Huggle template testing

Hey Wikipelli,

You may not have noticed, but you're currently part of a little experiment Steven Walling and I are running on en.wiki: we're A/B testing Huggle templates to see if changing the content of their message has any effect on the user that receives them. We've been running the test since Sunday and will turn it off in two days and analyze all the data we've collected (over 1500 users Huggled as of yesterday!), but I wanted to get some unscientific feedback from some of the folks I noticed using our templates – including you :)

So, first thing's first: did you happen to notice that you were sending out different templates? And, more importantly, did you notice any difference on your talk page? More or less people than usual coming to talk to you? More or less vandalism or constructive questions?

Thanks a lot! And if you're interested in helping us tweak more templates, please let me know! We only tested the level 1 vandalism warning this week, but we're thinking of revamping the other level 1 warnings (test, NPOV, blanking, etc.) too. --Maryana (WMF) (talk) 18:52, 30 September 2011 (UTC)

I sometimes make mistakes with Huggle and that takes me back to IPs that I've warned and I noticed the new template. It was a couple of days before I noticed, though.
I don't think I get enough people talking to me about warnings to say (after only 5 days) whether there was more or less response. I'd have to say about the same. In general, though, using huggle I don't often get people complaining or talking about edits because they ARE IPs (as a rule) and they ARE vandalizing (as a rule), so at best I'll get my talk page vandalized instead of any kind of dialogue. Yeah.. have to say that I haven't noticed much change at all (if any).
I will say that I like the new template, though. It's more personal and friendly. More like what I'd want to see on my page. Perhaps if I was reverting other than IPs I'd get more dialogue with it.
Lastly, Yes! I'd be happy to work with you on 'tweaking' templates. Just let me know what I can do! Wikipelli Talk 21:20, 30 September 2011 (UTC)
Yes, that's the trouble with testing on Huggle – it would be nice if we could try it out with messages that are delivered mostly to new registered editors. We're going to test the more specific level 1 Huggle warnings (test, bio, blanking, etc.) next week, but we're also thinking about trying a randomized test out with Twinkle, since that tends to hit more registered editors – and, especially where deletion notifications are concerned, editors who have made more than a passing contribution to the project. Any ideas on how to go about doing that would be greatly appreciated! The sheer number of TW templates is pretty daunting, so it would be good to pick a couple of the significant ones to tinker with. Can you think of one or two commonly used ones off the top of your head?
Happy to hear you like our revamped templates! Steven is working on some new ones now, and I'll be sure to drop you the link once they go up on the wiki. Feel free to pitch in with edits and/or suggestions, and if there's anyone else you think might be interested in template rewriting/testing, bring them aboard, too. The more the merrier :) --Maryana (WMF) (talk) 23:41, 30 September 2011 (UTC)
Hey Wikipelli: the new templates Maryana mentioned are now up on-wiki. Your experienced would be most welcome if you want to comment on them etc. and we're watching the talk pages for them all. :) The full list is:
  1. {{uw-test1-rand}}
  2. {{uw-delete1-rand}}
  3. {{uw-npov1-rand}}
  4. {{uw-unsor1-rand}}
  5. {{uw-error1-rand}}
  6. {{uw-blank1-rand}}
  7. {{uw-spam1-rand}}
  8. {{uw-bio1-rand}}
  9. {{uw-attack1-rand}}
Thanks in advance, and for the quick response about the other new warnings we tested. Steven Walling (WMF) • talk 01:20, 11 October 2011 (UTC)
Thanks... I'm not completely sure how this all works. Are the templates above being used now when I'm using Huggle?
My thoughts:
  1. {{uw-test1-rand}} - good; friendly..
  2. {{uw-delete1-rand}} - good; friendly..
  3. {{uw-npov1-rand}} - fine, but how about, instead of "your edits seem less than neutral" it says something like, "your edits seem to be promoting one opinion over another".. something like that. The whole 'neutral' thing might be too abstract...
  4. {{uw-unsor1-rand}} - I'd include a line to the effect that, "wikipedia relies on facts being verified by reliable sources"
  5. {{uw-error1-rand}} - good...
  6. {{uw-blank1-rand}} - good...
  7. {{uw-spam1-rand}} - take out, "... written by people like you and me, "
  8. {{uw-bio1-rand}} - excellent
  9. {{uw-attack1-rand}} - great
those are my impressions, for what they're worth. :) I like the personalization a lot. Some might seem a little too nice. But I'd like to see how it goes. :) Wikipelli Talk 22:41, 12 October 2011 (UTC)

