MSU Interview

Dear Worm That Turned,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your name HERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) 07:26, 12 February 2012 (UTC) Young June Sah --Yjune.sah (talk) 22:10, 15 February 2012 (UTC)

Already agreed! WormTT · (talk) 09:13, 16 February 2012 (UTC)

RainbowDash / Futtershy and an unsuccessful ArbCom candidate

[1], [2] – Out of curiosity, are you the unsuccessful ArbCom candidate mentioned in these diff's? --Michaeldsuarez (talk) 16:32, 16 February 2012 (UTC)

I'll probably end up getting someone in trouble by eliminating everyone who it wasn't, but I've never heard of Fluttershy or RainbowDash (besides possibly an ELC toy or a My Little Pony). Not me, m'lud. WormTT · (talk) 16:51, 16 February 2012 (UTC)

Back from the desert island!

Hi WTT, how have you been? Very busy in your new sysop role I should imagine. Thank you for being patient while I was away very busy in real life. I should have a little more time over the next few months and would like to pick up again where we left off with my adoptee lessons. Would you be able to 're-activate' me so I can continue in your school? Sincerely, Antarctic-adventurer (talk) 19:05, 16 February 2012 (UTC)

Consider yourself reactivated! Everything is at User:Worm That Turned/Adopt/Antarctic-adventurer, just as you left it. WormTT · (talk) 08:54, 17 February 2012 (UTC)
Great! Thanks WTT. I'll wander over later and have a go at the first set of questions where I left off. Antarctic-adventurer (talk) 09:23, 17 February 2012 (UTC)
No probs! See you there soon. WormTT · (talk) 09:26, 17 February 2012 (UTC)

Hi Worm,

I was actually going to suggest you to her as a an adopter but noticed you'd posted on her talk page already. I think the problem being faced is she has quite an "I know best" attitude that is going to get hit hard when she runs into some more serious hurdles than just inappropriately wanting to adopt another user. Her reply to you indicates to me that she would enter adoption only because you really want to be her adopter as opposed to her realising that she needs adoption. Blackmane (talk) 08:48, 17 February 2012 (UTC)

Indeed, but unfortunately if she's not interested in being adopted, there's no point in forcing her. I wish her the best of luck, she may do alright (it's not a case of "needing" adoption, but I do think adoption would be beneficial). If she get herself into schtuck, I'll be around to help pull her out. WormTT · (talk) 08:51, 17 February 2012 (UTC)
Unfortunately, that is true. It may also be a spot of "rebelliousness" when so many people tell her she should do this, it is probably expected that she would baulk at it. Blackmane (talk) 11:42, 17 February 2012 (UTC)

Hey, I'll drop by when I get a chance- I'll hopefully find some time over the next few days, but it won't be tonight. Great work so far- I'd love to see the article promoted! J Milburn (talk) 15:37, 14 February 2012 (UTC)

Oops, I saw it on the watchlist and just jumped in, I didn't realise it was a GAN, hope I didn't do any damage. It was interesting so....I got carried away. J3Mrs (talk) 22:30, 15 February 2012 (UTC)
No worries, you've done a great job! WormTT · (talk) 08:29, 16 February 2012 (UTC)
Left some more thoughts- it's coming along nicely. J Milburn (talk) 20:21, 19 February 2012 (UTC)

your adoptee wants more advice

Hi Worm,

I've discovered some copyvio or copypaste in an article I've been review. I've been reading the various wiki articles on this issue, but they're hard to understand exactly how much can be copied "more than five words" or the "close paraphrase stuff". Also, I don't want to come across like a ten ton truck. How to handle this? MathewTownsend (talk) 20:56, 18 February 2012 (UTC)

Well, it's not acceptable in any situation, but how hard you should come down on the user does depend on a number of things, whether they should know better, how bad the violation is etc. I'm afraid I'd actually have to see the violation to advise further. You can email me if you feel more comfortable doing that. WormTT · (talk) 21:31, 18 February 2012 (UTC)
I posted the example with the source and the editor reacted quite rightly and saw it as a big problem. She said she'd like to put off any more work on the article until tomorrow after she has checked through it.
Just out of curiosity, how would you interpret this:
  • ""The family lived rather conservatively, with neither parent developing a habit of smoking or drinking. They also never seemed to run out of money before the third week of the month."?
  • I suggested: "The family lived frugally and never seemed to run out of money before the third week of the month. Neither parent drank or smoke."?
  • She said: (the suggested change comes across too clumsy. And some take offense to the term frugal.) How about "The family lived financially conservative, yet never seemed to run out of money by the third week of the month, due to his mother's talent at stretching a meal. Her son's favorite dish was a casserole using a mixture of onions, celery, rice, and mushroom soup over ground beef." (the source wouldn't change.)
  • Is financially conservative like fiscally conservative? And why would being so make it more likely to run out of money etc? And does finacial consrvatism related to whether the parents drank or smoked?
  • I said:
"Although his father served as game warden, he was rarely found hunting and disliked the thought of making trophies out of heads and carcasses of animals." - I don't think (I may be wrong) that a game warden necessarily engages in hunting or making trophies out of heads and carcasses... I think they enjoy nature, but as to the rest .... Do you have information about this aspect?
  • She replied:
(I'm in the northwest and know wardens in Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming that hunt and work with taxidermists, that said, I added a source)
  • I guess some of this seems like faint OR, as I don't understand what this has to do with Owsley subsequent career. It's this (to me) rather strang juxaposition of things that makes it hard for me to understand what is meant.

You can ignore all this as I'm lapsing into gibbrish! (But any suggestions are welcome!) MathewTownsend (talk) 22:36, 18 February 2012 (UTC)

I see... I'll have a look at this in a bit :) WormTT · (talk) 08:26, 20 February 2012 (UTC)
Right, well I've had a look. I'm not too worried about the juxtaposition, or even the the OR which looks very mild to me. Even if a game warden doesn't hunt or mount, the will work with people who do on a regular basis, so the idea that the warden has distaste for the people they work with might well have relevence.
I'm more concerned by the examples of copyright problems. It's not the whole article, but the odd sentence here and there is worrying. I would suggest going through the sources in depth to see if there are any more examples. You've found two examples already, if you find another 2-3, I'd stop looking and let the editor take over (perhaps even failing the GA at the time). I've worked with Cindy in the past (helping one of my adoptees) and I know she's a helpful friendly person, though I've no experience of her writing. WormTT · (talk) 09:31, 21 February 2012 (UTC)
  • Please look at this: Talk:Douglas W. Owsley/GA1. How should I handle it? I believe this is totally unacceptable. MathewTownsend (talk) 21:39, 22 February 2012 (UTC)
    • What's even more alarming is this editor's user page says: "I am an Online Ambassador, member of the Ambassador Selection Team, and member of the Ambassador Steering Committee. I have worked with university professors and students through the Public Policy Initiative over the past year and attended the Wikipedia in Higher Education Summit in July 2011, to assist with expanding the project to the global community. I am now part of the Wikipedia Education Program, with an emphasis on the United States and Canada."
Well, it certainly goes into close paraphrasing, possibly further into plagiarism - not sure about copyright violation. Best thing to do is fail it, citing the amount of violations - allow Cindamuse to re-write the article in a less problematic way. That's a big article to re-write though. Depending on how unacceptable you feel her work, you could do a bit of research on her past articles - consider a WP:CCI. I'd personally think that's a bit extreme - if you're unsure, perhaps email User:Moonriddengirl, our resident copyright expert, a foundation staff member and an overall lovely person.
As for how Cindamuse has those roles, it's a very different skill set to writing articles and one she is very good at (I've bumped into her a number of times while I was being an Online Ambassador). We're a volunteer project, and if someone is good at something we let them do it! WormTT · (talk) 09:50, 23 February 2012 (UTC)
  • The problem is that Cindamuse doesn't agree that it's close paraphrasing and quoted a bunch of legal stuff justifying it. See her response on Talk:Douglas W. Owsley/GA1. So if I fail it, she'll just renominate it and it will possibly pass if the new reviewer isn't thorough. I will email Moonriddengirl as you suggest, I guess. MathewTownsend (talk) 14:46, 23 February 2012 (UTC)
Hmmmm. Well, Wikipedia policy is often more strict than legal requirements (on fair use for example), so whilst I'm sure she's right (and it's not a "copyright violation") I'm still not sure that we should be accepting it. I'd get a second opinion from someone a little more experienced in the area if I were you, as I suggest, Moonriddengirl would be a great choice, but perhaps one of the other editors who wrote the dispatches you mentioned? I'll be keeping an eye on things, if not actively interfering - and may comment if anything goes wrong WormTT · (talk) 15:02, 23 February 2012 (UTC)
  • Read with interest your conversation. I appreciate the time and effort that has gone into reviewing this article, but remain concerned at the lack of neutrality and the equating of my work with the quality of the WEP and OAs. Neutrality is tantamount here. I am concerned that Mathew's bias of the WEP may be clouding his review of this article. Note that the "legal stuff" I presented was directly from Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. Not my legal stuff, but guidance offered for Wikipedians. Note that Mathew contacted Moonriddengirl in her official WMF capacity, to which she cannot address online issues. I have asked her to take look at the article in her personal role as Moonriddengirl. Best regards, Cind.amuse (Cindy) 15:58, 23 February 2012 (UTC)
Ah, yes - well, Mathew seems to have accepted my answer on that and he'd hardly be the first editor to believe that an problems in content creation means problems in all areas. I'm not sure that he's biased against WEP - especially since I'm involved in it... if he was I think he'd have disowned me. I'm just headed home now, but hopefully Mathew will contact Moonriddengirl directly (not as Mdennis) if he reads this. I just hope to be proved wrong :) WormTT · (talk) 16:12, 23 February 2012 (UTC)
  • No, Mathew doesn't seem to get it, nor did he apparently accept your answer. Immediately following your remark, his reply assumed bad faith on my part, while he expressed the same concerns more adamantly at Maggie's Mdennis talk page. The WEP has been concerned with the environment of the GAN and FAN process and their approach with editors and students involved in the WEP program. While I am certainly more than willing to address specific issues of paraphrasing and work to bring any outstanding issues into compliance, the accusations and innuendo are inappropriate. Note that this article has been through DYK and no copyright or paraphrasing issues were flagged there. (Edited to add: I spoke with Maggie. Since she was first approached in her WMF role, she cannot take a look at either the article or GA discussion. I'll contact Derrick.) Best regards, Cind.amuse (Cindy) 16:48, 23 February 2012 (UTC)

