Wikipedia Ambassador Program is looking for new Online Ambassadors

Hi Willking! Since you've been identified as an Awesome Wikipedian, I wanted to let you know about the Wikipedia Ambassador Program, and specifically the role of Online Ambassador. We're looking for friendly Wikipedians who are good at reviewing articles and giving feedback to serve as mentors for students who are assigned to write for Wikipedia in their classes.

If that sounds like you and you're interested, I encourage you to take a look at the Online Ambassador guidelines; the "mentorship process" describes roughly what will be expected of mentors during the current term, which started in January and goes through early May. If that's something you want to do, please apply!

You can find instructions for applying at WP:ONLINE. The main things we're looking for in Online Ambassadors are friendliness, regular activity (since mentorship is a commitment that spans several months), and the ability to give detailed, substantive feedback on articles (both short new articles, and longer, more mature ones).

I hope to hear from you soon.--Sage Ross - Online Facilitator, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 17:59, 3 February 2011 (UTC)

Wow...I never thought the Cats would make it that far. We should monitor the team page and related pages (such as John Calipari) very closely in the coming days for vandalism and other issues that may pop up. Willking1979 (talk) 13:25, 28 March 2011 (UTC)
Yep, they are already on my watchlist. Expecting lots of snarky comments about this Final Four being vacated soon. They already took Enes from us; what else do they want? LOL. Deandre said he wanted another shot at Kemba; looks like he'll get it. Kansas was the one team that I really worried about, but since they got Shaka'd on Sunday, I'd say it's wide open for any of the four remaining teams. Here's to number 8!
BTW, I'm thinking of doing some sourcing and cleanup to John Calipari after the season, especially after this piece for SI by S. L. Price. Acdixon (talk contribs count) 14:28, 28 March 2011 (UTC)

Banned user is back

Hi, Willking1979. I'm writing because user ItsLassieTIe, whom you and two other admins (User:MuZemike, User:Brandon) were involved in banning, has returned and is causing problems at Nicole Kidman and other pages. He is presently blocked for another day for edit warring and incivility.

This user is User:DeadSend4, who at the third post here concedes, “I am Jane his wife. But I'm [not] going to use that account anymore.” Jane his wife was a sock of ItsLassieTime.

Since you were involved in banning ItsLassieTime, who notoriously has used a squadron of sockpuppets, I wanted to alert you that while banned, he is back and behaving the same way under another name. I and several editors whom you'll see at Talk:Nicole Kidman would appreciate any help, information or insight you might provide. With great thanks, --Tenebrae (talk) 17:14, 21 April 2011 (UTC)

Based on the discussions on other pages and the sock's confession, I have opened another SPI/CU case on ItsLassieTime. I prefer a indefinite block on the sock pending CheckUser evidence. Willking1979 (talk) 17:35, 21 April 2011 (UTC)
Thank you. It's very kind of you to begin the process so swiftly and directly. --Tenebrae (talk) 17:39, 21 April 2011 (UTC)
You're welcome. :) Willking1979 (talk) 17:40, 21 April 2011 (UTC)
Where's the SPI asserting that Jane His Wife is a sock of Its Lassie Time? ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots20:38, 21 April 2011 (UTC)
There was not one. Tenebrae used behavioral evidence not associated with any SPI to point out that DeadSend4 was a possible sock of ILT. Willking1979 (talk) 20:44, 21 April 2011 (UTC)
OK, but then he assumes the responsibility if the accusation is false. It suspect it's true, but I think it needs to be more solid than it is. Jane was blocked for contentious editing, not for being a sock. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots20:46, 21 April 2011 (UTC)
I was getting a little carried away there. :) I'm hopeful that it's not ILT, and that things will work out well for all. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots00:09, 22 April 2011 (UTC)

A personal note

Regarding the investigation into DeadSend4/Jane his wife, I believed at the onset that an SPI was needed. I realize that there is now a consensus, based on several new discussions, that DeadSend4 was not a sock of ItsLassieTime. Was I right to start an sockpuppet investigation at the time I received word of this? Based on what I knew at the time, yes. I did not have time to go through thousands of edits to determine my role in the ItsLassieTime block/ban. The new questions at hand are these:

  • Did DeadSend4 make a credible legal threat?
  • Why was DeadSend4 allowed to edit after he confess to using multiple accounts?

The answer to the first, in my opinion, is yes. The answer to the second question will be left to the community in other forums.

