Question from Gumbymma (02:42, 1 June 2024)

Hi, how do you go about creating an image to use for Wikipedia? Or is it only possible to use Wikimedia commons? --Gumbymma (talk) 02:42, 1 June 2024 (UTC)

This image is on Commons but can still be used on Wikipedia
Hi Gumbymma! We recommend using Wikimedia Commons for images you intend to use on Wikipedia since the two are connected and it helps keep all out images in one place (Commons). As an example, the image in this section is hosted on Commons, but I can use it here on Wikipedia using File:Old_Point_Loma_Lighthouse.png. Where it's uploaded doesn't matter much. There are some narrow exceptions to our image copyright rules, and if the image you want to use falls under those, you should upload it to Wikipedia and not Commons, but that would only apply if it's an image you did not create or do not have a license for. Let me know if you have other questions or want anything clarified! Wug·a·po·des 02:56, 1 June 2024 (UTC)

Question from Tonkarooson (02:31, 5 June 2024)

Hello! My current mentor is away right now but I have a question that's really bugging me. I'm trying to add the list of lower alpha references(s) to my user page but I can't seem to find the correct template. I edit on the Wikipedia app and calls the [a] notes as "lower alpha (reference)", something like that. --Tonkarooson (talk) *new editor* 02:31, 5 June 2024 (UTC)

Hi Tonkarooson, you needed to use {{notelist}} to get the end notes to render, see this edit. Let me know if you need help with anything else, and happy editing! Wug·a·po·des 21:30, 5 June 2024 (UTC)

Question from Jazz Pack (09:27, 5 June 2024)

Hello! I'd like to make an article about a kinda obscure thing, but the only sources I can find about it are not independent. What do I do? --Jazz Pack (talk) 09:27, 5 June 2024 (UTC)

Hi Jazz Pack In general, if you cannot find sources that are independent of the subject, then it does not satisfy Wikipedia's inclusion criteria. There are a few exceptions depending on what the article is about. What article were you interested in writing? Wug·a·po·des 21:33, 5 June 2024 (UTC)
I was gonna write about SAIKAC (Saudi Arabian Inter-Kingdom Activities Conference), which is organization between a bunch of international schools in Saudi Arabia to do activities like sports and music. Jazz Pack (talk) 05:02, 6 June 2024 (UTC)
@Jazz Pack: You should read our inclusion criteria for organizations which would cover SAIKAC. The criteria aren't much different from our general criteria but it does give tips and suggestions specific to organizations like SAIKAC. Personally, it sounds like an organization that might have sources, but maybe they aren't in English. Do you know the organization's name in Arabic? If so, you should try searching for the Arabic name. You might also want to look at websites and newspapers that cover local news in the area where the schools compete. If you need help with either of those, you can look at Category:User_ar which lists editors who speak Arabic. Someone on that list might be willing to help you with that search. It's also possible that the sources don't exist yet, in which case you might want to edit the articles on the participating schools. Hope that helps, and be in touch if I can help more! Question from Tonkarooson (03:52, 7 June 2024)

pretty much all of the edits I've made consisting of adding K-Pop to the infoboxes got removed, most of them being said K-Pop isn't a genre. I think it is a genre. but to avoid biased opinions (which it isn't), I have a topic open for discussion named, "Is K-Pop a music genre?" I want a consensus on this, so how do I make this discussion more known to establish this consensus?? --—Tonkarooson (talk) 03:52, 7 June 2024 (UTC)

Hi again Tonkarooson! Nice to hear from you. I would recommend leaving an objective and neutrally worded notice on WT:WikiProject Music and maybe WT:WikiProject Korea to alert interested editors to the discussion. Those seem like places where people with knowledge on this topic would look for notices. Before doing this, I recommend you read the policy on appropriate and inappropriate notifications of discussion. It has some suggestions for other places to consider posting, and some common pitfalls to avoid. After a couple weeks of discussion, get in touch with me and I can give my opinions on what if any consensus there is on the issue. Hope that helps! Wug·a·po·des 19:09, 8 June 2024 (UTC)
Wow, how did I not think of the WikiProjects? I will definitely read that policy, thanks for all the help! :D

