Malagasy mountain mouse scheduled for TFA
[edit]This is to let you know that the Malagasy mountain mouse article has been scheduled as today's featured article for October 4, 2018. Please check the article needs no amendments. If you're interested in editing the main page text, you're welcome to do so at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/October 4, 2018, but note that a coordinator will trim the lead to around 1100 characters anyway, so you aren't obliged to do so. Thanks! Jimfbleak - talk to me? 15:13, 6 September 2018 (UTC)
- Jimfbleak, I've been trying for years to get Ucucha to be a bit more poetic in his sciency descriptions of these varmin he works on. I strongly suggest that you all amp up the hype on the front page a bit, and to that end I proposed a rewrite of the first part:
What is brown above and dark gray below, and found in the highlands of Madagascar? You know it--the Malagasy mountain mouse, that adorable mouse-like rodent (NOT A CREEPY RAT) of the family Nesomyidae. Its densely hairy ears are small and round, but its feet are broad and oh, the pads! VERY well developed. Don't look for a tuft on the tip of the tail, but tip-toe along the spine to a delicate, smooth skull with none of those nasty-ass ridges.
What do you think? I smell a winner! Drmies (talk) 02:15, 12 September 2018 (UTC)
- Drmies, that's perfect! Dank writes the blurbs, so let's see if he can resist your golden words (: Jimfbleak - talk to me? 05:31, 12 September 2018 (UTC)
- Jimfbleak, this is going to be a record-breaker. And now you see, I'm sure, why they never let me write anything when I was on ArbCom, haha. Drmies (talk) 20:01, 12 September 2018 (UTC)

- Jimfbleak, Dank, I think something has gone wrong with the blurb...Instead of my sparkling crowd-pleaser, it's some semi-scientific chunk of prose with facts... :( (Ucucha, congrats again.) Drmies (talk) 14:41, 4 October 2018 (UTC)

ArbCom 2018 election voter message
[edit]Hello, Ucucha. Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 3 December. All users who registered an account before Sunday, 28 October 2018, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Thursday, 1 November 2018 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.
The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
If you wish to participate in the 2018 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:42, 19 November 2018 (UTC)
The file File:Ex 1% ample.jpg has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
Unused logo with no article used, it's also can't move to commons because of an unused logo will be deleted as of out of project scope.
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.
Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and files for discussion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Willy1018 (talk) 13:38, 17 December 2018 (UTC)
Hi
[edit]My FAC interactions with IanRose and Laser brain led me to this page, where both users routinely declared their abstention from FAC coordinator duties in advance of them either supporting or opposing certain FAC nominations. Can you kindly inform me of the purpose of that page, with respect to Sarastro1 returning after a 3-month break and opposing to 3 separate articles without recusing themselves at that page beforehand, or even now, 3 days later? Cheers. Homeostasis07 (talk) 02:06, 13 January 2019 (UTC)
- I'm no longer active as an FAC coordinator, so it would be better if you took this up with Sarastro1 or the other active coordinators. Ucucha (talk) 04:35, 13 January 2019 (UTC)
Primate taxonomy
[edit]Hi Ucucha. I see you have been less active recently than you used to be. I left a long note on the primate talk page about our primate taxonomy, on which I would like your feedback. We have long used Groves (2005) as our basic source for primate taxonomy, but I think that developments over the past 10-15 years have left this reference far behind, which even Groves acknowledges. We have slowly and somewhat haphazardly updated our primate taxonomy as new research has been published, but I think it is time to acknowledge that we need a new primary source. Possible options include ITIS, Mittermeier, et al (2013) Handbook of the Mammals of the World, volume 3, or Rowe, et al (2016) All the World's Primates. In any case I would like to get your feedback on this, and the resulting changes that could be necessary (e.g., revising common names). Rlendog (talk) 17:25, 7 January 2019 (UTC)
- Someone made another suggestion - the Mammal Diversity Database. Do you have any thoughts on that? Rlendog (talk) 00:50, 13 January 2019 (UTC)
- Not too familiar with it; I remember looking at it when an article about it was published in the Journal of Mammalogy. It's apparently not being updated immediately, so very recent names like Palawanosorex are missing. Ucucha (talk) 04:37, 13 January 2019 (UTC)