In perspective, though, I should have asked for more evidence (diffs, etc.) from Tenebrae. If I had more time, I would have looked harder. Willking1979 (talk) 23:13, 21 April 2011 (UTC)

Your eyes needed

Just making sure you're aware of this, which has been going on for way too long. I have a feeling that a block is coming for this user, but I don't want to be the one to do it, since I'm pretty involved at this point. I also suspect a bit of IP sockpuppetry has been going on at that article with regard to the "The List" appellation, and that my semi-protection last week brought out the identity of the puppeteer. See what you think. Acdixon (talk contribs count) 16:12, 11 July 2011 (UTC)

My advice is to file a report at SPI and include all evidence you have. I believe that there is a need for a block and/or IP rangeblock. I will continue to monitor the article closely. Willking1979 (talk) 16:44, 11 July 2011 (UTC)
Done. Here's the SPI case, if you're interested. Acdixon (talk contribs count) 20:23, 11 July 2011 (UTC)
Well, that didn't work. A clerk closed the SPI case saying that semi-protection would be enough to solve the problem. This morning, Jbfwildcat is right back at it. Now what? A block for edit warring? Again, I feel like I'm too close to this to be issuing the block myself, but it is a pretty clear cut case. Acdixon (talk contribs count) 13:29, 12 July 2011 (UTC)
I strongly agree at least a 24-hour edit warring a block is in order. Willking1979 (talk) 13:32, 12 July 2011 (UTC)

Advice

Hey friend. Another question for you. I'm getting fatigued with the interminable discussion at Talk:Confederate government of Kentucky over whether that government should be called "provisional" or "shadow". If you read the lengthy discussion there (be sure to have some time available for that!), you'll see that the best compromise that could be reached was to use both at varying points in the article. This compromise passed muster at FAC in 2007. Over several months, there has been a stream of new editors, including Andypreston2010 (talk · contribs), Jollerky (talk · contribs), Madisonhenry46 (talk · contribs), Phillipconrad11 (talk · contribs), Ollerj (talk · contribs), and a few stray IP editors, that have gone to the talk page to question this compromise. Normally, I would open an RFC to see if this represented a shift in consensus, but several of these accounts seem to be WP:SPAs, if not outright sock or meat puppets. I had been content to just try and refute their arguments with policy, but I grow weary of repeating myself. What do you think is the most appropriate course of action? An RFC? An SPA or SOCK investigation? Would it be considered acting in bad faith if I were the one to initiate an investigation? Acdixon (talk · contribs) 15:28, 2 January 2012 (UTC)

Those accounts do seem suspicious. However, in my view, the best avenue of action is an RFC. The article is FA-class, thus any changes to the article could have major impacts on the article's rating and should involve other established editors and admins. Image Permission Help, January 10, 2012

Hi, I'm not sure if I'm doing this right, but I hope that you will be able to help me with this. In the past, I uploaded an image to a wikipedia article that I created for an author, but because I didn't get a permission in on time, the image was removed. I've obtained the permission and had the owner of the image send it to the permission commons for Wikimedia, and that person has yet to receive a response, and a couple of weeks have gone by (that person sent it in again recently). The image is called My Pictures.jpg, and the image is the author on a ship facing the water. I'd like to have this image reuploaded so I can finally add it to the author page. I would really appreciate your help with this. Thanks (User: Melissa89, request for Judith A. MSU Interview

Dear Willking1979,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your name HERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) 07:26, 12 February 2012 (UTC) Young June Sah --Yjune.sah (talk) 22:09, 15 February 2012 (UTC)

Wikipedia Stories Project

Hi!

My name is Victor and I'm a storyteller with the Wikimedia Foundation, the non-profit organization that supports Wikipedia. I'm chronicling the inspiring stories of the Wikipedia community around the world, including those from readers, editors, and donors. Stories are absolutely essential for any non-profit to persuade people to support the cause, and we know the vast network of people who make and use Wikipedia have so much to share. I found your username from the Highbeam application list.

I'd very much like the opportunity to interview you to tell your story, with the possibility of using it in our materials, on our community websites, or as part of this year’s fundraiser to encourage others to support Wikipedia. Please let me know if you're inclined to take part in the Wikipedia Stories Project, or if you know anyone with whom I should speak.

Thank you for your time,

ICHTHUS

May 2012

From the Editor

This month marks the observation of Pentecost, one of the most important feast of the Christian liturgical year. It is our hope here that all of you, regardless of your religious affiliation (if any), find that the holiday, and its accompanying activities, an enjoyable and beneficial experience. We also hope that this "Birthday of the Church" is one which gives you the same joy as the birthday of yourself or your loved ones.

Ichthus is the successor to the long running WikiProject Christianity newsletter, run under the WikiProject Christianity’s Outreach department. As such, you will continue to see information about our latest featured and good articles, DYKs, as well as new members who have joined our project. You might also see links to Christianity related news from the mainstream media!

With that, I wish you all happy reading!

