Suggestion: "talk" to user whose text needs a citation

Automatic welcoming of vandals
Hi. I was suggested to come here from the #wikipedia-en-help channel on Freenode, since I asked a question there and was told this would be a good place to post it. I tagged a user's article about 20 minutes ago, as an attack page under G10 - moments later, I go to this guy's talk page and find out that I've welcomed him as well. Now correct me if I seem wrong, but welcoming a vandal to Wikipedia when I'm about to have one of his articles kicked into the next postcode, and him blocked, doesn't seem like the most sensible of ideas :) Is there any way that this feature can be switched off within user settings on the site, or is it permanently built into Twinkle? MarkBurberry32|talk 01:29, 24 April 2012 (UTC)
- Check Wikipedia:Twinkle/Preferences. I know that you can deselect G10 for welcoming a user when you tag the page. Ryan Vesey Review me! 01:44, 24 April 2012 (UTC)

Twinkle not working
Suddenly Twinkle stopped working. Is it related to the rollout of the new MediaWiki software?

"Traverse" module
While doing some testing yesterday, I noticed that the "traverse" module (for admins only) is well-and-truly broken. It was designed to allow admins to traverse through a category of images and choose to delete or skip each image. But it has been broken for a few weeks at least.
My question is, does any admin actually use it? If not, it can be removed; otherwise I suppose it ought to be fixed... sigh... — This, that, and the other (talk) 01:35, 22 April 2012 (UTC)

Open user talk page ...
I've tried repeatedly to enable the "Open user talk page when invoking rollback from user contributions" option by going to Twinkle/Preferences and checking the box. I always completely clear the cache. I've even gone so far as to get an IT expert to make sure my cache is entirely clean. But the function never works for me. If I revert a vandalism, the article reloads but I never automatically go to the vandal's talk page. I've tried with both Google Chrome and Internet Explorer. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Feel free to message me at User talk:Cresix. Thanks. Cresix (talk) 14:58, 3 May 2012 (UTC)
- The functionality you refer to is severely hampered by overzealous pop-up blockers. In particular, Chrome users sometimes report problems with this feature. Try disabling those (for en.wikipedia.org only, or for all sites if you like). — This, that, and the other (talk) 09:38, 7 May 2012 (UTC)
Twinkle overwrote FFD nomination
Just thought I'd report this in case any devs are interested, when making two FFD nominations at the same time (more or less, Twinkle overwrote one of the nominations and effectively removed it. Luckily I spotted this and resolved the problem, the relevant diff is here. Can anyone shed any light on why Twinkle behaved like this? Thanks, Acather96 (talk) 20:53, 3 May 2012 (UTC)
- You shouldn't do it. Twinkle is effectively edit-conflicting with itself, and the server seems to ignore self-edit-conflicts that occur within the API (i.e. from automated tools like Twinkle). So, go easy on Twinkle (for the moment - I think I know how possibly to improve this situation, but I have no time to look into it right now.) — This, that, and the other (talk) 09:38, 7 May 2012 (UTC)

I've propose to adapt the code for Twinkle into making an AfD bot that would complete AfD nominations. I have no idea if this would work. Please comment at Wikipedia talk:Articles for deletion#Simplifying the process. D O N D E groovily Talk to me 12:38, 4 May 2012 (UTC)
Default namespace for TW's talkback "Other page" option
If you use TW for adding a talkback with the option "Other page" and don't enter a namespace in the "Full page name" field, it will default to the User_talk space, like it did here. I this this is unintuitive as there already is an option for "Other user talk page". It would be better if it defaulted to the article talk namespace (best) or the mainspace (2nd best). jonkerz ♠talk 15:14, 4 May 2012 (UTC)
- This is really an issue with the {{talkback}} template. Personally, I don't know why another default would be any better. Talkbacks to articles don't make sense, and having article talk space as the default would be even more unintuitive than the current default. — This, that, and the other (talk) 09:38, 7 May 2012 (UTC)
Twinkle not filing requests - no errors reported
Just a heads up, I think there is something seriously wrong with Twinkle. I'm getting Twinkle in all the places where I should be getting it, but after 3 attempts to file a UAA report for a user with a promotional username, the report at WP:UAA did not file, and nothing was entered into my contributions. Another user whom I communicated with on IRC also attempted to file using Twinkle, and their report also failed to go through. There is a three hour gap at WP:UAA from 16:29UTC to about 5 minutes ago, which is where I assume nothing has gone through.
Would it be possible to have this issue checked out please? So far I only notice it on the ARV tab, but I haven't tried any of the others out yet. Thanks! Cat in the Hat | To the Thinga-ma-jigger | Whistle for Things 1 and 2 19:35, 9 May 2012 (UTC)

Requested move
Now that WP:Requested move just consists of putting a tag on the talk page (a bot handles the rest), is this something that Twinkle could handle? ▫ JohnnyMrNinja 23:33, 10 May 2012 (UTC)

- Placing a template is the only stuff which has to be done. The rest is done by the bot. Really simple now... mabdul 12:34, 11 May 2012 (UTC)
- I can go back to only asking for complicated things, if that's preferable. It has been a "get around to" feature in the previous incarnation (along with WP:proposed merger), but nobody got around to it. DB is simple too, so is PROD, welcoming users, etc. But my heart won't break if it doesn't get in. ▫ JohnnyMrNinja 19:12, 11 May 2012 (UTC)

Twinkle broken?
Starting tonight there seems to be a problem with Twinkle: On some pages (particularly those that should be speedily deleted) the Twinkle menu does not appear. Logging out and back in did not help. —teb728 t c 07:52, 8 May 2012 (UTC)

- Probably the code or the code being called is using console.log or something like it.
We could add this code in the global scope to create a dummy wrapper for IE (or any browser that doesn't support it). Just put the following code somewhere before calling any other libraries:
if(!(window.console && console.log)) { console = { log: function(){}, debug: function(){}, info: function(){}, warn: function(){}, error: function(){} };

Need help
Hello.
I'm stuck again with TWG.
I've got a quickform loaded using
form = new QuickForm( TWG.tagger.evaluate, 'change' );
and the form contains only radio buttons which have been form.append()ed.
When I click on any radio button, I'm getting the following console error in chrome:
Uncaught TypeError: Accessing selectionEnd on an input element that cannot have a selection.
In ff, firebug gives the error:
Component returned failure code: 0x80004005 (NS_ERROR_FAILURE) [nsIDOMHTMLInputElement.selectionStart] [Break On This Error]
Both are from the line:
if (form[i] !== null && form[i].type !== undefined) {
which is the line just after the beginning of a for in loop for evaluating the form's elements. No event has been associated with any of the radio buttons.
Further info: User:Siddhartha Ghai/vector.js loads User:Siddhartha Ghai/TWG-i18n.js which contains all the form elements. This in turn loads User:Siddhartha Ghai/TWG.js which contains the actual code for evaluation of the form (and the trouble-causing for in loop(in the function TWG.tagger.callback
)).
This problem didn't occur in forms containing checkboxes and a submit button.
Any help in fixing this is greatly appreciated.--Siddhartha Ghai (talk) 09:17, 13 May 2012 (UTC)
- You should never use "for ... in". Use jQuery instead:
$.each(form.elements, function(key, element) {
// iterated code: ignore the "key" parameter; the "element" parameter will contain each form element
});
- Ok, asked around at #jquery connect and fixed this one. However, it has revealed another perplexing problem. So I'm back to two problems.
- The original problem I was gonna ask after the above was fixed: I don't have a proper method of detecting subgroups yet. I need to be able to differentiate between the top-level elements, their subgroups, then their subgroups and so on. Till now I was using a regex match in the name property to find the number of . in the name (since the subgroups were always like parent.subname.subsubname etc. However, I found in a recent test that this isn't always the case. (If you wanna check this out, load the script as loaded in User:Siddhartha Ghai/vector.js, then go to the Tag file module and check out the last element (label test). The first child doesn't get the parent's name stuck with it.
The new unexpected problem: In the CSD tab (the one with only radio buttons), the buttons now work in that there's no console error. However, when Status.init takes place, the buttons and stuff don't go away, the status is just overwritten on them. Plus, the values of the radio buttons aren't taken as input either.
- This got fixed :) --Siddhartha Ghai (talk) 17:36, 24 May 2012 (UTC)
- Really sorry for bothering with this, but they're just above what I can handle. I just hope these are the last errors I encounter. Regards--Siddhartha Ghai (talk) 13:59, 14 May 2012 (UTC)
- PS:As of now, its set to only work in userspace (till its incomplete). You can use User:Siddhartha Ghai/Sandbox for this purpose if you like.--Siddhartha Ghai (talk) 14:15, 14 May 2012 (UTC)
- The twaddportlet and twaddportletlink code stopped working for TWG again, even though it's working for twinkle. Same as before, calling the functions from the console works, but the tab isn't added. Any known hacks around this?--Siddhartha Ghai (talk) 19:27, 15 May 2012 (UTC)

