Volunteer opportunity in Bethesda, Thursday, July 16

The Wikimedia Foundation will be conducting an all-day Academy at the National Institutes of Health, in Bethesda, Maryland, on Thursday, July 16. The team that will be teaching at the Academy, a mix of paid staff and volunteers, is looking for four more volunteers to be teaching assistants, providing one-to-one assistance in workshops whenever a workshop participant has a problem following the instructional directions. (We currently have two editors signed up as teaching assistants, and are looking for a total of six.)

The NIH editing workshops are only for two hours, but volunteers are asked to meet the Wikimedia Foundation team at the hotel in Bethesda at about 7:15 a.m. (time to be finalized shortly) and to stay for the entire day, which ends at 4:30 p.m. Lunch will be provided. (The full schedule can be found here.)

The team is not necessarily looking for expert editors (though they are welcome), just people who can help novices who might get stuck when trying to do some basic things. If you've been an editor for at least 3 months, and have done at least 500 edits, you probably qualify.

If you're interested, please send John Broughton an email. If you might be interested, but would like further information, please post a note on his user talk page, so that he can respond there, and others can see what was asked.

Dam reversion

You think that dam only generates a couple of megawatts?? You got a reference for that? - Denimadept (talk) 00:56, 5 August 2009 (UTC)

The text to which you refer talks about power generation for TWO generators that power the plant's operations, NOT the major (15?) generators. Not only is it a logical impossibility for those two generators to produce more power than the total output of the dam, they clearly produce only a tiny fraction of the total. Larry (talk) 04:32, 5 August 2009 (UTC)

Um, no, I'm talking about the whole generation capacity of the dam. See the infobox. (double checks) Okay, I see the issue. Someone substituted the term across the whole article. SOME of them were correct, but some weren't. I'll fix it. - Denimadept (talk) 13:30, 5 August 2009 (UTC)

D.C. Meetup, Saturday, September 26

The 8th DC Meetup dinner will be held this Saturday, September 26, starting at 6 p.m. The event will be at Burma Restaurant (740 6th St, NW near the Gallery Place-Chinatown Metro station). For details or to RSVP if you haven't already, see Wikipedia:Meetup/DC 8. Las Vegas

I noticed you reverted both my edits to edit a composite which was of a much better quality if you ask me. Can you please select some images that you think should be used in the main Las Vegas article and hopefully another one can be made. It would be shame to waste this, ‡ Himalayan ‡ ΨMonastery 22:13, 22 February 2010 (UTC)

Please find me six images then that you think will give a fair balance of the whole city to use in the main Las Vegas article and I'll try to replace it. I agree it was probably too geared towards the strip but isn't that where the big activity is at? We can't have a display of seven images and not have any of the strip either....P.S. nobody else reverted me only you on the strip article too. An ip edited afterwards and was reverted. that's nothing to do with me.. ‡ Himalayan ‡ ΨMonastery 11:30, 23 February 2010 (UTC)

I'm confused. I thought both the MGM hotel, The Venetian and Caesars Palace were on the strip? Please tell me which two are not and I'll replace them with File:LasVegasSign06212005.jpg and File:Las Vegas Strip (view North from Tropicana intersection).jpg. OK? ‡ Himalayan ‡ ΨMonastery 20:17, 23 February 2010 (UTC)

By the looks of it I gather that Golden Nugget Las Vegas and Fremont Casino are not on the strip. If I replace those two with the two proposed above can we please add the composite to the Las Vegas Strip article? ‡ Himalayan ‡ ΨMonastery 20:21, 23 February 2010 (UTC)

I know this now I just said! If I take out Fremont and Golden Nugget and replace with File:LasVegasSign06212005.jpg and File:Las Vegas Strip (view North from Tropicana intersection).jpg can we please readd the composite to the Las Vegas Strip article? File:Casino Royale Sign Las Vegas 2008.jpg would also be OK? The Casino Royale is on the strip I think... ‡ Himalayan ‡ ΨMonastery 20:26, 23 February 2010 (UTC)

I'm rather confused though as to the claim that Las Vegas Strip is not part of the city of Las Vegas. On a google map I do not see a seperate settlement but it looks like a part of the city. It might not me all the city has to offer but to me and most people it is still part of Las Vegas.. Can you explain to me why it is not? ‡ Himalayan ‡ ΨMonastery 21:04, 23 February 2010 (UTC)

I believe a small portion of the Las Vegas Strip is in the City of Las Vegas. Heegoop, 27 May 2010 (UTC)

