Suggestions for project

At the moment the various articles that relate to Beds are rather randomly categorised. It would be good to start to organise people, places, attractions etc.

Many of the locations need more info and expansion. Prehaps a Project could be to set up the list of places where we need more info, eg various villages etc? --Starrycupz (talk) 21:55, 14 February 2008 (UTC) Parts of Beds, (mainly Luton and the surrounding conurbation, and Bedford) have an industial past, this is something i think it would be good to expand on.

Getting the info boxes onto every site is a good start, and one i have added to pages i have been involved with.

--GazMan7 23:23, 9 October 2006 (UTC)

Welcome to WikiProject Bedfordshire! I like your ideas and they will certainly help to expand this WikiProject. Thanks. Lcarsdata (Talk) 06:19, 10 October 2006 (UTC)

i have spoken to leighton Buzzard town council regarding the Ouzel Valley Park, as they have aquired the flood meadows in the north of the town and have passed them over to the Greensand, ridge rangers to manage. part of the flood meadows to the south opf the town have been aquired and a bridge, over the Grand Union Canal has been built, linking the canal Towpath to the land occupied by Tiddenfoot lake in the park Known as Waterside.

info box

Info box to be added to Slip End, also Pepperstock how do you check the map reference? needs to be updated on Pepperstock. Would it be a good idea to list pages needing an info box so that these can be marked off as and when this has been added? Hopefully none of them will be missed this way? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by GazMan7 (talkcontribs) .

I like the idea of a list instead of using categories, it would also probably be easier to maintain. Lcarsdata (Talk) 15:45, 10 October 2006 (UTC)

sorry to cut in - (this may be in the wrong place) but what about kensworth, which is in bedfordshire dont you think this is important or is it to be ignored. - (signed - an angry kensworth villager)

all people of bedfordshire look at the relevnt places that you live in and add your inform ation, but please make sure that you can verify it with where or how you have aquired your information.(Christopher spence (talk) 00:44, 18 September 2009 (UTC)).

Bot request

Hi - I've responded to a request at WP:BOTREQ, and I'm happy to produce a bot to do that task you requested. Would you be able to give me links to the categories which contain the articles, and then I'll get on with writing and testing the bot. I think iw would be best to put the infobox status table itself on a seperate page for the bot to edit, and trasclude this onto the main inforbox page. This basically means that I can easily reformulate the whole table for each update (obviously, I won't make it place an edit if there is no change). If anyone has anything to add to the request, could I ask you to place it here? Thanks, Martinp23 19:36, 13 October 2006 (UTC)

The categories are as follows:

The page you can put the table on is Wikipedia:WikiProject Bedfordshire/Infobox status/Table. Thanks for your interest in creating the bot. Lcarsdata (Talk) 13:41, 14 October 2006 (UTC)

Hi - thanks for that. I've written the code, and the bot seems to be working. The onyl problem at the moment is that there are talk pages of non existant article pages, creating red links in the table - I'm going to tag those for speedy deletion now, as talk pages of non-existant articles. Let me know if there's anything you want changing in the table -and I'll try to do it! Martinp23 15:04, 14 October 2006 (UTC)

Infobox

Where do you get the MapX and MapY numbers for the infobox? I've put a box on the Caddington page, but don't know how to get the X & Y coords for the map. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Carre (talkcontribs) .

Project directory

Hello. The WikiProject Council has recently updated the Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory. This new directory includes a variety of categories and subcategories which will, with luck, potentially draw new members to the projects who are interested in those specific subjects. Please review the directory and make any changes to the entries for your project that you see fit. There is also a directory of portals, at User:B2T2/Portal, listing all the existing portals. Feel free to add any of them to the portals or comments section of your entries in the directory. The three columns regarding assessment, peer review, and collaboration are included in the directory for both the use of the projects themselves and for that of others. Having such departments will allow a project to more quickly and easily identify its most important articles and its articles in greatest need of improvement. If you have not already done so, please consider whether your project would benefit from having departments which deal in these matters. It is my hope that all the changes to the directory can be finished by the first of next month. Please feel free to make any changes you see fit to the entries for your project before then. If you should have any questions regarding this matter, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you. B2T2 17:27, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