Online offline box

Hey Worm, how do I make that online/offline thing work? I'd like to put one on my user page I tried a basic copy and paste of yours onto my talk page but it didn't work.. advice?? Montanabw(talk) 21:16, 19 February 2012 (UTC)

(Impudent Adoptee) I don't know if Worm uses the same method as me (my user page, top bar), but I created User:Gilderien/Status and added importScript('User:Xenocidic/statusChanger2.js'); on my custom javascript page, User:Gilderien/vector.js to get clickable links by the contributions link at the top, and then put {{Statustop|link=User:Gilderien/Status|img_link=Template:Statustop|offset=430}} on my user page. Hope this helps, I had to get Cyberpower to help me with it.--Gilderien Talk|Contribs 21:26, 19 February 2012 (UTC)
poop! Javascript pages. I've totally avoided doing one of those because I totally don't get it. But maybe now's the time to learn (or tomorrow, maybe...) Montanabw(talk) 21:34, 19 February 2012 (UTC)
Most editors have a status page on Wikipedia somewhere and then use {{statustop}}, which reads the page and changes the template based on the status page. (They then manually update the status page, regularly). What you can do is play around with Javascript, in the way Gilderian has - which should allow you to press a button and it will update for you (Will still require an update to wikipedia I believe).
My template is a bit more sneaky. I'm too lazy, too forgetful and too opinionated to add an edit just to say I'm online every day. So what I've done is set up the page you looked at which gives the hours that I do 90% of my editing. That's not to say I'm definitely online during them, nor that I'm definitely offline outside of them, but I thought it might be helpful. Now, if you look at my availability box, it checks if today is a Saturday or a Sunday, then puts me offline if it is. Then checks if it is between 8am and 4pm and puts me online if it is.
So if you tried a copy paste of mine yesterday, it wouldn't have worked - as it was a Sunday. If you like my method, let me know what hours you'd want and I can set it up for you. It would be cached so it's not perfect (can be 30 mins or so wrong), but it does the job. WormTT · (talk) 08:39, 20 February 2012 (UTC)
My wikipedia appearences are often a bit random, might be at work or home... hmmm. Javascript, which I've never messed with ... hmmm. Manually turning things on or off, maybe... hmm. Must chew on the possibilities. Montanabw(talk) 17:08, 20 February 2012 (UTC)
Yeah, but if you add the Xeno script it really is a doddle. I can manage it and I really can't code anything but Python or Scratch at all.--Gilderien Talk|Contribs 17:35, 20 February 2012 (UTC)
The javascript Xeno script is the easiest and most effective way, amd very widely used. Again, I can help you set that up if you like :) just drop me a line. WormTT · (talk) 08:48, 21 February 2012 (UTC)

Question

What is an essay? Androzaniamy (talk) 19:37, 20 February 2012 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) A wikipedia essay is a page written by some users with views or documenting a common practice in Wikipedia, but it does not have to be followed like a policy, or a guideline. See WP:ESSAYS for more details. Rcsprinter (gossip) 21:41, 20 February 2012 (UTC)
Exactly as Rcsprinter123 says. They're worth reading as they can give valuable insight into community practise and opinion, but it is subject to less scrutiny than policies and guidelines and therefore can be contradictory. For example Wikipedia:You don't need to cite that the sky is blue and Wikipedia:You do need to cite that the sky is blue are contradictory essays. As are Wikipedia:Don't template the regulars and Wikipedia:Do template the regulars. WormTT · (talk) 08:46, 21 February 2012 (UTC)

Your (other) adoptee wants advice

I left you a question on our talk page, if that's the right place to put it. Thanks for adopting me; I'm not sure if I mentioned it before, but I appreciate it greatly.--Gilderien Talk|Contribs 18:55, 21 February 2012 (UTC)

Workshop strikethru

I just changed your strikethrough on Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Article titles and capitalisation/Workshop - you got one paragraph by Greg L while striking through JCS's contributions. Hope that's ok. --SarekOfVulcan (talk) 18:07, 23 February 2012 (UTC)

I have no problem with it, thanks a lot! WormTT · (talk) 08:13, 24 February 2012 (UTC)

Cleanup request

Could you take a look at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Article titles and capitalisation/Workshop#SarekOfVulcan's evidence and clean it up a bit, before I start replying? I'm not sure the current formatting is quite what was intended. Thanks. --SarekOfVulcan (talk) 18:39, 24 February 2012 (UTC)

Sorry I missed this being offline Sarek, looks like it was caught by AGK quite quickly. WormTT · (talk) 10:18, 27 February 2012 (UTC)

This problem user has just left this on Timotheus Canens (the blocking admin for his block)'s talk page. Eagles 24/7 (C) 15:27, 25 February 2012 (UTC)

DYK

You might be interested to know the Zennor Head is currently on the main page (20:53, 25 February 2012 (UTC)), albeit with a different hook (a debate over whether a humourous comment by the editor makes the whole "Z to Z" book worthless). Thanks for all your help.--Gilderien Talk|Contribs 20:53, 25 February 2012 (UTC)

Also, I hope you don't mind, I thought your tabs design for your user page was so awesome I adapted it for my own. If you don't want me to use it just say and I will remove it.--Gilderien Talk|Contribs 21:48, 25 February 2012 (UTC)
I know I didn't reply, but I did see it and you should be very pleased with yourself - well done! I remember my first DYK, which was Doom Bar, just round the corner! And if you're interested, you got 3952 views on the main page.
As for my usepage, please feel free to take what you want - it's all yours! WormTT · (talk) 09:53, 27 February 2012 (UTC)

Adoptee question

Hello dear Worm,

Do I get more lessons, please? MathewTownsend (talk) 00:55, 26 February 2012 (UTC)

You do... I've just put the test up for Templates, see how you do. If you get completely stuck, we can move on. WormTT · (talk) 10:26, 27 February 2012 (UTC)

Adoption

Do you have room for another adoptee? New user Walter55024 appears to be having a deal of trouble figuring out Wikipedia and is probably close to being blocked. He has said he is open to doing adoption lessons, and I told him I would ask someone who I thought might be a good match if they (ie you) would help get him started. Cloveapple (talk) 19:39, 26 February 2012 (UTC)

Quite possibly, I've left him a message at his page. WormTT · (talk) 10:27, 27 February 2012 (UTC)
Thank you for stopping by his page. I'm in awe of your bright cheery approach. That was a very nice note you left. Cloveapple (talk) 10:53, 27 February 2012 (UTC)
What can I say, I'm a bright cheery person! No, actually I thought I'd try something a little different after reading his userpage and talk page - I thought a strong positive approach would work best. Here's hoping it'll work out. WormTT · (talk) 10:57, 27 February 2012 (UTC)
Sorry if I ended up requesting the impossible. I could see it was beyond my current skill set but didn't realize it would be beyond anybody's. Cloveapple (talk) 18:18, 1 March 2012 (UTC)

Thanks

Hello, dear! Thanks for being on my talk page. I'll like to have some tips as you offered in your last edit on my talk page. But moreover i want to hear from you that am i qualified for any more than a user right like checkers, reviewers, managers, oversighters, admins and many more on wiki???? I'd like to be someone more than a user. TariButtar 14:38, 27 February 2012 (UTC) talk to me

Please have a look, the image is about the districts of Indian Punjab/East Punjab - in other words, the district map of Indian Punjab, but it's an outdated image that not includes the newly born/created districts: Pathankot district, Fazilka district, Barnala district. But as it's used on many pages in english wiki and globally, it's providing an incompelete info. Want you to decide better. TariButtar (talk) 15:52, 27 February 2012 (UTC)

Maps certainly aren't my strong point - perhaps you could have a chat with the people at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Maps? WormTT · (talk) 15:59, 27 February 2012 (UTC)

My request to close the Workshop page

Worm, I have posted this at AGK's talkpage:

AGK, it is distressing to me that this ArbCom Workshop page is still open. No one wants to suppress free discussion; but a new and irregular posting has now been made, interrupting my life yet again to answer it. I have conformed to all procedural requirements the best way I can, and it is unfair that others are permitted to take advantage of that (perhaps hoping to get the last word, I suppose).

