Congratulations to the lost Paradises ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:11, 21 September 2017 (UTC)
When would you like that to appear? Author's birthday, 21 October? - Well, two nominations already pending for that date this year. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:05, 21 September 2017 (UTC)
- Many thanks, Gerda, for the congratulations and the thorough review! I'm still debating when I want it on the main page: I actually also have A Wizard of Earthsea, which passed earlier this year but hasn't been featured yet. I'll think on it...can you suggest anything? Vanamonde (talk) 03:10, 22 September 2017 (UTC)

DYK for Slaty-backed forktail
On 24 September 2017, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Slaty-backed forktail, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the call of the slaty-backed forktail can easily be mistaken for that of the Blyth's kingfisher? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Slaty-backed forktail. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Slaty-backed forktail), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

- Indeed, sorry to see that. Take care, mate! -- Kautilya3 (talk) 09:35, 29 September 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks for asking, folks. All is indeed well, and I'm doing fine. I'm just dreadfully busy, with a number of deadlines and sporadic access: and what little time I have for Wikipedia I want to preserve for content work at the moment, as I am conducting multiple reviews and have multiple articles being reviewed. That's pretty much all that it is. I'm uncertain how long my admin break will last, but I'm thinking 3 months, at the outside. Regards, Vanamonde (talk) 10:06, 29 September 2017 (UTC)
officiousness
I've just discovered your reversion of edits I made to Starship Troopers some months ago. Your note to me explaining I was out of line is dated in May '17. If I've identified the edits which you reverted (I've done a good bit of digging around in the history, and think I have), you were in error. They were English usage errors largely, and corrected statements (without any justification in the article) about for instance ST being Heinlein's most famous novel. FYI, I was for some years an admin here, was editing heavily for something like a decade, was at one time the 500th or something most prolific editor, am largely responsible for the content of quite a few articles in categories I was particularly interested in, and was involved (some times very prolifically) in quite a lot of talk discussions. I have been on a Wiki vacation for some time, and my adminship was canceled by the too inactive bot without my noticing. You went a bridge too far, I suspect assuming that an IP address is evidence of a newbie who doesn't get stuff and is in need of instruction. Your note to me seems to fit that assumption quite well. Exercise a little less automaticity and a little more sense in future, won't you? Best wishes, 69.118.209.149 (talk) 23:55, 16 September 2017 (UTC)
- [1]Just being helpful!--regentspark (comment) 01:00, 17 September 2017 (UTC)
- (Thanks, RP). I assumed nothing about your background: the change was made based on the substance of the edit. You added commentary that was not supported by the sources (eg " Many gamers believe that Halo:Combat evolved (Halo 1) has taken many ideas from Starship Troopers including design for armor, helmet and primary weapon.", with no sources at all). You also made changes to the language that moved it away from encyclopedic neutrality: see WP:CLAIM, for instance. Under the circumstances, my revert was justified, and if you felt strongly about certain terms being used, you should have brought the issues to the talk page. Vanamonde (talk) 04:31, 17 September 2017 (UTC)
- V, Actually the edit you cite was surely not from me. I have no interest in video games, specifically including Halo:Combat evolved, and kinow nothing about it. It is unlikely I would have made any such comment. As for neutrality tone, I found such guidance largely incoherent when I was actively involved editing, mostly because such exhortations seemed to me to matters of taste, lacking objective tests for violation or conformance. My view on your reverts, if I have identified them correctly, remains. Best wishes, 69.118.209.149 (talk) 02:40, 30 September 2017 (UTC)

- Following a discussion about mass-application of ECP and how the need for logging and other details of an evolving consensus may have been missed by some administrators, a rough guide to extended confirmed protection has been written. This information page describes how the extended-confirmed aspects of the protection policy are currently being applied by administrators.

