Param Vir Chakra c/e

Hi Zawed, request a quick copyedit to the history section of Param Vir Chakra. Thanks in advance. Regards, Krishna Chaitanya Velaga (talk • mail) 09:07, 2 January 2018 (UTC)

Hi Krishna Chaitanya Velaga, I have done a bit of editing just now and will do some more over the next few days. One thing to check, please confirm that the VC was actually awarded to civilians under the command of the British Indian Army (as per the last sentence of the 1st paragraph of the History section). Cheers, Zawed (talk) 09:59, 2 January 2018 (UTC)
Yes. Regards, Krishna Chaitanya Velaga (talk • mail) 10:46, 2 January 2018 (UTC)
Hi Krishna, I have finished my CE, but please check my changes to make sure that they are supported by the references and are accurate. There is one paragraph, I wasn't able to properly CE; the one beginning "Post-independence,...", which is a little confusing. It states that the British honours and awards system in India informally came to an end but then later says India still has the option of these. Depending on what the actual situation is, I would rephrase to:

"Post-independence, although India had the option of retaining the existing British honours and awards system for recognising actions of gallantry, it chose not to do so. A short time later, Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru decided to give gallantry awards for the ongoing conflict in Jammu and Kashmir. Accordingly, new gallantry awards specific to military personnel of India were to be instituted."

Hope that helps. Cheers, Zawed (talk) 01:25, 8 January 2018 (UTC)

Duncan Cameron

Gday Zawed. I added a book to the article that had been used for a number of inline citations but seemed to be missing from the bibliography - please see here for my edit [1]. Could you please check I got it right and amend if I didn't (as it was a bit of a guess on my part)? Thanks in advance. Anotherclown (talk) 13:00, 10 January 2018 (UTC)

Hi AC, yeah that's the one. Thanks for doing that, I've been meaning to add it myself but just hadn't gotten around to it while I work on the body of the article. Cheers, Zawed (talk) 08:55, 11 January 2018 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited New Zealand and Australian Division, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Australian Imperial Force (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

April 2018 Milhist Backlog Drive

G'day all, please be advised that throughout April 2018 the Military history Wikiproject is running its annual backlog elimination drive. This will focus on several key areas:

  • tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
  • adding or improving listed resources on Milhist's task force pages
  • updating the open tasks template on Milhist's task force pages
  • creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the scope of military history will be considered eligible. This year, the Military history project would like to extend a specific welcome to members of Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red, and we would like to encourage all participants to consider working on helping to improve our coverage of women in the military. This is not the sole focus of the edit-a-thon, though, and there are aspects that hopefully will appeal to pretty much everyone.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 April and runs until 23:59 UTC on 30 April 2018. Those interested in participating can sign up here.

Les bon assessors

The Teamwork Barnstar
It is with great pleasure that I award this barnstar jointly and severally to auntieruth, AustralianRupert, Kees08, Nick-D, Peacemaker67 and Zawed. It has been earned partly for helping to nurse Razing of Friesoythe through ACR. I was awed and humbled by the amount of attention, effort, detail and support the six assessors brought to the task. New Zealand and Australian Division

G'day, Zawed, I have listed New Zealand and Australian Division for peer review here: Wikipedia:Peer review/New Zealand and Australian Division/archive1. If you have any suggestions, please stop by. Thanks for your time. Regards, AustralianRupert (talk) 09:47, 5 November 2018 (UTC)

@AustralianRupert: will do but when I was looking at it for B-Class assessment I thought it was in pretty good shape already. I will have a closer look in due course. Cheers, Zawed (talk) 09:25, 6 November 2018 (UTC)
G'day, the GAN for this article has concluded, but I will probably have to wait a little while before nominating for ACR. I have to travel interstate at the end of next week (for about a week), and will then lose my books for a few weeks while I move house. I would like to see how the other two articles I have at ACR get on before nominating, also. So it might have to be early January that I put NZ & A Div up for ACR. I hope that is ok? Thanks for your help so far. Regards, AustralianRupert (talk) 08:03, 24 November 2018 (UTC)
Yeah, no worries. Sorry I didn't help out more than I did, you were very responsive to the review. Hopefully, I will be able to chip in more on the ACR when that happens. Cheers, Zawed (talk) 21:30, 24 November 2018 (UTC)