Please close and protect the page now, since your revised deadline has long passed. Anyone can carry on discussion at the talkpages for the case, if they really must.

But perhaps the matter is for a clerk to deal with, so I draw your attention to it also.

I see AGK sorted this while I was offline. Let me know if there's anything more you need done. WormTT · (talk) 09:15, 28 February 2012 (UTC)

Qs

Re your Qs on Five Pillars: Q4: I think you are trying to say "is the BBC a reliable source writing about its own series 'The Troubles'?". Please re-word the question to make this clear and fix the The Troubles link to point to the article about the series. Q7: this question is now too easy - follow the link to hopsandpips.com! — RHaworth (talk · contribs) 09:55, 28 February 2012 (UTC)

With respect to to The Troubles, I was referring to the etho-national conflict in Northern Ireland, not any specific TV series, just to see if an editor is understanding what editorial oversight is, and gently introducing concepts of NPOV (when referring to ITV). The hops and pips one is a little annoying, it was "redoing the site" for the last few weeks, didn't realise it had pulled it all together. I'll swap it out for a similar site, though it's less comprehensive than hops and pips was. WormTT · (talk) 10:08, 28 February 2012 (UTC)

Are you suggesting that ITV is widely regarded as an unreliable source? The answer I would give to your question is "BBC news and ITV news are both reliable sources for Wikipedia purposes but, given a choice, BBC news is generally considered the more reliable". Is that the answer you were expecting? If so, a) it is far too subtle a difference to be worth using as a question and b) would you expect someone from Oklahoma (young or old) to be able to even start answering? — RHaworth (talk · contribs) 11:08, 28 February 2012 (UTC)

There is only one purpose to the questions I set and that is to check the user has put a little effort in to understanding the topic. Your answer is absolutely correct, as would be thousands of different answers. The only answer I don't accept is the one word "Yes" or "No". I want to see some evidence of a thought process. I've rephrased the question, to be "Would you consider BBC news to be a reliable source on it's rival, ITV?" - which I should have done months ago, as lots of people read it the same way you do, and that explicitly shows the reason behind the question. WormTT · (talk) 11:16, 28 February 2012 (UTC)

Fine. Perhaps you should make this edit permanent. — RHaworth (talk · contribs) 12:03, 28 February 2012 (UTC)

Yes, that makes things a lot clearer. I'll add it in. WormTT · (talk) 12:05, 28 February 2012 (UTC)

Hey WTT. I know you do a lot of adopting, so feel free to redirect people to me. Btw, you might want to update your dispute resolution lesson :-)(Someone has already done it) Steven Zhang DR goes to Wikimania! 00:00, 29 February 2012 (UTC)

Thanks Steven. I seem to be a bit of a focal point for adoption these days, so if you keep an eye on my page, I'm sure you'll spot the odd request. I'd have no problem with you swooping in and grabbing someone who comes and asks me for adoption, and especially anyone who asks for adoption by proxy. At the moment, I'm fairly full so if anyone else turns up, I'll point them your way. WormTT · (talk) 11:36, 29 February 2012 (UTC)

Name of article

Hello, i'm here again to get help about on article name/title. Plz tell me with which title should i start an article, the name of the artist by which he/she is best known or the original name of the artist? I know the other one of these can be a redirect but which should be the title of article? TariButtar (talk) 02:33, 29 February 2012 (UTC)

Well both Lady Gaga and Beyonce articles go by the most common name rather than the real name.
If it's wrong it will get changed eventually anyway.
Hope that helps Jenova20 11:26, 29 February 2012 (UTC)
Bang on! Jenova is 2 for 2! The most common name is what we should use, per WP:COMMONNAME, but if there's any problems with that name, we can move it. WormTT · (talk) 11:33, 29 February 2012 (UTC)

Any tool

Hey, admin. Is there any tool to find the author of an article? I means to find who started a particular article? Or any easy way? TariButtar (talk) 03:24, 29 February 2012 (UTC)

Sorry to butt in. Have you looked at the first contributor in the history?
Hope that helps Jenova20 11:23, 29 February 2012 (UTC)
That's a good point, I haven't got round to answering this morning's questions yet! Jenova is exactly right, if you look at the history (press View History up at the top) and go to "Earliest", you can see who the first contributor is. Remember, no one WP:OWNs anything at Wikipedia and the article will likely have been changed by lots of people. WormTT · (talk) 11:32, 29 February 2012 (UTC)

Long time no speak

"It, along with other conversion therapy groups has been criticized because it is inconsistent with the mainstream view that there is no scientific evidence that sexual orientation can be changed and that such attempts can only suppress homosexual attractions and not cure them and can also increase the risk of suicide."

Any input on making this more neutral Dave?
Like the pictures by the way, especially your gay kite lol

I took up real hobbies that take up a lot of time but Okedokie Jenova20 11:27, 29 February 2012 (UTC)
Nothing wrong with that. I moved house, which took up my time too! There were loads of kites at the festival that day, but the rainbow one was one of the best! WormTT · (talk) 11:29, 29 February 2012 (UTC)
Was it a specific kite festival or just a festival with kites? =P Jenova20 11:49, 29 February 2012 (UTC)
It was the Morecambe Kite festival, there must have been a couple hundred kites there. I even managed to get my old stunt kite out and have a go with that. Was a good day! WormTT · (talk) 12:05, 29 February 2012 (UTC)
Interesting. I'd never heard of a stunt kite before that.
Is this an annual thing then like a motor show where you all compare kites and look at custom parts/equipment?
Thanks Jenova20 12:21, 29 February 2012 (UTC)
You'd never heard of a stunt kite?!? Colloquially, it's basically just a kite where you control using two strings rather than one, so you have more control. The shape matters too. Having said that, I'm no kite expert, I just had one growing up. The Kite festival is an annual thing, where they fly lots of kites and have lots for sale. I noticed it on a website and decided to go. I'm sure there is lots of customisation out there, but I didn't see it! WormTT · (talk) 12:24, 29 February 2012 (UTC)
Nope, seen them but always just assumed they were "kites" and that there wasn't a special name for them.
How many do you own? Jenova20 13:44, 29 February 2012 (UTC)
Um... 5, I think. But only one really. I got 3 on a cheap offer online and don't use them, and an old broken box kite. WormTT · (talk) 13:48, 29 February 2012 (UTC)
...Yeah, i wouldn't count the broken one lol
How is everything since i've been off anyway?

It's because of the bit that said "<nowiki>{{User:Worm That Turned/Adopt/MathewTownsend/Template}}<nowiki>" - it's terminated incorrectly and needed a "</nowiki>". WikiCup 2012 February newsletter

Round 1 is already over! The 64 highest scorers have progressed to round 2. Our highest scorer was Conradh na Gaeilge Grapple X (submissions), again thanks mostly to a swathe of good articles on The X-Files. In second place was United Kingdom Tigerboy1966 (submissions), thanks an impressive list of did you knows about racehorses. Both scored over 400 points. Following behind with over 300 points were Minnesota Ruby2010 (submissions), Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions), Wisconsin Miyagawa (submissions) and Scotland Casliber (submissions). February also saw the competition's first featured list: List of colleges and universities in North Dakota, from Minnesota Ruby2010 (submissions). At the other end of the scale, 11 points was enough to secure a place in this round, and some contestants with 10 points made it into the round on a tiebreaker. This is higher than the 8 points that were needed last year, but lower than the 20 points required the year before. The number of points required to progress to round 3 will be significantly higher.

The remaining contestants have been split into 8 pools of 8, named A through H. Round two will finish in two months time on 28 April, when the two highest scorers in each pool, as well as the next 16 highest scorers, will progress to round 3. The pools were entirely random, so while some pools may end up being more competitive than others, this is by chance rather than design.

The judges would like to point out two quick rules reminders. First, any content promoted during the interim period (that is, on or after 27 February) is eligible for points in round 2. Second, any content worked on significantly this year is eligible for points if promoted in this round. On a related note, if you are concerned that your nomination, be it at good article candidates, a featured process or anywhere else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which would otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. New Page Triage engagement strategy released

Hey guys!

I'm dropping you a note because you filled out the New Page Patrol survey, and indicated you'd be interested in being contacted about follow-up work. This is to notify you that we've finally released both the initial documentation about the project and also the engagement strategy, which sets out how we plan to work with the community on this. Please give both a read, and leave any comments or suggestions you have on the talkpage, on my talkpage, or in my inbox - okeyes@wikimedia.org.