John Carter, Asst. Editor

Help Bring Wikipe-tan "into the fold"

As many of you may know, our unofficial mascot, dear Wikipe-tan, hasn't yet indicated any particular beliefs. However, yes, as we all know, ahem, some people might object to our beloved mascot running around in a French maid outfit. People do talk, you know. ;) If anyone might be able to develop an image of the dear lady in a image more, well, "Christian," I would like to see perhaps a vote for next month as to which, if any, image of the dear girl we might make our own unofficial mascot. Please post your images here.

Christianity in other wikis

As many of you might now, there are a large number of other Wikimedia Foundation projects, including WikiSource, Wiktionary, Wikibooks, WikiQuote, and others. I certainly believe that Wikibooks and Wikiquote might be among the more directly relevant sister projects. If any of you can think of any particular efforts in these other projects which you think would benefit from more input, please let us know here, so we can help spread the word around.

Spotlight on the Outreach department

Ichthus will spotlight a different subproject or workgroup of WikiProject Christianity. This edition will spotlight on our vital Outreach department. This comparatively small, but vital, project unit is dedicated to welcoming new editors to Wikipedia and the Christianity related content, and to providing information to the various project members, in forms like this newsletter.

The scope of articles with which this group deals is truly enormous, and, given the wide variety of material with which we deal, we would very much welcome the input of more individuals, particularly individuals who are particularly knowledgeable of the less well-known and less frequently monitored articles related to Christianity.

Speaking personally, I would be very, very gratified if we were to have this become a very, very large and active unit, with members from the broad spectrum of Christian beliefs, practices, and groups. The broader the spectrum and areas of expertise of members we have, the better we will be able to help manage the content. Please consider whether you believe you might be able to contribute in this vital area.

Urgent Help and Warning: the IP address, 212.121.219.1 is engaging in serious hacking activities, not just simple acts of vandalism in the other Wikipedia encyclopedias.

Warning: the IP address, 212.121.219.1 registered to Oldham MBC public libraries, and which is permanently blocked in English Wikipedia since 2009, is the source of serious hacking activities. Today on 14 May 2012 other vulnerable Wikipedia encyclopedias are under attack from this address where it is not blocked. This source is capable of hacking Wikipedia, as it is the case today in the other Wikipedia encyclopedias, because it has erased the history archives for instance in the Azerbaijan articles of the Wikipedia encyclopedias and is doing it in other country articles as well, which no simple vandal can do. This source is freely roaming and usurping right now.

Can anyone inform the administrators of the other Wikipedia encyclopedias and help them against the IP address, 212.121.219.1, because most of the small Wikipedia encyclopedias are vulnerable. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 88.224.23.137 (talk) 21:50, 14 May 2012 (UTC)

Voting will take place this month for which image we should adopt at Wikipedia:WikiProject Christianity/Outreach/Wikipe-tan. Please take a moment to review the images and vote for whichever is your favorite, or, if you so prefer, suggest an additional one.

Wikimedia Foundation report

Wikisource currently has many old texts available, most of them in the public domain. This is a potentially very valuable source for several things, including for instance links to Biblical verses, because we know that it will, basically, be around as long as we are.

Christian art

This section would include a rather large image of a specific work of art, with a link to the most directly relevant article.

Suggestion: Resurrection of Christ, an English 15th century Nottingham alabaster. Groups of painted relief panels were sold via dealers to churches on a budget , who had wood frameworks made to hold them locally. From a huge new donation of images from the Walters Art Museum to Commons, see

I believe

... in the statements contained in the Nicene Creed. I believe that the Bible is one of the two defining bases for belief. The other is the Sacred tradition, which provides us with means of interpreting the Scriptures, as well as some teachings which have been handed on by God outside of the scriptures. I believe that the Magisterium has been empowered to fill this interpretative function. I believe that clerical celibacy is a rule that should generally be followed. I am a member of the Catholic Church.

Credo Reference Update & Survey (your opinion requested)

Credo Reference, who generously donated 400 free Credo 250 research accounts to Wikipedia editors over the past two years, has offered to expand the program to include 100 additional reference resources. Credo wants Wikipedia editors to select which resources they want most. So, we put together a quick survey to do that:

It also asks some basic questions about what you like about the Credo program and what you might want to improve.

At this time only the initial 400 editors have accounts, but even if you do not have an account, you still might want to weigh in on which resources would be most valuable for the community (for example, through WikiProject Resource Exchange).

Also, if you have an account but no longer want to use it, please leave me a note so another editor can take your spot.

If you have any other questions or comments, drop by my talk page or email me at wikiocaasi@yahoo.com. Cheers! Ocaasi t | c 17:37, 11 July 2012 (UTC)

Please let us know what you think of the new departments, and if there are any other suggestions for departments you would like to see. And if you have anything you would personally like to add, by all means let us know. The talk page of the current issue is probably the best place to post such comments.