duplinks
[edit]Hi there Ucucha. In regards to your script User:Ucucha/duplinks, problems keep coming up on its talk page that have been fixed in my version, User:Evad37/duplinks-alt. I see that your script hasn't been updated since 2011 (except for a couple of fixes from TheDJ in 2017). Would you be mind if your script was redirected to mine (either by yourself, or by an WP:interface admin)? Many users are already using my version [1], but a script redirection would fix problems for users who haven't switched over themselves. Cheers, - Evad37 [talk] 03:10, 24 January 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks for taking over maintenance! I'm happy to redirect the page. Should I redirect just the content page (User:Ucucha/duplinks), or also the JS page itself? Ucucha (talk) 04:29, 24 January 2019 (UTC)
- Can you make the JS page into a "script redirect" as well? i.e. replace the script content with
importScript('User:Evad37/duplinks-alt.js');
Thanks, - Evad37 [talk] 05:09, 24 January 2019 (UTC)

[edit]Administrators must secure their accounts
The Arbitration Committee may require a new RfA if your account is compromised.

Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)
[edit]ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.
Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.
We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.
For the Arbitration Committee, -Cameron11598 21:04, 4 May 2019 (UTC)
Template
[edit]Hi, I have sought some views on nav templates for mammals, and have it in mind to propose many for deletion. The value in creating them, in the absence of other navigation, is hopefully better placed in article space now and they may have outlived their usefulness. There is a view they can be ignored, but I feel compelled to update or delete information if it contradicts the article and this is also a less than satisfactory approach (because it will transclude a contradiction or updated phylogeny in articles I haven't looked at). My personal view is that it fouls what links here, as I often work on several articles at once, but I am one of the few to encounter that problem it seems. What are your thoughts on this?
- As a reader of Wikipedia I often find nav templates useful. When I read about one species, I'm often interested in reading about other related ones. It's true that they pollute "What links here", but that seems worth the benefit for readers. Ucucha (talk) 04:16, 10 May 2019 (UTC)
Sand cat
[edit]Hi Uchucha: I found you in the Wikipedia:Peer review/volunteers list. And since you seem to prefer reviewing pages on small mammals, would you be so kind to have a look at the sand cat page. This one is currently rated C-class, but this was done yeears ago, loong before I worked on this page last autumn and brought into a much better shape. I hope it's worth an A-class now? Looking forward to your reply. -- BhagyaMani (talk) 10:06, 8 May 2019 (UTC)
- Hi BhagyaMani, thanks for your work on this article! I am no longer very active on Wikipedia, so I don't think I'd be the right person to change these assessments. Thank you today for Noronhomys, introduced: "When Amerigo Vespucci visited Fernando de Noronha in 1503, he saw not only lizards with two tails and some snakes, but also "very large rats". It took nearly five centuries before anyone found the large rats back."! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:48, 15 July 2019 (UTC)
Thank you today for Ambondro mahabo, "about a 170-million-year-old broken piece of jaw. It is a highly interesting piece of jaw, because the teeth are the oldest with the modern grinding-and-shearing mammalian tooth pattern, and its 1999 discovery set the stage for one of the major controversies of mammalian paleontology."! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:35, 9 September 2019 (UTC)
Removing tribes from missing mammals list, fair or not?
[edit]Hi Ucucha, user Kaldari recently removed a list of redlinked tribes from a list of missing mammal species. I thought I get your opinion (as I got list of missing mammal species and tribes/sub tribes etc. from your excellent lists) whether this is fair as they seem to suggest they are not notable enough. See: [2]. Kind regards, Calaka (talk) 05:10, 8 October 2019 (UTC)
- I don't feel too strongly about this, but it seems to me that the point of a list of missing mammal taxa is to list missing mammal taxa, so it doesn't make much sense to remove ones that he feels are more likely to be revised away. But really it's up to active WikiProject editors who may want to use the list as a way to find gaps in Wikipedia's coverage that they want to address. Ucucha (talk) 05:00, 9 October 2019 (UTC)
- Thank you for your reply, I appreciate it. I will ask for more opinions in the missing wikiproject talk page. Kind regards.Calaka (talk) 11:18, 9 October 2019 (UTC)