It's awesome to finally get to start work on this! :). Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 01:58, 3 March 2012 (UTC)

Editor review, RfA

Hi, Worm That Turned! I've posted a review notice on "Editor Review," to see about how ready I am for adminship. I saw your name on the list of RfA nominators; could you check out how you think I'm doing in regard to becoming an admin in the future? dci | TALK 00:25, 4 March 2012 (UTC)

As you are probably aware...

...I am looking for a new mentor. I have had you suggested by Noformation and I have noticed you have a rather decent track record of mentorship. Would you consider taking me in as a mentoree? Barts1a / What did I actually do right? / What did I do wrong this time? 08:11, 5 March 2012 (UTC)

Probably aware? Nah, I keep away from ANI. The place is a hole. Let me have a bit of a look. What would you be after in mentorship? Something formal, running through my adoption school at User:Worm That Turned/Adopt or something less formal, where you pop over and ask questions when you need it? If you're after me regularly reviewing your contributions in general, I am unlikely to have time, though I would be able to review specific contributions, like articles you want to create or anything else. I'll let you know if I can take you on, if you let me know what you're after
Finally regarding blocking, I'm an admin, so rather than threatening to block you, I'd actually do it :P I have blocked my proteges in the past - but only when they're actually being disruptive. I'd have probably given you a right telling off for incivility, but you were right about the copyright violation. Interestingly, a similar situation is something I felt strongly enough about to comment on it during a wikibreak, so I do see where you're coming from. WormTT · (talk) 08:36, 5 March 2012 (UTC)
Sadly it seems to be becoming a rather common thing nowadays. I would like something more formal and running through your adoption school. I fell that having an admin as a mentor is good because it shows they know what they're on about. And I noticed the indef blocked proteges and agree with each block. It must be a tough call to make! Barts1a / What did I actually do right? / What did I do wrong this time? 09:53, 5 March 2012 (UTC)
I can guarantee it's not fun, but I do put strong rationales down when I make a block, plus I seem to have a lot more patience than some other admins - so it shouldn't be too bad. I'm sure I can manage to put you through the whole school without too much difficulty, and it has the added bonus that you'll get a handful of barnstars too! I'll set you up with your own lesson page now, and you can make any changes you want to announce me as your new mentor. I've also got a few questions to ask you, which I'll do on the lesson talk page. WormTT · (talk) 10:19, 5 March 2012 (UTC)

Reworded the leading 2 paragraphs and put the claims presented as facts in brackets. Can you check my recent revisions and let me know what you think. Thanks Dave Jenova20 13:54, 5 March 2012 (UTC)

I don't like them to be honest, they don't seem neutral at all. For example, "attempt to" is a way of introducing an opinion, implying that Wikipedia holds a view on the matter. Similarly, "all but 2" could even be regarded as a BLP violation. You can do better than that! WormTT · (talk) 14:00, 5 March 2012 (UTC)
I didn't think you would have a problem with "attempt to" since not having it implies the change is possible against the evidence offered in this and the conversion therapy article.
And would you also consider this reliable as saying suicide attempts increase during conversion therapy or would i need the original?: http://www.ecinc.org/Records/rec_winter2012.htm
There's results out there because there's a lot of studies done, i'm just not sure what counts exactly.
Thanks Jenova20 14:03, 5 March 2012 (UTC)
"attempt to" seems fair to me Dave since even NARTH (another one of these ex-gay groups) has claimed it's not possible to change orientation.
Aswell as mainstream scientific evidence, countless studies, etc.
The Bible can't really be used as evidence over those on Wikipedia can it? Jenova20 14:08, 5 March 2012 (UTC)
(edit conflict)I agree with the point of view that they are attempting to, but it's not neutral. The fact is that HA practises conversion therapy to change the orientation. That is verifiable, neutral and correct. Whether they succeed is dealt with by the following lines, stating that this is against current mainstream scientific thought. Neutrality is paramount on WP - even if we hold a point of view.
As for the source, I'm not happy with it as they clearly are not independent of the topic - I'd like to see where they're getting the information from. WormTT · (talk) 14:11, 5 March 2012 (UTC)
PS did you read the link to WP:WEASEL I left? WormTT · (talk) 14:12, 5 March 2012 (UTC)
I understand Weasel and tried challenging what i saw as weasel words/statements.
I'll give it another go. And i agree with "attempt to", i'll change it back.
Maybe a case of not really reading what i've changed to in line with policy.
Thanks , gimme a minute to see what i can do Jenova20 14:27, 5 March 2012 (UTC)

I'm kinda struggling with it as i think it looks neutral now, whereas before it tried to state something many would claim impossible:

  • "Homosexuals Anonymous (HA) is an "ex-gay" group which practices conversion therapy to attempt to change the sexual orientation of homosexual clients"
That seems neutral to me (granted you have a lot more experience on this than me).
And if it was changed back to:
  • "Homosexuals Anonymous (HA) is an "ex-gay" group which practices conversion therapy to change the sexual orientation of homosexual clients"
That is what HA say but not what we would since if it was changed to:
  • "Homosexuals Anonymous (HA) is an "ex-gay" group which practices conversion therapy to turn people into chickens"
Wouldn't WP change that to:
  • "Homosexuals Anonymous (HA) is an "ex-gay" group which practices conversion therapy to "turn people into chickens""
or
  • "Homosexuals Anonymous (HA) is an "ex-gay" group which practices conversion therapy to attempt to turn people into chickens"
Hope that makes sense and that you can clear it up for me Jenova20 14:37, 5 March 2012 (UTC)
The thing is that "to attempt to" serves no purpose except to lead the reader. In your example, yes, I would say
  • "Homosexuals Anonymous (HA) is an "ex-gay" group which practices conversion therapy to turn people into chickens"
We're not saying that it works or not, but that's what they're doing. adding "to attempt to" is as bad as
  • "Homosexuals Anonymous (HA) is an "ex-gay" group which successfully uses conversion therapy to turn people into chickens"
Both lead the reader in a way that removes the neutrality. The article explains that mainstream scientific view is that it's not possible and give sources for the reader to check against. WormTT · (talk) 14:50, 5 March 2012 (UTC)
Ahhh!, you succeed again in this one.
I'll revert that.
I'm a bit bothered by the 2 others you mentioned though, can you expand on that?
http://wthrockmorton.com/2011/09/26/narth-report-suicide-attempts-increase-during-sexual-orientation-change-therapy/#more-10298
That's a blog so doesn't count right? I know there's exceptions but...
Thanks a lot Jenova20 15:01, 5 March 2012 (UTC)
"All but 2" of his interviewed clients is not the same as all but 2 of his clients. He could have had 1000s. I just don't see what it's adding, especially as it's alledged and it doesn't say what "sexual relations" means.
As for the other, it's a group which is definitely not independent of the topic referring to a blog. I'd say no to both really. It's not regarding HA, just conversion therapy, and there's much better sources on the article for that. WormTT · (talk) 15:21, 5 March 2012 (UTC)
I added "who were later intereviewed"
Next problem?
Thanks Jenova20 15:29, 5 March 2012 (UTC)
I tweaked it - as you can see :) WormTT · (talk) 16:00, 5 March 2012 (UTC)
And i retweaked it =P
You missed a word from what isaw so i worked off that.
Can you see an easy way to reword this?:
  • HA uses a "14 Step" program[8] developed by Colin Cook based on his own struggle with his sexuality.[9] Cook and Douglas McIntyre, who has worked through his own struggle with same-sex attractions,[10] founded HA in 1980 with financial support from the Seventh-day Adventist denomination.
Can we cut that in size somehow as struggle with sexuality is in there twice in just one paragraph and it seems a bit...(unsure how to finish that)
Thanks Jenova20 16:10, 5 March 2012 (UTC)
Will have to look later, stuck in a meeting... WormTT · (talk) 16:13, 5 March 2012 (UTC)
Cool, i got around the suicide thing with a reword aswell.
It's in the article Jenova20 16:59, 5 March 2012 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) Synonyms for struggle: battle, fight, wrestle, grapple. Some of those would require slight rewording such as "who has grappled with his own same-sex attractions". Cloveapple (talk) 17:16, 5 March 2012 (UTC)
Nice work, i'm actually trying to squash it into one section though rather than use a different word for each.
If you can get a nice reworked version for us to look at or you have your own ideas then stalk away =]
Thanks Jenova20 17:27, 5 March 2012 (UTC)
(edit conflict)What about, "HA, which was founded in 1980 with financial support from the Seventh-day Adventist denomination by Colin Cook and Douglas McIntyre, who had worked through their own struggle with their sexuality,[10] uses a "14 Step" program[8] developed by Colin Cook based on his experiences.[9] "? Does strike me as having overly long parentheses, but nevertheless--Gilderien Talk|Contribs 19:39, 5 March 2012 (UTC)
I'm not a big fan of that one since "who had worked through their own struggle with their sexuality" implies they are cured and Colin clearly wasn't and supposedly had 12 relapses (that we know of), where he fell off the wagon and onto another man =P
Maybe i should just leave that section how it is.
Thanks for trying Jenova20 14:45, 6 March 2012 (UTC)
Hi! I came here to do something totally different (which I'm still going to do) but then I got drawn into your struggle with struggles. Could I try to help?
"Colin Cook and Douglas McIntyre, who had both struggled with same-sex attractions,[10] founded HA in 1980 with financial support from the Seventh-day Adventist denomination. HA uses a "14 Step" program[8] developed by Colin Cook based on his own experiences.[9]"

Another supplicant :)

Hello Dave, or Worm if you prefer, I'm Kim :)

I've started getting properly into Wikipedia in the last few weeks. I can feel addiction merrily chomping down on me and I think it's high time I found a mentor to direct my energy. Now, you are officially Good At Thistm, but it's more than that. I stalked you a little (forgive me) and checked out some of your conflict resolution history, and realised that you take Assuming Good Faith and elevate it to a fine art. Although I love to help people, I find I have trouble maintaining my patience and a cool head when others pull their weapons out. I pull mine out too, and then it's very difficult to get me to budge from my position. So I am not only looking for lessons (although I would like that too, for the knowledge!) - I'm seeking someone I can look up to as a role model in the long term. I'd be very proud if that could be you.

