very active and I had a proposition for the members to consider. I would like to pull this project under WikiProject United States. I am not necessarily talking a full merger unless thats what the members of this project want but here is what I propose.
- The project would mostly stay the way it is except for a couple things. I would replace {{WikiProject South Carolina}} with {{WikiProject United States}} and add WikiProject South Carolina to the list of Projects supported by WikiProject United States. This would include replacing the WikiProject South Carolina template on the talk pages of the articles with WikiProject United States/South Carolina (if you want to see an example you can look at WikiProject District of Columbia).
- I would also add it to the list of Projects supported by WPUS on the main WPUS landing page.
This would do a couple things that I think would benefit both projects.
- It would increase visibility of South Carolina and related articles to a much larger user base
- It would allow WPSC to more easily benefit from the Bots running for WPUS. This includes article alert bot that warns of Articles and Images for deletion or Promotion. This would ensure maximum visibility if an article relating to South Carolina was submitted for deletion or promotion.
- It would allow the South Carolina related articles to fall under the WPUS and South Carolina scope.
- It would somewhat reduce the maintenance required by consolidating the templates
- It would reduce the number of templates visibile on the articles
- In addition to the above, I typically cycle through all the articles in the WPUS scope every month or 2 fixing various things (sections, typos, persondata, categories, etc) and this would allow the South Carolina articles to fall under that much more easily.
I would like to begin the process of adding this project to WPUS's scope in the next couple weeks. --Kumioko (talk) 15:44, 11 January 2011 (UTC)
- No argument from me. Seems like it would be a good move for the project.--FrankieG123 (talk) 03:36, 12 January 2011 (UTC)
US Collaboration reactivated & Portal:United States starting next
Casliber recently posted a suggestion on the talk page for WikiProject United States about getting the US Wikipedians Collaboration page going again in an effort to build up articles for GA through FA class. See Wikipedia:U.S. Wikipedians' notice board/USCOTM. After several days of work from him the page is up and ready for action. A few candidates have already been added for you to vote on or you can submit one using the directions provided. If you are looking for inspiration here is a link to the most commonly viewed articles currently under the scope of Wikiproject United States. There are tons of good articles in the various US related projects as well so feel free to submit any article relating to US topics (not just those under the scope of WPUS). This noticeboard is intended for ‘’’All’’’ editors working on US subjects, not just those under WPUS.
The next item I intend to start updating is Portal:United States if anyone is interested in helping. Again this is not specific to WPUS and any help would be greatly appreciated to maximize visibility of US topics. The foundation has already been established its just a matter of updating the content with some new images, biographies and articles. Please let leave a comment on the Portals talk page or let me know if you have any questions or ideas. --Kumioko (talk) 19:28, 15 January 2011 (UTC)
Adding "Popular pages" to U.S.-related projects
A very interesting tool of the Wikimedia Toolserver is called WikiProject Popular pages lists. These lists are similar to project-related article lists like U. S. article lists used for generating assessment statistics. The Popular pages lists include the rank, total views, average daily views, quality and importance ratings for the listed articles. Here is the full list of projects using popular pages lists. An FAQ also is available at User:Mr.Z-man/Popular pages FAQ.
I recently added links to lists of popular pages as shown below to the U.S. Portal - WikiProjects box and the nominations sections for each of the selected articles boxes.
Portal:United States/Projects/Popular pages
Because this project was not included, I am bringing up the popular pages tool here. This tool makes it very easy to track three of four balancing dimensions when selecting articles for showcasing at a portal - quality, importance and popularity. When tracking the fourth dimension, topic, the related article lists tool (such as for U.S. article lists tool) also might be useful by filtering on categories of interest.
If you do decide to use this tool, feel free to update Portal:United States/Projects/Popular pages as well.

