A GOCE barnstar for you!
The Modest Barnstar | ||
I award this barnstar to Torchiest for copy editing nine articles for a total of 4665 words in the GOCE March copy edit drive. Thanks for participating! --BDD (talk) 17:56, 3 April 2013 (UTC) |
GOCE barnstars
I gave barnstars to those editors I was assigned leaderboard awards to, as well as to Memento mori. I also worked on the {{GOCE Silver Star Award}} so it's somewhat more useful :-). All the best, Miniapolis 23:15, 3 April 2013 (UTC)
- Sorry I missed your note on the coordinators' talk page about distributing the barnstars. Hope I didn't mess you up too much! All the best, Miniapolis 01:12, 4 April 2013 (UTC)
- Haha, no worries. I thought it would be easier to divide it that way; since the word count awards are easier to crank out, I thought I'd take a double load and do just those. We can do it the same way next time, now that we're on the same page. Cheers. :) —Torchiest talkedits 01:16, 4 April 2013 (UTC)

Question
Hi Torchiest,
For the April Blitz, only articles that are copy edited between April 15–21 count, right?
Thanks,
Gold Standard 21:57, 4 April 2013 (UTC)
- Yes, that's right. The blitzes are shorter, more experimental drives where we are trying different themes. —Torchiest talkedits 01:10, 5 April 2013 (UTC)
- Ok, thanks! That's what I thought. Gold Standard 02:00, 5 April 2013 (UTC)

I have reverted your changes at that article since this product is abandoned and discontinued. Or do I miss any current news? mabdul 18:22, 5 April 2013 (UTC)
- Oh, my thought process on this was that even though it is no longer maintained or updated, it still exists. Just like a book written decades ago is still described with the present tense, even if the author is dead and it's out of print. —Torchiest talkedits 14:20, 6 April 2013 (UTC)
Copy edit request
If you can't do this I understand but I'm wondering if you could copy edit Chrono Trigger: Crimson Echoes. I've been reading up on its FAC and there have been some prose problems raised so I just wanna get them addressed. GamerPro64 16:56, 6 April 2013 (UTC)
- Sure, I'll try to go over it later today. —Tourchiest talkedits 17:32, 6 April 2013 (UTC)
- Well, I started working on it, but honestly, the plot section is utterly confusing. I've never played any of the Chrono Trigger games, and I can't figure out what is happening. The first paragraph of the plot section introduces a ton of names and locations, but doesn't really explain what most of them are. The characters section has a similar problem. If the article is going to pass FAC, it needs to be a lot clearer for someone who doesn't know the game. The gameplay section also needs to be expanded some, I think. —Torchiest talkedits 02:08, 7 April 2013 (UTC)
- I finished. The rest of the article is in good shape, but those sections need to be rewritten for clarity by someone familiar with the plot of the game. Sorry I can't help more with that part. —Torchiest talkedits 02:14, 7 April 2013 (UTC)
- That can be a problem since the game was never really released. So its hard getting clarity for it. GamerPro64 04:24, 7 April 2013 (UTC)
- Oh, I got the impression that a more or less complete version of it leaked. —Torchiest talkedits 04:47, 7 April 2013 (UTC)
- Yes but I've never really played it myself. And even though its been said there's a version you can play from start to end I don't know where to find it. GamerPro64 05:25, 7 April 2013 (UTC)

