GeSI - how to ensure the page is correct - it's not meant as promotion

Hello, I'm afraid I made a mistake putting up a page for GeSI (GeSI (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)). I'm not sure what went wrong, but there is a big message stating it is spam or only promotes a commercial entity. GeSI is a not for profit organization that I am friends with and they asked me to help create a page for them. The organization promotes sustainability in the ICT industry and works with many big firms in this field (I suspect my list of those companies was the problem). I removed this list until I better understand how to add them. GeSI partners with many UN agencies that have wikipedia pages, and they are a not-for-profit organization. I'm concerned for GeSI because the page now seems horrible for them, and for myself as I am not trying to promote anything commercial and I don't want to develop a bad reputation on wikipedia. The only other page I've ever created caused no problems (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Numéro_deux)

The purpose of the organisation is irrelevant, what is relevant is the notability of the organisation, supported by reliable sources, and the tone of the article. In this case the article doesn't demonstrate the notability of the subject nor is the tone article encyclopedic.--ukexpat (talk) 21:00, 2 August 2012 (UTC)
The article has now been deleted, so don't worry any more that you have inadvertently harmed the organisation in question. Take a look at WP:COI, and particularly WP:LUC, for an explanation of the potential pitfalls in creating an article about a subject you're close to, and the reasons why this is discouraged here. If you've read the notability guideline Ukexpat linked to above, and feel that an article could be written that satisfies it, you could always write a draft and assemble the relevant references in a user sandbox, then list it at Wikipedia:Articles for creation for someone else to turn it into a compliant article. - Karenjc 16:04, 3 August 2012 (UTC)

i submitted articles about mcgarrybowen and have trying to remove my contributions so that they cannot be read. I ubderstand there is something called a rollback. If you can roll back what I have done I would greatly appreciate it. Im not trying to vandalize the page I just want the history to rrmain as it was before my submissions, they began on 8/2 and have been having trouble elimininating them. After comparing the recent editions to the article with those on 6 May 2012: here, it doesn't appear as though there are any significant changes outstanding. Photo to wiki page

I created a page about a shortline railroad. I uploaded a photo to Commons. I have tried to follow the instructions, but am having a problem figuring out how to get it to my shortline railroad page. WP:IMAGE#How to place an image has a quick overview and then lots of details if you want them. However, I see that the image itself, commons:File:Cadiz Alco S3 No 8.jpg, is tagged for deletion there due to a problem with the licensing or authorship information. Please clarify the situation there (need to state what the license status is, and supply evidence that "Kameron Miller", the author you listed, agrees with that). Licensing policy can be a bit confusing, so feel free to tell us what you do know about the image and someone can help you figure out how to proceed from there. People do become friends here, online and offline, during the process of building and improving the encyclopaedia, and you're welcome to join in and help, but if you're looking for features like friend lists and chat forums, you will probably do better on a different site. Can I get a mentor?

I have recently set up an account, and tried to make my first submission on the Gallery for Apollo 7. When I went to the IRC site to get help, I could not enter any text, so went nowhere.

Background. I am 81 years old, retired documentary producer living in New Zealand.

I would like some of my films, which are now on You Tube, to be accessible through Wikipedia. Other priorities mean that I don't have the time or enthusiasm for conquering your website without help.

Can anyone assist me one-to-one?

Good morning! I am brand new. I just got my login a week ago and have created a new article in my "sandbox." I've saved the article, but still can't see it "live" on Wikipedia when I log out. I'm guessing it takes time for the article to be viewed and approved, right? How long will this take and how will I be notified of it's approval/deletion? I'm flying a bit blind here and wondering if it's been deleted and I just don't know it, so I'm wondering how I can find this out. I know the article is "viable," but fear I may not complete my markup absolutely correctly or cite my references correctly, etc. I appreciate any help you can offer this sad little newbie.  :) Clara Bale (talk) 19:03, 7 August 2012 (UTC)

There is no formal review process for sandbox drafts unless you submit them via the articles for creation process. I took a quick look at the draft and it needs a few more references from third party sources, ie sources not connected with the subject, to demonstrate notability per the guidelines. Creating a Wikipedia article about the company I work for

