ZX Spectrum references
Hi Thumperwad, I am contacting you because I can see that you have a large number of edits on the ZX Spectrum article, and so I am hoping you can either provide insight here or at least point me to someone who might. My question concerns which of the various source materials covering the ZX Spectrum are the most respected and otherwise notable. I've been engaged in a recent series of conversations where the argument has been advanced that there is over-coverage of the Spectrum version of some games. I'm opposed to the wholescale blanking of Spectrum version scores, but as per WP:DUE, the over-coverage argument is not without merit. The articles concerned here use the following Spectrum sources:
- ACE
- Computer and Video Games
- Computer Gamer
- CRASH
- Sinclair User
- The Games Machine
- Your Computer
- Your Sinclair
Can you tell me which of these are the most industry-respected and notable publications? And if not, do you know who would have an opinion on this? If you have no idea then I'll post at WP:VG/S. Thank you. -Thibbs (talk) 14:41, 25 September 2012 (UTC)
- Speaking only from my own experience buying the things over twenty years ago, C&VG is the most reliable of the lot (it was the best-selling gamer mag in the UK for years), while ACE, CRASH, Sinclair User and Your Sinclair were probably the best-known specialist mags. I'd drop a note at WP:VG/S anyway. For what it's worth, until the 90s the Spectrum port was often the highest-selling in a given market owing to its ubiquity (at least in the UK), and user:Asmpgmr's characterisation of it as an "obscure system" indicates the limitations to his understanding of the video games market of the 1980s. He should certainly be warned not to continue summarily removing sourced information on arcade game ports from their articles unless a consensus is reached to do so. WP:DUE does not mandate that we either include reviews for every platform or for none of them: it simply means that we should not go over-the-top in emphasising a given platform's importance. A couple of review links and a short summary is perfectly acceptable coverage. Chris Cunningham (user:thumperward) (talk) 14:53, 25 September 2012 (UTC)
- OK, that helps quite a bit. Thanks. I've posted basically the same question to WP:VG/S now here.
- As far as Asmpgmr is concerned, he's apparently taken our guideline-based disagreement really to heart and he's ordered me not to communicate with him. I find it extremely childish, but I'm not interested in antagonizing him or driving him away because I think he has the potential to be a real asset here if only he can learn to collaborate with his peers. And as he appears to be rejecting everything I say without even considering it (he blanks every message I leave on his talk and he seems to be ignoring the ongoing community discussion), I don't think my words would have any effect on him at all anyway.
- Depending on how the discussion at WT:VG goes, I do think I may try to restore some of the material Asmpgmr blanked, but I hope that restoring only part of the coverage should show him that I am not trying to undermine the articles. Hopefully he'll have cooled down a little by then. If not then I guess he should be given a warning. I intend to shift the other less-notable RS-based Spectrum coverage to the articles' talk pages so that they can be added later if need be. Anyway thanks again for your help. -Thibbs (talk) 17:21, 25 September 2012 (UTC)
- He's a new editor, and from what I've seen of his posts he's got the fairly common new-user attitude that he should be able to pull rank based on professed personal experience. That doesn't excuse his attitude towards you (which you weathered wonderfully, by the way), and it's unlikely to earn him favours elsewhere either. If you need any more help with this, let me know. Cheers. Chris Cunningham (user:thumperward) (talk) 17:38, 25 September 2012 (UTC)

Thumperward, encyclopedic means "covering a wide range of knowledge; comprehensive". What specific new topics do you think should be added when you say it should be more encyclopedic? Can you give any specific example of where it reads like a personal reflection? I don't have the vaguest idea, what you are talking about when you make this assertion. RHB100 (talk) 00:08, 3 October 2012 (UTC)

The article has a lot of problems right now. Chris Cunningham (user:thumperward) (talk) 00:10, 3 October 2012 (UTC)