Gascon campaign of 1345

Hi Zawed. Many thanks for assessing this, and even more for picking up Siege of Aiguillon. If there is any sort of QPQ I can do for you, don't hesitate to let me know. I have rolled Gascon campaign of 1345 straight into an ACR - Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Assessment/Gascon campaign of 1345. You may, or may not, wish to comment. Thanks again. Thank you

Hi Zawed. Thanks for nominating me for military historian of the year. I am surprised and a little taken aback - in a pleasant way. I had hoped that I might be nominated and make a decent showing in the newcomer category, but not imagined that I might be considered suitable for nomination in the main category; gulp!

Also thanks for upgrading the rating non-MilHist projects for my two articles which had been assessed as A class. I was (and am) not sure if it is "done" to upgrade these for one's own article and so had left them. Do you know why Siege of Berwick (1333) no longer has "An A-class article from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia." at the top? Just curious - this is not an issue which is going to keep me awake at night.

And most of all of course, thanks for continuing to plough through my efforts to expand and improve Wikipedia's coverage of the Hundred Years' War. Gog the Mild (talk) 18:14, 1 December 2018 (UTC)

@Gog the Mild: You are welcome and I think it is just recognition for the impressive body of work you have built up. My initial thought was to nominate you for the newcomer category but then checking things, I realised you had been around for a quite a while! No worries about the updating of assessment - I have done it a few times for articles I've worked on myself, but appreciate the perception it may create so do it reluctantly. RE the "An A-class article from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia" thing, I can't say I've noticed that. Do you have an example where it is present? I've had a quick look at some A-Class articles in the ANZSP task force and haven't seen any with that (several have the GA icon at the top right). Zawed (talk) 23:47, 1 December 2018 (UTC)
Now you have me wondering just how new I am. I registered 412 years ago. By 22 December 2017 I had done less than 700 edits, virtually all minor grammatical corrections or talk page comments. Then I discovered GoCE; in January I did over 100,000 words of copy editing. Mostly badly. (This is not false modesty!) I made my first substantive contribution to MilHist on 28 Jan when I submitted Razing of Friesoythe for B class assessment. This became my first GA, of 39, on 24 February; my first DYK, of 28, on 4 April; and my first A class, of 3, on 14 August. (That last was a terrifying process.) I started feeling at home with MilHist during the April drive, and discovering corners I hadn't been aware of. It has been quite a year, and still time to up all of those counts before the 19th.
Which won't happen if I go maundering on like this. You have turned me introspective - time to get on with some editing. Gog the Mild (talk) 22:21, 2 December 2018 (UTC)

Request for GA review

Hello, Mr Zawed. I very much appreciated your thoughtful review of Northern Expedition. I have another article that's been in the GA queue for quite a while, Mikhail Borodin, which is related to the previous article. I was wondering if perhaps you'd be interested in reviewing it? I'm not sure if you take such requests, but I figured I'd give it a go...RGloucester 20:13, 17 December 2018 (UTC)

@RGloucester: Wow, the backlog in the History GA section is quite big. Happy to take a look so have initiated a review with comments to follow over next few days (irrespective of your response to my following request?). I wonder if I could trouble you to consider reviewing Jean-François-Marie de Surville which is in the Geography section? Like Borodin, it has been in the GA queue for a while. Cheers, Zawed (talk) 00:11, 23 December 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for your assistance. I'd be happy to review that article. However, I reckon I won't be able to look at it until after Christmas, if that's all right...I'll be mostly away from the computer for the next few days. RGloucester 03:13, 23 December 2018 (UTC)

Hi there, I'm pleased to inform you that I've begun reviewing the article Jean-François-Marie de Surville you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria. This process may take up to 7 days.