Luton info box

I have created a Luton info box to be added to the bottom of Luton places/amenities. In time i would like to add the town crest.GazMan7 14:32, 8 November 2006 (UTC)

I like this template, however IMO it needs a slight bit of work done to it to improve it. For example the title in the center isn't actually in the center. Thanks for your work. Lcarsdata (Talk) 17:45, 8 November 2006 (UTC)

Wikipedia Day Awards

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. Thank you for your attention. Badbilltucker 21:05, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

Personally im not too keen on the current template so have designed this. Whilst in my view it is closer to Wiki normal styles its a bit big. Any feedback?GazMan7 09:49, 21 March 2007 (UTC)

Guidelines

Hello WikiProject Bedfordshire participants,

Just a line trying to promote some trans-WikiProject guidelines for settlement articles. WP:UKCITIES are guidelines from the "mother" WP:UKGEO project based on those at WP:CITIES (A "global" WikiProject for settlements that is US driven). They have been employed by a number of articles to standardise content, obtain a consistent style and approach and drive them towards good and featured article status with considerable success, and are so far also endorssed by Wikipedia:WikiProject Greater Manchester, Wikipedia:WikiProject Cheshire, Wikipedia:WikiProject Yorkshire and Wikipedia:WikiProject Sheffield, amongst others.

Not too many users (or indeed projects) are aware of the guidelines, and thought it may be helpful if all the county WikiProjects had a link to them to help them get the results they want.

As it stands, unlike other county WikiProjects, this project mainspace doesn't have a section entitled "Guidelines" - it may be suitable if {{main|WP:UKCITIES}} was affixed to such a section to raise awareness of the guidelines. Hope that helps, Jza84 02:19, 10 October 2007 (UTC)

This hasn't generated much of a response; I'll be bold and add this to the mainspace. Other county WikiProjects have since adopted this approach too (e.g. WP:Somerset and WP:KENT), so hopefully it's not contentious in anyway. -- Jza84 · (talk) 01:58, 29 October 2007 (UTC)

Gravenhurst Clarification

Hello all. I'm new to this Wikiproject and thought I'd do a bit of work on the Gravenhurst article as it's an area I know a lot about, and nothing has been written about the village yet! Before I start I'd just like to get the project members opinions on the current setup of Gravenhurst pages. I notice that in the place listings and new infobox Gravenhurst has been split into two articles - Upper and Lower Gravenhurst. Although these appear on the map as seperate villages, Lower Gravenhurst is actually a hamlet within the parish of Gravenhurst. I haven't heard the distinction between Upper & Lower Gravenhurst used for many years now, and it's not really used as part of the postal address any more. I wonder whether it would be beneficial to merge these two articles into one under the title of Gravenhurst, Bedfordshire? I'm happy to go either way, but I think it would help people trying to find the article in the future and probably lead to a better article (the Lower Gravenhurst article might be a bit brief!) if they were merged into one. Comments please...? TrevelyanD (talk) 13:15, 21 November 2007 (UTC)

Welcome! I would create a merged article, at least to start with. I have often seen on Wikipedia cases where editors think that something is "technically" distinct from related subjects and so have created a separate article. The result is a lot of tiny articles. I have myself merged a few of these: Tebworth and Wingfield into Chalgrave, and Great Offley and Little Offley into Offley. You could (and probably should) create redirects from Lower Gravenhurst and Upper Gravenhurst to Gravenhurst, Bedfordshire; and that will take care of the redlinks that already exist to those articles. If any Bedfordshire-based photographers could take snaps of courts in their neck of the woods (e.g. Luton Crown / County Courts, Bedford County Court, local magistrates courts) and add them to commons:Category:Courthouses in the United Kingdom, the photographs would be very much appreciated for List of courts in England and Wales and List of county courts in England and Wales. Just a note that I am working on a county map for Bedfordshire that will appear in the Template:Infobox_UK_place automatically. My apologies that Bedfordshire was the final county to map! However, hopefully it will help the project along. -- Jza84 · (talk) 01:00, 12 March 2008 (UTC)

Project Status

Like many others i joined this project, however the project doesnt seem to be actually doing anything. The member listed as the founder has been inactive on Wiki since June last year. If this project is going to get anywhere, we need to come up with a plan as to what should happen. The project probably ought to have a 'leader' of some description.