Las Vegas sign

Hi,

Apparently I was not clear about the basis for my revert of the deletion of that photo of the sign. The person who deleted it is involved in a discussion on the talk page regarding the scope of that article, and whether it should be explicitly expanded to include "the strip" area. Part of the argument favoring the large scope is that the existing article already is an expanded scope, and that photo, which has been there for a long time, is part of that evidence. It's inappropriate to remove it during this discussion. Please restore it. Thank you. --Born2cycle (talk) 23:48, 8 June 2011 (UTC)

7 Up

Hi there, re. your edit here, I was merely writing that such a theory exists, not that it is correct. Thus, imho the soure doesn't have to be particularly reliable. Perhaps I should have written "myth" instead of "theory"? eug (talk) 12:55, 27 March 2012 (UTC)

I see your point, but I think we should keep in mind that we're talking specifically about a part of the article concerning the name of the product, and the origins of the name is a notable part of the article. Since the origins are unclear, I think theories are interesting and even notable. The theory I added about the link with lithium is particularly notable since early versions of 7 Up actually contained lithium. Also, the popularity of the Reddit article shows that this particular theory is "out there", i.e. people know about it. eug (talk) 12:12, 28 March 2012 (UTC)

Follow up on good faith revert

Hello Traveling Man. I wanted to follow up on your comments in reverting my changes on the Boston Marathon bombings article. I changed ...released a video to ...released video, summarizing that more than one video was released. Aside the fact that a preponderance of reliable sources stipulate that "photographs and video were released" without the singular modification, "a video", here is the FBI release itself: [1] Give your attention to the included quote, "Further, on FBI.gov, we have videos of the suspects. The photos and videos are posted for the public and media to use, review and publicize." Thank you for considering these relevant facts. My76Strat (talk) 10:15, 21 April 2013 (UTC)

Hi, My76Strat! I won't have time to examine the new reference until tonight, but I'll trust it supports the existence of multiple videos. That was the main point of my revert: even if a statement is true, it can't be added without a proper reference. Thanks!--Larry (talk) 14:58, 21 April 2013 (UTC)
Yes, I agree. To be honest, I was mistaken in my belief that "video" was both singular and plural; like sheep for example. With such a preponderance of wp:rs reporting it as "a release of video", I wrongly felt its truth was on par with Paris and France. Nevertheless, the source I did include, which is the official press release, is abundantly clear in its prose that "videos" were part of the release. And I thank you for the kind manner in which you discharged your diligence, to maintain the critically important wp:verification that is so necessary for the article's integrity. Very nice work. Best regards, My76Strat (talk) 07:40, 22 April 2013 (UTC)

Picture on the article 'Las Vegas'

Hello Travelling Man. I do agree that the picture I've put is concerning the Strip of Las Vegas and not the city area. But do you really think that the current picture is representative of the city of Las Vegas (moreover, it is written "downtown Las Vegas" over the picture) ? I don't think so. And I find that the current picture is quite badly-framed and the article deserves a better quality picture in my opinion. Sincerely

--Clément Bardot (talk) 12:44, 27 April 2013 (UTC)

The current title - "downtown Las Vegas -- seems apt. It is a picture of the downtown skyline. Of course, better pictures are always welcome!--Larry (talk) 16:55, 27 April 2013 (UTC)

Brunch

Weekend brunch goes on until as late as 3pm. I recently had Sunday brunch in Seattle[2] and Manhattan[3]. The lead doesn't differentiate between weekends and weekdays. Weekend brunches, esp. Sunday brunches, almost always go past noon. Dougweller (talk) 05:48, 23 September 2013 (UTC)

While a restaurant may choose to offer what it calls brunch at any time of day, it's questionable whether that is the accepted definition. If you believe that to be the case, you need to specify a reliable source.--Larry (talk) 15:44, 23 September 2013 (UTC)
Yeah, one of those truth vs verifiable things. But I know there are many, many US restaurants where Sunday brunch goes over noon. Dougweller (talk) 15:54, 23 September 2013 (UTC)
Found one:[4] "BRUNCH A late morning, noontime, or early afternoon meal, esp. on Sunday. MWCD: 1896. Source: BREAKFAST (MWCD: 15th cent ); LUNCH (MWCD: 1812). Brunch is a portmanteau word, a blend of the first two consonants of breakfast and all but the first consonant of lunch. The word developed after the name for the weekday noon meal changed from dinner to lunch and the "weight" of the meal changed from heavy to light. A light lunch was sufficient for a weekday (or Saturday) because it usu. followed a hearty breakfast; but it was redundant on a Sunday because it followed a hearty and also late breakfast. To the managers of hotels and restaurants, it made sense to combine breakfast and lunch into one meal, Sunday brunch, and either to serve only one other meal that day (a late Sunday dinner) or to serve no other meal at all. Brunch is now served between 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 or 3:00 p.m., and it is usu. served buffet style, with visits necessary to several different "stations" for egg dishes, pancakes or waffles, quiches, meats, potatoes, salads, desserts, etc. This menu fits neither a breakfast nor a lunch, but it does fit the two together: a brunch. A champagne brunch is a lavish Sunday brunch at which champagne is served. DAFD; EWPO; FLC; LA; MDWPO; PT." - so it's been an meal that goes over to the afternoon since the late 19th century. Dougweller (talk) 16:13, 23 September 2013 (UTC)
Good work - go for it!--Larry (talk) 16:19, 23 September 2013 (UTC)
Done, but needs more work. Sunday brunch is a pretty big deal in a lot of places, with alcohol playing an important part - more stuff like Mimosas than champagne now I think. Dougweller (talk) 14:23, 25 September 2013 (UTC)