How can I invoke TWG from the JS console?It doesn't appear in the portlet. (I suggest you usemw.util.addPortletLink
for the moment, and then try fixing the portlet code later on.) — This, that, and the other (talk) 03:22, 20 May 2012 (UTC)- Note to self: use
TWG.tagger.createform($.extend(true, {}, TWG.messages[TWG.mods[0]]))
— This, that, and the other (talk) 11:58, 21 May 2012 (UTC)- Sorry for the late response.
- Here's how I get it to work for now:
- I haven't forgotten about this - I'll get back to you soon. — This, that, and the other (talk) 00:44, 17 May 2012 (UTC)
- Ok, asked around at #jquery connect and fixed this one. However, it has revealed another perplexing problem. So I'm back to two problems.
$.each(TWG.messages, function (k,v) { var mod = $.extend(true, {}, v); var id = 'p-' + mod.name; twAddPortletLink( function(){ TWG.tagger.createform(mod); }, mod.name, id, mod.altname ); });
- This adds the portlet menu and creates the tabs in it for the three mods currently in TWG. Meaning that the portlet code works fine when invoked from the console, just doesn't work/execute without console invocation for some reason.
- I have no idea how to fix the portlet code (I barely understand it). Right now I'm making do with console invocation (since I'm the only one using it), but I think there has to be a way for it to work as a userscript, only someone needs to find it. (I hope someone does.)--Siddhartha Ghai (talk) 17:36, 24 May 2012 (UTC)
- PS:This function is basically
TWG.tagger.tab
's manual execution bypassing namespace check, meaning that this will work in all namespaces and add the menu with all the mods.--Siddhartha Ghai (talk) 17:43, 24 May 2012 (UTC)

I'm not even getting an error banner anymore. Just nothing at all. Running Firefox 12.0 on OS X 10.6.8. Cleared cache, bypassed cache, and prayed to the cache gods. Still nothing. Disabled all the other gadgets, and tried adding Twinkle to my scripts too. Not a peep.
These are the errors I'm getting. I'm not sure which is relevant:

Unlinking
I wanted to unlink one page from a target page, as it was a different person than the target page was referring to. I assumed that unchecking the one I wanted to unlink was all I needed to do, only to realize that it's the other way around. I stopped the process, but not until 75 or so articles delinked, and I had to manually revert those edits.
So, to use this tool properly, I would need to uncheck hundreds of correct incoming links and leave checked the one incorrect incoming link. There is no "select/deselect all" option. It would be easier to use this tool if there was one, or if articles are by default unchecked, so that people don't make the mistake I made. – Muboshgu (talk) 15:35, 15 May 2012 (UTC)
- The "unlink" tool is intended to be used for "batch" unlinking jobs. To remove a link from one page, it is much quicker to simply manually edit the page in question. — This, that, and the other (talk) 02:55, 16 May 2012 (UTC)
- Yes, that was certainly true for this case. I wonder why it's for "batch" unlinking jobs, when it could be used also for single unlinks, if the tool was so designed. – Muboshgu (talk) 01:05, 17 May 2012 (UTC)
- Using unlink on a single page would be like getting a trolley at the supermarket, and then only buying a toothbrush. — This, that, and the other (talk) 01:31, 19 May 2012 (UTC)

IP Welcome
As far as i can see Template:Welc-anon has been removed from twinkle. It was a much more modern version and is something the others don't offer, is there a reason for this and is it possible it could be put back.Edinburgh Wanderer 21:53, 15 May 2012 (UTC)
- It is much better (less verbose) than {{welcome-anon}}; have you brought this up at the {{welc-anon}} talk page? I think {{welcome-anon}} could really benefit from slimmer wording.
- As far as Twinkle goes, I am really trying to keep the welcome template list to a minimum (to make choices clearer for users). However, the {{welc-anon}} template really is nice, and I'll think about it. — This, that, and the other (talk) 02:53, 16 May 2012 (UTC)

Add delsort functions?
I could suggest this at the github page, but I'm a little too lazy so here it goes. Wouldn't it be great or at least practical to allow Twinkle to have deletion sorting? According to a search I did, there are two scripts, but both don't appear to be maintained anymore. It would save a lot of time if it is implemented. Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 10:16, 22 May 2012 (UTC)
- It's on the "to-do" list at the top of this page. If the current delsort scripts are broken, then I suppose it becomes more of a priority. — This, that, and the other (talk) 00:30, 25 May 2012 (UTC)

- There is a problem which is causing conflicts with some older user scripts (those that use the old User:AzaToth/morebits.js instead of the new MediaWiki:Gadget-morebits.js and MediaWiki:Gadget-morebits.css). I suggest you try removing old user scripts from your personal JavaScript file. In particular, FurMe will conflict with Twinkle. Recent (warn using TW) addition
Any chance of losing this label on the diff page following a rollback? I think it makes the talk page link too huge and obnoxious, and possibly exaggerates the need to warn the user RIGHT NOW. (In my opinion, checking out the user's other contribs and a quick check of the article's history should usually take priority over warning). --Bongwarrior (talk) 21:02, 26 May 2012 (UTC)
- It was added to emphasise that Twinkle will pick up the name of the rollbacked article when you click the "(talk)" link and then use Twinkle to warn the user. New feature request - Add talk section without warning
One of the great features of Twinkle is that when you revert, the article name is pre-populated when you give a warning. However, sometimes you want to talk to the editor about the revert without using a templated warning. It'd be nice if there was an option in Twinkle that would just add a new section with the header being a link to the article and the contents being whatever you put in the non-optional message edit box. --NeilN talk to me 05:10, 2 June 2012 (UTC)

Help with morebits, please...
So I forked the WP:SIMPLEVOTE script, since nobody seems to be doing anything with it. But I am very, very far from a .js guy, so I'm way out of my element fixing it now that it borked. I updated it to pull MediaWiki:Gadget-morebits.js, but there's still something wrong. When I've got it included, it breaks Twinkle with the following error when I try to use Twinkle:
Uncaught TypeError: Object #<Object> has no method 'userIsInGroup' load.php:308 twinklespeedyCallback load.php:308 twinkleUserAuthorized load.php:82 jQuery.event.dispatch load.php:49 jQuery.event.add.elemData.handle.eventHandle load.php:42
Also, when I run my SimpleVote script, it does work, but the pop-up includes the following:
This user script is using the deprecated "Wikipedia.wiki" class to edit the wiki. It may cease to function in the near future. Please pass this message on to the script's maintainer, to ensure the script is upgraded. (The developers of Twinkle are happy to assist script maintainers with updating scripts.)
Simplevote does, indeed, call "Wikipedia.wiki" as so:
var wikipedia_wiki = new Wikipedia.wiki( 'Grabbing vote page for article ' + form.link.value.split('/',2)[1], query, Simplevote.afd.voteon.callbacks.main );

