Templates
[edit]Glacier infobox
[edit]At right is an example of the infobox that can be used for glacier articles. Further instructions on the usage of the infobox can be found at the infobox talk page.
Gannett Glacier (EXAMPLE) | |
---|---|
Type | Mountain glacier |

Coordinates | 43°11′48″N 109°39′02″W / 43.19667°N 109.65056°W |
Area | 3.63 km2 (900 acres) |
Terminus | Moraine |
Status | Retreating |
Helpful pointers:
- It is generally standard practice to have metric distances and areas in articles shown first with United States customary units second unless the article is about a glacier in the U.S. In scientific articles, metric is generally considered to be the standard and customary units are used only as a courtesy.
- Refer to the conversion templates to ensure all articles have both metric and imperial units. Generally, metric usage is sufficient in scientific articles. However to those unfamiliar with metric measurements, the conversion templates ensure both measurements are provided. Generally, a standard conversion template will appear as {{convert|1150|m|ft|abbr=on}} in the editing window, which allows as an example, 1150 meters to be converted to feet. The "abbr" is encoded to abbreviate both meters to "m" and feet to "ft" and this parameter can be removed from the template entirely when editing an article or type off instead of on to keep the full words. When saved, the example above appears as 1,150 m (3,770 ft) in the article. One can also use Google to make conversions by simply typing the distance or area and then to the conversion one wishes to make.
- Glaciers are sometimes more difficult to locate on a map than are mountains, so a query on a certain mountain known to be close the glacier may help narrow down the search.
Wikiproject messagebox
[edit]{{WikiProject Glaciers}} can be added near the top of talk pages. The template produces the following message:

Stub articles
[edit]{{Glaciology-stub}} can be added to the bottom of article pages related to this project. A stub is generally any article that doesn't have at least one reliable reference, two paragraphs of information and or lacks appropriate links to categories. Please add the stub template to the article page of articles which meet this criteria and as discussed at the stub guideline page.
All articles that are tagged as stubs automatically link to Category:Glaciology stubs.

Welcome to the assessment department of WikiProject Glaciers! This department focuses on assessing the quality of Wikipedia's Glacier articles. While much of the work is done in conjunction with the WP:1.0 program, the article ratings are also used within the project itself to aid in recognizing excellent contributions and identifying topics in need of further work.