Just to be clear, you are okay with the article being kept and as such are removing your vote? I just wanted to make sure you didn't feel an obligation to redact before I closed the discussion. Go Phightins! 19:59, 3 October 2013 (UTC)

Yes, I am fine with keeping the article. Sorry for the lack of clarity -- I'm feeling my way in the AfD portion of Wikipedia.--Larry (talk) 20:04, 3 October 2013 (UTC)
Excellent, thanks. I just wanted to make sure. If you ever have any questions related to AfD, don't hesitate to let me know. Happy editing. Go Phightins! 21:23, 3 October 2013 (UTC)

Are you free on Sunday? Join us for a special Wikimedia DC WikiSalon!

Wikimedia DC invites you to join us for a special WikiSalon at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Library's Digital Commons Center. You stated you removed my photo because it is not a useful addition to this article. I find this to be false because this picture shows a waterfall in Havasu Creek that is not currently shown on this page, and this page is about the waterfalls in Havasu Creek. Have you personally been to Havasu Creek? Because if you have you would know cliff jumping in Havasu creek is VERY popular and is also not shown or talked about on this page. With this being said, I do not agree with your actions.

Cliff jumping may indeed be a popular (albeit proscribed) activity. If so, it belongs on a travel web site -- not in a Wikipedia article that is talking about Havasu Creek. Larry (talk) 04:25, 4 December 2013 (UTC)
Did you read that I stated "I find this to be false because this picture shows a waterfall in Havasu Creek that is not currently shown on this page, and this page is about the waterfalls in Havasu Creek." Thus the photo I added is contributing info that was not previously present. There just happens to be a cliff jumper in the photo that is not blocking the stated waterfall whatsoever.

--Jguff330 (talk) 06:00, 4 December 2013 (UTC)

Really? Both pictures focus on a cliff jumper, as even your captions admit. If one ignores the cliff jumper, one picture (the five part shot) would be ridiculous, and the other would be just another mediocre shot that doesn't distinguish itself from thousands of others. Wikipedia isn't for storage of galleries of photos. Larry (talk) 15:13, 4 December 2013 (UTC)
I find it weird that you say the photo "doesn't distinguish itself from thousands of others" when I have clearly said two times now that this picture shows a waterfall in Havasu Creek that is not currently shown on this page. I don't understand if you think your reasoning is immaculate, if you are jealous of the photo, or if you simply can't read but either way I proved your reasoning wrong each time. AJ Hackett

Hello Larry. I am a professional writer (journalist) who has been contracted by a staff member at AJ Hackett International to write a biography on AJ Hackett and the History of Bungy for ajhackett.com. I do not know AJ Hackett personally, nor have I ever met him. I have written my information based on existing information as provided by AJ Hackett International, other articles and a video interview of AJ Hackett himself. I have been asked to update the Wikipedia page because much of the information that you have reinstated is actually incorrect. I am, however, new to Wikipedia uploading so would appreciate patience with my verification, instead of a blanket refusal of my correct information. Thank you. CeliaCrosbie (talk) 03:16, 3 February 2014 (UTC)CeliaCrosbieCeliaCrosbie (talk) 03:16, 3 February 2014 (UTC)

The connection you describe to AJ Hackett constitutes what Wikipedia considers a conflict of interest. Making changes to Hackett's article is strongly discouraged. Except for obvious corrections of fact, such as place of birth (which must still be supported by valid citation), it is recommended that you ask for changes to be made on the A.J. Hackett talk page. It's also worth noting that any information provided by AJ Hackett International, or a video interview, should be used only for basic facts; other than that, those sources are not considered reliable by Wikipedia. --Larry (talk) 12:29, 3 February 2014 (UTC)

An exciting month of wiki events!

Hello there,

I am pleased to say that April will be a very exciting month for Wikipedia in Washington, DC. We have a lot of different events coming up, so you will have a lot to choose from.