Hi, I have recently setup a twinkle CSD log. I have tagged several articles before but they don't appear in there, only 1 article which I tagged the other day. How can I get them in there? See User:Chip123456/CSD log --Chip123456 (talk) 17:30, 3 June 2012 (UTC)
- Only articles which you tag from now on will appear in the log. It is, after all, a "log", not a "history", and it only starts recording when you turn it on. — This, that, and the other (talk) 05:50, 4 June 2012 (UTC)
Possible glitch?
There was an issue with twinkle not reverting to the version selected at Baburam Bhattarai. This edit was supposed to revert to this diff (and the edit summary provided by Twinkle suggested that it did so), but instead only undid the very last edit, not the last two as intended. I don't know if this is something that was caused by Twinkle, or if maybe I did something wrong? - SudoGhost 23:25, 3 June 2012 (UTC)
- You could have gone to the wanted diff and simply clicked [[restore this edit]] above it rather than reverting it as reverts and undoes can only take care of the prev diff.--Ankit MaityTalkContribs 06:17, 4 June 2012 (UTC)
- I think that is what SudoGhost did.
- As far as the problem, I don't know what caused it. I'd say it was not your fault: sometimes Twinkle, or the wiki server, can get confused. Were you by any chance looking at a "reverse" diff (with the older revision on the right)? — This, that, and the other (talk) 07:12, 4 June 2012 (UTC)
- @Ankit That's exactly what I did, I clicked "restore this edit" on the diff shown above. The issue is that it didn't do the intended action. I didn't hit "undo", that (1) wouldn't be a Twinkle issue, and (2) wouldn't give a Twinkle edit summary, especially a Twinkle edit summary saying it restored to a version that it didn't. @Thisthat, no, I just clicked the intended diff (with the newer revision on the right) and clicked "restore this edit". - SudoGhost 17:59, 6 June 2012 (UTC)
Incorrectly transcluding?
I just created an AfD using Twinkle, and Snotbot made this edit, followed immediately by this edit. But this edit shows that Twinkle actually overwrote itself, by replacing my transclusion with another. I'm not sure if this is a Twinkle bug or just an edit conflict, or what, exactly. —Torchiest talkedits 17:41, 6 June 2012 (UTC)
- If you set the correct timestamp format in your preferences, you'll see that this edit and this edit were just three seconds apart. This is the same thing that happens when one user tries to do multiple AfDs at once with Twinkle, except that here it was two different users starting an AfD at the same time. AFAIK, there's nothing that can be done because of the way Twinkle edits. TTO, any other comments? jcgoble3 (talk) 22:03, 6 June 2012 (UTC)

multiple history merges
I found an article which was multiple times splitted and copy and pasted to another place. Why am I not allowed to tag the article with multiple history merges requests? mabdul 14:26, 3 May 2012 (UTC)
- Twinkle doesn't have very good history merge functionality at the moment. For some reason, history merge tagging is done using the CSD (speedy deletion) module, which doesn't make a lot of sense. I don't have much experience with history merges; how would you like Twinkle's functionality in this area to work? — This, that, and the other (talk) 09:38, 7 May 2012 (UTC)
- Tagging for non administrators is not bad actually. The problem with history merges is, that "easy merges" (clear copy and paste moves) are correctly tagged, but prevent the "tagger" to tag a page with multiple history merges. (which happens really seldom, but a few days ago I found an article which was moved two times by a user by copy and paste.)
- I would like to see (at least) a possibility to place multiple {{db-historymerge}} on a page.
- For more complex merges, I normally ask User:Anthony Appleyard at Wikipedia:Cut and paste move repair holding pen. Maybe ping him if more complex task should get added by TW at this page. (I have no opinion on that) mabdul 09:51, 7 May 2012 (UTC)

Eliminating redundancy?
Is it possible to configure or change Twinkle so that it would look to see if a template has already been added? Fir example, in this edit on 11 June, ImageTaggingBot warned that a file needed a license. On 15 June, with this edit, another editor used Twinkle to add the identical warning. We beat up on new editors enough without compounding it with multiple warnings for exactly the same issue. How best can we avoid this?--SPhilbrick(Talk) 14:51, 16 June 2012 (UTC)
Adding reason for {{Uw-username}}
Could an option to add a reason for {{Uw-username}}
be added? Right now, if you warn a user with that, a large box appears under the warning saying:
The notifier has not provided a reason why this username may not meet Wikipedia's username policy. Incorrect notifications must be removed. If you know that your username does not violate our policy, please remove the message and leave a note on the notifier's talk page.
Because I don't want that message, I usually just warn the user manually. However, it would be easier with Twinkle. David1217 22:34, 4 June 2012 (UTC)
- See previous report here. Just put the reason in the field labeled "optional message" and hit submit and it will work properly (even though it breaks in the preview). jcgoble3 (talk) 01:56, 5 June 2012 (UTC)

Db-notice-multiple
I have just finished tweaking {{db-notice-multiple}} so that it can give messages about individual speedy deletion criteria. So now you can use something like {{subst:db-notice-multiple|SomeArticle|G4|A7}}
, and it gives explanations of CSD G4 and A7 on the creator's user talk page. (Have a look at the template page for the new documentation I wrote.) Would it be possible to modify Twinkle to add the parameters to the template when someone tags a page using multiple CSD criteria? Best — Mr. Stradivarius (have a chat) 15:34, 7 June 2012 (UTC)
- Ping! Any updates on whether this would be possible to implement in the near future? This would be really useful to have for new page patrol, as at the moment if you tag a page with multiple criteria using Twinkle it just leaves a generic notification, and the users are left to check the deleted page and then visit WP:CSD to find out why their pages were deleted. Leaving custom notifications would be easier on new users, and would allow NPPers to spend less time explaining things. If no-one wants to update it, just let me know - all it means is that I'll have to learn how to program in JavaScript. ;) — Mr. Stradivarius (have a chat) 15:36, 11 June 2012 (UTC)

uw-ewsoft, a softer wording of the edit warring template was created as a result of this discussion, and there's a consensus at Wikipedia talk:Template messages/User talk namespace (per this discussion) to redirect Template:uw-3rr to Template:uw-ew. Can uw-3rr be removed from Twinkle so that it can be redirected, and uw-ewsoft added? Thank you. - SudoGhost 23:24, 14 June 2012 (UTC)
- Sounds like a good idea. Would it be reasonable to place {{uw-ewsoft}} in the "single-issue notices" category? — This, that, and the other (talk) 11:06, 15 June 2012 (UTC)
- I disagree with putting it under notices. A quick look through the list of notices shows that most are just meant to inform users of something, and by and large, they mostly don't carry the risk of being blocked. Whether it's "softer" or not, this is clearly a warning that clearly indicates that a block may result if the offending action does not cease. Therefore, it belongs under single-issue warnings. From two other perspectives, the newbies receiving the message most likely won't know what category it's listed under (thus putting it under "warnings" instead of "notices" does not create WP:BITE issues), and Twinkle users used to going straight for the single-issue warnings category might not know it exists unless they see uw-ew and uw-ewsoft listed next to each other. For all three of those reasons, I believe it belongs under single-issue warnings instead of notices. jcgoble3 (talk) 18:21, 15 June 2012 (UTC)

Request to change ARV popup
Hi. I'm wondering if a change can be made to the data in the ARV feature. In the WP:UAA menu for reporting problematic usernames, the (?) popup next to the promotional username option states, 'Promotional usernames are advertisements for a company or group.' Often at UAA there are a huge number of reports that are declined as non-blockable violations [1] because the user has not edited promotionally, which is the current consensus for dealing with such names at WP:U. Most UAA reports come from Twinkle. Can that popup be modified to better inform Twinkle users about this information? Something along the lines of 'Promotional usernames are advertisements for a company, organization, website, product, or group. Do not report these names to UAA unless the user has also made promotional edits related to the name'. The relevant instructions on the matter are at WP:ORGNAME and WP:UAAI#Promotional_usernames. NTox · talk 07:14, 19 June 2012 (UTC)
- Thank you for alerting us to this. I personally have never used the ARV module, since I don't typically deal with new editors, and I rely on the feedback of others to help maintain it.
- I feel the tooltip you suggest is a little too long. How about

