I am trying to add a link to the name Maya Wiley from a page of people with that surname to an existing page for Maya Wiley. Mousing over the link shows a 'page does not exit' error, but it does.

On the Wiley disambiguation page there is a link to that same page that works. (Also, I created a sandbox link to Maya Wiley that works.)

Here's what I wrote which does not work, followed by the other reference that does.

  • Maya Wylie, (born 1964) American lawyer, professor, and civil rights activist

Maya Wiley, American civil rights activist and lawyer, 2021 mayoral candidate for New York City

I don't know why my link to Maya Wylie's page does not work. Cuchulain9 (talk) 02:03, 8 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Cuchulain9. Please check the spelling of the link you're trying to add because "Wylie" and "Wiley" are not spelt the same. -- Marchjuly (talk) 02:33, 8 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Well, that would explain a lot. I'm quite familiar with her and spelled it right in the sandbox as well, which explains why it worked there! Don't know the reason for the 'thinko'. Thx. Cuchulain9 (talk) 05:00, 8 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
"Thinko". Good one, I might steal that! David10244 (talk) 11:58, 10 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thinko was both an enwiki article and at wikt:thinko starting in 2005. The article was deleted via WP:PROD in 2007 and replaced by a redirect to typographical error. DMacks (talk) 12:14, 10 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
P.s. text review/copy editing was a significant component of work I used to do in environmental planning. I swear I was good at it; but perhaps it is good I retired :). Cuchulain9 (talk) 20:17, 8 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I created this page in Turkish Vikipedi. Can I carry it to the wikipedia Canada? DidemAkd (talk) 04:06, 8 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi DidemAkd. I don't think there's a Wikipedia Canada so perhaps you mean English Wikipedia. Articles existing on other language (non-English) Wikipedias can be translated into English for English Wikipedia as explained in Wikipedia:Translation, but you need to make sure that the subject of the article meets relevant Wikipedia policies and guidelines; in other words, an article exisiting on Turkish Wikipedia doesn't automatically mean the same article should also exist on English Wikipedia as explained here. -- Marchjuly (talk) 04:15, 8 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
And now the article doesn't exist on trwiki either (speedy-deleted as advertising). DMacks (talk) 12:17, 10 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Isaac Abarbanel page

[edit]

I tried 4 times to allow you to change a fact on this page. It says his grave is unknown. IT IS NOT UNKNOWN. In 2014 I visited it in the Jewish cemetery in Padua, Italy. I sent a photo. You make it impossible to change this one thing. My iPhone photo is not copyrighted. I gave full permission for you to use it. My Abarbanel relatives have tried to get me to change this page for years. I finally tried to. I now give up. This is ridiculous that it is so complicated. The photo clearly shows the graves. Abarbaneledit (talk) 05:24, 8 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The Isaac Abarbanel article is not very good (lacks sourcing), but if his grave is known according to modern historians, this will be noted in some sort of WP:RS, like scholarly literature (history books etc). So, what have you got? You saying "I have a picture of his grave I took" isn't good enough in the WP-context, see WP:ISAWIT. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 07:36, 8 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Abarbaneledit. There have likely been dozens or hundreds of people named Isaac Abarbanel throughout history, most of them completely obscure. How can anyone know for sure that your photo is of the grave of this specific Isaac Abarbanel? That is why we require a reference to a published reliable source. For example, my grandfather was named James Heaphy, my father was named James Heaphy, I am named James Heaphy and my son is named James Heaphy. And now that the internet has come along, I have learned that there are many other James Heaphys from New York to New Zealand and points in between. I know that there were two people with identical names working in very similar fields in the San Francisco Bay Area in the early 20th century, and that they died within a few days of each other. Even local journalists got confused. We need to be cautious. Cullen328 (talk) 08:01, 8 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
According to Encyclopaedia Judaica [1] his grave is unknown, but things may have happened since that was written. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 09:18, 8 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I'd say that the photo of the plaque clearly shows that the location of his remains is unknown:

I resti mortali sepolti nel cimitero di Borgomagno 1450-1529 qui furono translati nel 1955. E' tradizione che tra queste ossa riposino quelle di Don Itzchak Abrabanel e di Yehuda' Minz.

Per Google Translate:

The mortal remains buried in the Borgomagno cemetery 1450-1529 were translated here in 1955. It is a tradition that among these bones rest those of Don Itzchak Abrabanel and Yehuda' Minz.

So his remains may be buried there — we just don't know for certain. —Wasell(T) 🌻🇺🇦 09:44, 8 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, IP editor. If you truly believe that you are being "tricked", then do not log in. There is no official Wikipedia chat or text although there are unofficial forums on IRC and Facebook and maybe more places. But they have no impact on logging in. So. log in if you want to and do not log in if you don't want to. The choice is yours. We cannot function as your internet security expert, as we do not know your system configuration, your browsing history or your personal level of expertise. Good luck. Captcha

[edit]

How do I solve captchas? 10:41, 8 December 2022 (UTC)~South mall city10:41, 8 December 2022 (UTC)~~ — Preceding unsigned comment added by Southmallcity (talkcontribs)

@Southmallcity: Please see Special:Captcha. Specifically, it says "on Wikipedia you may be asked to fill in a CAPTCHA when adding new web links to a page, when you attempt to create an account, or when you enter your password incorrectly. Unfortunately, this may inconvenience users with limited vision or using text-based or speech-based browsers. At the moment we do not have an audio alternative available." — B. L. I. R. 10:44, 8 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Southmallcity:, can you explain in detail what difficulty you are finding? There is a common error (of clicking the wrong button) that some people make (including myself at one time), but this may be totally unrelated to your problem, so I won't elaborate at this point. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 90.213.188.15 (talk) 07:42, 9 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Rage of Rhino Bonus