Hi. Thankyou for your participation in the challenge series or/and contests. In November The Women in Red World Contest is being held to try to produce new articles for as many countries worldwide and occupations as possible. There will be over $4000 in prizes to win, including Amazon vouchers and paid subscriptions. If this would appeal to you and you think you'd be interested in contributing new articles on women during this month for your region or wherever please sign up in the participants section. The articles done may also count towards the ongoing challenge. If you're not interested in prize money yourself but are willing to participate and raise money to buy books about women for others to use, this is also fine. Help would also be appreciated in drawing up the lists of missing articles. If you think of any missing articles please add them to the sub lists by continent at Missing articles. Thankyou, and if taking part, good luck!♦ Dr. Blofeld 08:36, 5 October 2017 (UTC)

I remember Mama Africa for DYK ;) - When should she be TFA? Her birthday, 4 March, - also in women's month? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:14, 6 October 2017 (UTC)
Midnightblueowl, congrats and question are of course also for you! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:24, 6 October 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks, but really Vanamonde deserves all the credit on this one. I merely co-nominated to enable them to take the article forward. Well done Vanamonde! Midnightblueowl (talk) 22:40, 6 October 2017 (UTC)
- Many thanks, Gerda! I've been thinking of 8 November, which is the anniversary of her death, but perhaps it makes sense to wait till next year, when November 9 would be the tenth anniversary of her death? Still mulling it over. Also looking forward to seeing that image on the main page again: I really like it :) Midnightblueowl Don't underestimate your contribution: I think an outside look at the prose both and GAN and before FAC was vital. Thanks very much. Vanamonde (talk) 05:48, 7 October 2017 (UTC)
- Very generally, anniversaries of birth are more reason to celebrate ;) - I write articles on compositions to celebrate a composer's birth, DYK? One is nominated, with a looong title, the next will come today, promised (it's not ready yet, I got too tired last night). I initiated a peer review to improve another article for a 500th birthday, take a look ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:16, 7 October 2017 (UTC)
- I was always taught to celebrate a person's life after they have passed; but I do take your point. There isn't a particularly prominent birth anniversary coming up for Makeba any time soon, but perhaps we can just feature it on her birthday next year. I'll certainly take a look at those pieces: I did know you tried to time them. Pulling off a DYK hook for a 500th anniversary is amazing, well done! Vanamonde (talk) 06:42, 7 October 2017 (UTC)
- Thank you. After a person died, their life can be celebrated almost any day, no? The day of death thing has a little macabre connotation, as if we celebrate that someone died. - The look at "round" anniversaries seems to have lessened compared to former times. I recently suggested a 130th, but their was something more important that day, and they suggested next year. For the 500th, I have several DYK in mind (but not yet written, and one I thought was good is already in prep), but it's also Halloween, - on DYKTALK. The peer review is not for DYK, just general improvement. For that article to be DYK, it would first have to pass GA, and a look at the comments will tell you how likely that is ;) - Let's just improve it. There are things to look at such as image choice and placement. You don't have to be an expert to say if that lead image belongs in that article, above the infobox, for example. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:44, 7 October 2017 (UTC)
- True. Upon reflection, I think March 4 2018 would indeed be the best time. As you may have noticed, I'm rather busy these days (to the point of handing in my mop temporarily) but I'll try to stop by that PR. Cheers, Vanamonde (talk) 08:47, 7 October 2017 (UTC)
- Thank you. (Yes, I saw that you are busy, but others may look here as well.) - Proud of remembering a person's death ;) Klaus Huber was mentioned on Recent deaths yesterday (and still is today, actually), - I had nothing to do with the article, but when I noticed that he died, I thought something needed to be done. I wish I knew enough about the topic to write a better lead. DYK that one publisher added the date of death to their bio yesterday, as if I they saw it on Wikipedia ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:53, 7 October 2017 (UTC)
- I added her here and to the pending list. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:05, 7 October 2017 (UTC)