Unfortunately, although you are listed in the Adopters list as available, I saw that your user page says you are not seeking new adoptees, and your talk page also mentions how busy you are. Still, I reckoned the worst you can say is no. :) On the other hand, I am not in any great rush and perfectly willing to wait until you have a vacancy, and I hope I wouldn't be a particularly 'high-maintenance' student.

In other news, my heart is in the West Country too... Exeter graduate, still feel more at home in Devon than anywhere else in the country. You wouldn't catch me drinking Doom Bar though. Blech. Cider please! Thank you for your time. ~ Kimelea (talk) 16:41, 6 March 2012 (UTC)

vandal attack

Hi,

I got attacked by a vandal yesterday. Fortunately I'd read your newest lesson for me and I left four warnings (which he kept deleting) and reported him to the vandal page. Another editor had already blocked him, but only for 31 hours. Maybe that will do it, as it was an school ip. MathewTownsend (talk) 14:22, 8 March 2012 (UTC)

Well done! Unfortunately it does happen on wikipedia. 31 hours is pretty standard for IPs, especially school IPs. The theory is that they will be blocked for the rest of the school day plus another school day (7h) which should be enough to deter them from walking out of the classroom and coming straight back the next day. WormTT · (talk) 14:45, 8 March 2012 (UTC)
  • Re my TEST. I'm worried about the time limit. Supposed something comes up and I have to leave the test for a while? I could probably return the same day if that happened, but if the time is too strict...? MathewTownsend (talk) 22:01, 8 March 2012 (UTC)
it's not that strict :) see what you can do WormTT · (talk) 22:32, 8 March 2012 (UTC)
well, I'm sort of wearing out today. Should I wait till tomorrow to start? Or is it ok to spread it over a two days? MathewTownsend (talk) 22:46, 8 March 2012 (UTC)
oh I though you realised, you get a whole week to do it! So far everyone's managed to do it in that time, but there's no rush :) WormTT · (talk) 22:51, 8 March 2012 (UTC)
That's great. I guess I have test anxiety! I won't worry then. Thanks, MathewTownsend (talk) 22:55, 8 March 2012 (UTC)

Do you think if you were to adopt me that I would benefit at becoming a better editor or do you think it is unnecessary?—cyberpower (Chat)(WP Edits: 521,280,954) 00:37, 9 March 2012 (UTC)

I'm not Worm, but I think you would benefit from it, yes. One slight problem is that Worm has so many adoption requests at the moment that he's fairly unlikely to have time to help. --Demiurge1000 (talk) 20:40, 10 March 2012 (UTC)
Demiurge has summed up my thoughts exactly. I've noticed you around a few times, and thought that you'd be make a great candidate for mentorship - I know you haven't caused lots of issues or anything like that, but I do think that you could do with a little guidance on what areas would benefit most from your help. Having said that, I'm not sure how much good my mentoring style would be to you and I think that you may want to ask around, see if you can find another long standing editor to help you out. You're always welcome to come to me to ask any questions, should you want to - but since I don't see that I would be the best mentor for you and I already have too many mentees and more requests (see below), I don't think I'll be in the best position to help out. WormTT · (talk) 08:29, 12 March 2012 (UTC)
I am open to adoption. Please let me know if there is a spot available.—cyberpower (Chat)(WP Edits: 521,926,947) 12:49, 12 March 2012 (UTC)
I will get back to you when I'm a little bit less busy then. By the way, I see there's another editor complaining about your signature on your talk page... at what point would you say that it might be problematic? WormTT · (talk) 12:52, 12 March 2012 (UTC)
I'm not sure what he quite means by bombastic. I a signature is supposed to identify one's self and this complaint isn't like the complaints I have received in the past. Last time when editors were complaining about the colors I considered that problematic and I applied changes to it.—cyberpower (Chat)(WP Edits: 521,928,584) 13:02, 12 March 2012 (UTC)
Well, I read bombastic as "over the top", I think it's a combination of the striking colours and the length (esp the total number of edits) - just my opinion. Which I've said before. WormTT · (talk) 13:05, 12 March 2012 (UTC)
If I get more complaints, I'll change it.—cyberpower (Chat)(WP Edits: 521,966,102) 17:21, 12 March 2012 (UTC)
Um... how many more complaints exactly? Every single one of your talk page archives have at least 1 complaint about your signature. There's about 8 or 9 complaints I can find! You make changes, but not taking on board the larger issues, it's still garish, it's still too long. WormTT · (talk) 17:31, 12 March 2012 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) Hello, I wouldn't make a complaint, but I'm not a fan of the sig either. 1) Very, very long. 2) The editcount figure shows total edits to EN by every user ever, I assume, at the time you post it - but it redirects to your personal contribs, which I find a bit misleading. 3) The colour-coding thing to show your availability is a neat idea, but because it doesn't update once posted, it is not very useful for seeing whether you're online. If you're signing something, you're online! If people need more info they can go to your user page.
I suppose what it comes down to is that a fancy sig is a bit like decorating your house with flashy Christmas lights. No matter how much you like it, it does you no favours if your neighbours start a petition. Ask yourself who you're doing it for. My Humble Opinion, heed or ignore as you like. :) ~ Kimelea (talk) 19:05, 12 March 2012 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) I don't understand why Cyberpower678 wants to have such an over-the-top signature. It's hard to read so I just skip over it. So he's saying that he has over 500,000 edits? Isn't that kind of a meaningless number? MathewTownsend (talk) 16:28, 13 March 2012 (UTC)
No, he's saying that WP has a total of 521million edits... but he's in the process of changing it, so don't worry. WormTT · (talk) 16:32, 13 March 2012 (UTC)

My article

Do you think my nawton school article is readu to be moved into the mainspace to be developed yet as i have added basic content and structure (With formatting help from Gilderien)? --Turbo566 talk 08:11, 9 March 2012 (UTC)

Right. There's a few issues with the article at User:Turbo566/Nawton primary school at the moment, perhaps you'll want to have a look at them?
  1. Primary schools aren't inherently notable and are generally deleted at AfD. To stop this from happening, you'd have to prove that this school is notable under the general notability guidelines, and that means that you'll have to find a fair number of independent sources which discuss the school specifically. Not just mention it, but actually discuss it.
  2. The image that you've got up there is an example image. You'll want to remove that before going live, possibly replacing it with a free image of the school, but definitely removing it.
  3. The reference is unformated. Try using the {{cite}} template, adding more information in, like when it was accessed, who publishes it and so on.
  4. It seems to have 4 names! Nawton Primary School, Nawton primary school, Nawton Comprehensive Primary School and Nawton Community primary school
  5. It doesn't read particularly well at the moment. Remember, you're writing in an encyclopedic manner, keeping to the facts and trying to be succinct. That means that repeating the same thing isn't particularly good. For example The entire second sentence could be removed by writing
Nawton Primary School (or Nawton Comprehensive Primary School) is a comprehensive school located in Nawton, North Yorkshire.
  6. The titles need to follow wikipedia standards (capital at the start, and that's it)
  7. You have an empty section.
Sooo there's quite a bit more that needs doing before it gets moved to the main space, but keep at it, it may be a great article one day! WormTT · (talk) 16:10, 12 March 2012 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) Umm, there seems to be a problem here: it isn't a comprehensive school! That's a word used for secondary / high / senior schools (I suppose pretty well all primary schools are comprehensive in effect, in that they have pupils from all abilities, but there aren't any selective alternatives except some competitive fee-paying schools with entry exams). What it calls iself on the school website is "Nawton Community Primary School" (and also "Nawton CP School", another title from which we'll need a redirect). Turbo, you need to be careful to read the words of the sources you use. Good luck in your editing - though, as Worm suggests above, we may not be able to have a whole article about the school, and it might be better to add the info to the Nawton, North Yorkshire article. There's a free-to-use picture of the school at http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2756771, though it doesn't seem to have been copied into Commons as yet. PamD 16:27, 12 March 2012 (UTC)
You see, this is why talk page stalkers are helpful. When your brain has gone soft from a long day, they still spot the obvious mistakes! Turbo, don't be disheartened, the information can go somewhere on the encyclopedia, but perhaps a new article might not be the best spot. WormTT · (talk) 16:30, 12 March 2012 (UTC)
Actually, looking at the Nawton article, it could do with some expanding! WormTT · (talk) 16:31, 12 March 2012 (UTC)
Thank you for the criticism, i will keep working! (and probably just add it to the nawton article instead as the school is just a school in the middle of nowhere) --95.149.232.243 (talk) 20:16, 12 March 2012 (UTC)