GOCE
Thank you very much for taking the time to review some of my GOCE contributions. If it's not too much trouble, could you give me some brief feedback on what improvements from my part need most attention? I appreciate it! FoCuSandLeArN (talk) 18:16, 7 April 2013 (UTC)
- Sure. Most of the errors I've seen regard confusion about the use of italics. You should not italicize company names, but you should italicize works such as books, movies, and TV shows. For individual TV episodes, or articles or essays in larger works, use quotation marks. The biggest problem I've seen so far was in Swami Abhayananda, where you left a huge quotation that covered a lot of tangential ground. I cut almost all of it. In Injimedu, you left in some fairly significant grammatical problems. See what I fixed here. The first sentence was pretty confusing. Also avoid leaving phrases like "630 years ago", since that depends on when it was written. I changed it to the approximate year. I also tend to clean up references and remove silly stuff if it is unreferenced, such as things being the highest statues on hills and such. You tagged them, which is fine. —Torchiest talkedits 22:29, 7 April 2013 (UTC)
- Thank you very much. Your comments are invaluable. Yes, that contained some bizarre writing, I have to say. I won't be participating in any future drives, just editing the occasional article I stumble upon that needs urgent care. Cheers! FoCuSandLeArN (talk) 23:14, 7 April 2013 (UTC)
F&L checks
Hi. I took pity on you and chipped in with a few checks, but ... Yes, many editors would have done better copy edits, but in all the articles I looked at, I felt that he left them better than he found them -- often considerably better. He was particularly good at removing puffery and promotion. I don't feel we really need to slog through all 135, do we? Cheers, --Stfg (talk) 14:05, 8 April 2013 (UTC)
- Yes, you're probably right. We've checked just over a third and have found four that were problematic, and even those were relatively easily fixed. I'm willing to be done with the whole thing. —Torchiest talkedits 15:00, 8 April 2013 (UTC)
- Sorry to interfere, but perhaps a word with Ryan Vesey is in order? Tell me if I'm out of place. Regards, FoCuSandLeArN (talk) 15:03, 8 April 2013 (UTC)
- Considering what you've been finding, and some of the other edits I've seen since by FoCuSandLeArN, I think the articles I reviewed must have been on a bad day. I'm fine with the checking ending. Ryan Vesey 01:01, 9 April 2013 (UTC)

HighBeam for D&D articles (part 6d)
And here we are, however many months later, finally wrapping up all the D&D video games. I think this topic area, by far, had the most hits from HighBeam when it comes to D&D. Bio articles also got a lot of hits, but I don't think there are anywhere near as many as what we had for VGs. I spent quite a bit of time going through the remaining categories to see what I could find hits on, so it is up to you how much more work you are going to be willing to do as far as continuing on.
After the punishment I gave you with all the hits for the first NWN, this one should hopefully be a relative breeze. :) On previous articles that were already GA's, you didn't find much usable info, so there might not be much to do here either. Still, if you check, you never know what you will find.

- Have you had a chance to take a look at any of these yet? :) BOZ (talk) 20:32, 6 May 2013 (UTC)
- I just looked over the first five. One had a good little detail on gameplay, and the other was a tiny AP-style fluff piece that was only one paragraph. The other three don't have a lot of great details, but are reviews with some good comments on pros and cons and such. I'm debating adding more to the reception section. It's already decent, with all the big boys in the world of video game sites accounted for, but there's always room for more, I guess. What do you think? —Torchiest talkedits 02:45, 7 May 2013 (UTC)
- I'll agree that the reception section is pretty hefty, so I'm going to trust your judgement on what to include. I'd say that, obviously, any unique comments not already expressed should be added. It also might not hurt if you find any similar commentary to add another citation to existing statements, since one more citaiton couldn't hurt, but at the same time it's not the end of the word if we don't have 5 citations for one sentence. ;) BOZ (talk) 17:16, 7 May 2013 (UTC)
- I'll take another crack at this over the weekend. I've been spending my weeknights playing a lot of Skyrim lately. ;) —Torchiest talkedits 03:35, 10 May 2013 (UTC)
- How's Skyrim going? :) BOZ (talk) 02:18, 19 May 2013 (UTC)
- Heh, it's going great. Okay, I just checked the second half of these. Almost all of them were trivial or contained no new details. A lot of them were about other topics and just mentioned NWN2 as a sidenote. —Torchiest talkedits 13:57, 19 May 2013 (UTC)
- Good deal - a little was better than nothing. Thanks for checking. The other three articles were GA's too, so they may be fairly complete and not require much, which means - as sad as it may sound - we will very soon be done with the D&D video game articles. BOZ (talk) 14:58, 19 May 2013 (UTC)
- Okay, checked over the rest of them and added more to the reception section, which honestly isn't really that good and surprisingly negatively slanted considering the game had a generally positive reception (and was amazing in my opinion). We'll have to put that on our super long list to go dig better details out of the sites like IGN and GameSpot to get more info. —Torchiest talkedits 15:48, 19 May 2013 (UTC)
- Yeah, especially if we want to get it up to FA. If I'm not too busy later today, I can give that a look. Great work today. BOZ (talk) 17:11, 19 May 2013 (UTC)