Thanks again for your feedback on the templates! I wanted to let you know that we've teamed up with WikiProject user warnings on a template testing task force. We also have a hub on Meta for cross-wiki tests (we're planning on trying this out on Portuguese and possibly other projects in the near future). Please join up if you're interested in helping with more template testing! Thanks, Maryana (WMF) (talk) 17:32, 17 October 2011 (UTC)

Hi Wikkipelli - DadrianT,Esq here

I'm stuck. I need your help/guidance. My 'County Surveyor' draft article is progressing well. However, I need to upload two graphics both from open access sources that my Google Search engine for Images found for me. I have put the source ?URL? address of each in the place on the draft article page where I would like them to appear. However, I don't know how to get Wikipedia to copy those images into my draft article. I have tried reading the Help pages about the Creative Commons scheme, but I cant find any clear instructions as to how to upload copies of those images into the Creative Commons database. Can you please do it for me; or teach me how to do it myself. I appreciate that the images are a bit esoteric, but they are highly relevant to the section of the draft article that they will lie alongside.

Thanking you in anticipation DadrianT,EsqMCIHT (talk) 21:26, 13 October 2011 (UTC)

Yeah, dealing with images causes me the most trouble. What I do is go to Wikipedia Commons (click on the WP globe and then scroll down to the bottom of the page and find the link). Once you're there, you can click on the upload button on the left margin and follow the upload wizard. I confess that I always have some problems with the rights. Mostly I've uploaded pictures that I've taken myself or that I know are in the public domain because of their age. The wizard should guide you through it. :) Good luck! DadrianT,EsqMCIHT (talk) 00:51, 14 October 2011 (UTC)

Hiya Wikkipelli - when you get a spare minute please go see County Surveyor - I managed to get my thoughts down in writing tidy, so I copied and pasted it into County Surveyor and tidied it a little bit more in there.
I still have to write a section on where freemasonry fits in, but will do that quietly in my drafting page where I won't upset anybody

DadrianT,EsqMCIHT (talk) 01:00, 17 October 2011 (UTC)

Hi DadrianT.... Let's take our conversation on the article to that article's talk page, ok?  :) This will allow other editors to chime in with comments/suggestions if they have them. Wikipelli Talk 14:12, 17 October 2011 (UTC)

Regarding 93.136.5.141 (talk · contribs)

It is hard to assume good faith from somebody hiding behind a mail server.[1] According to project honey pot, this IP range has been found to be the source of a dictionary attack, and is currently blocked by Spamhaus. We appear to have someone using Wikipedia from this IP for reasons that are less than kosher. Furthermore, this particular bit of content that the IP has been trying to add to the article has been removed for good reason after another registered account tried adding it for several years. They know that I know who they are, so it should be interesting to watch their next move. Viriditas (talk) 08:01, 15 October 2011 (UTC)

Yeah... never checked the IP. I reverted it and then thought better of it and put it back. Someone with better knowledge of the topic could judge the edit better. We'll see.  :) Wikipelli Talk 10:09, 15 October 2011 (UTC)

Aluminium oxide - 3RR

Strictly spoken, you have also violated 3RR on Aluminium trioxide. Please understand that 3RR is a bright line, and I am afraid that this edit is not strictly vandalism. Next time, after noting that you get to 3 reverts, consider warning the other party of the problem (they already passed 3RR way before you came to that point), and extend your report to AIV (or report if you did not do that yet) and let others handle it further. Having it in the wrong version for some time is less problematic than editwarring over the content. Thanks! --Dirk Beetstra T C 14:35, 19 October 2011 (UTC)

