Title
Masterpieces of Russian Fiction

Description: This course is devoted to Russian literature of the 19th century. It was during the 19th century that a Russian national literature emerged, developed, and acquired that international reputation which has since given it a prominent place in world literary history. As we read some of the most celebrated works from the Golden Age of Russian literature – by Pushkin, Lermontov, Gogol, Turgenev, Goncharov, Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, and Chekhov – we will attempt to account for the distinct character of Russian literature and its unique role in Russian history and culture. The course is conducted in a seminar format with an emphasis on student research and discussion.

Level: Advanced undergraduate The Wikipedia project: Writing a Wikipedia article about a work of 19th century Russian literature Students will be working in groups of 3 to edit, or to create from scratch, a Wikipedia article devoted to one of the Russian literary works that we study in class. The goal of the project is to compose an article that will be of service to the general Wikipedia community. Students will be advised to use the standards of a “good article” per Wikipedia’s standards when editing an article (or preparing a new article) and, ideally, aim for the quality of a Wikipedia “featured article”. We plan to nominate all of the articles that we produce this term for Wikipedia “good articles” at the end of the term. Thus far, only 3 articles on Russian literature have earned “good article” status on Wikipedia and not a single article has received the “featured article” status. The ultimate aim of this project – ambitious yet worth reaching for – is to somewhat rectify this imbalance.

Other components of the project include an essay (about 3 pages) documenting the steps of the group’s work on their article; a peer review process; and, in-class presentation at the end of the term.

IP, please note that permissions cannot be given to an IP editor - do you have an account here with an adequate edit history? -- samtar whisper 16:34, 18 January 2016 (UTC)
Judging from the title, I think the username is Sidirk. The account was created around the same time. Given that the account does not have any edit history, I'm going to oppose this application. OhanaUnitedTalk page 20:11, 28 January 2016 (UTC)

  1. Why do you want to be a Wikipedia Ambassador?
Our generation has a very big responsibility of correctly and precisely replicating vast amounts of information available in physical books to it's equivalent digital copies. So that all the information is freely and easily available to everyone across the globe in just a click. Wikipedia is one big step in that direction and I want to an inseparable part of it.
  2. In three sentences or less, summarize your involvement with Wikimedia projects.
    YOUR ANSWER (OPTIONAL)
  3. Please indicate a few articles to which you have made significant content contributions. (e.g. DYK, GA, FA, major revisions/expansions/copyedits).
    YOUR ANSWER
  4. How have you been involved with welcoming and helping new users on Wikipedia?
    YOUR ANSWER (OPTIONAL)
  5. What do you see as the most important ways we could welcome newcomers or help new users become active contributors?
    YOUR ANSWER (OPTIONAL)
  6. Have you had major conflicts with other editors? Blocks or bans? Involvement in arbitration? Feel free to offer context, if necessary.
    No
  7. How often do you edit Wikipedia and check in on ongoing discussions? Will you be available regularly for at least two hours per week, in your role as a mentor?
I haven't started editing yet, but I would be absolutely available for at least two hours per week.
  8. How would you make sure your students were not violating copyright laws?
I would adopt a two step solution: Firstly I would expose them to infamous copyright infringement cases and make sure they understand the consequences of copyrights abuse. I would clarify and reaffirm the thin line between copyright and it's fair use. Secondly, I would randomly check their work for copyright infringements.
  9. If one of your students had an issue with copyright violation how would you resolve it?
First I would explain her the concepts of intellectual property and it's fair use then I would suggest to take appropriate permissions from the concerned authority before publishing the post.
  10. In your _own_ words describe what copyright violation is.
If a work is protected by a copyright law, it grants certain exclusive rights to it's creator or the copyright holder. Suppose if a third person wishes to modify/recreate/redistribute this piece of said work, he will have to take relevant permission from the copyright holder. If he doesn't take the required permissions, he is said to have violated copyright laws.

  • Sorry, but we have to automatically reject any application where the request is the user's first edit. The reason for this is that being an ambassador could require a good awareness of policy and guidelines, so we need to have an edit history to check for this. It might be a bit too soon for this, but feel free to check back in once you've had some more editing experience. We're in the process of revamping the ambassador program, so the program isn't entirely active at this point in time. Hopefully by the time you're more familiar, we'll have something awesome up and running! Tokyogirl79 (。◕‿◕。) 14:36, 1 February 2016 (UTC)

I'm going to oppose on the basis of "not now". While there are signs that this editor could become an ambassador in the future, it is still very much a work in progress. OhanaUnitedTalk page 20:23, 28 January 2016 (UTC)

Oppose. It's quite clear that you don't understand what you're applying for. You're applying for campus ambassador yet you said you don't belong in any education institutions nor wanting to work in campus. A more suitable role would have been online ambassador. But even that, almost all of your edits are towards sandbox and minimal history of editing in mainspace or communicating with others through talk pages. OhanaUnitedTalk page 20:33, 28 January 2016 (UTC)
Oppose. This is a bit too soon, since it looks like you've really only started editing recently. Being an ambassador requires that you have some familiarity with policy and guidelines in action, which I don't really think that you have just yet. Right now I think that your main goal should just be to edit and explore Wikipedia. Don't be in such a rush to collect hats - many of the things you're currently going for will still be here a few months or a year down the line! Tokyogirl79 (。◕‿◕。) 14:40, 1 February 2016 (UTC)