Any luck with the other three articles yet? :) BOZ (talk) 00:08, 29 May 2013 (UTC)
- Just went over them, and it was super slim pickings. For Mask of the Betrayer, two of the links were to the same article, which only had one little bit worth adding. The other was a single paragraph. All the links for Storm of Zehir and Mysteries of Westgate were just announcements about development being completed or the game being released, followed by essentially reprints of company press releases, so they had no good depth, unfortunately. —Torchiest talkedits 02:40, 29 May 2013 (UTC)
- OK then, that wraps up all I had for D&D video games articles. :) Great work - I'll take a look at what else I had, but I think we could wrap up what I found for novels pretty quickly. BOZ (talk) 03:18, 29 May 2013 (UTC)

GOCE Current Blitz Help
Hi there!
Could you please look over my Copy Edit of GoldenEye: Rogue Agent which was my first major Copy Edit, and which I am counting towards the current GOCE Blitz AnthonyW90 (talk) 20:46, 15 April 2013 (UTC)
- I've looked over your edits there, and while most are improvements, a few of what your changes should probably be undone. The biggest thing I noticed was your addition of the weapons list. While there's nothing wrong grammatically with it, that level of detail should be avoided. See WP:GAMEGUIDE for more on that. In the infobox, you changed the targets for EA LA to point to the new name, Danger Close Games. That is a borderline WP:EASTEREGG, which we should also avoid. I'd personally change them to EA Los Angeles, since a non-gamer won't understand the abbreviation at all, and let the redirect do the rest. You did the opposite, and made the article better, when you added context to the group whose name is based on SPECTRE and removed the easter egg link.
- "Plot" is pretty standard section title for video game articles; I don't think adding campaign is necessary for that section title. Something else to generally avoid is using passive voice instead of active voice, such as the place where you changed "The game's ending heavily suggested a sequel as well." to "The game's ending was heavily suggestive of a sequel." The first sentence isn't great, but I'd probably have changed it to "The game's ending hinted at a sequel as well." Something else I see there is "heavily". It usually (heh) improves writing to get rid of filler adverbs. Mark Twain once wrote, "Substitute 'damn' every time you're inclined to write 'very;' your editor will delete it and the writing will be just as it should be."
- Having said all that, your work is pretty good, and you didn't introduce any serious problems to the article. I see mostly stylistic issues. Thanks for helping out with the blitz! —Torchiest talkedits 13:00, 16 April 2013 (UTC)
- Thank you for your feedback, I have made a few amendments to the article in light of what you have said. On the 'Easter Egg' note for Danger Close Games, I had read over the WP:EASTEREGG guidance and thought that my edit made sense - since the game was made by EA LA that is what the 'text' needed to say, but the company EA LA has been re-named Danger Close Games I figured it wasn't a problem to avoid the re-direct by using the piping on the link. I have returned it to being EA LA, but did make the change to 'EA Los Angeles' (I think it is safe to assume people know of EA Games?) AnthonyW90 (talk) 09:54, 17 April 2013 (UTC)

GOCE April blitz
Hi. Stfg informs me (User talk:Acabashi#Heads up) that this blitz is not for stuff on the requests page. This worries me a tad as I've spent a lot of time on the requests over the last week. I notice that on the current blitz page that it says the blitz is "to reduce the number of articles on our requests page" - and not mentioning a particular month to go for - and yet further down "edit as many articles as possible from March 2013". Which is it - one of them or both ? Be glad of some clarification. Thanks. Acabashi (talk) 23:36, 19 April 2013 (UTC)
- Argh, that was a mistake. We normally copy paste blitzes and drives from old events and then update them, but it looks like that was missed. Go ahead and submit the work you've done on requests, but if you do any more just go off the March 2013 list. Thanks, and sorry for the mix-up. —Torchiest talkedits 00:34, 20 April 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks and Phew! - I thought I'd wasted the over 50 hours I spent on those 4 critters - wouldn't have been wasted anyway - good practice. Acabashi (talk) 00:53, 20 April 2013 (UTC)
- Oh, ouch. Sorry, Acabashi, I wasn't aware of this problem. Torchiest, User:Milesandkilometrestogo also removed one from the list after I gave a similar tip-off on 14th April, so I've invited him/her to restore it just now. --Stfg (talk) 08:54, 20 April 2013 (UTC)