Understood, and thanks. I was going on the premise that I was not calling it vandalism so much as reacting to unsourced content - particularly the information related to AlOx's against populations. By the time I had decided to write an explanation to the user on why I thought the edit was not appropriate, they had rec'd the last warning. I should have made the explanation earlier.
I'm going over the user's talk page now, though, and something is amiss. My first warning to the user cites 'unexplained removal of content'. That's not right. I can only assume that I hit the wrong reason with huggle. I'll have to follow that up. In any event, thanks for the heads up. I see your point. Wikipelli Talk 15:05, 19 October 2011 (UTC)

According to J.Kaplan of the Jaffa Museum, in "The Archaeology and History of Tel Aviv-Jaffa" the shape was a copy of the skin-bottle, ps American footballs didn't even exist then.

I'm willing to say that your edit was not vandalism and was a good faith edit. I'll take the warning off your page and you're free to add the text to the article. I will say, however, that I don't think your reference reinforces what you want to include. The text says that butter was churned or made IN a skin bottle, but it doesn't describe the shape. The fact that American footballs didn't exist is irrelivant. I'm confident that the author of that information was describing a shape that was familiar to today's readers. You might want to first put your thoughts on the article's talk page. Wikipelli Talk 17:14, 19 October 2011 (UTC)

wth? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.90.83.103 (talk) 18:15, 24 October 2011 (UTC)

It would be difficult to say whether the edits you made were 'truthful' or not and, really, that's beside the point. There are a couple of issues with what you've tried to add. First, it is considered soapboxing to add a tirade such as yours against the company (I presume it's against the company). Second, if the addition does contain factual information, there is no reliable references to substantiate the claims - only your word (posts from Facebook, by the way, are not considered reliable sources). Finally, the addition that you've made is completely out of any context. The reader has no idea what it is about. Wikipelli Talk 18:22, 24 October 2011 (UTC)

Brian Camelio, help needed

Thanks for your recent edit to Talk:Brian Camelio. The edit you reverted seems at least to have been regarded as a personal attack by User:Nowa (targetted as his real-world identity), in view of the following unusual edits he made. Or maybe he has received some legal threats outside Wikipedia... I am concerned about these developments. I wouldn't be surprised if User:Jamesrand, User:72.52.203.143 (see this edit following this discussion), and User:TBeckham were sockpuppets persistently trying to add promotional material to the article Brian Camelio (as well as ArtistShare). If you could mediate or if you know how to efficiently raise awareness of these disputes in the community, I would be very grateful for your help. Thanks. --Edcolins (talk) 19:44, 24 October 2011 (UTC)

I started out constructing a defense for the concerns raised on the article's talk page but then I realized (in part because of the reverting by the other editor) that the back-and-forth about motives really had no place on the article's talk page. I have suggested that TBeckham take their concerns to wp:ani and also commented on Nowa's page that it's just not appropriate to argue the point on an article's discussion page. Since you're an admin, I'm kinda looking to you to see if you think that's an appropriate disposition. :) Wikipelli Talk 22:43, 24 October 2011 (UTC)

Wikipedia article 'County Surveyor'

Hiya Wikipelli

If you can find a few minutes to take a quick look at how the article 'County Surveyor' is progressing, and leave a comment, I'd be grateful. I'm going to leave it stew for a while as I have a few other irons in the fire, and need to give them some attention.

Anyway. When I get back to the article, I will be looking to expand the text about the USA - the first thing I will do is list every county the USA and surf as many of them as I can for information about the role of the 'County Surveyor' in USA.

I will then surf all the other nations of the world to find out if they also have such officials, and what they do, there.

I think that the greatest opportunity that Wikipedia has, is of becoming regarded as the most authoritative global encyclopaedia in the world.

In view of my surprise as finding no entry in the Oxford English Dictionary about 'county surveyor', I have suggested to them that they should review that omission.

My highest regards

Fat is NOT neutral

Fat&reactionary appears to only edit articles and revert edits, which appear to be anti-conservative to him. Just take a look at his talk page...