- I just saw you back at FAC ... the best and brightest news of the year !! I am wondering what became of Ucuchabot, and if it is possible to begin flagging DYK noms at FAC again (planning to initiate a discussion about that at WT:FAC as soon as I have a moment). So nice to see your name on my watchlist ... Happy New Year !! SandyGeorgia (Talk) 16:48, 30 December 2020 (UTC)
- Happy (almost) New Year! UcuchaBot must have died when the Toolserver was decommissioned; I still have the code somewhere but I'm not sure it would even still work. I might drop in from time to time to do more reviews (it's good to still see some familiar names!) but I'm not likely to become very active again. Ucucha (talk) 23:40, 30 December 2020 (UTC)
- Even if it is only rarely, it is still just great to see your name pop up, and know you are well :) All the best, SandyGeorgia (Talk) 23:44, 30 December 2020 (UTC)
Minor fixes to userscripts
[edit]Hey Ucucha, it looks like you've got some user scripts in use by others that have bare javascript global wg-style variables. These are phab:T72470 deprecated, and while I don't think there's a timeline for their removal, it's been that way for a while. It's usually a straightforward fix, all uses need to use mw.config.get
, such as converting wgTitle
to mw.config.get('wgTitle')
. There's some more info at mw:ResourceLoader/Migration guide (users)#Global wg variables. I can take care of cleaning them up for you if you like, or give you a full list if you want to handle it, just let me know! ~ Amory (u • t • c) 12:33, 29 January 2021 (UTC)

Reassessment of "? Nycticebus linglom"
[edit]Hi there! I just wanted to point your attention to the fact that I've listed the page ? Nycticebus linglom for reassessment (link to discussion here), as I'm a little worried that it relying on a single source might hint at some problems with notability, and I'd appreciate your input. - Seems to be mostly about the policy question of whether to award the GA rating to a species with very limited sources. I don't really care what the answer to that question is, but thanks for notifying me. Let me know though if there's any issue with the content of the article that I can help with. For what it's worth, I just checked my library and it doesn't look like anything else of importance has been published about this species. Ucucha (talk) 03:03, 26 February 2021 (UTC)

How we will see unregistered users
[edit]Hi!
You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.
When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.
Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.
If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.
We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.
Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Hammond's rice rat scheduled for TFA
[edit]This is to let you know that the Hammond's rice rat article has been scheduled as today's featured article for January 7, 2022. Please check the article needs no amendments. If you're interested in editing the main page text, you're welcome to do so at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/January 7, 2022, but note that a coordinator will trim the lead to around 1000 characters anyway, so you aren't obliged to do so.
For Featured Articles promoted recently, there will be an existing blurb linked from the FAC talk page, which is likely to be transferred to the TFA page by a coordinator at some point.
We suggest that you watchlist Wikipedia:Main Page/Errors from the day before this appears on Main Page. Thanks! Jimfbleak - talk to me? 16:24, 10 December 2021 (UTC)
Thank you today for Mindomys, introduced in 2010: "This is one of the rarest, most isolated, and most endangered of the rice rats. We know virtually nothing about its biology, but there is enough material on the various ways it was classified and on the details of its skull to create an article"! - Happy New Year! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:46, 7 January 2022 (UTC)
New administrator activity requirement
[edit]The administrator policy has been updated with new activity requirements following a successful Request for Comment.
Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:
- Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
- Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period
Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.