I work for a 42 year old nonprofit company that has literally "written the book" on Leadership Development. The company is even referenced on the Wikipedia page for Leadership Development, as well as several other pages, but it currently does not have its own page. The company has made history through extensive research and radical innovation that has changed the way many businesses look at their organizational and leadership development and education, which is one of the reasons that I believe it is noteworthy enough to have a Wikipedia page. However, now that I have read Wikipedia's guidelines, I understand that I need an unaffiliated third party editor to write the article. How do I go about finding one of these editors? Frankly, the promotional tone of your inquiry is enough to set off alarms all over Wikipedia. Articles here must be written in a neutral, matter-of-fact tone, sourced to reliable sources. There is no place here for language like "has literally 'written the book' on..."; "extensive research and radical innovation"; or "changed the way many businesses look at...". Such phraseology belongs on your website or in your sales pamphlets, not in a reference work. --Orange Mike | Talk 20:40, 7 August 2012 (UTC)
Thank you for your quick response. I appreciate your honesty and candor. However, I only used the term "wrote the book" because our faculty and researchers literally do write books and have made an impact on business history. I would not suggest that the article itself be promotional in nature, just the facts to be able to reference when referring to the company. This would be why I would want someone unaffiliated to write it. There are plenty of sources that could be used as references, as the company is consistently in the top rankings of credible institutions and publications. New York Beacon Newspaper

The New York Beacon is an African Amercian weekly newspaper established in 1976. It is published by Smith Haj Group Inc., a New York corporation. The company also publishes the Philadelphia Observer, a weekly African American newspaper serving the greater Philadelphia PA communities. Walter Smith is the publisher of the New York Beacon and Miatta Smith is the publisher of the Philadelphia Observer. The New York Beacon was established in 1975 by W.E. Underwood as a daily numeroloyg sheet called "Big Red". The "Big Red" numerology sheet had daily sales of over 200,000. In 1976 the sheet was expanded to a 4 page tabloid to accomodate requests for advertising from community organizations. In 1978 the 4 page tabloid became a 24 page newspaper to accomodate retailers request for advertising space in and around new york city. The daily numeroloyg sheet was included in the weekly newspaper thereby establishing "Big Red News" as the highest circulated African American weekly newspaper in the country. Walter Smith, the newspaper's current owner, publisher and editor in chief, took over management of "Big Red News" in 1980 and purchased it in 1982. In 1990 it was renamed the "New York Beacon". The New York Beacon is audited by VAC and is a member of the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) and the Northeast Publishers Association (NEPA). How do i add the profile pic in an article...?

  • If you want to upload an image from your computer for use in an article, you must determine the proper license of the image (or whether it is in the public domain). If you know the image is public domain or copyrighted but under a suitable free-license, upload it to the Wikimedia Commons instead of here, so that all projects have access to the image (sign up). If you are unsure of the licensing status, see the file upload wizard for more information. Please also read Wikipedia's image use policy.
  • If you want to add an image that has already been uploaded to Wikipedia or Wikimedia Commons, add [[File:File name.jpg|thumb|Caption text.]] to the area of the article where you want the image to appear – replacing File name.jpg with the actual file name of the image, and Caption text with a short description of the image. But it is often the case that articles about living people do not have pictures because there are no pictures available which are not restricted by copyright. Unless a Wikipedia editor can go and take their own picture of the person and then release it under a suitable licence, there may not be any way to get one. --ColinFine (talk) 19:41, 9 August 2012 (UTC)

Article declined

Why has my article been declined twice on grounds of not having enough sources?! Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/David Wayman I have cited independent sources for all information and the article is entirely objective. What happens if someone creates an article before me?

I'm not sure that would be the best way of dealing with it - unless there's something delete-worthy about the article that gets created in mainspace first. If only Masterpeace3 has made significant edits to the draft in Articles for Creation, then if someone else creates the mainspace entry first, it would be best for Masterpeace3 to update the mainspace article with the additional material from his draft, and then ask for the draft to be deleted. --Demiurge1000 (talk) 09:33, 10 August 2012 (UTC)

The Vaccines' genre

The Vaccines are currently one of the biggest bands in the UK and their genre is still described as 'indie rock', which is not true as they are not an independent band. Their frontman, Justin Young, and other music sites, such as www.musicrooms.net and NME, have said that this is the case. I changed the information on the article last night and now it has been changed back, I don't know how to cite the sources so if you could change and cite it for me that would be very nice and helpful. An indie game in development will almost never be an acceptable topic for a Wikipedia article. Please see Wikipedia:Notability. I am the author of the Medal of Honor that was presented to Charles L. Gilliland