[edit]

I had just started a bonus at 7,500 for 20 spins when the connection was lost. I was able to go right back in but I was not put back into the bonus. In fact it put me with very few coins. How do I get this back. I'm not connected to Face Book. Thank you Barbara Neal <redacted> 2001:5B0:2B48:1108:C09B:C224:4BA6:A0CC (talk) 10:50, 8 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

As it says at the top of this page, "The Wikipedia help desk is a place where you can ask questions about how to use or edit Wikipedia." If you are having problems with some other software or website, you need to ask there. - David Biddulph (talk) 10:54, 8 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@David Biddulph We don't get bonus spins on Wikipedia? So I have been wasting all this effort... David10244 (talk) 06:06, 9 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Scientific notation with the {Convert} template

[edit]

I want to use scientific notation on a large number where the {Convert} template is used to also convert the number to its value in alternative units.

Have looked at Help:Convert. Is not explained there. Only the suggestion that the |abbr=unit parm should be used when using scientific notation is mentioned there.

So where is the HELP for the Convert template to use scientific notation. I've not been able to find it. Cheers. N2e (talk) 13:47, 8 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Have you looked at Template:Convert#Scientific notation: 1.23 × 10−14? - David Biddulph (talk) 13:53, 8 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
But looking at that again & trying it out in my sandbox, it doesn't seem to do what it says. On a quick check it seems to be numbers >= 10e10 that get converted, not numbers >= 1000. You may wish to ask at Template talk:Convert. - David Biddulph (talk) 14:06, 8 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much for your help David Biddulph! No, I had not yet looked at Template:Convert#Scientific notation: 1.23 × 10−14. Did not know that page existed. Sounds like that link should definitely be added to the Help:Convert to help others in the future. N2e (talk) 15:46, 8 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
It's linked from the second word of the help page, where it says "Template {{convert}} is used ..." - David Biddulph (talk) 15:51, 8 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Time since last edit

[edit]

I am patrolling Special:NewPagesFeed (not as NPP). Often time I encounter a half-finished article and want to see time since the last edit to determine whether to move to draft, A1, etc. Is there a gadget to do this? Sungodtemple (talkcontribs) 19:41, 8 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Country name + flag for a 'country' without an ISO code

[edit]

For getting the name of a country plus its flag in front, you use th ISO thre-letter code in braces, e.g. {{USA}} ->  United States. But how about 'half-countries' without an ISO code? Question is motivated by Country_codes:_A #Alderney and some others in this overview. --KnightMove (talk) 19:55, 8 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

In what context would you be using this? --Jayron32 19:58, 8 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Also, I've never seen the use of flags in section headers; MOS:FLAG doesn't indicate that as an appropriate use. --Jayron32 20:01, 8 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Well, most of the headlines on most pages in this overview (e.g. Country codes: C) do that already. So it would be appropriate to change this to non-flag? --KnightMove (talk) 07:16, 9 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know what the best move is. You do what you want. I'm just saying I've never seen that before. --Jayron32 12:33, 9 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

CREATION OF NEW ARTICLE CHALLED CHAPLAIN NIELSEN

[edit]

Good morning!

We want more informations about how to create a new article concerning the real-life story of Professor Chaplain Nielsen from South America.

We are always available for any further details.

Hello. Please refrain from having multiple users under one account, it is against Wikipedia's policies. Also, if you have any conflict of interest, please declare that on your user page. Club On a Sub 20 (talk) 20:42, 8 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I'd start by reading Wikipedia:Notability (people). From a quick online search, I can't see any obvious evidence that Chaplain Nielsen has been the subject of the sort of significant coverage in independent published reliable sources necessary to meet our criteria. AndyTheGrump (talk) 20:43, 8 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Please note that trying to create an article before you have spent time learning how Wikipedia works and what its requirements are is often frustrating and miserable. We delete hundreds of articles and drafts a day, many of them by people who have started before they are ready. And if you are connected with the subject (so you have a conflict of interest) it is even harder, as you will need to forget everything you know about the person - and, especially, forget your opinions about them - and write based only on what the independent sources that you have found say about the person. Please read your first article, as well as about notability. ColinFine (talk) 22:05, 8 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Donation Begging

[edit]

I don't have any money. why does Wikipedia keep nagging me about donations? 184.13.109.126 (talk) 23:42, 8 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

If you create an account, you can disable the fundraising banners. For further questions etc please email donate(@)wikimedia.org. RudolfRed (talk) 00:03, 9 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia does not know the financial status of the person sitting at the computer/holding the device, or that the person has seen a donation request. Please create an accound and disable the banners in its preferences. 331dot (talk) 09:38, 9 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Welcome and thank you for your question about donations! To hide the fundraising banners, you can create an account and uncheck Preferences → Banners → Empty Fundraising. The Wikimedia Foundation does not track the identity of IP addresses, so it doesn't know your age, income level or whether you donated in the past.
None of the Wikipedia volunteer editors here who add and improve content in articles receive any financial benefit. We all simply contribute our time because we care about building a great encyclopedia for you and innumerable others around the world to use.
If you cannot afford it, no one wants you to donate. Wikipedia is not at risk of shutting down, and the Wikimedia Foundation, which hosts the Wikipedia platform and is asking for these donations, is richer than ever.
We are led to believe that users who allow cookies are less likely to see these banners on repeat visits (further information is available here), and you are welcome to communicate directly with the donor-relations team by emailing donate@wikimedia.org. Thank you! -- Verbarson  talkedits 13:37, 9 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