Wikipedia Asian Month 2017: Invitation to Participate
Hello! Last year, you signed up to participate in Wikipedia Asian Month (WAM) 2016 on the English Wikipedia. The event was an international success, with hundreds of editors creating thousands of articles on Asian topics across dozens of different language versions of Wikipedia.
I'd like to invite you to join us for Wikipedia Asian Month 2017, which once again lasts through the month of November. The goal is for users to create new articles on Asian-related content, each at least 3,000 bytes and 300 words in length. Editors who create at least four articles will receive a Wikipedia Asian Month postcard!
Also be sure to check out the Wikipedia Asian Art Month affiliate event - creating articles on Asian art topics can get you a Metropolitan Museum of Art postcard!
If you're interested, please sign up here for the English Wikipedia. If you are interested in also working on other language editions of Wikipedia, please visit the meta page to see other participating projects. If you have any questions, please visit our talk page.
Thank you!

bold
the title[2] needs to be bolded in the first sentence always?--Ozzie10aaaa (talk) 13:46, 4 November 2017 (UTC)
- @Ozzie10aaaa: No it doesn't: see MOS:BOLDAVOID. If it is easy to use in a normal sentence, then yes, but otherwise it's not useful, as it makes the sentence confusing. Vanamonde (talk) 13:52, 4 November 2017 (UTC)
- ok[3]... though I feel this is an important article that should have it :-)--Ozzie10aaaa (talk) 13:54, 4 November 2017 (UTC)
- The importance of the article matters very little: the page title is already present at the top of the page. The question is whether the bolding makes the sentence clearer (by highlighting its subject) or less clear (by forcing a stilted sentence). In this case, the situation is clearly the latter. List of political parties in Iran
Hi Vanamonde93
Pahlevun changed the whole article on aug 25th as he wished and deleted every information people managed to gather for the past 10 years. Moreover, the information he wrote were wrong or deceitful such as telling that the Tudeh Party of Iran is "Stalinist" or oddly writing that the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan is "successionist" (he maybe wanted to write secessionist?).
I already wrote to his talk page why his edits are not acceptable and instead of a proper answer he reverted back to his edits that deleted the original article. Please see below what I wrote him in his talk page and I gave him 6 reasons :
About your complete deletion of the previous article : - you deleted every information to replace them with charts - the quality of the article has greatly diminished as a consequence. - this article was created 10 years ago and I was among the founders of this article that saw hundreds of people contributing to it. To erase all information as you did is not acceptable. - a lot of information you added are wrong. For instance : (i) National Council of Iran is not a monarchist organization : prove your saying with an article coming from their official website. (ii) Tudeh Party of Iran is absolutely not a Stalinist Party - only the Labour Party of Iran can be described this way as their website clearly writes it. (iii) The Fadaian - Majority has not "post-communism" ideology. Their leaders have clearly stated they are democratic socialist. (iv) Mojahedin are absolutely not marxist : they have clearly stated they are in favor of free market. Their website is clear : they are not marxist. In partical terms, they are even on the right side of the political chessboard. (v) In your article, the Democrat Party of Iranian Kurdistan is a "successionist" party, which means nothing... (vi) you removed a lot of parties that does exist (small though) and the Wikipedia readers have a right to know them. etc... — Preceding unsigned comment added by WikipediaIRAN (talk • contribs) 14:24, 5 November 2017 (UTC)
So please revert back to the original article before Aug25th, which contained a lot of useful information to Wikipedian readers. "Pahlevun" judges that some Iranian parties are "paper" parties : who is he to judge which parties are "paper" parties and which ones are not ?
Thank you for your understanding.