Disable batch functions?
I'm an admin, but I have never had occasion so far to use any of the various "batch" functions of Twinkle. I would prefer not to have the "batch" tabs appear at all, so I can avoid accidentally invoking these functions until such time (if ever) as I have a need for them. Is there any configuration option available to accomplish this? If not, I'd like to request that one be added. — Richwales 00:40, 22 June 2012 (UTC)

Five pillars
Can this template (Template:Five pillars) be included in Twinkle? It is a graphic-along-with-text kind of representation for the five pillars of Wikipedia. Dipankan (Have a chat?) 07:22, 24 June 2012 (UTC)
- I see you just created it. I personally don't think it is very useful, as it would only serve to overwhelm new users. The regular welcome templates often contain a link to the five pillars, and these welcome templates tend to be much friendlier in terms of welcoming new users. So, to answer your question, no. — This, that, and the other (talk) 09:45, 24 June 2012 (UTC)

Welcome question
Is there a way to customize what header Twinkle adds to templates that don't have a header? If this isn't already implemented, it might be a good idea. --Nathan2055talk - contribs 19:57, 26 June 2012 (UTC)
- That preference was removed because it was only relevant to about five templates. What really should be done is that the header should be included in those templates which lack it ({{welcome student}}, {{welcome teacher}}, {{welcome-menu}}, {{welcome-graphical}}, and {{welcome-screen}}), so Twinkle no longer has to add it. (In some of those cases perhaps Twinkle shouldn't even be adding a header at all.)
- You might think I'm mad to reduce the degree to which a user can customise Twinkle, but I am of the view that consistency is important when dealing with our newest users, and any changes to standard headers should be made with consensus (or by BOLDly editing the template). — This, that, and the other (talk) 01:41, 27 June 2012 (UTC)
- I would be bold and add section headers, but I can't code templates for squat. Perhaps someone at the welcoming committee can help out. David1217 02:51, 28 June 2012 (UTC)
Twinkle warning the wrong users?
Is there some problem with twinkle warning the wrong people? Three times in the last 24 hours I've received warnings about crimes I didn't commit. First off, I speedied Sir William Burrough School which was incoherent chat style. The warning ended up on my page. The actual creator removed the speedy template. Another user then speedied it again, with the warning ending up on my page even though I wasn't the creator. Finally today, I moved Omar esa to Omar Esa per WP:MOSTITLE. Another user then speedied the page, with the warning again ending up on my page. What is causing this? Valenciano (talk) 11:07, 30 June 2012 (UTC)
- As you can see, you technically are the creator in this case. Something similar might have happened in the other case. — This, that, and the other (talk) 12:03, 30 June 2012 (UTC)
- But in that case I wasn't the creator. Another editor created the page, under that title. I then moved it. I've no idea why I'm showing up as first contributor? To repeat, that wasn't a new redirect that I created, it was an existing page which I turned into a redirect. Valenciano (talk) 12:42, 30 June 2012 (UTC)

Behaviour for uw-username
Did this get broken for some reason? The on-page warning still behaves the same way, but the edit comment Twinkle leaves treats the note as a link, which makes no sense at all as far as I can work out. --Fæ (talk) 14:12, 29 June 2012 (UTC)
- Can you provide a diff showing the problem? I know this warning was recently "fixed" to better show where the reason why the username may be against policy should be entered in the dialog box. That may have something to do with this. jcgoble3 (talk) 15:24, 29 June 2012 (UTC)

I'm finding that when I use Twinkle to e.g. tag new pages for speedy deletion they are not being marked as patrolled. Is this intentional now, or just not working? And if not working, is it just for me? RichardOSmith (talk) 19:45, 2 July 2012 (UTC)

Database issue
Every time I try to perform a revert or leave a template message with Twinkle today I get this error message:
A database error has occurred. We apologise for any inconvenience this might have caused. The most likely cause of this problem is a search or other operation that took too long. Possible reasons include:
- A search where all words are in quotes. Try searching without the quotes initially or add a few more words outside the quotes to restrict the search;
- An exceptionally large personal watchlist (probably over 10,000 items); or
- Exceptionally heavy load on the database servers.

I'm not running a search and my watchlist is under 1,000 items, so I'm guessing it's a server issue. Anyone know if this is likely to be a continuing problem? Yunshui 雲水 13:28, 5 July 2012 (UTC)

Adding WP:COIN to TB Noticeboard notification
I'm not sure how easy this is to add but as a regular at WP:COIN, being able to use Twinkle to notify editors of discussions at COIN would be very helpful. - Sorry for the late reply, I've been on vacation. COIN requires that anyone reported be notified of the discussion and the notification was added makes it much easier for people to notify involved parties (similar to ANI). Twinkle already has templates for informing editors of COI guidelines and the only other thing I regularly do is ask users if they have a conflict of interest which I think is best done with a personal message instead of a template (I don't even think one exists).
- In short, mission accomplished. Thanks for taking care of it TTO! OlYeller21Talktome 15:58, 8 July 2012 (UTC)

Stub tags
Could there possibly be support for {{stub}} added to the tagging feature? It's really annoying to have to tag articles and then manually add stub tags. Thanks, Nathan2055talk - contribs 21:38, 28 June 2012 (UTC)
- I don't think I'd support this. {{stub}} should rarely be used. Instead, a more specific stub template should be placed. Adding the generic stub template to the tagging feature will reduce the number of specific stub templates placed in my opinion. It has already been determined that there are too many various stub templates for Twinkle to try to handle them all. Maybe you can make a comment at village pump (technical) about having something similar to HotCat created that can perform stub tagging. Ryan Vesey Review me! 21:49, 28 June 2012 (UTC)
- Actually, I don't think it is such a bad idea. I often add {{stub}} to articles, and leave the actual stub sorting to someone who specialises in stub templates. (Perhaps lazy, but the area of stub templates is rather complex...) — This, that, and the other (talk) 07:25, 30 June 2012 (UTC)

Some problems with reporting users
It seems like every time I report a user for being a sockpuppet or sockpuppeteer, I get "Failure to retrieve token", or along those lines. Also, when the sockpuppet investigation subpage does load, the {{checkuser}} template is also missing a username. -- Luke (Talk) 18:15, 7 July 2012 (UTC)
- I don't see the problem; I made a test nomination and everything appeared to work correctly. Could you provide a diff of an instance when something went wrong, and explain exactly what should have happened? — This, that, and the other (talk) 02:48, 8 July 2012 (UTC)
- Facepalm . I only entered one username into the "sockpuppet" field, not two. That's why it appeared with no username. My mistake. -- Luke (Talk) 03:06, 8 July 2012 (UTC)
Infoboxes
Could Twinkle add a feature to add a few basic infoboxes, such as {{Infobox person}}
, {{Infobox settlement}}
, {{Infobox company}}
and possibly others? A basic description of each infobox field could be shown. This would make adding them much easier. David1217 What I've done 23:59, 5 July 2012 (UTC)
- I think the WMF's visual editor scheme has this as a long-term goal, so in order to avoid duplication of effort we might wait for their implementation. (It might take a while, of course...) — This, that, and the other (talk) 02:34, 8 July 2012 (UTC)

- You see, I was trying to pass the buck off to WMF because it would take a while to code something like this. I wouldn't be surprised if there is another user script out there that offers this functionality. If not, though, I will have to decline this suggestion since I just don't have time to write fancy new stuff at the moment. - Wookieepedia has done this for quite a while. See our MediaWiki:Common.js (do a Ctrl+F search for "jQuery version of fillPreloads" to see the code) and the list it pulls from. You can try it out by looking for the dropdown box labeled "Standard preloads:" on the edit screen. Essentially, a /preload subpage of each template is created with the exact code to be preloaded and nothing else, the JS then adds that to the edit box at the cursor when selected. Grunny could explain in more detail how it works (though he's on vacation at the moment). As it would require a separate /preload subpage for each template, it might be something best implemented on a sitewide basis with the list in the MediaWiki namespace (and I would support that). jcgoble3 (talk) 19:55, 8 July 2012 (UTC)