So any ideas as to how to take this forward?--GazMan7 (talk) 16:36, 25 March 2008 (UTC)

Museums in Bedfordshire

Could I ask for some help accessing local knowledge, from members of this wikiproject, on the behalf of the new WikiProject Museums? We are currently trying to identify articles within the Museum projects scope (& develop guidelines to help improve them etc). There is a List of museums in Bedfordshire. Could you take a look at the list for your local area and see if any are missing or create articles for any red links. Could you also add the new project banner "{{WikiProject Museums}}" to the Talk pages of the articles, so that we can identify those in need of work etc. Any help appreciated &, if anyone is interested you are welcome to join the project or discuss Museum related articles on the Project Talk Page.— Rod talk 13:46, 7 April 2008 (UTC)

Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

  • The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
  • The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
  • A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Please leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. This scheme should allow the team to start producing offline selections for your project and the wider community within the next year. Thanks for using the Wikipedia 1.0 scheme! For the 1.0 Editorial Team, §hepBot (Disable) 22:16, 4 July 2008 (UTC)

Wikipedia 0.7 articles have been selected for Bedfordshire

Wikipedia 0.7 is a collection of English Wikipedia articles due to be released on DVD, and available for free download, later this year. The Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team has made an automated selection of articles for Version 0.7.

We would like to ask you to review the articles selected from this project. These were chosen from the articles with this project's talk page tag, based on the rated importance and quality. If there are any specific articles that should be removed, please let us know at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.7. You can also nominate additional articles for release, following the procedure at Wikipedia:Release Version Nominations.

A list of selected articles with cleanup tags, sorted by project, is available. The list is automatically updated each hour when it is loaded. Please try to fix any urgent problems in the selected articles. A team of copyeditors has agreed to help with copyediting requests, although you should try to fix simple issues on your own if possible.

We would also appreciate your help in identifying the version of each article that you think we should use, to help avoid vandalism or POV issues. These versions can be recorded at this project's subpage of User:SelectionBot/0.7. We are planning to release the selection for the holiday season, so we ask you to select the revisions before October 20. At that time, we will use an automatic process to identify which version of each article to release, if no version has been manually selected. Thanks! For the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial team, SelectionBot 22:33, 15 September 2008 (UTC)

Missing geographical coordinates

Many Bedfordshire articles are missing geographical coordinates. Finding the latitude and longitude of locations, and entering coordinates into articles is straightforwards, and explained at Wikipedia:Geocoding how-to for WikiProject members. Having coordinates on articles mean that they turn up in GoogleMaps, MultiMap and other such places which link to wikipedia based on geo-coordinates.

It is now possible to get lists of Bedfordshire articles that have no geographical coordinates via Wikipedia:CatScan, for example:

Alternatively, if CatScan is down or very slow, you can find them by looking through Category:United Kingdom articles missing geocoordinate data.

The articles in the lists above are currently marked with {{coord missing}} templates, which need replacing with filled in {{coord}} templates containing their latitude/longitude data (or else have lat&long entered into the infobox).