User pages

Thank you for making an alteration on my user page. However, I thought it was against Wikipedia polices for anyone to edit user page that wasn't their own, regardless of admin status - unless there was offensive material that warranted such action. I'm slightly concerned that a user to whom I haven't come in contact with before has visited my user page and took it upon themselves to edit it. WesleyMouse 13:12, 12 March 2012 (UTC)

(edit conflict)I think you'll have a hard time finding any policy that actually says that an editor cannot edit another user's page, it'd be wholly against the spirit of a wiki. All contributions are released under WP:CC-BY-SA, so do be careful about giving the impression of ownership. How I got there, if you're interested, was through User talk:Hghyux, where you suggested he used your Barnometer. I thought it was an interesting idea and went to your userpage. I saw a way to improve (in my opinion) and that's what I did (as you'll see in my edit summary.) If you don't like it, revert it, it's your userpage. WormTT · (talk) 13:23, 12 March 2012 (UTC)

If I may ask a question; I have noticed some pages that have their barnstars/awards in some sort of a "wow" style. Not sure how to describe it really, each award is set within a table of boxes. I've tried several times to do this, but the end result is my main page looking all higgledy-piggledy. I've also noticed a lot of people talking about adoption too, and notice you do adopting. Is there a specific timeline in which adoption coursework has to be done by? WesleyMouse 13:19, 12 March 2012 (UTC)

If you can point me to one of the userpages with the "wow" style, I'd be happy to try and help you recreate it. I just display mine at User:Worm That Turned/Awards. Regarding adoption, I'm afraid I'm a touch busy at the moment (I've got too many people on and a queue of people trying to sign up!) but you could always go to the list of adopters and see if there's anyone else who might be able to help you! WormTT · (talk) 13:23, 12 March 2012 (UTC)
A Personal Thank You Award
I would like to thank Worm That Turned for fixing my Barnstar wall of fame section, and giving it a well earned improvement. WesleyMouse 13:35, 12 March 2012 (UTC)
You are, of course, welcome. WormTT · (talk) 13:38, 12 March 2012 (UTC)
(edit conflict) I won't get in trouble for making a personalized award like that above would I? I know it isn't one on the Barnstars list, but I couldn't find one that had the personal touch to it, and that design (except the image) is my own choice. Also, you asked for links to show the wow style I have seen for displaying awards received. Here is one version and I have seen a really smart looking user page too belonging to the same person, but of course I don't want to be copying designs of users. If I were to have a personal design to my user page and/or awards page, it would be to highlight the fact that I'll be a volunteer at the London 2012 Paralympics, so sporty/Olympic/Greek theme would be along the lines. WesleyMouse 13:43, 12 March 2012 (UTC)
Not at all. I've got a personal barnstar that I give out to people completing my course User:Worm That Turned/Adopt/Barnstar, and it's so clever you can give out parts of it at a time! You're allowed to create anything you like like that as long as it's not disruptive (effectively likely to bother people) and using content that's released under license.
As for AxG's awards, he's quite cleverly used a set of <gallery></gallery> tags. How about you have a go creating something using those tags at User:Wesley Mouse/Awards, which you can transclude in. I'll keep an eye on the page, and if you get stuck, I can give you a hand. There's some help at Wikipedia:PIC#Galleries if you want some inspiration. WormTT · (talk) 14:00, 12 March 2012 (UTC)
Oooo thank you ever so much for pointing me in the right direction with all this information. The link you provided has definitely inspired me now to get creative and jazz up my page. Am I permitted to design a few images via photoshop and upload them into public domain, for the purpose of incorporating them into the artwork design, similar to what AxG has done? WesleyMouse 16:50, 12 March 2012 (UTC)
Indeed you can. I'd recommend you upload them to Commons, but as long as they are your own work, you can upload them. WormTT · (talk) 17:25, 12 March 2012 (UTC)
Woohoo I've designs my own logo-style image, and managed to design my user page, headers, and other pages too. You are a good teacher when it comes to things like that - let me know what you think - and once again Thank You! WesleyMouse 20:35, 12 March 2012 (UTC)

Return from absence

Dear Worm That Turned, I apologise that I seemingly disappeared mid-adoption, it must have seemed mightily ungrateful; there were a series of events which conspired to make my free time scarcer and all the more valuable and wikipedia was somewhat forgotten. However, following a recent resurgence in my own in interest in editing I am back and wanted to let you know given how much of my knowledge of wiki's workings I owe to you, and to perhaps finish my adoption course! My name was Reichsfurst but I have changed it following possible associations of the name which were wholly unintended. Yours, Trumpkinius (talk) 19:37, 12 March 2012 (UTC)

Good Article

Hi Dave, just wondering how I get someone to assess an article on the "Good Article" criteria? It's the Citroën C3 Picasso article by the way. Thanks Jenova20 16:08, 13 March 2012 (UTC)

Well, once you are happy that it meets the Good article criteria, then you can follow the instructions at the good article nomination page. It's fairly simple, involving dropping a template on the talk page. Having said that, I'm not sure that article quite meets good article criteria... I'd expect there to be a lot more information... is there really that little to write on that car? WormTT · (talk) 16:14, 13 March 2012 (UTC)
No, there's loads more, i just wanted something to work towards rather than waffling on and picking the information i think suits the article.
This way i can improve the article and be productively working towards a Good Article.
Thanks Jenova20 16:20, 13 March 2012 (UTC)
Ah, that's a very good idea. Well, generally you're looking for the information to be broad, accurate and well written. When you've done a bit more and you start to get stuck, why not have a chat with another of my mentees, User:MathewTownsend. He's reviewed over 70 Good articles and may be able to offer you some pointers. WormTT · (talk) 16:23, 13 March 2012 (UTC)

a while back we communicated about an new wikipedia page for USHC (see below) I have asked one of my students to start working on such a page you can access it at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:Articles_for_creation/United_States_Housing_Corporation

Could you please let us know if this is ok and what can we do improve it / publish.

Thanks

Hi Hockney. Further to our chat on IRC, I just thought I'd leave you a quick welcome to Wikipedia - which it looks like you've missed out on! Just to let you know a little bit about me, I'm actually one of the online ambassadors at Wikipedia, so I spend quite a lot of time working with university students and helping them with Wikipedia projects. I can tell you a little more about the scheme if you are curious.

In the mean time, I'll look forward to your article on USHC. Perhaps if you start the draft in your userspace - User:Hockney/USHC would be a good place to create it. That way, you will minimal danger of it being deleted as you are working on it. I'll be around if you need any help, just leave me a message or email me. WormTT · (talk) 19:46, 3 October 2011 (UTC)

Better Idea

Want to work on a different article instead and get away from cars. You work on things you have an interest in so i had a bit of inspiration there and found this - Hurst Street. It's one of the worst articles on Wikipedia and i visit the place at least once every 3 weeks. I could do it up, get some more information and references, even a better picture. But...i would need to rename it to Birmingham gay village, which is the more common name than Hurst Street and would give much more information on the area. What do you think? Jenova20 11:44, 15 March 2012 (UTC)

Well, I think it's a great idea to work on, certainly something that could do with some expansion. As for the rename, does Birmingham gay village refer to that street only, or some surrounding ones? - It might be that you could create a completely new article on the area. How common is the term? I'd like to see some evidence of what the "common name" is before a move happened. WormTT · (talk) 11:50, 15 March 2012 (UTC)
How's the Birmingham City Site for reliable?: [1]
"Hurst street" covers almost half of the clubs, "the village" covers all.
Thanks Jenova20 16:42, 15 March 2012 (UTC)
It would be like referring to the nearby Chinese Quarter by the street name only even though it covers more than one.
An article on the gay village would include Hurst St so a merge into one article makes more sense.
Thanks Jenova20 16:47, 15 March 2012 (UTC)

AN section on TT

Sorry. Misclicked an early enter key and didn't finish my comment. Templates in titles don't work for going directly to the section from the watchlist. That's the only reason I edited your entry. --OnoremDil 13:44, 15 March 2012 (UTC)

A user is continuing to mark major edits as minor and edit war (And smells like a sock to boot...)

