Copy-editing request

[edit]

Hello Zatsugaku, I have been asked at Template:Did you know nominations/Sikri Mata Temple to get the article fixed for some grammar issues for more clarity. I'd really appreciate if you can help. Thanks and regards.--Deepak G Goswami (talk) 06:38, 1 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • I see you have started working on the article. Thanks for taking up my request. However, I want to know if you are finished with it or there is still some more work to do, so that I may let the reviewer know about it at Template:Did you know nominations/Sikri Mata Temple. Also, if you hadn't noticed, few specific amendments were suggested at the mentioned page which, I believe, are still outstanding. Can you please take a look at them? Regards.--Deepak G Goswami (talk) 06:27, 2 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
    • Deepak, I had presumed I was done as I have only tangential familiarity with the topic. Because of my lack of familiarity with the review/enhancement process, I don't know how many other people, if any, receive an editing request and didn't know if was appropriate for me to update a status. However, I'm happy to take another look if that would be helpful. Because I'm quite new at copyediting on WP, much of the terminology is still foreign to me, although I would be happy to become better informed. Thus, I don't think I understand the specific requested amendments, unless perhaps I'm just not looking in the right place. Zatsugaku (talk) 17:21, 2 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
    • I'm just familiarizing myself now with the DYK criteria but I'm not up to speed on it yet. Zatsugaku (talk) 17:58, 2 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Before or even after the nomination of an article for the DYK there's no bar on any editor to not edit the article. It is quite common during such reviews that other users, who, like you, possess copy-editing skill, are requested to refine the articles if there is any such requirement. A reviewer has specifically quoted this sentence of the article, "Before the takeover, all the offerings in the temple including donated money used to make the earning of the Goswami family and earnings from the stallage related to the organisation of annual nine days long fair were deposited to the gram panchaya.", which he/she feels need either commas or breaking of sentence into two to make it more "sensible". If you can, then please take another look.--Deepak G Goswami (talk) 06:05, 4 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
      • I entered the edit (see below). I hope it is satisfactory. Thank you for asking me. I will be delighted to help you with wordsmithing in the future. Wikipedia is a vast mesh of benevolent and purposeful collaboration and I am happy to try to contribute where I can be useful and as my time allows.

"Before the takeover, all the offerings in the temple were deposited to the gram panchaya, including earnings from stallage related to the organisation’s annual nine-day long fair and funds donated for the Goswami family’s income." That is simple and acceptably clear. As two sentences it might be: "Before the takeover, all the offerings in the temple were deposited to the gram panchaya. Those revenues included earnings from stallage related to the organisation’s annual nine-day long fair and funds donated for the Goswami family’s income." As a point of analysis, we want to make a comfortable transition/differentiation between offerings, earnings, and other donations. In the case of "nine days long," it's an adjective so there is no "s" and it is hyphenated. (see https://www.quora.com/Which-one-is-correct-10-days-or-10-day)

Thank you Zatsugaku for taking such an interest in helping me out. People like you make Wikipedia an actual collaborative project! Yeah, I am aware of the hyphenated usage; thanks for going a step further to provide an explanation. Not related to our discussion but I just want to tell you how much I liked reading your userpage. It's great that you have views regarding improving Wikipedia and you know what you can ignore all the rules and guidelines, if they prevent you from improving things around here, like you can go ahead and start adding "walkability" sections in the articles of cities if you can muster enough research and coverage about this feature related to those respective cities. In short, you should start making such changes wherever you think there is a scope of betterment. I do understand many times people wouldn't like your amendments but then you can discuss and share your views to build a consensus. I, for one, would really like to collaborate with you in future maybe when I'd prepare any article enough for good or featured nomination. PS: for indentation in a repeated conversation we usually use ":", not "*"; just wanted to share it with you.--Deepak G Goswami (talk) 15:32, 4 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Deepak, While I copyedited the Administration section, I realized this evening that there was probably more to look at and I made another pass through the Fair and other sections and made some additional edits. Zatsugaku (talk) 01:04, 5 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