First, a reminder that our second annual Women in the Arts Edit-a-Thon will take place on Sunday, March 30 at the National Museum of Women in the Arts.

Coming up in April, we have our first-ever Open Government WikiHack with the Sunlight Foundation on April 5–6! We are working together to use open government data to improve the Wikimedia projects, and we would love your help. All are welcome, regardless of coding or editing experience. We will also be having a happy hour the day before, with refreshments courtesy of the Sunlight Foundation.

On Friday, April 11 we are having our first edit-a-thon ever with the Library of Congress. The Africa Collection Edit-a-Thon will focus on the Library's African and Middle East Reading Room. It'll be early in the morning, but it's especially worth it if you're interested in improving Wikipedia's coverage of African topics.

The following day, we are having our second annual Wiki Loves Capitol Hill training. We will discuss policy issues relevant to Wikimedia and plan for our day of outreach to Congressional staffers that will take place during the following week.

There are other meetups in the works, so be sure to check our meetup page with the latest. I hope to see you at some of these events!

All the best,
James Hare

Wikipedia and YOUR History: Taking Control of the Internet

Come one and come all. To a presentation at the Laurel Historical Society about how you can help verify, validate, and edit the information that is on the front line of local history.

Picture your self leading the masses to improve Wikimedia one article at a time.
  • Show the Internet who is the better editor.
  • Be the creator of culture that you know you are.
  • Spread the knowledge of noteworthy people who no one but you cares about.
  • Lead the charge to a better Wikipedia --- eventually.

Wikipedia and YOUR History: Taking Control of the Internet

See you at the Laurel Pool Room, 9th and Main Street, Laurel, MD on Thursday, September 11, 2014 at 7:00 PM EST. See http://www.meetup.com/Wikimedia-DC/events/205494212/ for more information. Geraldshields11 (talk) 02:13, 6 September 2014 (UTC)

Wikimedia DC invites revolutionaries, free thinkers, and other sundry editors to a DC WikiSalon

The WikiSalon is a special meetup usually held during the first and third full weeks of every month, from 7 PM to 9 PM. It's an informal gathering of Wikimedia enthusiasts, who come together to discuss Wikimedia wikis and collaboratively edit. There's no set agenda, and guests are welcome to recommend articles for the group to edit or edit on their own.

If you're coming by Metro, the closest station is Dupont Circle (on the Red Line). If you're driving, a lot of parking opens up downtown after 6:30 PM, so finding a parking space (even a free one) should be easy. Once you've found the building, go to Cove on the second floor. We will be in the conference room.

When: Wednesday, September 17, 2014 at 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM

Where: The Cove, Dupont Circle, 1730 Connecticut Avenue NW, 2nd floor, 20009, DC

"Sister Cities International no longer recognizes any sister cities in Nevada"

Hi! Uhm, what? :O -- Horst-schlaemma (talk) 21:18, 17 September 2014 (UTC)

The source specified in claiming that there were sister cities was Sister Cities International. If you check that reference, you'll see that Las Vegas is not part of the Sister Cities program. If I understand things correctly, it used to be, but no longer participates. Thus, Las Vegas has no sister cities. I've looked for other reliable sources that might show the existence of one or more sister cities, but can find no recent references. --Larry (talk) 22:11, 17 September 2014 (UTC)
Hum, well. Shouldn't there be something? What about the former sister cities, any reaction? -- Horst-schlaemma (talk) 22:40, 17 September 2014 (UTC)
That gets pretty tricky. Before I deleted the list of sister cities, I did a little googling, including the .gov site. I didn't find much, other than North Las Vegas (not exactly what we mean by sister city) and a reference to what sounded like a city, but wasn't. I also ran across a really, really old article (1999?) where some official complained about the cost of the program, but I didn't find anything else about it. In terms of listing past sister cities, we'd still need a reliable source, and I don't know how to find one of those. --Larry (talk) 23:27, 17 September 2014 (UTC)

Added another image to the Las Vegas Main image discussion.

Looking to get your thoughts on it!--Mark Miller (talk) 01:33, 29 September 2014 (UTC)

@Mark Miller: Thanks for the heads up! I've replied on the Las Vegas talk page (and have it on my watchlist) --Larry (talk) 03:14, 29 September 2014 (UTC)

Las Vegas temperatures

You reverted my edit to the peak daytime temperature in Las Vegas, which I posted as 115°F, and you said is wrong. This is my nineteenth year living here. How long have you lived here? ETO Buff (talk) 08:48, 2 October 2014 (UTC)

Your residency in Las Vegas is irrelevant. When editing Wikipedia, the only thing that matters is being able to provide a reliable citation. --Larry (talk) 16:09, 2 October 2014 (UTC)