- It wouldn't need a change in MediaWiki itself, just some code in MediaWiki:Common.js and a /preload subpage for each template to be included. The community could implement it locally without needing to involve the developers. jcgoble3 (talk) 13:24, 11 July 2012 (UTC)

When you nominate a template, you get this warning:
Stub types and userboxes are not eligible for TfD. Stub types go to WP:SFD, and userboxes go to MfD.
Can someone please remove the references to SFD, since it was recently closed as historical? I believe stub types now go to CFD, so that should be mentioned somewhere too. Ten Pound Hammer • (What did I screw up now?) 01:47, 7 July 2012 (UTC)

CSD problems
I would like to propose that we remove two of the options from the CSD menu. First, "Custom rationale (custom deletion reason)" is just asking for trouble (and I've had to undo much of it). This options allows (encourages?) editors to just make up their own CSD reason, which clearly violates policy. Especially when using an automated tool, we should require patrollers to actually select one of the approved CSD reasons.
To the same end, we should remove the generic A7 option: "A7: Unremarkable people, groups, companies, web content, and individual animals". We already have options for each of those categories, which 1) increases transparency by making it explicit which subject matter is being claimed and 2) discourages patrollers from tagging inappropriate subject matter (like films or software) with A7. -- Selket Talk 18:02, 16 July 2012 (UTC)
- I support this proposal. Also, could we make it so that you have to hit "Submit" before the CSD template is applied? Several times, I've accidentally clicked the wrong CSD for some reason, and then had to clean up the resulting mess. David1217 What I've done 18:08, 16 July 2012 (UTC)
- I think all three are great ideas. Callanecc (talk • contribs) talkback (etc) template appreciated. 08:27, 17 July 2012 (UTC)
- I support removing the generic A7, but I an opposed to removing generic {{db}}. I added it last year, in order to give greater flexibility for CSD taggers to provide explanations alongside the criteria. For example, "CSD G2/G6/A7 - article with no assertion of importance, in template space" or "CSD P1/A10 - copy of article Red pepper in portal space" or "CSD G8 - documentation page for redirected template", etc. So there are plenty of situations where it is useful. n my occasional monitoring of CAT:CSD, I don't tend to see much abuse of it... some, maybe, but not as much as I had initially feared.
- Re the CSD auto-submit, I fear backlash from trigger-happy NPPs if I change this! Also, I rather like the current functionality myself... so without wider support I am hesitant to change it. — This, that, and the other (talk) 09:57, 17 July 2012 (UTC)
- I see where your coming from with the custom rationale but what about including a comment option (ie tick the box if you wish to add a comment) that way you can still easily and quickly write a comment, but it won't just allow a custom rationale which doesn't meet the CSD criteria.
- Regarding the submit button it only takes an extra second or two to hit the button and would also allow for an easier input of multiple criteria (tick the boxes which apply). Plus limit the chance of an incorrect nomination. Callanecc (talk • contribs) talkback (etc) template appreciated. 10:20, 17 July 2012 (UTC)
- I would consider including a "comment" option... if only the CSD tag templates supported it! — This, that, and the other (talk) 04:54, 18 July 2012 (UTC)
- The whole point of CSD is that you cannot make up your own reasons. If the article doesn't fit one the the specific defined criteria it needs to go to AfD (which in TW has a box where you can type in your reasons). -- Selket Talk 16:06, 17 July 2012 (UTC)
- I too would strongly prefer having to hit "submit" after selecting the criteria. The current system is prone to accidental misclicks that require two reverts to fix - one to the article and potentially one to the creator's talk page. And if you just accidentally tagged a newbie's article as G3 or G10 instead of A7, you might have very well scared off a potential contributor with the resulting warning on their talk page (can you say WP:BITE?). Also, support removal of the generic A7, and no opinion on the removal of {{db}}. jcgoble3 (talk) 01:11, 18 July 2012 (UTC)
- Generic A7 is going away soon (although it will stay around for db-multiple). And I will soon add a Twinkle preference for the submission style: the default will be to have a "submit" button like all the other modules, and users will be able to individually revert to the current style if they want. — This, that, and the other (talk) 04:54, 18 July 2012 (UTC)

How to add a WikiProject template into Twinkle default options
How can Template:Welcome-Pakistan be added into the "WikiProject welcomes" options on Twinkle? I've seen several other project templates on Twinkle and would appreciate if this could be incorporated. Currently, we use Wikipedia:WikiProject Pakistan/Outreach/Welcome manually to welcome new users to WP:PAK but enabling a welcoming template on Twinkle would be very convenient. Orphan articles
When tagging an article the Twinkle definition of an orphan is "article is linked to from few or no other articles". This seems poorly worded to me; an article that has 2 or 3 (counts as a few by my standards) links to it is not an orphaned article by the criteria at WP:O - Basement12 (T.C) 01:15, 20 July 2012 (UTC)

Change to CSD behavior
The default behavior of the CSD module has been changed, per popular request in #CSD problems above. By default, Twinkle will now no longer go ahead and tag the page as soon as you click one of the "options"; this was non-standard and unexpected behavior. Those users who do not customise their Twinkle preferences will have to click the "Submit Query" button to acknowledge their choice and set the process going.
For those users who prefer the old behavior (me included!), you can go to your Twinkle preferences and change the "When to go ahead and tag/delete the page" setting just beneath the heading "Speedy deletion". Don't forget to click "Save changes" at the bottom once done!

Welcome and Autobiography
A user was welcomed with twinkle [2] where it was noted that "the page you created about yourself has been or will shortly be speedily deleted from Wikipedia..." (Originally noted at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Articles for creation/2013 6#Autobiography Welcome) The article was at AfC Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Rangsiman Doherty, and was not CSD tagged. (Note that WP:AB suggests that such an article may be speedily deleted under WP:NOT, but WP:NOTCSD states the opposite. I have taken discussion of this conflict to VPP at Wikipedia:Village pump (policy)#Autobiographies and CSD - Conflict.) Could this discrepancy between welcome text and Twinkle activity be easily resolved? --Nouniquenames (talk) 03:24, 27 July 2012 (UTC)

Category:Non-English welcome messages
Could the templates in Category:Non-English welcome messages be added to Twinkle? These are a bit fiddly to use at present, since you have to find the language code from List of Wikipedias, then look in the category to see if a specific template exists or use {{Welcomeen-en|language code}} if not. It would be very neat to have another radio button on the "Welcome" tab, with a drop-down list of language names to choose from. -- John of Reading (talk) 10:54, 29 July 2012 (UTC)
- They're already there; select "Non-English welcomes" from the drop-down list at the top of the Welcome dialog. That said, Twinkle has 17 such templates and the category has 19 (not counting the universal {{Welcomeen-en}} one), so it may be worth adding the two missing ones ({{Welcomeen-fa}} and {{Welcomeen-ro}}). While someone's in there, the order of {{Welcomeen-mr}} and {{Welcomeen-ml}} should be switched for proper alphabetization (Malayalam comes before Marathi). jcgoble3 (talk) 17:38, 29 July 2012 (UTC)
- Hmm, I didn't spot those. So I only need to detour into List of Wikipedias if the language is an unusual one. Probably not worth the extra programming effort. -- John of Reading (talk) 18:06, 29 July 2012 (UTC)
Issue with local preferences, CSD logging appears to be buggy
Hi. Just a quick note to let you know that there appears to be something wrong with Twinkle's CSD logging function - a few hours ago, I placed a CSD tag on Old coptic language, and duly Twinkle logged it, or so I thought. But instead of actually logging the entry, it completely removed every single CSD I'd logged for the whole of July. It's done this to me before, back in early June. I don't know what it is doing, or why, but I'd like it to be fixed if possible. The revision it messed up is here (I have subsequently reverted this, by the way). Thanks for looking at this. BarkingFish 01:15, 31 July 2012 (UTC)
- We hear about this issue from time to time; however Twinkle can't do much about it – it's some sort of transmission error, either between the user's computer and the server, or between the different servers running Wikipedia. The only solution at the moment, unfortunately, is to revert the edit manually. — This, that, and the other (talk) 10:32, 31 July 2012 (UTC)

