Question from CT55555 on Uranium mining in the Bancroft area (01:00, 21 December 2021)

Hi, I'm a bit lost. I've been working on this article https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uranium_mining_in_the_Bancroft_area and someone recently pointed out that I rely too heavily on quotes and the tag directed me to Wikisource, someone there suggested I use Commons and so I did so, having just uploaded the document that I quote too much there (it's a Canadian government publication, in the public domain, I verified). I just don't know what it the next step to satisfy the guidance here, is it to share an image of the page I quote, rather than quote? For what it's worth, the actual quote is just a letter that some guy wrote and therefore is absolutely not copyright, alone or as part of this document.

Hi CT55555, good questions, and I'm glad you're learning about our other projects as well! The goal of Wikipedia is largely to summarize what sources say rather than quote them directly or extensively. In general, it's better for you to write information in your own words and cite the source that backs up the claim. An important thing to note is that letters can be subject to copyright. I'm unfamiliar with Canadian copyright law, but if it's similar to US law, we assume copyright on the letter exists unless it was produced by a government official as part of their work duties. If you spend some time summarizing the quotes into original writing though, I think the article will be much improved. @Bilorv: Thank you for bringing this up with me, and I'm sorry that I did not appreciate how offensive it would come off. I will be more considerate in the future. For what it's worth, I am sincerely glad that you get to spend this season as you like, whatever your seasonal traditions, and in my head I imagined a more cordial tone. Reading it back now though, I can see how it reads as anything but cordial, and I'm sorry that I did not realize that sooner. Would you like me to revise the comment by striking or removing it? RFA 2021 Completed

The 2021 re-examination of RFA has been completed. 23 (plus 2 variants) ideas were proposed. Over 200 editors participated in this final phase. Three changes gained consensus and two proposals were identified by the closers as having the potential to gain consensus with some further discussion and iteration. Thanks to all who helped to close the discussion, and in particular Primefac, Lee Vilenski, and Ymblanter for closing the most difficult conversations and for TonyBallioni for closing the review of one of the closes.

The following proposals gained consensus and have all been implemented:

  1. Revision of standard question 1 to Why are you interested in becoming an administrator? Special thanks to xaosflux for help with implementation.
  2. A new process, Administrative Action Review (XRV) designed to review if an editor's specific use of an advanced permission, including the admin tools, is consistent with policy in a process similar to that of deletion review and move review. Thanks to all the editors who contributed (and are continuing to contribute) to the discussion of how to implement this proposal.
  3. Removal of autopatrol from the administrator's toolkit. Special thanks to Wugapodes and Seddon for their help with implementation.

The following proposals were identified by the closers as having the potential to gain consensus with some further discussion and iteration:

  1. An option for people to run for temporary adminship (proposal, discussion, & close)
  2. An optional election process (proposal & discussion and close review & re-close)

Editors who wish to discuss these ideas or other ideas on how to try to address any of the six issues identified during phase 1 for which no proposal gained are encouraged to do so at RFA's talk page or an appropriate village pump.

A final and huge thanks all those who participated in this effort to improve our RFA process over the last 4 months.

@Bison X: Unlikely. The menu is created after the wikitext is parsed, so including a template like that would be difficult. It's a good idea though, and if I had more time one of my longer term goals would be figuring out some kind of preview or hover text that gives information on how the templates are supposed to be used. Hi theleekycauldron, ArbCom results hit right when I was planning on making the edits so between the committee transition and winter holidays this unfortunately has gotten delayed. WugBot currently uses the SOHA as its termination condition, so moving the section requires reworking its internal logic. How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

I've given some more thought to User_talk:Wugapodes/Archive_23#Paid_voting_/_commenting_plan. I think the easiest things to implement would be:

  • 1. A partnership between the WMF and one or more freelancing sites. The freelancing site would regulate WMF rules on the freelancers and employers. In return, they would get a page on wikipedia proper. The sole purpose of the project would be paid translation of content from one language encyclopedia to another. The freelancing website would ban other types of employment related to wikipedia. Such a program would hopefully lure paid commenters/voters to the partner freelancing site due to its larger volume of work. This program might be controversial for enwiki, so maybe it could be started first on another language encyclopedia. I imagine many of the African and Asian language wikipedias would readily accept such a program. Then if it seems to work for them, enwiki can deploy a similar system.
  • 2. Instead of #1, a barter system on the reward board, where hours of translation can be bartered between languages. No token system would be used, rather it would be something like, "One hour of English to Spanish in return for one hour of Spanish to English". Offers could be for new translation work, for cleaning up machine translates, or proofing translations done with limited skill. A section of the reward board could be devoted to classified ads for barter. Syntax tutoring in exchange for translating would also be allowed.
  • 3. This would be proposal #2, but allowing either live chat or skype for people using the program. Synchronous communication lowers the difficulty barrier when working with google translate-dependent discussions.--Epiphyllumlover (talk) 02:57, 11 January 2022 (UTC)

In an attempt to do this, I added Women in television in the category section of the Women television journalists. Apparently I have done this wrong because nothing appears in Women in television as a subcategory. @MrMeAndMrMe: It looks like you did it right; I see women TV journalists as a subcategory of Woman in TV. In my experience, it can take a few minutes before changes to categories appear and sometimes only after purging the page. Discretionary sanctions topic area changes

In a process that began last year with WP:DS2021, the Arbitration Committee is evaluating Discretionary Sanctions (DS) in order to improve it. A larger package of reforms is slated for sometime this year. From the work done so far, it became clear a number of areas may no longer need DS or that some DS areas may be overly broad.

The topics proposed for revocation are:

  • Senkaku islands
  • Waldorf education
  • Ancient Egyptian race controversy
  • Scientology
  • Landmark worldwide

The topics proposed for a rewording of what is covered under DS are:

  • India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan
  • Armenia/Azerbaijan

Additionally any Article probation topics not already revoked are proposed for revocation.

    • The user group oversight will be renamed suppress. This is for technical reasons. This is the technical name. It doesn't affect what you call the editors with this user right on your wiki. This is planned to happen in three weeks. You can comment in Phabricator if you have objections. As usual, these labels can be translated on translatewiki (direct links are available) or by administrators on your wiki.