There are about 55 articles missing coords - I hope you'll consider adding coordinates so as to make Bedfordshire articles more visible on the web. thanks --Tagishsimon (talk) 19:27, 21 October 2008 (UTC)

Update: 0 articles in Category:Bedfordshire articles missing geocoordinate data do not have geographic coordinates. Coords are useful for making the article appear on Google Maps & many other mapping services; and they allow our users to click through to see the article subject location on a map. There's a short guide to on how to add geocodes to articles ... it really is very easy to do. I hope you'll take some time to ensure that Bedfordshire is as well represented as it can be on wikipedia by fixing up the listed articles. thanks --Tagishsimon (talk) 20:16, 2 December 2008 (UTC)

Announcement: The 2009 Structural Changes in Local Government in England: A Taskforce

  1. On 1 April, 2009, a number of changes will occur that will affect a number of counties and districts in England, including some which fall within the remit of your project and/or county.
  2. The changes will necessitate a large number of changes to various articles on wikipedia.
  3. New articles may have to be written, old ones may have to be changed because they will then describe abolished former districts, etc, and numerous changes will have to be made to templates, category names, and articles about individual settlements to update information about local government.
  4. Because of this the Uk Geography Project has set up a specific taskforce to identify the changes to be made and then to coordinate the work of preparing for the changes and then implementing them when the changes occur on 1 April.
  5. The name of the taskforce is Wikipedia:WikiProject UK geography/2009 local government structural changes task force or WP:2009ENGLAND.
  6. You are invited to join this taskforce to help us all improve wikipedia in these areas by making sure the information is kept updated, and accurate.

Many thanks.  DDStretch  (talk) 21:47, 15 January 2009 (UTC) (on behalf of the taskforce)

Coordinators' working group

Hi! I'd like to draw your attention to the new WikiProject coordinators' working group, an effort to bring both official and unofficial WikiProject coordinators together so that the projects can more easily develop consensus and collaborate. This group has been created after discussion regarding possible changes to the A-Class review system, and that may be one of the first things discussed by interested coordinators.

All designated project coordinators are invited to join this working group. If your project hasn't formally designated any editors as coordinators, but you are someone who regularly deals with coordination tasks in the project, please feel free to join as well. — Delievered by §hepBot (Disable) on behalf of the WikiProject coordinators' working group at 04:55, 28 February 2009 (UTC)

This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. A certain degree of customization is available; WikiProjects and Taskforces can choose which workflows to include, have individual reports generated for each workflow, have deletion discussion transcluded on the reports, and so on. An example of a customized report can be found here.

If you are already subscribed to Article Alerts, it is now easier to report bugs and request new features. We are also in the process of implementing a "news system", which would let projects know about ongoing discussions on a wikipedia-wide level, and other things of interest. The developers also note that some subscribing WikiProjects and Taskforces use the display=none parameter, but forget to give a link to their alert page. Your alert page should be located at "Wikipedia:PROJECT-OR-TASKFORCE-HOMEPAGE/Article alerts". Questions and feedback should be left at Wikipedia talk:Article alerts.

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

WikiProject X is live!

Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

A large amount of unsourced information (windmill, sacred shrine, etc) has been added to this, mostly by an editor who thought it funny to vandalise Mary Seacole, and who chose to invent 3 new civil parishes, declare a civil parish as a unitary authority, etc. Could someone with local knowledge and sources have a look? It was largely unsourced even before he started. PamD 07:56, 13 July 2016 (UTC)

WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

If you would like to keep abreast of what is happening with portals, see the newsletter archive.

If you have any questions about what is happening with portals or the Portals WikiProject, please post them on the WikiProject's talk page.

Thank you.    — The Transhumanist   10:54, 31 May 2018 (UTC)

A new newsletter directory is out!

A new Newsletter directory has been created to replace the old, out-of-date one. If your WikiProject and its taskforces have newsletters (even inactive ones), or if you know of a missing newsletter (including from sister projects like WikiSpecies), please include it in the directory! The template can be a bit tricky, so if you need help, just post the newsletter on the template's talk page and someone will add it for you.

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:24, 27 October 2019 (UTC)

User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

  • John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Do note that this is not a script to be mindlessly used, and several caveats apply. Details and instructions are available at User:Headbomb/unreliable. Questions, comments and requests can be made at User talk:Headbomb/unreliable.
