To sign up for this event: Log in or create an account.

Join us for a Wikipedia edit-a-thon, where we will train participants to author and edit Wikipedia content, with a focus on adding and improving articles about Black artists who have worked with or are local to The New School’s community and are currently under-documented on Wikipedia. As the majority of Wikipedia editors are white and male, this is also an effort to create a space to train more editors of color and to ask white allies to spend time with us focusing on subjects that may lack coverage.

Please bring your laptop so you can join the editing and bring a friend! The more, the merrier! Snacks provided.

Event description

[edit]

The Black Lunch Table (BLT) project creates a space to encourage people of color and women to join the Wikimedia movement while also asking white male editors to focus on gaps in coverage on Wikimedia. Together we will create historical documents that respond to the urgent need for a reconstruction of the art historical record.

All are invited, with no specialized knowledge of the subject or Wikipedia editing experience required. A brief overview of the basics of Wikipedia editing will be given at the start of the edit-a-thon. In addition to the task list below, foundational texts to the thinking around BLT will be available to read and cite, some titles included below.

Weapons of Math Destruction, Cathy O'Neil

Algorithms of Oppression, Safiya Noble

Constituting an Archive, Stuart Hall

Archive Fever, Jacques Derrida

Archive and Aspiration, Arjun Appadurai

The Black Artist in America: A Symposium, Bearden, Gilliam, Hunt, Lawrence, Lloyd, Williams, Woodruff

About The Black Lunch Table

[edit]

The Black Lunch Table (BLT) is an ongoing collaboration founded by artists Jina Valentine (Fishantena (talk)) and Heather Hart (Heathart (talk)) which intends to fill holes in the documentation of contemporary art history. Since 2005 the BLT has taken a variety of forms relating to this most recent iteration, in the form of the Wikimedia project.

Our project creates a space to encourage people of color and women to join the Wikimedia movement while also asking white male editors to focus on gaps in coverage on Wikimedia. We mobilize the creation and improvement of a specific set of Wikimedia documents that pertain to the lives and works of Black artists. At each edit-a-thon we provide a list of suggested artists to add or edit, with particular focus on Black artists who have worked within or are local to the host institution’s community and are currently under-documented on Wikipedia.

More about BLT here.

About The New School and Centennial Festival

[edit]

A century ago, daring professors in New York City walked out on an imperfect model of education, inspiring today’s New School community of scholars, creators, and activists to make their mark on the world. We ask the questions that lead to new questions, challenging the status quo. Our only constant is innovation. As we begin our second century of groundbreaking scholarship, bold creativity, and world-changing ideas, we are 100 years new.

In celebrating The New School’s centennial, we’re opening our doors to communities here and around the world. Join us in exploring our legacy and learning how 1919 was the start of something new.

Suggested artist pages for revision and/or creation! This event-specific list focuses on important visual artists of the African Diaspora associated with The New School who are under-represented on Wikipedia. Please add a name if you know someone appropriate who needs a page or needs editing. Please do not add an artist who has a substantial page. We are trying to create new pages and beef up under-represented ones.

  • Etherpad: BlackLunchTable - List the article you're working on in this live doc to keep track and avoid duplicate work!

These articles are suggested, be sure they qualify according to Wikipedia's NOTABILITY guidlines before you create a new page. Thanks!