WikiCup 2013 April newsletter
We are a week into Round 3, but it is off to a flying start, with Sven Manguard (submissions) claiming for the high-importance Portal:Sports and Portal:Geography (which are the first portals ever awarded bonus points in the WikiCup) and Cwmhiraeth (submissions) claiming for a did you know of sea, the highest scoring individual did you know article ever submitted for the WikiCup. Round 2 saw very impressive scores at close; first place Casliber (submissions) and second place Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) both scored over 1000 points; a feat not seen in Round 2 since 2010. This, in part, has been made possible by the change in the bonus points rules, but is also testament to the quality of the competition this year. Pool C and Pool G were most competitive, with three quarters of participants making it to Round 3, while Pool D was the least, with only the top two scorers making it through. The lowest qualifying score was 123, significantly higher than last year's 65, 2011's 41 or even 2010's 100.
The next issue of The Signpost is due to include a brief update on the current WikiCup, comparing it to previous years' competitions. This may be of interest to current WikiCup followers, and may help bring some more new faces into the community. We would also like to note that this round includes an extra competitor to the 32 advertised, who has been added to a random pool. This extra inclusion seems to have been the fairest way to deal with a small mistake made before the beginning of this round, but should not affect the competition in a large way. If you have any questions or concerns about this, please feel free to contact one of the judges.
A rules clarification: content promoted between rounds can be claimed in the round after the break, but not the round before. The case in point is content promoted on 29/30 April, which may be claimed in this round. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Drow houses
Hey there, this is probably a longshot, but could you check to see if you have any sources for either the subjects of House Do'Urden or House Baenre or any of the characters listed on those pages. They are all characters from various Forgotten Realms novels, so they might be mentioned in book reviews, you never know. BOZ (talk) 03:32, 12 May 2013 (UTC)
- Sorry, the only magazines I have are Dragon, which I think you have all the issues I have on disc already. I managed to squeeze one source out of HighBeam for some information on House Do'Urden, but it's barely more than a trivial mention. —Torchiest talkedits 13:14, 12 May 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks, a little is more than nothing. I do have all the Dragon issues on the archive CDs, but unfortunately the computer I have them on is down for the moment and possibly for a while. BOZ (talk) 13:20, 12 May 2013 (UTC)
- Did you notice anything in your searches regarding the various characters listed on either page that might be useful? For example, Paul Erik did find a note for Liriel Baenre. BOZ (talk) 22:14, 13 May 2013 (UTC)
- Everything for Do'Urden I found was about Drizzt, and I can't find anything for House Baenre. Sorry. :( —Torchiest talkedits 12:40, 14 May 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks for checking! BOZ (talk) 14:05, 14 May 2013 (UTC)

Today's articles for improvement
Were you aware of the existence of this project? BOZ (talk) 14:13, 14 May 2013 (UTC)
- What do you think of that? BOZ (talk) 11:46, 15 May 2013 (UTC)
- Whoops, forgot to respond earlier. Yeah, I've seen it before. I think Northamerica1000 left me a note about it a couple months ago. Seems like a cool idea. Looks like it's been active for five months or so now. Have you been monitoring articles that get to the schedule page? Are they being measurably improved? —Torchiest talkedits 12:30, 15 May 2013 (UTC)
- I don't know, I just found it a couple of days ago. It looks like they just switched to a new batch of articles that same day. I'm going to keep an eye on it through the week to see how changes progress. There is a lot of potential with something like this. I was actually working on a proposal for a process pretty similar to that, but it looks like they beat me to it. :) BOZ (talk) 13:46, 15 May 2013 (UTC)
- Oh, here we go, this should give you an idea of the jump in activity level, looking at the latest batch that was started on May 13: [24] BOZ (talk) 14:38, 15 May 2013 (UTC)
- Hm, looks like about 200 edits in the last five days, which is pretty good. Definitely some improvement happening. :) —Torchiest talkedits 21:37, 18 May 2013 (UTC)