Edit Mishap!
In a recent edit I added refimprove tag using Twinkle, later I found it chopped off entire article. I did not go to edit mode to use Twinkle. Here is the edit diff. I am little bit worried, I have revised my recent 500 contributions, no more similar mishaps! This was completely unintentional! Any suggestion please? --Tito Dutta ✉ 04:07, 2 August 2012 (UTC)
- I'm not sure if this is related to the use of Firefox, but I frequently see trustworthy editors accidentally chopping off the entire lower page like this, without even being aware that anything went wrong. Firefox is often the one thing these users have in common, and it's what I assumed happened here. -- WikHead (talk) 04:20, 2 August 2012 (UTC)

- The good thing is that I know you did not do that on purpose. Over the past year and a half or so, I have fixed many pages like this. Not all were Twinkle users, but 99.9% of them were using Firefox. I'm currently using Chrome myself, and don't believe I've ever had this happen to me personally. -- WikHead (talk) 04:31, 2 August 2012 (UTC)
- I've managed to do it too, and I'm not using Firefox (Safari 5.1.7). My (untrustworthy) guess it that sometimes the page stops loading mid-edit, which causes the bottom of the page not appear in the edit screen. When the page is saved, the saved version doesn't have the bottom of the page. David1217 What I've done 04:46, 2 August 2012 (UTC)

UAA reporting requests
Hi, folks. Many weeks ago you were kind enough to change the text of one of the tooltips for UAA reporting which seems to have helped the noticeboard. I wonder if a couple of other changes might be made to help us out. If you take a look at the page, you will notice that Twinkle always files reports at the top of the noticeboard - above all other reports - rather than at the bottom, like at AIV et al. I wonder if it is possible to re-code the tool to post these at the bottom. Many administrators work from the top of the noticeboard first (perhaps because intuition tells them to), which means the older reports are often dealt with last, and the newest ones first. In my second request, I wonder if Twinkle can post an empty line of space between reports so that all of the reports do not get so mixed up in the source code. It is often necessary to comment on or remove particular reports from the edit window and locating them quickly in the big block of text can be difficult. And I may as well ask, while you are already there (!): can you change the text of the report's reason from "Violation of username policy as a [X} username", to "Violation of the username policy as a [X] username". For the grammarians in us. Let me know. NTox · talk 04:23, 8 August 2012 (UTC)
- Re positioning of requests, WP:UAA says nothing about whether to place new reports at the top or the bottom. Is there some sort of discussion on this?
- Re empty line of space, yes, it can be done. The grammar fix can be done too. — This, that, and the other (talk) 01:54, 12 August 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks for looking into it. No official documentation on the positioning issue; just seems to be more intuitive is all, since that is how all other noticeboards like AIV seem to work. New stuff is put after the old stuff (just like this discussion). NTox · talk 02:06, 12 August 2012 (UTC)
- The reason I ask is, if manual reports are being placed on top while Twinkle adds to the bottom, it turns into a bit of a mess. Perhaps there needs to be an instruction, which could perhaps be boldly added, as to whether to add new reports at the top or bottom. — This, that, and the other (talk) 09:49, 12 August 2012 (UTC)
- Well, since probably about 85% of reports currently come from Twinkle, I hesitate to add an instruction for either side . . really, I don't think admins care either way whether things are placed on the top or bottom. The reason I brought it up, however, is because most of time when manual reports are indeed added, they're placed on the bottom, which can make things confusing - and because many admins seem to deal with reports from top to bottom, which means that with 85% of reports being posted at the top, the old ones are dealt with last. As said, though, this really isn't a big deal so I'll let you make the decision. NTox · talk 15:39, 12 August 2012 (UTC)
- I've noticed the same thing at WP:RPP. Twinkle adds reports from the top, and admins patrol from the top, so the oldest reports are last. However, the RPP instructions specifically state to add reports at the top, so maybe that should be changed. David1217 What I've done 15:45, 12 August 2012 (UTC)