I was the Company Clerk of Company "I", 7th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Division when our Company Commander ordered me to investigate the circumstances around the extraordinary bravery exhibited by Charles L.Gilliland and to write him up for the Congressional Medal of Honor. I did so, but did not find out until 50 years later that it had in fact been awarded. He was the youngest person in military history (17 years old) to be awarded that medal. French influence in Puerto Rico

Please assist with the following. I was looking at sites covering Puerto Rican history and came across French surnames found on the island. I have a particular interest in that my wife is a fifth-generation member of the Lausell family. According to family members, two brothers visited the island from France in the 1880's. One brother settled in Puerto Rico, while the other brother eventually settled in Santo Domingo. I have attempted to find a specific area of your site to request that Lausell can be added to the large list of French surnames on the island. Can you help? Questionable claim about a writer

Greetings. On another forum, someone started a thread about a book. She was worried that the book would be biased, because the wikipedia page claimed that one of the authors was "derisive" against the same subculture that the book is about.

I have no idea if the author was derisive or not. I'm quite certain the book was not, although a decade has passed since I last read that book so I might misremember. Anyway, I don't think the quote provided on his wikipedia page support the claim that he was derisive. The quote is ripped out of context, and at least as likely to have a very different meaning than being derisive.

Posting here to get general input on this kind of situation. I'm very new to wikipedia, in the sense that I have done very few edits. Registered years ago, but so far I have only started one minor page and made a few minor edits on other pages. Still learning the system for communicating on this site.

In one sentence of the page, two statements are made about the author. That he has a certain preference, and that he is derisive against those who doesn't share it. The first claim is uncontroversial and relevant, but not supported at all by the quote. The second claim is controversial since it calls the quality of his work into question. This second claim could potentially be supported by the quote: The quote, ripped out of context as it is, could mean many different things. Interpreting it as derisive is only one of many possibilities. I'm thinking, maybe keep the first statement, add a "citation needed" to it, and remove the second statement as well as the quote.--Xzenu (talk) 11:20, 13 August 2012 (UTC)

This forum seem to be a great place to ask questions about the English Wikipedia.

But where do i ask similar questions about the Swedish wikipedia? Surely sv.wikipedia.org has a similar page? But I can't find it. Just for your info, it wasn't the system that pasted the welcome template on your talk page, but a real en.wikipedia user - see Wikipedia:Welcoming committee. As far as navigation goes, categories can be helpful. For example, if you look at the bottom of this page you'll find that it's in Category:Wikipedia help forums. Following that link will lead you to the various other help pages on this Wikipedia. The same trick will work on the page PrimeHunter has linked you to on the Swedish Wikipedia. Some sort of tool for minimizing sections?

Hi, out of curiosity I've been trying to peruse old Arbitration cases, but I've found that many of them seem so long and complicated that getting the sense of them is very difficult and needs lots and lots of scrolling up and down. I know with programming, like with Microsoft Visual C++, that you can collapse and hide subsections, and I was wondering if there's any sort of tool to do the same thing with long and complicated pages here on Wikipedia? There are templates that you can add to a section to collapse it, but the standard user interface has no way of doing it at the whim of the user. There may be gadgets to do it, I don't know. The Wikipedia iPhone app collapses sections by default. --ColinFine (talk) 22:38, 14 August 2012 (UTC)

I love you guys, have donated and am trying to fit into what you're doing and the way you're doing it. It's just that I couldn't REPLY to Doniago and Barumbo (sp?). I have thousands of documents and photos that my father, the late Herbert Mols, left the family (mainly me) after his death in 1986. I have been spurred (sp?) on by the flurry of articles written recently about the controversal 1972 Gold medal men's basketball game between the US and the USSR. My father wrote the Appeal and it has been misquoted often. That's why I finally put the full appeal up on the www.herbmols.com website.

Am I not autoconfirmed?

I am having a problem editing an article. When I hit preview, I get the version of the article BEFORE my edits were made, my edits are removed from the edit box, and there is a pink message at the top of the screen stating:

I thought autoconfirmed users were automatic when your account was 4 days old and had 10 edits. My account is from 2008 and I have 42+ edits.