Abuse of the liberties at Wikipedia
I am a resident of Summerville. Upon encountering the town's page, I saw that someone had added a paragraph in the Demographics section. This paragraph revealed that Summerville was known as something other than what it is...something VERY unflattering. This Author went on to say that Summerville was a fine place to view unsavory people of a few types. I will be ever vigilant to edit these unwarranted additions to the article. One can only hope that said author finds himself answerable to his transgressions. Our Democratic society being what it is, It's no wonder to find yourself facing down a few who might have found themselves cast in the refuse pit, had they been born in Sparta. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.206.246.114 (talk) 15:04, 16 March 2011 (UTC)

Suggestion to pull this project under WikiProject United States
It was recently suggested that this project might be inactive or semiactive and it might be beneficial to include it in the list of projects supported by WikiProject United States. After reviewing the project it appears that there is some active discussions on the talk page and some content updates to the project page but being supported by a larger project might be beneficial. This discussion is intended to start the process of determining if the project members are interested in the project being added to the projects supported by WikiProject United States. --Kumioko (talk) 17:10, 6 July 2011 (UTC)

Discussion to remove the Automatically assessed logic from the WikiProject United States template
Greetings, there is a discussion regarding removal of the logic used to populate Automatically assessed article categories from Template:WikiProject United States. Most of the categories (over 220 Wikipedia wide) were deleted in February 2013 because they were empty. These categories were previously populated by a bot that hasn't run since 2011 and the categories aren't used. Removal of this uneeded/unused logic will greatly reduce the size and complexity of the WikiProject United States template. Any comments or questions are encouraged here. Kumioko (talk) 18:49, 28 August 2013 (UTC)
- Lest there is any confusion for people who don't speak the same language, the words "logic used to populate Automatically assessed article categories" refer to the feature that was supposed to allow this WikiProject's template to "inherit" class and importance ratings from other WikiProjects. Kumioko says that there are no longer any bots performing the function that formerly copied those ratings. --Orlady (talk) 23:31, 31 August 2013 (UTC)

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal
Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:48, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

WikiProject X is live!
Hello everyone!
You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!
Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

Suggestion
Hello all! I was curious if anyone else thought it might be a good idea to make a (nonbinding) guideline on how all the individual US state WikiProjects should organize themselves, to help standardize them. I originally put this suggestion in the WikiProject United States talk page, so feel free to look there if you're interested. It's pretty empty though; basically all they said was to see what each of the individual projects thought about it. Please tell me if you have any concerns with this idea; hopefully we can find a way for everyone to love it! Also, I'm new at making proposals, so please forgive me if I do anything silly. :) Hope that you like this idea! JonathanHopeThisIsUnique (talk) 04:57, 3 August 2015 (UTC)
This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. A certain degree of customization is available; WikiProjects and Taskforces can choose which workflows to include, have individual reports generated for each workflow, have deletion discussion transcluded on the reports, and so on. An example of a customized report can be found here.
If you are already subscribed to Article Alerts, it is now easier to report bugs and request new features. We are also in the process of implementing a "news system", which would let projects know about ongoing discussions on a wikipedia-wide level, and other things of interest. The developers also note that some subscribing WikiProjects and Taskforces use the display=none
parameter, but forget to give a link to their alert page. Your alert page should be located at "Wikipedia:PROJECT-OR-TASKFORCE-HOMEPAGE/Article alerts". Questions and feedback should be left at Wikipedia talk:Article alerts.

US 50,000 Challenge invite
Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject United States/The 50,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more states than they might otherwise work on. If there's the interest I will start 1000 State Challenges like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of states regularly contributing. If you would like to see masses of articles being improved for the US and your specialist/home state like Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon, sign up today and once the challenge starts a contest can be organized. This is a way we can target every state, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant and also sign under any state sub challenge on the page that you might contribute to! Thankyou.♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:35, 1 November 2016 (UTC)

We've made some enhancements to the original report. Here's what's new:
- The pageview data includes both desktop and mobile data.
- The report will include a link to the pageviews tool for each article, to dig deeper into any surprises or anomalies.
- The report will include the total pageviews for the entire project (including redirects).
We're grateful to Mr.Z-man for his original Mr.Z-bot, and we wish his bot a happy robot retirement. Just as before, we hope the popular pages reports will aid you in understanding the reach of WikiProject South Carolina, and what articles may be deserving of more attention. If you have any questions or concerns please contact us at m:User talk:Community Tech bot.

WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject
The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.
Portals are being redesigned.
The new design features are being applied to existing portals.
At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.
The discussion about this can be found here.
Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.
Background
On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.
Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.
So far, 84 editors have joined.
If you would like to keep abreast of what is happening with portals, see the newsletter archive.
If you have any questions about what is happening with portals or the Portals WikiProject, please post them on the WikiProject's talk page.
Thank you. — The Transhumanist 07:56, 30 May 2018 (UTC)

Does this place exist? See Talk:Art Tatum/Archives/2018#Parents' birthplaces. Many thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 14:21, 13 October 2018 (UTC)
- No, South Carolina native speaking. It's in NC: Statesville, North Carolina. -- Softlavender (talk) 14:27, 13 October 2018 (UTC)
- Done. Now resolved with your better source. Many thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 15:07, 13 October 2018 (UTC)
Bot run to auto assess some of the Unassessed articles

RfC on election/referendum naming format
An RfC on moving the year from the end to the start of article titles (e.g. South African general election, 2019 to 2019 South African general election) has been reopened for further comment, including on whether a bot could be used move the articles if it closed in favour of the change: Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (government and legislation)#Proposed change to election/referendum naming format. Request for information on WP1.0 web tool
Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.
We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:24, 27 October 2019 (UTC)
Photo req
Is there anyone in the area of McClellanville who can take a photograph of the windshaft of the former Marsh Island windmill, which is on display outside the Village Museum? It looks something like this, but the left had end will be a cross and not a canister. Said photo would be used in the List of windmills in the United States to illustrate the entry. Wikipedia appears not to have an article on the museum, so there's an opportunity for someone familiar with the area to write an article. Mjroots (talk) 06:10, 16 July 2020 (UTC)
Article project guidelines
Hello fellow contributors! (All 5 of you?) I have been growing through our project's articles that need to be assessed for importance. I've noticed a fair number of articles that have been added to our project (often by nonparticipants) which are about an individual who was born in SC but who has no further association with the state. Do y'all believe they should continue to be listed under the SC wikiproject banner? Muttnick (talk) 01:45, 12 August 2020 (UTC)
User script to detect unreliable sources
I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like
- John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (
John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.
)
and turns it into something like
- John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14.
It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.
The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.
Do note that this is not a script to be mindlessly used, and several caveats apply. Details and instructions are available at User:Headbomb/unreliable. Questions, comments and requests can be made at User talk:Headbomb/unreliable.

Missing or low-res county flag and courthouse pictures
Copied from Wikipedia talk:WikiProject North Carolina#Missing or low-res county flag and courthouse pictures
There are a few county pages in both NC and SC that lack good photos of the county courthouse and or flag. If anyone has any good photos of some, it would be much appreciated if you could upload them. The pages that lacks good pictures should have an upload box in its talk section but feel free to update other pages with older photos too. If you have any questions, feel free to ping me on this page or contact me on my talk page. Adding the pictures to the county page infobox is quiet easy, for a Courthouse picture, it should go in the "ex image" and then add a short description in the "ex image cap" section. County flags should go in the "flag" section along with county seals going in the "seal" section. Thanks again for your help, if you have any questions, feel free to contact me. Census population updates needed on some pages
Copied from Wikipedia talk:WikiProject North Carolina#Census population updates needed on some pages
If anyone has time, there are many city, town, and municipality pages that currently haven't been updated to include 2020 and 2021 Census counts and estimates. Currently, there are 6,830 pages that haven't been updated on all of Wikipedia. For most pages, there are three sections that need updating, the Introduction, the Infobox population count section, and the {{US Census population}} template in "Demographics." All the information to update these pages can almost always be found athttps://www.census.gov/quickfacts/fact/table/jacksonvillecitynorthcarolina/PST045221 (Jacksonville, NC for example) on the Census Bureau QuickFacts website. This script by DemocraticLuntz might be able to help but Thank you for your help and have a great day! DiscoA340 (talk) 01:20, 24 September 2022 (UTC)
- As of October 15th, all SC town and city Wikipedia pages have been updated to include 2020 Census count, population density, and town and city size (at least according to this list.) Most of this work was done by @DemocraticLuntz and his code, Thank you! DiscoA340 (talk) 20:42, 15 October 2022 (UTC)
County Seal images
Hi all, I'm quite new to Wikipedia and was wondering if someone could add County Seal images to each county page in SC? Thanks, I appreciate it! DiscoA340 (talk) 02:22, 4 May 2022 (UTC) (Member of WikiProject North Carolina)

Project-independent quality assessments
Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class=
parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.
No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.
However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom
parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present. Aymatth2 (talk) 14:26, 13 April 2023 (UTC)
