Template:Mesivtas has been nominated for deletion. You are invited to comment on the discussion at the template's entry on the Templates for discussion page. Thank you. Joe407 (talk) 13:53, 29 December 2010 (UTC)

The article Passaic-Clifton Orthodox Jewish Community is being discussed concerning whether it is suitable for inclusion as an article according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Passaic-Clifton Orthodox Jewish Community until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on good quality evidence, and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion template from the top of the article. Yossiea (talk) 03:08, 20 January 2011 (UTC)

Template:Uncategorized

May I suggest that next time you want to make edits to a template, especially a frequently used one, you first test it on a sandbox, like Template:Uncategorized/sandbox. Debresser (talk) 08:08, 10 May 2011 (UTC)

The article Mesivta Zichron Baruch has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

It has ZERO WP:RS and it has been seeking them for about an year now. Very small "school", not notable same category as Mesoras Mordechail

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited 2012 New York City tornadoes, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Breezy Point (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Your contributed article, Haredim and modern technology

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

Hello, I noticed that you recently created a new page, Haredim and modern technology. First, thank you for your contribution; Wikipedia relies solely on the efforts of volunteers such as you. Unfortunately, the page you created covers a topic on which we already have a page – Haredim#Practices_and_beliefs. Because of the duplication, your article has been tagged for speedy deletion. Please note that this is not a comment on you personally and we hope you will continue helping to improve Wikipedia. If the topic of the article you created is one that interests you, then perhaps you would like to help out at Haredim#Practices_and_beliefs – you might like to discuss new information at the article's talk page.

If you think that the article you created should remain separate, contest the nomination by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion" in the speedy deletion tag. Doing so will take you to the talk page where you can explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but do not hesitate to add information that is consistent with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. Additionally if you would like to have someone review articles you create before they go live so they are not nominated for deletion shortly after you post them, allow me to suggest the article creation process and using our search feature to find related information we already have in the encyclopedia. Try not to be discouraged. Wikipedia looks forward to your future contributions. Shashwat986talk 21:53, 19 September 2012 (UTC)

Notice of Palestine-Israel enforcement restriction

As a result of an arbitration case, the Arbitration Committee has acknowledged long-term and persistent problems in the editing of articles related to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, broadly understood. As a result, the Committee has enacted broad editing restrictions, described here and below.

  • Any uninvolved administrator may, on his or her own discretion, impose sanctions on any editor working in the area of conflict if, despite being warned, that editor repeatedly or seriously fails to adhere to the purpose of Wikipedia, any expected standards of behavior, or any normal editorial process.
  • The sanctions imposed may include blocks of up to one year in length; bans from editing any page or set of pages within the area of conflict; bans on any editing related to the topic or its closely related topics; restrictions on reverts or other specified behaviors; or any other measures which the imposing administrator believes are reasonably necessary to ensure the smooth functioning of the project.
  • Prior to any sanctions being imposed, the editor in question shall be given a warning with a link to this decision; and, where appropriate, should be counseled on specific steps that he or she can take to improve his or her editing in accordance with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Discretionary sanctions imposed under the provisions of this decision may be appealed to the imposing administrator, the appropriate administrators' noticeboard (currently WP:AE), or the Committee.

These editing restrictions may be applied to any editor for cause, provided the editor has been previously informed of the case. This message is to so inform you. This message does not necessarily mean that your current editing has been deemed a problem; this is a template message crafted to make it easier to notify any user who has edited the topic of the existence of these sanctions.

Generally, the next step, if an administrator feels your conduct on pages in this topic area is disruptive, would be a warning, to be followed by the imposition of sanctions (although in cases of serious disruption, the warning may be omitted). Hopefully no such action will be necessary.

This notice is only effective if given by an uninvolved administrator and logged here.--Bbb23 (talk) 19:25, 18 November 2012 (UTC)

I recommend you to take a look at other featured portals and implement the random rotation component. In the past, we have found that the maintainer "abandoned" updating the portal as soon as it's promoted to featured status. Having rotating component means that the portal can be maintained much less frequently yet presenting different types of information each time a visitor sees the portal page. OhanaUnitedTalk page 03:15, 3 December 2012 (UTC)

Not for the featured picture. And DYK selection is very limited. You should have a link to present visitors to view other selections available in rotation. Another question, how often do you plan on updating the "Weekly Torah Portion" section? I assume it's weekly, but how will you ensure that it will be updated weekly? OhanaUnitedTalk page 03:26, 3 December 2012 (UTC)
Then in that case, you may use non-featured pictures provided that they are relevant & in general good quality. OhanaUnitedTalk page 05:27, 3 December 2012 (UTC)