It would say "view source", not edit, if you could not edit the page. There would be no edit box, no preview, no save page button. So yes, you're autoconfirmed. Does this happen on all semi-protected pages, or only some? Does it happen on some pages that are not semi'd? What browser are you using, and which version, and on which operating system? However, your draft article is a long way from being acceptable as a Wikipedia article in its current form. Your references need to show that the organisation is "notable" by Wikipedia standards - the organisation must have attracted considerable coverage in reliable sources such as newspapers and respected news websites. I guess you refer to Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/High Noon Western Americana. You removed the submission template in [1] and never readded it so the page was never submitted for a new review. I have readded the old submission template. Don't remove it. If [2] was an attempt to submit it for a new review then you made two mistakes: You didn't place it on the page Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/High Noon Western Americana, and you included the <tt> and <nowiki> stuff seen in the source code for the instructions at User talk:HighNoon#Your submission at Articles for creation. You should only have placed the displayed text {{subst:submit}}. The nowiki in the source code is needed there to display the text to you without making a real submission of the page the instruction is placed on. If you had only made the first mistake then a reviewer would probably have guessed you just placed it on the wrong page, but the second mistake meant that no reviewers were alerted that you attempted to submit a page. Hi there and welcome to Wikipedia! :) Just on my own reading of your proposed article, it's much more thorough than the stub, so my first thought is that you should (since there is no talk page for the article) just put your changes in section by section after you have carefully reviewed them once more by yourself. You need to avoid close paraphrasing in some of your history timeline, and also respect NPOV - for instance where you have "the suburb is in a state of gross neglect", this may well be true, but you need to have a specific reliable source that you can cite. And you should read WP:CITE in general and provide footnotes in the text for your statements - and again, make sure you're not copy-pasting other people's writing - but from my reading, you've done a lot of work, so be bold and add it to the live article.
And if you want some focused review, we have WikiProjects and it looks like this one would be a good place to find interested editors. Hope that helps! Franamax (talk) 03:18, 22 August 2012 (UTC)

Requesting a primary source to backup a statement made on Wikipedia

This Wiki Page: Kōsō Abe (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) Makes the following statement:

"...However, Abe was advised by central military authorities in Tokyo that the new official policy was to execute all prisoners of war in the field, and not to hold any in captivity or to send them to the home islands."

It gives no verifiable reference for this particular statement. At the end of the paragraph it gives a footnote, but having checked the footnote references, nothing refers specifically to the above statement and certainly; as well that footnote provides no clue as to where this statements primary source is (The references in the footnote offer nothing on this statement.)

This statement if true has ramifications in another sphere of The Pacific War in WW2, where 22 Europeans were murdered by beheading the previous day (to the event being discussed in the wiki-page above.) The question has been what precipitated this massacre of the previous day? Hence the importance of this statement and the need for a verifiable primary source. Is there anyway that you or I can contact the writer to discuss this point and seek a verifiable primary source?

Because of you potential conflict of interest, you should be cautious in making changes yourself, and in general should suggest changes you would like made on the article's talk page. However, if there is information in the article which is not cited to a reliable source, anybody may remove it.
It is more problematic when you want to add information to the article: if you can find a published indepedent reliable source, then the information may be added; but matter from your personal knowledge - or anybody else's - is not acceptable on Wikipedia, because it is not verifiable. Most difficult of all to handle is if there is information which is cited to a reliable source, which you would like to have removed from the article: in that case you may not remove it, but should discuss the matter on the talk page, and try to persuade others that there are reasons why this material should not be in the article. --ColinFine (talk) 12:20, 22 August 2012 (UTC)

Sea of Japan

Hello. I am a Korean student living in Seoul, South Korea. I tried to find the manager's e-mail address, but I couldn't find it. So, I just decided to write this here. I want to make an apology first, because my English isn't that good. A few days ago, I was researching about Dokdo and East Sea, and I found a horrible mistake in this website. The description was titled 'Sea of Japan', instead of 'East Sea'. You may know that 'East Sea' is considered to be a territorial dispute-but it is a certain territory of South Korea. And it made me a bit angry that there is a shade of meaning that Korea is claiming it to be its sea-not Japan. It is Japan that is claiming that it is theirs, and Korea is actually the owner of the sea. Well, I guess the mistake wasn't on purpose. It may have been in this way for many years, for there are lots of WRONG websites and maps that are saying 'Sea of Japan', not'East Sea'. I am writing this complaint because Wikipedia is a well-known global website and many people around the world can get wrong information. I wish this to be modified as soon as possible.

