Evie Ferris

For Evie Ferris you pulled in the description of Australian singer from Wikidata. I don't know much about Wikidata, so I am not sure how the information is generated. From the articles I read about Ferris, she seems to be known as a dancer, though I don't know if she also sings on the The Wiggles. I didn't want to just change the short description, as I did not know how Wikidata came up with the description of singer. Your thoughts? DaffodilOcean (talk) 16:49, 22 June 2022 (UTC)

Hi @DaffodilOcean, the Wikidata item was created in this edit: https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Q109545672&oldid=1526319574. It used to be that short descriptions were retrieved from Wikidata, which can provide those in many languages. (So handy!) Then some folks decided that we shouldn't do that for some reason and all material such as descriptions should be kept on enwiki in plain text instead of on Wikidata in a structured database. So now there's a project to localize them: Wikipedia:WikiProject Short descriptions. There is a gadget that makes writing those short descriptions easier: Wikipedia:Shortdesc helper. I have that enabled, and whenever I see a missing short description I add one, often by importing the existing description from Wikidata . Anything I contribute to Wikipedia, can and very likely should be improved. You should feel free to change the short description to whatever you think is best. I am not interested in Ferris, but I was curious why her biography is up for deletion. Vexations (talk) 21:12, 22 June 2022 (UTC)
Whoa, I had no idea so much went into the short descriptions. Thanks for sharing all the details. I will go ahead and update the short description for Ferris to 'Australian dancer'. As for why Ferris is up for deletion, I am not sure. However, the article did have less detail before I started working on it. DaffodilOcean (talk) 01:13, 23 June 2022 (UTC)

Hello

Hi, I know you are well versed in art topics. I wonder if you might give me an opinion about a separate article for Western (genre) or Western art. I recently started an article on Richard Lorenz (artist) and started reading about others who worked in that area. Right now it is a paragraph in the Western (genre) article. Thanks! Bruxton (talk) 04:20, 25 June 2022 (UTC)

Hi @Bruxton I don't know if "Western" is the most common term in use for art that depicts the American frontier or the "Wild West". The National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum may be a good source for a more definitive terminology. I often refer to the Getty Art & Architecture Thesaurus, but they don't list the term as relating to painting or visual arts, only film and literature.
I'd try to avoid any confusion of the American west with Western Europe. See for example Britannica's article on Western arts. That would be my first response if you asked me what I thought western art was.
Interesting how many Germans artists were making this kind of work. Have you read Native Americans in German popular culture? Vexations (talk) 12:03, 25 June 2022 (UTC)
Thanks, I have not read that article but I will. It is interesting that they latched on to that genre.Bruxton (talk) 21:53, 25 June 2022 (UTC)

I didn't check the link. Thanks, Vexations (talk) 10:55, 3 August 2022 (UTC)

I've been looking for references, since I'm fluent in Dutch, but I can't find much. I did find a photo: https://www.joodsmonument.nl/nl/page/181268/marianne-jeannette-pinkhof-oppenheim. Vexations (talk) 11:49, 6 August 2022 (UTC)

Women in Red

Hi there, Vexations. As a result of your comments on the WiR talk page, I thought I would take a look at your own article creations. I see you have been responsible for including quite a few women artists yourself. As you seem interested not only in visual art but in mentoring, growth and statistics, not to mention your knowledge of Dutch and German, I'm sure you would be a useful member of our project. Please think about joining. I think you will find us pretty welcoming and not at all subject to the aspects of leadership you so dislike. Alternatively, if you are not keen to become a member, I could always include you on our mailing list so that you could see what we are doing.--Ipigott (talk) 13:37, 8 August 2022 (UTC)

Thanks for the offer, I'll think about it. Vexations (talk) 14:51, 8 August 2022 (UTC)