An article you recently created, Community Foundation for a greater Richmond, does not have enough sources and citations as written to remain published. Currently it doesn't have any in-depth references from independent, reliable sources. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. Hi Zatsugaku, thank you for improvements to this article, I see you added a navbox, Template:Cultural Conservation-Restoration, but this article is not in that navigation - if this is a good subject for navigation would you add the article to that template as well? Best regards, — xaosflux Talk 15:28, 2 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Xaosflux: Thank you so much for your kind assistance and advice here and on Letterlocking. I continue to work on it and would like to add photos but the research group's are all CC BY-NC 4.0. I've been trying to noodle my way through templates and categories and need to spend more time on WP:CAT and Categories:Content. Regarding the navbox, it was filled with useful links that helped me while improving the page...but I was also immediately ambivalent and planned to pull it because Letterlocking is a term for the mechanism of sealing rather than the object itself, which the research group/Jana Dambrogio calls a letterpacket—a term of art not yet well-recognized (AFC?) and which is not necessarily sealed with letterlocking. Similarly, the technical aspects of the navbox are about radiographic imaging CT/MXT (computational flattening is also a potential AFC). I cross-referenced and/or enhanced about seven other pages related to the letterlocking and navbox items to include letterfolding/letterlocking, paper history, application of MXT, etc. Ideally, I can now enhance Letter (message) to include letterpackets and work from there to include letterpackets in the navbox under Topics. I'm working towards teaching others how to be WP editors so please feel free to provide more direction. If I want to share the knowledge, I have to start with the right sauce. Ramen. Zatsugaku (talk) 04:59, 5 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
You are doing good! It is OK for articles to have multiple navigation box templates, but generally the article should be part of that navigation (the boxes can be collapsed if there are many). If a series of images become available getting them on commons would be ideal, an image category can be made there and added to the articles. I started that letterlocking article, but I don't know much about the topic at all - I came across the topic in the news and saw that we didn't have an article so went for it - so I'm certainly not an expert on it! Happy editing, — xaosflux Talk 11:30, 5 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Sozyar majeed hussen: Ms. Hussen: On Wikipedia there are many kind and generous people who can help you find information and suggest ways that you can study. But average citizens have no ability to give you a visa. I cannot help you leave Iraq/Kurdistan or go to Korea. I suggest you work hard to study a language (English, Korean, or other European languages). Here is a webpage I found about Korean friendship and cultural festivals in Kurdistan in 2019. Maybe you can go to one of the cultural festivals and find a way to study Korean. Talk to professors at universities that have a connection to Korea and explain your interest. The festival in 2019 was held at the University of Kurdistan Hewlêr. After finishing school, try to get a job that includes travel. When you are older there is a Korean consulate in Erbil: where you can ask questions about the requirements to travel to or study in Korea. Zatsugaku (talk) 01:50, 7 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hey there. I see you recently expanded Innsbrook Pavilion, but my head is spinning trying to figure out where this place is located. The article says it's located in Glen Allen, Virginia. Perhaps that should have been changed to "used to be located". You added that it is now located in Doswell, Virginia. This source says it's in Glen Allen, Virginia. This source puts it in Doswell. So, should this edit have said "was an 8500 capacity outdoor performance venue", instead of "is"? Thanks! Magnolia677 (talk) 10:31, 1 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Magnolia677: Hi. Thank you for the good catch. I've undated it and will try to find a bit more information and perhaps an old photo. I was focusing on the Innsbrook page and noticed it missed a link to the Pavilion, and then noticed this was out-of-date, so tried to throw in a quick change rather than a proper revision. The pavilion structure mainly consisted of a modular bandstand. Parking utilized adjacent corporate lots so its footprint is smaller than one might anticipate. There is nothing on the site at present. The property owner envisioned other potential uses for the land and thus ended the lease. (I'm sort of surprised anyone else is looking at this but I can see you have some powers beyond most mortal Wikipedians.) Thank you again. Zatsugaku (talk) 14:08, 1 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