I am somewhat surprised that it was declined. While the sourcing is all pretty much primary in nature, the guy is a professor at Cambridge University. Unlike US universities, professorial appointments at UK universities are given only to the top level of academics. Editing a page for a Client - Reference

How do you reference a wiki page section if the information you are adding comes directly from the person that the page is about? For example if the wikipage is about John Doe and John Doe gives me information to update for him. Any suggestions on how to reference the entire section?

I've edited User:Liberia9 so that the picture is now showing. However, I noticed that File:Michel Okai.jpg lacks the source and licensing information that Wikipedia requires. We need to know who owns the copyright (probably the photographer who took the picture), and what rights the photographer is willing to give up for the picture to be used here. My new contribution: disambiguation, and uploading a photo

Today I submitted a new contribution which is a new article on John Frawley the astrologer.

(1) There needs to be a disambiguation page created. There are two existing articles for other people called John Frawley: John Frawley and John Frawley (actor).

(2) I would like to upload a photograph of John Frawley for this page. I believe I need special permission for this? I also will need some instruction.

I'd have to say so far that the how-to blurb for beginners is really heavily text intensive and difficult to find the way around. It could really do with better organisation - a simple top down menu thing, instead of having embedded links everywhere. But that is just a little feedback.

If your library meets the guideline for notability, then it may be the subject of an article in Wikipedia; but because of your conflict of interest you should not be the one to write it.
Your best bet is to find the multiple substantial references to the library in independent reliable sources without which it will not pass the criteria for notability, and list them in requesting the article at WP:RA. If you have a reliable source about the origin of Filippo Juvarra, you may certainly add it to the article. But it is not clear that information about the ultimate origin of his family, even if reliably supported, is relevant to the article. I am Ted Fetter's nephew, and have some minor corrections to offer in his Wikipedia writeup.

Ted was born in June 1906...not 1907..I can double check the exact date of his birth.

Doubts about the information provided

I have been checking the box office reports of expendables 2 but the reports depicted is weird saying it has grossed over 100 million in North America and almost 24.7 million in rest of the world and the gross total is about 300 million.

While I checked the actual stats and as per box office mojo it is only 52 million in North America.

I think you should add a few brief details about this to our article on Bovina, Mississippi, especially if you can find newspaper references to the event. In addition, since it's likely there is a considerable amount of newspaper coverage, it may be worth creating a separate article about the disaster itself. Editing of page (updating of picture)

Hi,

I have a Wikipedia account for many years, and am trying to update a page Dirk Kuyt. In the main picture, Dirk Kuyt is wearing a Liverpool shirt. However, he has already moved to Fenerbahce and scored 6 goals in the process.

May I know how we can edit this?

The best solution is to find a picture of him that is more up to date, and also freely licensed. If you're able to take a picture of him yourself, you could freely license it yourself.
Another solution might be to crop, or otherwise edit, the currently available free image such that it shows more of his head, and less of his shirt. Your derivative version of the free image would still be a free image. --Demiurge1000 (talk) 20:20, 29 August 2012 (UTC)

The references are in the body of the text itself - what we call "inline references". Edit the whole page (click on Edit right at the top of the page, not on the right) and look for things between <ref> and </ref>. --Demiurge1000 (talk) 20:32, 29 August 2012 (UTC)

Handy navigation tip when there are lots of inline references: when looking for a particular one, you can jump straight to it from the "References" or "Notes" section. Immediately after the reference number in that section you will see either a blue clickable caret sign (^) or a nonclickable caret sign followed by blue clickable lower case letters (a,b etc). Clicking on any of these will jump you straight up to where that specific reference sits in the text. You can then click on "edit" and change it. - Karenjc 18:58, 30 August 2012 (UTC)

Why am I not an "autoconfirmed" user?

You are indeed autoconfirmed and should be able to edit The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Were you logged in when you tried? Do you see an "Edit" tab or a "View source" tab? What happens when you click it? You should be seeing a red box starting "Note: This page has been semi-protected so that only autoconfirmed users can edit it." This is only a note and does not mean you cannot edit it. The normal edit box should be below the note. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:46, 30 August 2012 (UTC)

How to correct name of college?

The college's name is "Yuba College," and I frequently drive by and it is in a stone sign in front of the college. The top of the previous page correctly showed it as Yuba College. It is a community college but that is not in it's name. However, on your intro page, it shows Yuba Community College. It is in the Yuba Community College District. But it's name is Yuba College.