Please see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/MjSoldierBoy

I noticed that after ADKIc3mAnX stopped editing the article this user seems to be an SPA for then they started trying to insert almost EXACTLY the same content! I can hear quacking from that account from a mile away! Barts1a / Talk to me / Help me improve 03:11, 16 March 2012 (UTC)

Doesn't look like a sock to me, but does look possibly like edit warring by proxy and appears to be problematic . I really don't have time to look into it much further, due to other commitments, who do you normally go to with problems like this? WormTT · (talk) 12:18, 16 March 2012 (UTC)
I don't have a go to person. Since you're an admin I decided to get in contact with you. Barts1a / Talk to me / Help me improve 12:59, 16 March 2012 (UTC)
I am an admin, yes, but not all admins deal with the same stuff. For example, I do very little at UAA, I hardly even know the rules there. WormTT · (talk) 13:07, 16 March 2012 (UTC)

Favour to ask

Hi Dave, can i ask you to do me a non controversial move with your admin powers? I'd like to have Birmingham gay village moved to Birmingham Gay Village and then deleted, leaving only Bimringham Gay Village Is that ok? Thanks Jenova20 10:14, 16 March 2012 (UTC)

Well, let's see. There's no reason to delete it, it's not an implausible redirect and they're both redirecting to Hurst Street. I'd suggest you just go an create another redirect for the moment. I'm still unsure about the entire gay village being set in one street - have a look at Liverpool gay quarter for what I'd be looking for in the article. Oh and the source you gave me, I'd already seen, I think we need a bit more! WormTT · (talk) 10:24, 16 March 2012 (UTC)
The whole village isn't on Hurst Street, that's the point i'm making. The current article has only one reference and talks about the gay village more than hurst street even though only around a third of the gay village is even on Hurst Street.
The current article is a farce and needs a delete either way. Thanks Jenova20 23:58, 16 March 2012 (UTC)
I'll even chuck in WP:Coatrack for good measure. Have a nice weekend Dave Jenova20 23:58, 16 March 2012 (UTC)
In which case the best thing to do is start the Birmingham Gay Village article, point Birmingham gay village to it, and link it through from Hurst Street. The current article looks fine to me, but if you have a valid reason for deletion, you know where to go. WormTT · (talk) 10:46, 19 March 2012 (UTC)
I'll start working on the article. Feel free to help out or chuck in contributions and criticism.
I'll put in my userspace with the other projects still in progress.

Cluebot III

What kind of problems exactly. I set the parameters to archive exactly like Miszabot III was to archive for you. I would like to know what the problems are because I set up Cluebot III on my page. I set it up for you without asking because I wanted to help out with archiving.—cyberpower TalkOnline 22:42, 16 March 2012 (UTC)

The style of archiving is different - it indexes all the pages to a cluebot subpage. That may speed up searching, but it's horribly unflexible if you want to change your archiving. I originally had my archiving by date, then decided that it wasn't appropriate as some months had lots and others little, so I decided to change it. Cluebot's inflexibility didn't let me do that, so I switched to Misza.
The thing is, you know I'm technically minded. You know I understand archiving and templates and bots. You know I've been here long enough to evaluate options and make a choice. I find it astounding that you'd go onto my page and change my archiving, without asking. Remember what we were saying about patience on your page? I don't mind if my page isn't archived. I can live with a couple of old threads for a few weeks. I could even archive them manually, but I don't want a different bot archiving my page. I'd suggest you undo BWilkin's one too - favours are great if someone asks for it or is even aware, but not so much when done behind their backs - especially if it's something they want. WormTT · (talk) 23:16, 16 March 2012 (UTC)
See User:ClueBot III/Detailed Indices/User talk:Worm That Turned/TheArchives2009. Think about it this way. If there was no differnce between the two, why would we have two? WormTT · (talk) 23:21, 16 March 2012 (UTC)
(edit conflict)Cluebot III can archive like Miszabot III. The setup in yours was set to exactly archive like Miszabot III but, OK. I respect that. I didn't think it would harm anything.—cyberpower SpoutOnline 23:25, 16 March 2012 (UTC)
Is that so? In which case, why all of a sudden have you got a set of indices. The code is different, it does things differently. I didn't get on with it - and I would rather manually archive or have a few extra threads than change. I simply don't want too many archive pages or it being indexed in that manner. WormTT · (talk) 10:44, 19 March 2012 (UTC)
Is there anything important about that index, because Miszabot doesn't do that so I ignore those indices while I use Cluebot or is there some hidden purpose to them?—cyberpower ChatLimited Access 12:18, 19 March 2012 (UTC)
Well, I believe they allow cluebot to index your data so, you can search it easier. However, if you ever want to change your archives (from one format to another) they can be a right royal pain in the rear. You needn't worry about them for your code - safely ignore them, I'm just pointing out they're not exactly the same. WormTT · (talk) 12:25, 19 March 2012 (UTC)
Well I'm not changing in the future so no issues for me. I will respect your wishes nonetheless and not change you archive setup. I've already set up Cluebot III for other people though. Now back to writing my bot.—cyberpower ChatLimited Access 12:29, 19 March 2012 (UTC)
As long as you ask them first, it's all good. WormTT · (talk) 12:30, 19 March 2012 (UTC)
I have. I did it for User:Jimbo Wales, User:Androzaniamy and User:Edinburgh Wanderer so far.—cyberpower ChatLimited Access 12:32, 19 March 2012 (UTC)
But remember to ask other users before you change their parameters - Amy seemed understandably taken-aback at the change from 60 days to 3. (And I rather thought that when she said "Can someone please put it back to how the other one ran" she may have wanted the 3-60 days-old stuff unarchived). But I'll keep off her page. DeFacto wouldn't put down the stick. There was consensus at the page, yet he brought it to different forums over and over until he had to be blocked for disruption. I'd rather it didn't happen, and perhaps a topic ban would have served the purpose, but it looked like a good block to me. WormTT · (talk) 13:35, 19 March 2012 (UTC)
Understandable...On a side-note have you seen this essay? Wikipedia:How many legs does a horse have?

Closing a Requested Move

How do i do it and merge the content of Straight pride into Gay Pride without copying and pasting? Thanks Jenova20 17:27, 19 March 2012 (UTC)

Um, you don't! For one thing, you've commented on the discussion, making it inappropriate for you to close. For another, there's more people opposing the merge than supporting - again inappropriate to close as a merge! Consensus is king, remember? WormTT · (talk) 08:31, 20 March 2012 (UTC)
Ah...I didn't know that. And the oppose votes are higher now.
OK...how do i get someone independent like the Admin to discuss the move then, like a third opinion?
Thanks Jenova20 09:12, 20 March 2012 (UTC)
Would it also be canvassing to post about the Requested move on the Gay Pride and/or Homophobia articles since it concerns both? Jenova20 09:20, 20 March 2012 (UTC)
Yep, it would. Uninvolved editors can already see the stuff at the requested moves page, you've already got outside opinions... you just don't like them :P Oh and it's already there on Gay Pride. Right at the top of the article. WormTT · (talk) 09:28, 20 March 2012 (UTC)
Err... it's not. It should be. The same template that's at the top of the Straight Pride article. WormTT · (talk) 09:33, 20 March 2012 (UTC)
Well you're right that i don't like the result. The opposing views are just voting and not following any policies, that's how i interpreted the rules on a requested move, it does state quite clearly that it's not a vote and that we have to use policy to back our opinion.
That's why i'd like someone independent of either Wikiproject to look in and say their bit.
And i'm unsure how to add that tag to Gay Pride.
Thanks Jenova20 10:04, 20 March 2012 (UTC)
It's getting a bit uncomfortable for me to even comment on there now lol.
Might try and keep my head down for a bit and lay low... Jenova20 13:17, 20 March 2012 (UTC)

Personal Attacks

What if I don't like the person? How will they know that I do not like them?! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Justgravy (talkcontribs) 16:41, 20 March 2012 (UTC)

Hi Worm

Are you on line now? I'd like to discuss something with you. Also, the hardest part of the "test" is finding articles that I'm capable of cleaning up. Most require being able to add references that I can't find. Also, on the vandal patrol, I almost never revert using "vandal" unless it is very very very clear. I prefer to give a reason instead and use the "undo". So I hope the ones I selected are appropriate. MathewTownsend (talk) 16:40, 15 March 2012 (UTC)

I'm becoming very demoralized, as I have hunted all day for an article to cleanup. All of them I've come across have hopeless problems. (Otherwise, I think I've completed everything.) Your demoralized mentee, MathewTownsend (talk) 23:31, 15 March 2012 (UTC)
Well, I would consider making any change that is good enough to remove any cleanup tag counts... referencing is one option, but so is copy editing, wikifying, or any of the other tags found at WP:BACKLOG... WormTT · (talk) 12:09, 16 March 2012 (UTC)
I looked and looked and looked through WP:BACKLOG, spent hours. Couldn't even find a reference to add or an orphan to save. I think that category has been combed through already for anything salvageable. Wikifying, according to the directions is not just adding links (which the articles have anyway, but making sure it's referenced, structured correctly, etc. I'll look some more today, but I ended up thinking most articles are a hopeless mess. I couldn't find one article that I could fix one tag. And I look through hundreds. I started looking through Random articles, and just found lots that needed tagging! MathewTownsend (talk) 13:13, 16 March 2012 (UTC)
If you're having that much trouble, don't stress too much, it's not the end of the world! One of the easiest ones there is categorisation... WormTT · (talk) 13:17, 16 March 2012 (UTC)
I think I'm finished. (I'll be devastated if I fail! - so please give me a chance to fix any mistakes.) MathewTownsend (talk) 15:35, 16 March 2012 (UTC)
Ha! no no, you don't get to fix mistakes on this one :P I'll give you the weekend to double check anything (because I'm about to head off myself) and check it over on Monday. Most people don't fail, don't worry. WormTT · (talk) 15:38, 16 March 2012 (UTC)

hey, Worm. Did I pass the test? Your adoptee, MathewTownsend (talk) 13:54, 21 March 2012 (UTC)

has it been a week already? Sorry! I'll mark it now. WormTT · (talk) 13:56, 21 March 2012 (UTC)

Welcome to the Teahouse!