Today I wanted to write a happy song story, on a friend's birthday, but instead we have the word of thunder on top of it, which would have been better on 2 June, this year's first Sunday after Trinity. The new lilypond - thanks to DanCherek - is quite impressive. As my 2 Jun story said: Bach was fired up. - Today's Main page is rich in music, also Franz Liszt and a conductor. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:37, 11 June 2024 (UTC)

Today is "the day" for James Joyce, also for Bach's fourth chorale cantata (and why does it come before the third?) - the new pics have a mammal I had to look up. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:47, 16 June 2024 (UTC)

New pics of food and flowers come with the story of Noye's Fludde (premiered on 18 June), written by Brian Boulton. I nominated Éric Tappy because he died, and it needs support today! I nominated another women for GA in the Women in Green June run, - review welcome, and more noms planned. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:07, 18 June 2024 (UTC)

Hi Wugapodes, I've made a special holding area for the Olympics but WugBot throws a spanner in the works. Any suggestions how to ensure that it stays there? Schwede66 06:00, 25 June 2024 (UTC)

Hi Schwede66 The section needs to be below the standard special occasion holding area heading, but before the Approved Nominations header. Once WugBot encounters ==Special occasion holding area== it treats everything as part of the SOHA and keeps it as-is until it encounters ==Approved nominations== where it starts processing nominations again. As long as the holding area is between those two, it should stick around. Wug·a·po·des 20:28, 25 June 2024 (UTC)
Thanks for the explainer and thank you also for fixing this already. Much appreciated. Schwede66 03:42, 26 June 2024 (UTC)

Question from Tonkarooson (07:04, 25 June 2024)

Hi again, my current mentor is still away even though that message went away lol. Here are the questions I had sent to him that I really want to know the answer to:

  1. Is it possible to have more than one mentors/have two separate people to adopt the same user?
  2. Do I need special permission or ask high rank editor to make pages that are not articles? —Tonkarooson (talk) 07:04, 25 June 2024 (UTC)
Hi Tonkarooson
  1. I don't understand what you mean by "drop box"? What templates have you been looking at?
  2. Formally, I don't know how those processes work well enough to say for sure, but informally yes most long-term editors have had many informal mentors so you're welcome to ask for support from anyone you like.
  3. Usually not. What kind of page were you thinking of making and why?
Wug·a·po·des 20:43, 25 June 2024 (UTC)
  1. On the Wikipedia app, you can click on the infobox for it to be viewed but if you click it again it goes away and is smaller.
  2. Awesome! That's so great to know!
  3. Like redirects, archives, or having another page for my user page (eg. User:insert username/blah blah etc). I can just do those on my own? And why? Because of discussions about wanting to change the article name and adding a redirect page or redirects to the thing that isn't an article (eg. Fire Alarm (Lil Uzi Vert song), or Autistic).
Tonkarooson (talk) 22:36, 25 June 2024 (UTC)
(1) I don't know anything about the app, so I don't think I can help here. You might want to ask at The Tea House or The Technical Village Pump. (3) You can just make those on your own, but read the guideline on redirects first. Also, don't make archives or subpages for anyone without their permission because it is considered rude. Wug·a·po·des 21:24, 26 June 2024 (UTC)

Update about Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Music#Is_K-Pop_a_music_genre?

So it's been 2 weeks since our last discussion here.

Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Music#Is_K-Pop_a_music_genre? hasn't been active since 22:47, 12 June 2024 (UTC). And the link for the for the last message is this here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Music#c-Tonkarooson-20240612224700-QuietHere-20240612000200.

Feel free to read that discussion on WikiProject Music. There hasn't been any messages about this on WikiProject Korea. —Tonkarooson (talk) 04:59, 20 June 2024 (UTC)