It would be far more appropriate to cite instances where the editor has made inappropriate edits - rather than a talk page. If you can cite instances, by all means you can let me know and the appropriate steps can be taken. Otherwise, it's not against WP policy to HAVE views... it's only against policy to edit to promote those views. Cite evidence.... Wikipelli Talk 23:47, 26 October 2011 (UTC)

Take a look at: Revision history of Days of Prayer for Rain in the State of Texas. There it's been cited... Jocular112 (talk) 23:59, 26 October 2011 (UTC)Jocular

I looked. There's no question that there's a disagreement over a small portion of the article but it also appears as though it's being worked out on the talk page. The editor is stubborn, no question, but I don't see a violation of Wikipedia policy.
I will say that your actions of vandalizing the editor's user page IS a violation - vandalizing mine, as well. You'll not help your argument at all if you start off that way. I'm glad you ended up stating your concern calmly here. Another thing that is not going to help is the fact that your account was created only 2 minutes before vandalizing the userpage. That raises concerns about sockpuppetry. Keep calm, discuss the issues in a civil manner on the talk page, and see where it goes. If the discussion comes to a deadlock you can always ask for another editor to mediate. Wikipelli Talk 00:22, 27 October 2011 (UTC)

About something in Commodore 16 page

Hi there,

I saw you posted something about me on Commodore 16 page on Feb 2011. The history is simple, I founded in an old bookcase some old ads and manuals about the Old commodore computer sold in a supermarket near my home in Mexico. I saw that none page of wikipedia talk about that, so I did opened the section "mexico" and posted what I found. Then somebody called "ubcule" started to made my life a HELL. he claims that I lie at any costs and my ads and manuals are fake. I did post by accident the ad to wikipedia commons and up there the user "ubcule" went to tell me that he was going to delete the file and he did it.

I'm not a liar and can show the scans to these ads and manuals to anybody, but I'm tired of defend my material of people like that user. I'm tired and I regret to think that I could add this info to wikipedia. I just want to delete my info of this place and the material I did post. So please I'll try to delete the info about mexico in commodore 16 and keep it deleted please. You all won "commodore never made computers in mexico" despite I have the manuals and ads in my hands.

And I left this on commodore 16 page. Also I'll tell "ubucle" that won:

" Hi, Actually I regret to write on Wikipedia thanks Ubcule that made my life miserable. I did removed the ad as I have no permission to add it to this place in the start. Actually I didn't invent that Commodore made computers in Mexico, but I'm too tired to defend myself of people like user mentioned. If you don't like info I did posted, please just delete it or do whatever you like. I'll post the ads and local manuals in the proper commodore pages that have friendly users that really welcome the info. I had my share of Wikipedia Trolls and I had enough. Farewell. - Lobocursor — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lobocursor (talkcontribs) 05:11, 27 October 2011 (UTC)

Hi, lobocursor... Sorry it's taken me a couple of days to get back to you on this. Last February I did revert one of your edits to the article. I have reviewed it and it is obvious to me that I reverted because you completely removed a section of the article without giving any explanation. I do not watch that particular article, my only interest was to prevent unexplained removal of content. (no edit summary was given by you). Though you've since removed my comment from your talk page, it can be seen here. My comment clearly gives an explanation as to why I reverted your edit.
I'm sorry that you're running into difficulties with the edits. It can be a difficult process to understand sometimes. I have looked at the talk pages and other edits by you and Ubcule and I honestly don't see anything that would suggest that the editor has called you a liar. Whether or not their edits and comments have made your life "HELL" is something I can't answer - everyone reacts differently to being challenged on things, but I will say that all of the edits and comments seem proper and valid.
I think that you have an honest interest in improving the article and you are editing in good faith - I don't see evidence of lying or faking anything. I hope that this experience does not cause you to abandon those efforts. It takes time, but read the comments about editing and citing sources and you'll get better at it.  :) If you need help with your editing in the future, please don't hesitate to leave me a message! Cheers! Wikipelli Talk 12:34, 30 October 2011 (UTC)