No, I'm not going to do that. Whatever may have happened in August, the fact is you were edit-warring yesterday. If nobody responds to a talk page discussion, then invite more users to comment, via an RFC, for example. If someone else misbehaves, then report them. Neither of these things justifies your edit-warring. Karellen93 (talk) (Vanamonde93's alternative account) 06:15, 9 November 2017 (UTC)
Your opinion
How about taking a look at this list of contributions. I'd be interested in your opinion regarding a potential COI. Atsme📞📧 16:41, 8 November 2017 (UTC) One more tiny addition for you to see. 18:17, 8 November 2017 (UTC)
- @Atsme: I only have time for a brief look at the moment. I think we are seeing a user with slight competence issues (possibly a young user) who is very enthusiastic about certain bands. I'm not certain they have a COI: in my view, their edits are too scattered for this to be the case. So basically they need to understand NPOV and notability better. I might be wrong, of course. User page protection
Hello. I'm a new Wikipedian. I've seen that some user pages are padlocked to prevent vandalism. Could you please protect mine, please? I've put a gold padlock box on the talk page! User:Jason Trafford Smith —Preceding undated comment added 11:01, 10 November 2017 (UTC)
- @Jason Trafford Smith: It is true that I could protect your page, as some others have been. However, protection on Wikipedia is used as a means to prevent disruption, not simply because somebody wants it. I see no evidence that either your talk page or your user page are being disrupted, so I'm afraid I cannot protect them at the moment. Please see our WP:Protection policy for further details. Regards, Vanamonde (talk) 12:26, 10 November 2017 (UTC)
- @Vanamonde93: I really need protection. People have been disrupting my past accounts. My new one needs protecting, please! Regards, Jason Trafford Smith(talk) 14:26, 10 November 2017 (UTC)
- @Jason Trafford Smith: Sorry, but I'm not seeing any evidence of disruption on either page. I wonder if you have misunderstood what page protection is. Full protection would prevent anybody, excepting admins but including you, from editing those pages. Is that what you want? Why? When you say your previous accounts have been disrupted, what are you referring to? And what do you want when you say you want your account protected? Vanamonde (talk) 14:47, 10 November 2017 (UTC)

WikiCup 2018
So the 2017 WikiCup has come to an end. Congratulations to the winner, to the other finalists and to all those who took part. 177 contestants signed up, more than usual, but not all of them submitted entries in the first round. Were editors attracted by the cash prizes offered for the first time this year, or were these irrelevant? Do the rules and scoring need changing for the 2018 WikiCup? The random IP range 213.162.72.* is also causing havoc in the article Hanbok. Can you please put that article under protection too? VeryGoodBoy (talk) 10:18, 22 November 2017 (UTC)
- I agree on a protection, but an admin should check this user, who seems to be a korean(probably oversea korean) ethnic POV pusher. His claims are not supported by the included source nor by historic researches. Even the source mention 86% caucasian burials in the kurgans west of altai mountain and he claim it as a "mongoloid culture" whatever this shoul be... Probably he even start to claim all of central asia as korean like the hwanguk-mrmbers claim... Even in korea they are seen as fringe hypernationalistic organization... See the webpage "koreansentry"... 213.162.72.238 (talk) 12:08, 22 November 2017 (UTC)
- The history of that page shows that you are both being disruptive by edit-warring, which is not okay. I've fully protected the page, as I can see no blatant reason to favor one version over another. Please come to a consensus on the talk page, and use a process such as WP:DRN or an WP:RFC to settle differences that remain. Vanamonde (talk) 13:45, 22 November 2017 (UTC)