Hi again Tonkarooson, I've taken a look a the discussion. The consensus seems to be that we should not refer to K-Pop as a genre. The first reason is that the K-Pop article itself is not clear on whether it is a genre. Even the most knowledgable writers on the subject cannot come to an agreement on how to define it, so it is too soon to make a firm decision one way or the other. The second reason is that similar topics like J-Rock have been removed from genre lists, so even outside of K-Pop there seems to be no agreement on whether "music from an East Asian country" is a genre. Based on the discussion, I would recommend you avoid adding K-Pop to genre lists for now. Wug·a·po·des 20:57, 25 June 2024 (UTC)
I see.
The article "Korean hip hop" says quote, "Korean hip-hop, also known as K-hip-hop or K-rap, is a subgenre of the South Korean popular music.". This page has a template mentioning that the article is written from the person's own perspective. I never mention this in the original post because I wasn't sure if it was good enough as evidence if K-Pop is a music genre or not.
I also know of another discussion about this that isn't on Wikipedia.
Well, I still think K-Pop is a music genre (reasons listed at the top of the discussion), but my opinion can't be used all across, so maybe a RfC could work, especially seeing how popular K-Pop is. —Tonkarooson (talk) 22:39, 25 June 2024 (UTC)
@Tonkarooson: An RfC would not be a good idea right now. If you feel strongly about this, you should first do research on how reliable, independent, secondary sources describe K-Pop or the music industry in East Asia generally. This would require you to look at reliable sources that specialize in music. I'm not an expert in this area, but I would imagine some examples would be Rolling Stone or its East Asian peers. You might also look at articles in academic journals which study these industries. Without this kind of evidence, you will not be able to convince the rest of the community that you are correct. Sergecross73 and QuietHere both seem knowledgeable about music publications and general research. You should ask them if they know of any places where you could start your search. As a bonus, your research could help you improve the Korean hip hop page in the meantime. Wug·a·po·des 21:15, 26 June 2024 (UTC)
Sounds great, and fun! But how exactly sources would find the correct answer if this is mostly about opinions and original research some? —Tonkarooson (talk) 23:27, 26 June 2024 (UTC)
On Wikipedia, we follow WP:V - we go by what reliable sources say. Original research is a problem when it comes directly from editors like you and me. It's not a problem when it comes from publications like Billboard or Rolling Stone.
My two cents, as I think I mentioned before, would be to take much more time learning Wikipedia and how it works before pursuing this. This is bound to be a rather high level, contentious discussion. I'd work on learning the basics first. (No offense, but even though your account is 5 years old, you're just over 400 edits. That's not very much.) Sergecross73 msg me 13:54, 27 June 2024 (UTC)
So, what should I start first with, learn more about Wikipedia or what @Wugapodes had said?
I had forgotten that I had a Wikipedia account. This is also easy to see I'm not a long time editorTonkarooson (talk) 20:56, 27 June 2024 (UTC)

Question from Tonkarooson (00:27, 1 July 2024)

Hello again, I hope you are having a good day! I have a couple questions I would appreciate an answer for.

  1. How can I tell if a website is reliable enough?
  2. Is https://www.merriam-webster.com/ and https://www.dictionary.com/ (considered) reliable as a source/citation? --Tonkarooson (discuss). 00:27, 1 July 2024 (UTC)
@Tonkarooson: If you hadn't seen it already, I would recommend reading our guideline on identifying reliable sources. The main takeaway is that "reliable" is very contextual. For a given claim, is the source of the claim an authority on the matter? For something like music, I'd trust industry professionals, musicians, trade magazines, and musicologists over fan zines, blog posts, or experts in fields that aren't music. So while dictionaries like Merriam-Webster are usually reliable, being a generalist source means they might not be as convincing as, say, a trade magazine since the authors of dictionaries are rarely experts in the topics they write about. Question from Sourcetostar (16:43, 3 July 2024)

Hello, I am new to Wiki, I just noticed you are my mentor, which I very much appreciate!

I have been trying to create a page for ICC FraudNet. I was working on this last year, but had some other projects took priority, and 6 months passed, hence the page got deleted. Yesterday I requested the draft be re-instated but it was denied.

Can you help me please? If you can't help, I understand, however, if it's not too much trouble please do let me know.

Look forward to hearing from you. --Sourcetostar (talk) 16:43, 3 July 2024 (UTC)

Mention in blogpost/twitter

Hi Wugapodes,

You might want to know that you were mentioned (in a positive light) in this article on David Gerard, as well as in the Twitter discussion surrounding the article.

Have a great day! agucova (talk) 14:42, 11 July 2024 (UTC)

Thanks Agucova. I skimmed the article, and while interesting, it's quite long and I don't think I'm the target audience for it since I have no real interest in online rationalist communities. I appreciate the heads-up though. If there's a conduct concern that occurred after the 2021 discussion quoted, I'd recommend contacting the Arbitration Committee or the new conflict of interest report system.