  • SDPatrolBot: There is a new test running on the talk page messages of SDPatrolBot, which warns people who remove CSD templates. (Documentation of the test is here.)
  • Twinkle: We've proposed a test of AFD and PROD notifications delivered via Twinkle, which has been positively received. (See: 1, 2) This test should start this week.
  • Shared and dynamic IPs: Maryana's proposal to test the effect of regularly archiving shared/dynamic IP talk pages is in its final stages. There are also two relevant bot flag requests: 1, 2
  • XLinkBot: the herders of XLinkBot have approved a test of its warning messages concerning external links. Test templates are being written and help is most welcome.

Not a social site

I apologize if I upset you by making it seem to social between me & my friend, but you see I am at school and that is the only way, I have been adding what I can to pages and afterward deleting the posted pages on our usertalk pages. I’m sure you’d understand something like that and know that other than that, which I do not believe is actually against the rules, done no hard to it, or any actual pages. But if you want me to stop with it then I will respect your request.

There are certainly social aspects to working on Wikipedia. Editors know each other or get to know each other and there are some social comments passed back and forth. But that is in the context of working on articles - either writing them or editing others. I see by your contributions that you've made 30 edits since October 5 but only 3 of them have been on articles. :) It's ok to be social but not ok to onlyedit Wikipedia to be social. Wikipelli Talk 14:47, 8 November 2011 (UTC)

I understand; and I left another message on my friend's profile telling her about it, and I shall try harder to work on pages. Oh and I think some information on the Fanta's flavour listing might be false, would you check that out for me?

Just about every website is blocked on the School County web server "here".

I'd be more than happy to help you edit an article. There is an article on the author already here. You can add to that article and edit it all you want. Remember, any information that's added should have a reliable source. This might be an article in the newspaper, magazine, some websites. If you find information that you want to add, you can put it in the article. I'll watch the article to see how you're doing and give you help when you need. I would suggest helping this article out before creating a new one. If you feel the title should be changed, we can do that later. Let me know what you need help with and I'll be glad to assist!  :) Wikipelli Talk 14:19, 17 November 2011 (UTC)

Yes, that is the article I was talking about, seeing as the article name is Mari Mancusi, should I just add that that's a pen name, or try adding a redirect link with a dud page of Marianne Mancusi, and just add the books that she's written under her real name?

~A game is a game, and reality is reality, don't bring reality into a game.~ (talk)

I think that's the best move for now. The article can always be moved later. I'll have to look at how Wikipedia handles authors - whether they have the articles under pen names or actual names. Wikipelli Talk 15:33, 17 November 2011 (UTC)
Have a look at the entries for Mark Twain and O. Henry. Both are pen names. Their real names redirect to their pen names. I'd do it like those articles have it.Wikipelli Talk 15:39, 17 November 2011 (UTC)

Okay, will do, thanks again for the help thus far, And I did as you sugested about being to social, and have been helping out on a page I'm fairly well suited for, the PSP game listing is my area of Expertise :3

Thanks!  :) Social is fine, and it's really a big part of how wikipedia works - editors come to know each other and talk some online. The problem arises when it's ONLY used for social purposes. So, working on articles that interest you, chatting a bit with a friend about the article and such - that is fine. :) Let me know what I can do to help. Wikipelli Talk 15:50, 17 November 2011 (UTC)

Okay, I added the little bit of which I could remember about her on there, and mentioned the book, I might re-read the book just to create an article on that as well. (I keep forgetting to add my Signature -,-) ~A game is a game, and reality is reality, don't bring reality into a game.~ (talk)