Request Page Moves
Hi, Does Twinkle have the ability to request page moves please? Thanks --JetBlast (talk) 21:06, 12 August 2012 (UTC)
- It should have, I've always wanted it. — This, that, and the other (talk) 22:34, 12 August 2012 (UTC)
- It sort of depends on whether a replacement for User:RM bot is approved. The bot copied the move request from the talk page to the central page, so only one edit was needed. It would still be nice if Twinkle could do it, though. David1217 What I've done 22:50, 12 August 2012 (UTC)
Was there a change to wording of twinkle warnings?
I regularly use twinkle notices to warn IPs about vandalism, a few days ago the message for a level one warning for vandalism stated:
"Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is invited to contribute, at least one of your recent edits did not appear to be constructive and has been reverted or removed. Please use the sandbox for any test edits you would like to make, and read the welcome page to learn more about contributing constructively to this encyclopedia. Thank you."
But now it is saying..
Hello, I'm BritishWatcher. I wanted to let you know that I undid one of your recent contributions because it didn’t appear constructive. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thanks!
Is there a reason this has changed, or is it a bug or is there a way to alter the message to change it back to the previous version? I think the original wording was far better, inviting people to look at the welcome page and sandbox, rather than encouraging people to leave a message on the senders talk page. Hope someone can help thankyou BritishWatcher (talk) 22:33, 30 July 2012 (UTC)
- Twinkle uses the standard templates created by WikiProject User Warnings, and that set has been updated per the consensus at Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Level one user warnings. The changes were recommended because of several months of data from a subproject for testing new warnings. Steven Walling (WMF) • talk 22:50, 30 July 2012 (UTC)
- Thank you for the link, ill have a read through as i missed that discussion. But i shall certainly have to use it less. Not only does it encourage IPs to head to the persons talkpage to potentially cause trouble, but it no longer provides helpful information like a link to the sandbox and welcome page. I see from a brief look through the general trend of the change is to make it more "friendly", but i do not see why that could not still include links to the relevant pages, rather than directing everyone to the persons talkpage. Anyway thank you and will read more now. BritishWatcher (talk) 23:01, 30 July 2012 (UTC)
- That leaves the user open to abuse and would make me not bother with level 1 warnings. Its far too friendly and if a user has made blatant vandalism and needs a warning of any level previous advice is far more accurate than any i could give them. I.e pointing them to the same places. Seems like all this has done is leave users wide open and not helped the situation at all.Blethering Scot 23:05, 30 July 2012 (UTC)
- We're all already open to abuse on a wiki. The question is, does giving a talk page link increase abuse? We tracked this during testing, both through overall quantitative measurement and handchecking editing by all the vandals that were warned during the tests (something like 4,000 in total). For both the previous warnings and the new versions, less than 1% of vandals went and attacked the warning user anywhere. In addition, more good faith editors had questions and comments about the revert when we gave them the new warnings. There is no danger of greater retaliation, and we need to do a better job of AGF -- IPs included. The reason the links to the Sandbox and welcome page were removed is because more links = more distractions. When you just focus on the one problem and the relevant policy or reason for the revert, people pay more attention to what you were trying to communicate. Steven Walling (WMF) • talk 23:09, 30 July 2012 (UTC)
- So you are putting the emphasis on over worked editors to explain things that were already available to said user in the previous template. That is putting more work on already over stretched editors, and yes it leaves us open to more abuse and doing a job twice that would of been already done in one go. Its about time the WMF focused on content not making warning templates that are given mostly to vandals appear more friendly. If the users edit had been in any way constructive then they would be more likely to be given a standard welcome template and a note. I.e. not a your edit is un constructive this isnt helping assume good faith in any way. Well it will be interesting to see use of that template drop and people using the higher and sterner template, sometimes being friendly doesn't work and when it does use proper welcome templates not Hello, I'm Blethering Scot and yes come to my talk page for me to tell you what you already would have none if the template hadnt been changed and at the same time have a go whilst you are here. Ill not be using that template any more as its no longer useful. Blethering Scot 23:22, 30 July 2012 (UTC)
- Me and the WMF are not emphasizing anything at this point. It's not "our" choice about what to emphasize in the community. We helped with the testing and I'm doing the work of updating the templates, but the only reason it's going forward is because of a month-long Request for Comment where people talked about and worked on the proposed templates. If there wasn't consensus for the changes, nothing would be happening. As for whether you want to use the template or not: that's your decision, and the fact that people could skip to level two if a user clearly deserved a stern warning was a factor in why many supported the change to the templates. Steven Walling (WMF) • talk 23:29, 30 July 2012 (UTC)
- Also how widely was this advertised because this affects far more editors than took part in that discussion, was a watchlist notification put out. And when was this switched on exactly for something like this to work it needs a big support because people are likely to just not use it if they disagree with the change. Its utter nonsense to be honest and another RFC is likely because this is a wide ranging issue affecting very large number of users that this RFC did not reach. Editors should not be put under more pressure, WIKI is about content and actually improving the encyclopaedia therefore providing advice to editors who vandalise straight away is more likely to help preserve that content rather than them ignore and end up getting further warnings with the advice they should of been given in the first place. Blethering Scot 23:34, 30 July 2012 (UTC)
- It was on WP:CENT, the Village Pump, the talk page of WikiProject User Warnings, the talk page of CVU, the talk page of Recent changes patrol, and other places. Steven Walling (WMF) • talk 23:36, 30 July 2012 (UTC)
- So a watch list notification to the average users that don't frequent such place was not given. Therefore the majority of editors this affects were in fact not invited to discuss. Big scale changes should be advertised globally to attract a level of discussion that can clearly be described as consensus. Small level discussion does not show that the consensus of the whole community only a small part of it. How many users use wikipedia and Twinkle to deliver such messages, how many of said users took part in discussion i.e what percentage of consensus does that show. How many users are known to have these pages on their watch lists and frequent them enough. Well need to see how this plays out but not good and disappointing that we have another case of this happening with tests and projects that the WMF are involved with. Most projects don't affect all users for instance Article Feedback or New Page Triage only effeect users who wish to take part, but when they do affect all users of something its important that its is done properly. Blethering Scot 23:48, 30 July 2012 (UTC)
- Except, well, this doesn't effect all users; it effects new users, who wouldn't be able to participate properly in an RfC editors, and twinkle users. I agree that community input and decision-making in this field is important, and I completely support Maryana and Steven's efforts to include people in their RfC. And, quite frankly, if that RfC had not been representative, we'd see a lot of people complaining about the change. The fact that there are only two people taking issue perhaps indicates that the community at large is comfortable with the alterations - either because they're supportive, or because they don't mind. Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 23:54, 30 July 2012 (UTC)
- I would add that more than 50 people commented on this RFC in the 30 days it was open, not counting anyone from the WMF. I think it's wrong to second guess that just because you didn't like the outcome. Steven Walling (WMF) • talk 23:57, 30 July 2012 (UTC)
- Or they haven't noticed yet. It does not affect just new users it effects established users who give the messages who are now open to double the work explaining material that was already explained and inviting them to the talk page of said user, i get enough abuse as it is. 50 people thats hardly the community is it.Blethering Scot 23:59, 30 July 2012 (UTC)
- You have chosen not to answer how that represents the community or why it wasn't globally advertised when that is easily available to you to do so.Blethering Scot 00:01, 31 July 2012 (UTC)
- Yeah, I did. Globally advertising a discussion is what the RfC listings, WP:CENT, and the Village Pump are made for. It literally says that on them. Steven Walling (WMF) • talk 00:07, 31 July 2012 (UTC)
- Not really worth carrying on this discussion will see how it plays out good or bad and seeing as your still making the changes now well see soon enough. However i asked above if had been globally notified via the watch list and so far you haven't said it was or if not explained why it wasn't. Issues that affect the whole community usually are and its easily available to you.Blethering Scot 00:13, 31 July 2012 (UTC)

Right, it's not a Twinkle issue. But since the recent UW Level 1 rewordings removed the 3rd-party use case of Level 1 warning after another editor reverted but didn't warn, I recommend that all editors consider it a bug, and route around it by starting with Level 2 warning. No problem. --Lexein (talk) 02:13, 17 August 2012 (UTC)

Someone has an issue with reverts being marked as minor
As seen in a threat at my talk page, User:Zepppep doesn't like that Twinkle's marking the reverts as minor edits. Quoth Zeppep, some admins/editors have settings in place to ignore minor edits but reverts or vandalism is something you'd definitely want to make sure was brought to their attention. When I suggested the user take up the matter with the developers of Twinkle and Rollback, the user asked me to bring the matter to the developers' attention. So this is me doing that. PCHS-NJROTC (Messages) 01:48, 17 August 2012 (UTC)
- Reverting vandalism is a minor edit; it's specifically mentioned under "When to mark an edit as a minor edit" at Help:Minor edit. This doesn't seem to be an issue for Twinkle at all; Twinkle is marking vandalism as minor, as intended per the help page. - SudoGhost 01:53, 17 August 2012 (UTC)

RfC on linking to attack pages
I have just started an RfC on whether we should link to attack pages from user talk pages when issuing speedy deletion notifications. Batch deletion not working
I have been unable to delete files and pages using the batch deletion option for the past two days. The list loads up fine, but when I hit the Submit Query button, Twinkle blanks out and doesn't perform any deletions. Any idea what's up? — ξxplicit 00:32, 18 August 2012 (UTC)

Whitespace on CSD welcome
I noticed a problem that's very minor, but that someone might like to look in to when they have the time. When a new user's page gets tagged with a speedy deletion notification template, by default a {{first article}} welcome notice is automatically added to the top of the page. This happens because of the way {{db-notice}} is coded. However, if the notification template is added using Twinkle, two blank lines are appended at the very top of the talk page before the welcome message (for example, on this page). I imagine that this is because adding two line breaks is very useful if there is already other content on the page, and the code isn't clever enough to check if the page exists or not before it adds them. Would anyone like to check if my guess is correct, and if so, change the code so that the newlines are not added if the page is new? Thanks — Mr. Stradivarius (have a chat) 11:51, 8 August 2012 (UTC)
- This bothers me too. I'll try to make a quick fix and then investigate the problem more closely later. If only one blank line is used before the template, the problem evaporates, but it them becomes more difficult to distinguish messages when editing the talk page. — This, that, and the other (talk) 09:43, 9 August 2012 (UTC)
- The original issue is resolved, but the second one which I brought up is now a problem. I fear this may be an unavoidable deficiency in MediaWiki. — This, that, and the other (talk) 10:18, 18 August 2012 (UTC)
Twinkle message for F9
I notice that the Twinkle template for an F9 (example includes wording: " If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you." This makes no sense. If it is a copyvio, no admin (at least none paying attention) is going to userfy the image. How do we fix this?--SPhilbrick(Talk) 17:29, 15 August 2012 (UTC)
- Well of course, images can't be userfied in the first place. But that's beside the point. I really don't know what's happening here; I'll try to sleuth it out. — This, that, and the other (talk) 07:43, 16 August 2012 (UTC)