Hi Worm! Thank you for signing up to be a future host at the Teahouse. Well, great news - the future is here, we'd love you to be a Teahouse host! During this pilot time, Teahouse hosts do more than just ask questions - they invite new users to the Teahouse and track those invitations, they also provide input and insight into the development of the Teahouse. A few things I'd love to see you do as a Teahouse host:

  • First, declare your Hostness! Add yourself to the Host page! This page is where new editors and your fellow hosts can learn about you and reach out. By signing up here you declare that you know how to serve up a great cup of tea. Add yourself here.
  • Learn more about your responsibilities as a host. Teahouse hosts have certain responsibilities during this pilot. If you feel you can't meet them, perhaps a host role isn't for you during this important pilot.
  • Invite new users with our invite guide. Aside from answering questions, the most important thing we need you to do as a host is to invite new users. Please follow these steps and invite as many as you can to experience the Teahouse. Also, please document your experience in the spreadsheet link provided on that page!
  • Visit the tips page. The tips page provides you some basic tips on how to engage with visitors at the Teahouse. We have a special way of doing things - unlike other areas of Wikipedia! (Such as greeting new editors with a simple "Hi!" and being as easy to understand and friendly as possible.)
  • Join the conversation by participating on the host lounge talk pages. We also have an IRC channel now for hosts to get to know one another, develop your skills, and eventually the channel will serve as an additional help space for new editors!
  • To visit the IRC channel: #wikipedia-teahouse connect (Feel free to ask me for help if you're having trouble connecting!)

I'm so happy that you volunteered to lend a hand at the Teahouse. I look forward to following your contributions and invitations, and your assistance in making the Teahouse a great and warm place for new Wikipedians. See you there :) Sarah (talk) 21:52, 20 March 2012 (UTC)

There is a question at the Teahouse you might have interest in...

Teahouse Talkback Template

Hi Worm! Thanks for answering questions at the Teahouse, as part of your role as a host, of course! I did notice that upon your response to TLBateson you didn't respond to her with a Teahouse talkback on her talk page. While we were lucky and she checked back for her response, most new editors don't know about the watchlist tool and have also proven to come back if we let them know we responded to their question. It's mentioned Host tips page I mentioned above and also on a general template collection we have that features all of our templates, thus far! I hope you find value and use in these :) Sarah (talk) 13:36, 21 March 2012 (UTC)

Ah blast, I knew there was something I was forgetting. WormTT · (talk) 13:37, 21 March 2012 (UTC)

Response to your reply to my feedback

Hello, it's MunkkyNotTrukk. Thank you very much for your answer to my feedback, and to answer your question, the page I was trying to contribute to was List of Characters in Transformers Prime. To be clear, I'm in no way claiming ownership of that article, I was simply trying to remove poor spelling and grammar, remove any unnecessary information and condense each character synopsis down into shorter, easier to read paragraphs, because I feel they're a bit too long. However, any edit I make is deleted after a few days, and the article is returned t exactly, word for word, the way it was before I edited it, so I suspect that whoever wrote the article originally IS claiming ownership. Thank you once again for your time. MunkkyNotTrukk (talk) 20:22, 21 March 2012 (UTC)

A kitten for you!

Speedy Delete - not so speedy

Hello grand overseer of so much Wikipedia knowledge. Can i ask how long a speedy delete usually takes? I wasn't thinking it would be instantaneous but we're going on 2 hours now so i'm just interested on how big the wait is usually. Magic Hour (English band Cast album) Thanks Jenova20 16:15, 22 March 2012 (UTC)

Do you think combining Magic Hour and The Magic Hour would be controversial? They list a few of the same things and they're both disambig pages. I'd rather ask advice before i act on this. Jenova20 16:56, 22 March 2012 (UTC)

I was WP:Bold and combined them. It seemed pointless having 2 pages listing the same thing with the addition/deduction of the word "The" in the title. Jenova20 22:49, 22 March 2012 (UTC)

Mediator

We're gonna need someone to step in here. The page is changing drastically day to day and since you're my fave admin i'm giving you first refusal.[5] Thanks Jenova20 23:04, 22 March 2012 (UTC)

RS nit

Re Amy's answer on the RS pillar -- we both know easily accessible isn't a requirement for RS; not sure if you want to mention it or not:

  • reason not to: obviously wiki-policy is overwhelming so maybe it's too fine a point.
  • reason to: she might make a good faith but incorrect removal of someone's reliable but not easily accessible (e.g. a book)

(You're doing a good thing here). Nobody Ent 13:36, 23 March 2012 (UTC)

Good point, I had glossed over it - will make sure I mention that. I was quite impressed with her answers over all, I've had much worse ones! Oh and thanks! WormTT · (talk) 13:44, 23 March 2012 (UTC)

Wikibreak

I have three coursework deadlines coming up for next friday, so I cannot afford to be distracted by WP :/ . I have added wikibreak enforcer to my User:Gilderien/vector.js page. See you in a week :-) --Gilderien Talk|Contribs 18:47, 18 March 2012 (UTC)

Good luck with that! Glad to know you have your priorities right! WormTT · (talk) 10:41, 19 March 2012 (UTC)
I'm back. Yay.--Gilderien Talk|Contribs 21:32, 23 March 2012 (UTC)

Your former adoptee

User:MathewTownsend seems to be having a case of "I didn't hear that" (1) and deliberately misconstruing stuff (1, 2) for the Signpost writeup on Whistler's Mother, a painting which he doesn't think is iconic and has refused to budge from said position. The article has been given three citations to back up the fact (1, 2). Perhaps you could weigh in? Crisco 1492 (talk) 01:01, 25 March 2012 (UTC)

Teahouse host

Hey, you joined the Teahouse! I can't believe I missed that for three days. And the really surprising thing is they asked me before they asked you! How strange, you would have been the first choice if I was choosing hosts, given how you are the best adopter here. Hope we have a good time there together. Rcsprinter (speak) 17:44, 23 March 2012 (UTC)

Who said they asked you first ? I've only just had enough time for such things. WormTT · (talk) 08:44, 27 March 2012 (UTC)

North Pier

Hi there - sorry I didn't reply to your message earlier, I have been very busy and not very active on WP of late. Congrats on the GA though, it looks like you've done a really good job with it! --BelovedFreak 10:27, 25 March 2012 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) As a redirect-inclusionist I've made one from North Pier now (it does seem to be the only usage, to my surprise). I'd have thought it necessary - I'm surprised that GA criteria don't include the existence of any necessary redirects, hatnotes, or dab page entries! PamD 10:53, 25 March 2012 (UTC)
Looked at the incoming links to North Pier, I found a huge number: from a Chicago malls template, "defunct" section - so disambiguated that link to a redlink to North Pier (Chicago) - it doesn't seem worth creating a dab page or hatnote just to allow for that. Nothing is ever straightforward! PamD 11:08, 25 March 2012 (UTC)
Wow! Thanks Pam! And cheers Belovedfreak, am pleased with how it turned out. WormTT · (talk) 08:41, 27 March 2012 (UTC)

Hi WormTT. Can you help me with this template? I can't get it right and it's annoying me. I've finally finished it but can't get the reference in without the table refusing to show up properly, and so i'm left with a reference name and no reference... Thanks Jenova20 13:08, 26 March 2012 (UTC) Thanks Jenova20 13:11, 26 March 2012 (UTC)

This was sorted so don't worry about it. Thanks Jenova20 08:37, 27 March 2012 (UTC)
Sorry, haven't been looking after my talk page for the past few days. Glad it's sorted. WormTT · (talk) 08:39, 27 March 2012 (UTC)
Don't worry about it, i was just anxious not to leave it unfinished. And you don't need to brag that you have a life! =P Jenova20 08:43, 27 March 2012 (UTC)
Have you not SEEN the weather? My goodness, summer's here! It'll be winter again by the end of the week... enjoy it while it lasts. WormTT · (talk) 08:46, 27 March 2012 (UTC)
I did notice it actually but i have a cold! =[
