Question

Wikipedia text and images are supposed to be free for both commercial and non-commercial use. So a "non-commercial use only" image would not be completely free. --Timeshifter (talk) 14:48, 21 May 2008 (UTC)

I did not create this policy. It was discussed in detail years ago. I agree with it though now. It allows Wikipedia pages to be copied anywhere without complications. --Timeshifter (talk) 00:18, 27 September 2008 (UTC)

I don't agree with the current policy at all. Wikipedia should be allowing itself the benefits of using non-commercial media. By not doing so, although it assures a convenience for commercial companies, Wikipedia creates no benefit whatever for itself. If this policy were repealed, the commercial companies would be well able to work around the encumbrance that some of the media is foreclosed to them. I need hardly tell you that loads of good media is around today, restricted to non-commercial uses, that would certainly enhance Wikipedia and could be used at Wikipedia right now except for this meritless policy. -- Seanwal111111 (talk) 23:06, 6 February 2009 (UTC)

I don't know what you mean by a Village Pump. Yesterday I spent time at Flickr searching for a suitable Creative Commons image for an article at Wikipedia, only to discover later that use of the image was prohibited by Wikipedia policy. If this is not the right forum to complain about that policy, I don't know what is. Anyway, I'd appreciate a pointer to a statement at Wikipedia that tries to defend the policy. That link goes to Wikimedia Commons. I don't have an account there; and before you say, "Create one, then," I thought the whole point of this page was that it was for uploading images found on Flickr to Wikipedia. Am I wrong in that assumption? --The Machine (talk) 16:00, 8 July 2008 (UTC)

Go to Special:MergeAccount and your account will become usable on the Wikimedia Commons as well. It's much better to upload free images to the Wikimedia Commons because then Wikipedias in any language can use the images.

Public Domain

I happen to be a user on Flickr, and I realize that Flickr does not yet have the public domain option for users unless they are affilated with the commons, which are museums who have accounts. BoL (Talk) 03:43, 21 July 2008 (UTC)

Question

What use is the main section on the page, below the "Go to Commons" banner? Users can't actually upload from here, and Commons has its own version of the main info section. It raises maintenance issues and possible contradiction (besides confusingly distracting from the Go to Commons message) to have it here as well - so what's the point? Flickr license verification

I have uploaded "File:Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln.jpg" from Flickr. I had to upload it to Wikipedia instead of Commons because the subject of the photo requires a fair-use exception. However, the Flickr photo itself is free. How do I get an admin to validate the Flickr license like is done automatically on Commons in case the Flickr photo disappears one day? Doubt about license

When we upload an image from Flickr to Wikipedia instead of Commons, should the license be verified (Some Rights Reserved) the same way we do when we upload to Commons? Novice7 ^(Talk) 16:02, 28 October 2010 (UTC)

What if the person on flickr changes the license?

Advertisements

There are two images on Flickr of historical advertisements of the girdles Playtex became well-known for in the mid-1900s.[4][5]

They both claim to have free licenses we would accept, but I find it hard to believe that an advertisement would be available under a free license. Do we just trust Flickr to have it right? And does anyone know about any specific rules to ads? Corporate 02:04, 9 December 2012 (UTC)

How do I upload my own flickr photos?

The page says: "This guidance only applies to uploading a work found on Flickr created by someone else (not you)."

The images in question appear to be Flickr-washed; one is clearly scraped from Facebook. Both images were deleted as copyright violations. Copyright images

Hi. I found some images in Flickr that are "all copyright reversed" and I want to use them in Wikipedia. What are the possible ways to upload them to Wikipedia. If geting permission from the owner is the answer then what are the steps to get permission and then prove to Wikipedia that the owner has allowed me to use his own work in Wikipedia. Flickr vs Commons Images

Admittedly, after a break of little time on Wikipedia (RL got in the way). I’ve been getting back into the hobby/work and more active and have noticed a lot more images imported from Flickr being used since returning to more active participation. After searching various talk pages, I can’t find the answers to several questions:

• 1) Is there a precedent for using pictures of a subject from Commons vs from Flickr. I’ve noticed some pages using a Flickr-imported image in the infobox despite already uploaded Commons images. It would seem that if Image A (Commons) and Image B (Flickr) both show the subject equally well and are equally relevant to the article, if Image A is from Commons that it should be used in higher priority than/in replace of Image B from Flickr.

• 1A) I haven’t used Flickr in a long time but I remember the creator can change the license. If that is still an option on Flickr, that seems to be an added reason to have a precedent/policy to select images from Commons before Flickr and if no Commons image of the subject is available than used Flickr and other outside sources to find licensed pics.

Images "All rights reserved" with "Public viewing" for upload?

Images are sometimes tagged with "All rights reserved" but when you scroll down it shows the Viewing Privacy to be on "Public viewing" for upload. Does this mean we can license it under Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-SA 4.0) because I've seen images on commons that have done this. Is this allowed? Sharing a video from Flickr

Hello! I tried sharing a video from Flickr but I get an error – "File extension ".jpg" does not match the detected MIME type of the file (video/x-m4v)."

How could I share a video from Flickr? This first one was just a test, but can't figure out how to share good Flickr videos on Wikimedia. Learn new things in 2024 (talk) 01:14, 30 January 2024 (UTC)