I am an AFC reviewer and I use the ORPHAN template frequently. In about 2 out of 5 instances, the author of the article puts hyperlinks into the article as opposed to a wikilink.
For example, they will change: ((The Dallas Cowboys played a game.)) to ((The Dallas Cowboys played a game.)) as opposed to ((The Dallas Cowboys played a game.))
With this in mind, can the word "Wikipedia articles" replace the ambiguous "articles" in the template? I know that there are 'four help links in the box; I believe that the emphatic boldface type draws attention for most newbies and they skip the rest. Cheers! - Wrong forum, see Template talk:Orphan. Although isn't this actually wikifying? Keφr (talk) 07:31, 19 August 2012 (UTC)
Report options
Like many editors, I deal with plenty of vandals, and Twinkle helps me bag/tag their edits very quickly. That said, I would like the ability to route problem reports to the most appropriate venue. For outright vandals, it should indeed go to AIV. However, if dealing with an edit-warrior or 3RR violation, is there any way we can add reporting to WP:AN3 instead? I agree the form work for edit-warring is much more complex, but if it can be done for SPI, I think it could be done for AN3 as well. --McDoobAU93 23:33, 20 August 2012 (UTC)
Hi, we've updated the syntax for this template so that instead of typing
{{Multiple issues|unreferenced=July 2012|context=May 2012}}
you can type the following
{{Multiple issues| {{Unreferenced|date=July 2012}} {{Context|date=May 2012}} }}
In other words, the usual templates are put inside {{Multiple issues}} and will then produce the same output.
This article has multiple issues. Please help improve it or discuss these issues on the talk page. (Learn how and when to remove these messages)

Will this affect Twinkle at all? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 14:34, 10 July 2012 (UTC)
- Sorry that this is unrelated, but seeing it in my watchlist made me think. Can Twinkle be modified to not put {{Wikify}} into {{Multiple issues}} or {{Article issues}}? The problem is that when it is put into one of those templates, it doesn't prompt for a reason. Ryan Vesey Review me! 14:37, 10 July 2012 (UTC)
- If that is important it would be better to solve the problem by adjusting Template:Wikify so that it does show the reason, not by trying to stop people putting {{wikify}} inside {{multiple issues}}. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 15:59, 10 July 2012 (UTC)
- I'm confused on two points: the documentation for {{multiple issues}} shows example invocations of {{article issues}}, which is confusing. Which name should be used? Additionally, the bullets in the template show up as Monobook-style square bullets, even for those using Vector.
- I'm assuming the old syntax still works? I'll get around to updating it soon if this new syntax is here to stay. — This, that, and the other (talk) 01:17, 11 July 2012 (UTC)
- I think that since {{Article issues}} redirects to {{multiple issues}} that the coding in Twinkle should be {{multiple issues}}. The documentation for that template ought to be modified. —Compdude123 03:13, 11 July 2012 (UTC)

- I just tried the 'TW -> Tag' function on a page that already has {{multiple issues}} here and, even with a tag that doesn't need additional parameters to specify a reason ({{plot}}) the new tag gets top-posted stand-alone instead of included with the existing multiple issues. I'm only seeing this if I'm trying to add to a page that already has {{multiple issues}}; if there are no existing clean-up tags then adding multiple tags in one go with TW does group the multiple issues properly. K7L (talk) 16:15, 4 August 2012 (UTC)
- This is known. I would like to fix this but I don't have time right now. It's on my to-do list. Should be easier with the new multiple-issues syntax. — This, that, and the other (talk) 11:19, 5 August 2012 (UTC)

Article maintenance tagging
{{uncategorized}} is tagged into the bottom of the page, right? Twinkle does that, but the tag is placed even after metadata (cats, interws). Please fix this. Thanks, --weltforce (talk) 10:44, 18 August 2012 (UTC)
- That's in the too-hard basket at the moment. Sorry. — This, that, and the other (talk) 11:40, 18 August 2012 (UTC)
- Why not "stealing" code parts or HC which does handling the adding/modifying of cats correctly? The detection code is mostly identical. ;-) mabdul 12:07, 24 August 2012 (UTC)
- Yeah, actually I was a bit hasty to say "too hard". It's probably a matter of using a regex like this one (don't worry if you don't get this):
pageText.replace(/((\s*(\[\^\+\]\]|\{\{[^\}]+\-stub\}\})\s*)+)$/, "\n\n{{uncategorized|date=XXX}}$1");

Requesting Revision Deletion or Oversight
Would it be possible to make a feature that allows non-admins to request Rev-Deletion or Oversight and allows admins and oversighters to RevDel and Oversight diffs? Electric Catfish 19:00, 19 August 2012 (UTC)
- RevDel is requested via IRC or admins' talk pages/email, and Oversight is email only. Doesn't seem like something Twinkle would really be able to handle. David1217 What I've done 19:26, 19 August 2012 (UTC)
- Uhm why not automatically send an email through the Mediawiki feature? No disclosure of any stuff and easily reporting stuff. mabdul 12:01, 24 August 2012 (UTC)
'Also delete all redirects'
One of the options available to me as an administrator when I use Twinkle for speedy deletion is 'Also delete all redirects', which is checked by default. Is it possible to have this unchecked by default? Malcolmxl5 (talk) 22:59, 21 August 2012 (UTC)
- Oh my, that does sound rather bad. In 99% of cases, redirects should be preserved. Sven Manguard Wha? 09:22, 23 August 2012 (UTC)
- Redirects to the deleted page? I'd say they will almost always qualify for WP:CSD#G8 (except if you will immediately re-create a page with that name via move, undelete, or creation)). Amalthea 13:25, 23 August 2012 (UTC)
- Yes, that's right. I was thinking of a situation where one might do a lot of moves or history merges that need a temporary deletion or some such. It is easy to forget to uncheck the option (and nuke the redirects) and it would be handy to enable it to default to unchecked in such circumstances. Malcolmxl5 (talk) 21:01, 23 August 2012 (UTC)
- I will add it to WP:TWPREFS soon. — This, that, and the other (talk) 07:31, 24 August 2012 (UTC)

Feature request: quick tag search
Please add a filter-as-you-type box into the tagging helper. Pressing Esc should clear the filter. Keφr (talk) 16:01, 4 August 2012 (UTC)
- Would it search the tag names only, or the help-text as well?
- (It is a bit difficult to re-purpose Esc, since you will observe that Esc is currently a shortcut for closing Twinkle dialog boxes.) — This, that, and the other (talk) 00:36, 5 August 2012 (UTC)
- Preferably both names and help text. As for Esc, good point. I guess Ctrl+Backspace is not much harder to press. Keφr (talk) 16:43, 12 August 2012 (UTC)
- How is it going? Is this going anywhere? If you don't mind me asking. Keφr (talk) 10:15, 27 August 2012 (UTC)
- Sorry... I've been thinking about it, and not a lot more. All I can say is, don't hold your breath waiting for it.

Summary limit
While my understanding of Java is definitely lacking, I do seem to recall from my teenage programming days that there is a parameter to determine the character length of a textbox. Would it be possible to set a max character length in the twinkle rollback popup? I commonly find myself going over and leaving edit summaries that are incomplete/unintelligible. Sorry if this has been discussed before. Sædontalk 23:55, 21 August 2012 (UTC)
- I would like to do this, but it is not possible to set a maximum length on browser-native prompt dialogs. — This, that, and the other (talk) 02:26, 22 August 2012 (UTC)
- Interesting, thanks for the info. Alternatively, would it be possible to have a text counter that decreases as you type? Sædontalk 03:29, 22 August 2012 (UTC)
- Even that is not feasible. Browser-native prompts are extremely limited. For instance, the only way to control the width is by padding out the end of the prompt text with spaces. And that only works on Firefox: Chrome's and Internet Explorer's prompt boxes are fixed-size. What's worse, IE's box hasn't changed since IE 5 (believe me - I had to use it, back in the day!) This should show you how primitive they are. — This, that, and the other (talk) 09:18, 23 August 2012 (UTC)
- Wow ok, well thanks for explaining that to me. I haven't programmed anything since I was a teenager and didn't realize these limitations existed on modern browsers. Sædontalk 00:16, 27 August 2012 (UTC)