Death

I notice that you've added the deaths of a number of notable historical figures in places like Portal:Judaism/Today in Jewish History/19 Kislev. Unfortunately, you've frequently used the formulation "...X passed away". This is specifically contraindicated by the guidelines at WP:EUPHEMISM: "The word died is neutral and accurate; avoid euphemisms such as passed away". (Italics and Wikilink in original.) Could I encourage you to use "...X died" on future such additions? Thanks. Ammodramus (talk) 01:39, 6 December 2012 (UTC)

  • Development
    • Deployed new code on wikidata.org. All changes can be found here

    • http://test2.wikipedia.org now uses http://wikidata.org for getting language links and wikidata.org edits affecting the existing articles on test2 show up in RecentChanges (if they are not hidden)
    • Statements (think of “population: 2.000.000” and similar things) are taking shape in the interface. They are still pretty buggy though at this point.
    • It is now possible to link to images on Wikimedia Commons in a statement (think of “image: sundown_at_the_beach.png” for example)
    • Links are now protocol-relative (bugzilla:42534)
    • No longer possible to create new items and set labels when database is set to read-only
    • Added more tests to the GeoCoordinate parser
    • Make use of EditEntity in removeclaims API
    • Removed many singletons to reduce global state
    • Made SpecialSetLabel work with non-item entities
    • Improved settings system
    • Improved options of ValueFormatters
    • Improved options of ValueParsers
    • Moved label+description uniqueness check out of transaction to avoid deadlocks and changed it to only be enforced for edits changing any violating values
    • Fixed serialization of SiteArray
    • ~=[,,_,,]:3
    • Had to fix reporting of aliases in wbsearchentities again
    • Implemented integration of baserevids for statements UI API calls for editconflict detection for statements/claims/snaks
    • Universal Language Selector fallback fix for Selenium tests
    • Report URL to entity in wbsearchentites API module
    • Moved the demo system to a larger server
    • Fixed several bugs in Statements user interface, most notably, adding Statements to existing sections and layout fixes
    • Added wikibase API module on the client to provide information about the associated repo (e.g. url, script path, article path)
    • A bunch of messages for autocomments were fixed (they are automatically added as an edit summary for edits on items and co in Wikidata - for example: “‎Changed [en] description: Finnish rock band”)

Edits to Jewish holidays and Yom Kippur

Hi. Just to let you know: I think Debresser (talk · contribs) was correct to undo your edits on Jewish holidays. The "Jewish holidays or Jewish festivals" to "Jewish holidays or festivals" is stylistic, and I wouldn't have bothered on that one. But on the other two:

  • The picture shows Jewish time moving toward a destination (y'mot hamashiach, if you will). That approach is known as "linear" time. It contrasts with "cyclical" time in certain religious traditions, which essentially means that there is no ultimate eschatological goal within the religious tradition, only a never-ending continuation of the current cycles. "Linear" doesn't mean than the line is actually always straight, only that it has a destination. So the caption on the picture, showing that in Judaism, time is linear and not cyclical, is correct.
  • I know how you feel about the concept of the the kedushah of Shabbat vs. Yom Kippur (or other yamim tovim); I think we've discussed it before.
    • First of all, it's not unambiguously true, even within Orthodox/Torah tradition. Remember, for example, that there is a concept of Yom Kippur as being the one day in the year where Israel's holiness rises to the level of the angels'; remember also that Yom Kippur in and of itself has the power to atone for sins, which is not something Shabbat can do.
    • Second, for most people, the idea that a weekly day of rest could possibly be holier than a one-day-a-year event is just difficult, and I would venture that almost no Jew outside of Orthodoxy (or perhaps the most traditional wing of Conservatism) sees it that way at all. Since the purpose of the article is to inform, not to create controversy, I wouldn't pick the fight here.

So here's what's happening:

  1. User Debresser reversed your edits in Jewish holidays, and I'd recommend you let those stay reversed. The concept of Shabbat as holiest is addressed in the Shabbat section of the article.
  2. I reversed your edit in Yom Kippur. I moved the concept to a footnote, which in turn points to the section of the Shabbat article about Shabbat's status as a holy day, which is the right venue for that concept.
  3. If you really want me to, I'll add the footnote from the Yom Kippur article to the Yom Kippur section of the Jewish holidays article, too. I'd prefer not, though. I think that's too much detail for the survey Jewish holiday article, especially since the topic was aired in the Shabbat section.