Selk'nam Page
It has been suggested by you to take my dispute on the Selk'nam page to the talk page. Which is something I have done 2 times with no response. And now that you protected the page I can't get rid of the "Keyuk Yanten" thing because he edited back before you protected it.
You see, the anonymous user claims Keyuk Yanten to be the last Selk'nam speaker with this article as proof https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2015/03/30/a-loss-for-words
yet the page doesn't show him speaking in Selk'nam at all. Besides, it doesn't show evidence of him being of Selk'nam descent, only personal stories which in reality mean nothing. ¿If they don't want to collaborate or at least defend their stance what else can I do?
If this qualifies as some sort of harassment, I'm sorry, I didn't know nor intended it to be. Tomás Vicente (talk) 17:02, 25 November 2017 (UTC)
- Well, my reading of the new yorker article is somewhat different. The claims made in it may not be accurate, but the article is making the claims it is used for. Which makes this basically a content dispute about whether the material is reliable and how it should be presented. This is not a dispute I will enter as an administrator, and is something you need to sort out on the talk page. If the other user does not respond, you have several options available to you to invite outside scrutiny: you can open an WP:RFC, invite previous contributors to comment on the discussion, try dispute resolution, and so forth. It is absolutely fine to ask me questions to clarify things (as you have done here); what would be bothersome is if you pester me to change my decision after it has been explained to you (which you haven't done, so you're okay so far). AE
Hi, I accidentally typed User:Vanamonde at AE, so I’m not sure if you got pinged when I asked this question of you:
It would be really, really appreciated if you or another uninvolved admin would please answer a fairly straightforward question: assuming arguendo that the second of my two edits was a good faith attempt to change the first edit to meet objections to it, was it “reinstating an edit”? It seems like a reasonable question that I’m asking, and I thought the answer was “no”.
Thanks. Anythingyouwant (talk) 05:07, 27 November 2017 (UTC)
- @Anythingyouwant: My personal reading of that would be "yes". You made an edit, and it was reverted. On a page without the consensus required restriction (ie a less contentious page) adding a modified version of your content may not be a bad idea. On this page, it was a bad idea; you should simply have proposed your new version on the talk, and added it after reaching consensus. I do not necessarily believe you were acting in bad faith, but that also does not necessarily make it okay. Vanamonde (talk) 05:12, 27 November 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks for the reply. If that’s what “reinstating an edit” means, I think they ought to just slap 0RR on these articles. Anyway, I’d be glad in future to treat your “yes” answer as authoritative, assuming the other admins agree with it. Maybe it could also be spelled out in some guideline or template somewhere that “reinstating an edit” includes this scenario. Cheers. Anythingyouwant (talk) 05:24, 27 November 2017 (UTC)

There is one source, a bare URL, that links to a modelling agency. Looks like spam to me. Famousdog (c) 08:09, 29 November 2017 (UTC)
- @Famousdog: It is possible that that reference was placed with promotional intent, but the article itself I cannot see as being unambiguously promotional. I deleted the reference when I removed the CSD tag, and the user may need to be monitored, but I'm not deleting that under CSD. If you still feel it inappropriate, take it to AfD. Skokka Deleted
Hi Vanamonde,
I created the page Skokka but it got deleted because it looked like I was advertising it. I'm new to editing in Wikipedia and according to my talk page you are the deleting administrator to ask for the a retrieval of the text. Since this is my first article I want to learn in the process so if you could send me the text in order to improve it I'd appreciate it. Also a few tips on neutrality would make me some good 'cause I don't want to publish it only for it to be removed again.
Before I end, two questions. First, I found four articles in newspapers that mention Skokka and in my previous version I added two in external links. Should I talk about the press coverage Skokka has gotten and then reference them instead of addind the links in external? And second, in the external links section how do you create a table like I've seen in many article? I wanted to create a table instead of adding each country's link in a list so if it is possible let me know how.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Kind Regards, AnitaDinamita (talk) 10:41, 28 November 2017 (UTC)
- @AnitaDinamita: It's good that you want to rewrite this page to comply with our guidelines. The page as you wrote it, though, was very concerning; it was severely promotional in tone, and it had nothing in the way of reliable sources to satisfy concerns about verifiability and notability. So my suggestion is the following. Read the policies I've linked here carefully, and also read WP:NOTPROMO. After that, if you still think that a page about this website is appropriate for Wikipedia, then find reliable sources you can base your article on, and create a page based entirely on those sources. By starting from scratch in this way, you will avoid all the problems with your first draft. I'm not trying to create additional work for you: but I'm quite certain that if you try to "fix up" your original, it will still have issues with promotional language. Regards, Vanamonde (talk) 11:43, 28 November 2017 (UTC)
- @Vanamonde93: I created a Draft:Skokka so I can edit without it being deleted in case there is something wrong. I know it may be bothersome, but could you please check the draft and tell me if it would be suitable to become an article? I think the neutrality issue has been solved but let me know if you see something wrong or change worthy. If you can't check the draft I will understand it, but thanks anyway. Kind Regards,AnitaDinamita (talk) 12:54, 30 November 2017 (UTC)
- I don't have time to do a full check. This version is better, but you still need to have more sources; a lot of the content in your draft is still unverifiable. Vanamonde (talk) 12:37, 30 November 2017 (UTC)