Good start! You can add little by little. Don't forget the basic information - date of birth, where she was born, things like that. Check some other articles about authors (Orson Scott Card, Mark Twain, Judy Blume, etc) to see how they're written. Remember that Wikipedia is an encyclopedia and the beginning of an article is where the basic information goes. Wikipelli Talk 18:46, 17 November 2011 (UTC)
I added an infobox to the page. If you look at most articles about people, you'll see that there is usually an infobox that has the main information about that person. When you click 'Edit' on the page, you'll see there are places for lots of information. You don't have to fill them all in. If something is left blank, it just won't appear in the box. Don't change any of the words that are in the box! Just add the information after the equals sign (=). Have fun! Wikipelli Talk 18:55, 17 November 2011 (UTC)
I think now we can continue this conversation on the talk page of the article. Mostly because that will allow other interested editors to join in the conversation on how the article should be written. You might find that there are a lot of other editors, or maybe not many. Anyway, I'll chat with you there on how the article is going. It's on my watchlist! Wikipelli Talk 19:20, 17 November 2011 (UTC)

How do I set my name & talk in the same signature & use a different font, like yours?

A game is a game, and reality is reality, don't bring reality into a game. (talk) 15:47, 18 November 2011 (UTC)

The simplest way is to go to your Preferences (top of the screen on the right) and take everything out of the box under your signature. That'll make it have your name and talk the way mine will look at the end of this (I deleted my 'fancy' signature code for now). To do it 'fancier' like you see some people have, you have to use html code. I know html but I think I kind of copied someone else's signature code that I liked! :) Wikipelli (talk) 16:52, 18 November 2011 (UTC)

Good Lord

Jeez - what happened at Butt plug earlier? Calabe1992 22:52, 18 November 2011 (UTC)

Oh... a homophobe was posting some things, evading blocks, etc. Just putting some foul stuff on the page. I was about to explain why it was wrong before the block, then the puppet.... that kinda day.. :) Wikipelli Talk 23:03, 18 November 2011 (UTC)
Oh yes. Fun... Calabe1992 23:08, 18 November 2011 (UTC)

Vandalism by 178.255.155.118

Hi - just to let you know I've just reverted some vandalism by 178.255.155.118 at Eurasian Union. I see that your previous warning on the talk page of the user has been blanked, but I found it in the history. Alfietucker (talk) 17:23, 21 November 2011 (UTC)

Thanks... I gave the IP a final warning and I'll see if it continues. Everything they've done today has been vandalism so I expect it'll be blocked before long if it isn't already. Wikipelli Talk 18:33, 21 November 2011 (UTC)

Thanks

Wilipelli,

I'd like to thank you for taking away a portion of a page that took away from the efforts of the athletes at our high school. Refering to John Glenn High School(Indiana)

Judging by the quality of your edits here [2], here [3], and here [4], the article is better without them. Wikipelli Talk 20:07, 21 November 2011 (UTC)

Design of talk page

How do you create backgrounds and boxes like you have on your page? Use my talk page to answer back please. Reply on my page please. Thanks Matthew583 (talk) 16:34, 23 November 2011 (UTC)

DESIGN

I have created my design of my page thanks to you. Please view it and tell me what you think. Reply on my page please. Thanks Matthew583 (talk) 14:44, 24 November 2011 (UTC)

Well done! The only thing you might want to be careful about is the darkness of your background. There are some who have a difficult time reading if the background is dark and there's not enough contrast between the text and the background. Looks good! Wikipelli Talk 18:56, 24 November 2011 (UTC)

Design and Error

Hi, I have changed the background color and I think it looks better, and for some strange reason your "Message Me" button doesn't work. Thanks Matthew583 (talk) 10:04, 25 November 2011 (UTC)

Opaque/Transparent Background and Contents Box

Hi, I don't suppose you know how to make your background color on your talk page as I tried but it just goes white but I want the color just not solid? Also do you know how to change the color of the contents box? Reply on my talk page please. Thanks Matthew583 (talk) 11:33, 25 November 2011 (UTC)

Background and Stuff

Hi,

  • Firstly, with my background you said I need to be careful that its not too dark so I thought that if I made it slightly transparent then it would be easier to read for everybody.
  • Secondly, your Helpful Stuff, Stars and Stuff and Edits links work at the top of the page but your Leave A Message link doesn't.
  • Finally, I didn't even know watchlists exist but I do now and I am watching you.

Thanks Matthew583 (talk) 13:08, 25 November 2011 (UTC)