Remember that not everyone reading these articles knows all the Torah you do, that some of these halachic topics are complex, and that not every article is the right venue for a discussion of complex halachic topics. (I must note: I'm studiously trying to avoid bringing complex issues into the Jewish holidays article because it is a survey article, intended to give a very high-level overview. It is not itself intended to cover these holidays in great detail, but to point people to articles with more detail.) StevenJ81 (talk) 18:41, 27 December 2012 (UTC)

WikiCup 2013 starting soon

Hi there; you're receiving this message because you have previously shown interest in the WikiCup. This is just to remind you that the 2013 WikiCup will be starting on 1 January, and that signups will remain open throughout January. Old and new Wikipedians and WikiCup participants are warmly invited to take part in this year's competition. (Though, as a note to the more experienced participants, there have been a few small rules changes in the last few months.) If you have already signed up, let this be a reminder; you will receive a message with your submissions' page soon. Please direct any questions to the WikiCup talk page. Thanks! J Milburn 19:32, 30 December 2012 (UTC)

Welcome to the 2013 WikiCup!

Hello Ypnypn, and welcome to the 2013 WikiCup! Your submissions' page is here. The competition begins at midnight UTC. The first round will last until the end of February, at which point the top 64 scorers will advance to the second round. We will be in touch at the end of every month, and signups are going to remain open until the end of January; if you know of anyone else who may like to take part, please let them know! A few reminders:

  • The rules can be found here. There have been a few changes from last year, which are listed on that page.
  • Anything you submit must have been nominated and promoted in 2013, and you need to have completed significant work upon it in 2013. (The articles you review at good article reviews does not need to have been nominated in 2013, but you do need to have started the review in 2013.) We will be checking.
  • If you feel that another competitor is breaking the rules or abusing the competition in some way, please let a judge know. Please do not remove entries from the submissions' pages of others yourself.
  • Don't worry about calculating precisely how many points everything is worth. The bot will do that. The bot may occasionally get something wrong- let a judge know, or post on the WikiCup talk page if that happens.
  • Please try to be prompt in updating submissions' pages so that they can be double-checked. Overall, however, don't worry, and have fun. It doesn't matter if you make the odd mistake; these things happen. Questions can be asked on the WikiCup talk page. Good luck! J Milburn and The ed17 18:15, 31 December 2012 (UTC)

I have done what I believe to be a thorough job at addressing the concerns you raised at Wikipedia:Featured portal candidates/Portal:Massachusetts, and would appreciate it if you could take another look and let me know if it has your support. Sven Manguard Wha? 20:44, 20 January 2013 (UTC)

Discussion on the AFT5 Request for Comment

Hey Ypnypn - this is to notify you that there is a discussion starting on the Article Feedback RfC talkpage that has ramifications for the RfC itself. Your input is much appreciated :). Thanks! and apologies if I've missed anyone Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 16:52, 28 January 2013 (UTC)

Hi Ypnypn, how are you?

Please, I ask 5 minutes of your precious time, if you can read this page I just made. Please, my English is very poor... :-)

Thanks a lot for you help.

Yes, the books are of the Abbey pubblications. Is that ok, or we can expect that the page will be cancelled? Rex Momo (talk) 18:13, 30 January 2013 (UTC)

WikiCup 2013 January newsletter

Signups are now closed; we have our final 127 contestants for this year's competition. 64 contestants will make it to the next round at the end of February, but we're already seeing strong scoring compared to previous years. Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) currently leads, with 358 points. At this stage in 2012, the leader (Irish Citizen Army Grapple X (submissions)) had 342 points, while in 2011, the leader had 228 points. We also have a large number of scorers when compared with this stage in previous years. Florida 12george1 (submissions) was the first competitor to score this year, as he was last year, with a detailed good article review. Some other firsts:

Featured articles, portals and topics, as well as good topics, are yet to feature in the competition.

This year, the bonus points system has been reworked, with bonus points on offer for old articles prepared for did you know, and "multiplier" points reworked to become more linear. For details, please see Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring. There have been some teething problems as the bot has worked its way around the new system, but issues should mostly be ironed out- please report any problems to the WikiCup talk page. Here are some participants worthy of note with regards to the bonus points:

  • United States Ed! (submissions) was the first to score bonus points, with Portland-class cruiser, a good article.
  • Australia Hawkeye7 (submissions) has the highest overall bonus points, as well as the highest scoring article, thanks to his work on Enrico Fermi, now a good article. The biography of such a significant figure to the history of science warrants nearly five times the normal score.
  • Chicago HueSatLum (submissions) claimed bonus points for René Vautier and Nicolas de Fer, articles that did not exist on the English Wikipedia at the start of the year; a first for the WikiCup. The articles were eligible for bonus points because of fact they were both covered on a number of other Wikipedias.

Also, a quick mention of British Empire The C of E (submissions), who may well have already written the oddest article of the WikiCup this year: did you know that the Fucking mayor objected to Fucking Hell on the grounds that there was no Fucking brewery? The gauntlet has been thrown down; can anyone beat it?

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.
