Copy edit feedback

Thanks for your copy edits in the March copy-editing drive. I took a quick look at your first two submissions and have a few notes for you. Please receive this constructively.

  • Jauhar
    • At the top of the wikicode for the article, it has {{Use dmy dates|date=April 2017}}. This signifies the preferred date format for the article as day month year. Part of copy editing is to make sure that the styles in the article are consistent, including date formats. You were correct to remove the ordinal in 10th March, but should have stated this as 10 March instead of March 10. Later in the same paragraph, you left 21 July, 1810, which is an incorrect dmy format, as the commas are not needed around the year. See MOS:DATE for more information.
    • You changed groom-to-be to "husbands-to-be". Husband is used more in the article, so I can understand changing to that, but it should not have been pluralized.
    • Both Man Singh of Marwar and Man Singh (a redirect to Man Singh I) are linked in the paragraph. If you investigate these, the latter is from a period about two centuries earlier, and is certainly a mistake and should be unlinked.
    • There is also a recursive link back to the article itself, which should be removed.
    • The paragraph is unsourced, so I added:‹The template Fake citation needed is being considered for merging.› [citation needed]
    • I've made corrections for the above, and rewrote a bit because I found it confusing. You can view my changes in the article history.
  • Hisako Kanemoto
    • hailing from the southern part of Japan’s Honshu island, Okayama Prefecture hailing is informal and the extra word doesn't provide any additional information, so it's best left out. I'm also not convinced that it's necessary to give a geographic description of the boundaries of Okayama Prefecture; we don't do that when mentioning a U.S. state. For encyclopedic writing, it's almost always better to state something in fewer words, especially in the lead of an article.
      • You introduced a curly apostrophe there (MOS:CURLY). Please check your software settings and be careful to avoid that.
    • Similarly, changing attendedwas studying at adds unnecessary words. Copy editing should tend to reduce the overall word count. "Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away." – Antoine de Saint-Exupery
    • Production Baobab we use italics for emphasis, and don't use this style for the names of companies (MOS:ITALIC). The capital letters signify a proper name and "agency" explains what it is.
    • In the early days informal tone.
    • Juri Aikawa again, no italics needed.
    • You changed she used the pseudonym Juri Aikawa. In 2009 she made her anime debut under this name in Sora no Manimani, after being selected as the main character Shirleyshe became known by her stage name Juri Aikawa. In 2009, she made an anime debut with her nickname in Sora no Manimani, after being selected by an audience vote I think this introduced some confusion. Be consistent: don't define something as a stage name and then call it a nickname. Removing the italic styling hides the fact that this is the title of a work (MOS:MAJORWORK), and I found some of the phrasing to be a little rough.

You might want to take a look at the files we have at Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors/How to and familiarize yourself with the Wikipedia:Manual of Style. We have developed a particular style as an international online encyclopedia, and copy editors are expected to know more of it than the average editor. After reading some of that, and checking the diffs for the changes I made to your first two copy edits, please review your other copy edits for anything you might have missed. Note that the copy edit tag is still present on Tamil cuisine so I'm not sure if you were finished with it. Please {{ping|Reidgreg}} if you have any questions or comments. – Reidgreg (talk) 17:00, 13 March 2020 (UTC)

Prosesize script

Hi @Reidgreg:, how to count words in ce? Example: Completed Mohit Chauhan (611). Thanks TheBirdsShedTears (talk) 08:59, 14 March 2020 (UTC)

We use a script to obtain the wordcount. It's information page is at User:Dr pda/prosesize. To install the script, go to Special:MyPage/common.js and add the following to the end:

// User:Dr pda/prosesize
mw.loader.load('//en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User%3ADr+pda%2Fprosesize.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript');

(The first line is a comment providing a link to the script's identification page, to help with later troubleshooting if necessary.)
Save the changes. Then, so long as javascript is working in your browser, you should get a little Page size option under Tools on the left sidebar when you load most Wikipedia pages.
Next, you go to the page you want a wordcount for. In this case, we want the pre-copyedit version of the page, so we take that from the page history, here. Load that and click on Page size in the left sidebar. The script should give you a count of 611 words (3567 bytes). It will also highlight the text that it's counting so that you can verify that it's counting what you copy edited (in some cases you may have to adjust upwards or downwards, or make a manual count). The script isn't perfect, but it works most of the time.
I hope that works! Let me know if you have any problems. – Reidgreg (talk) 12:10, 14 March 2020 (UTC)

More feedback

We generally consider a copy edit to be complete when it is free of grammatical, punctuation and spelling errors, and compliant with the Manual of Style (MOS). I don't want to overwhelm you with the MOS, there's a lot of it, but the basics should be there so that the article has consistent styling throughout and looks like other Wikipedia articles. We like copy editing to be thorough, and would rather see you submit five complete copy edits than twenty halfway-finished copy edits. We'll probably make allowances since you're a new copy editor, but we're technically supposed to penalize your wordcount for submitting incomplete work. I'll try to review a couple more to point out some things to improve:

  • FileZigZag
    • online document conversion website is it redundant to say that a website is "online"? I removed that word and hyphenated the compound modifier document-conversion.
    • Group digits in Western thousands-based style: 3200 → 3,200. This does not apply to years (e.g.: March 2020). (see MOS:NUMERAL)
    • is used for both businesses and consumers for → by. Otherwise it sounds like it's converting businesses and consumers (into what, I don't know).
    • It can convert It → FileZigZag. Use its full name on first mention in the article body.
    • It is a free to use service. Hyphenate the compound modifier free-to-use. This can make it a little easier to read and avoid momentary confusion, as some of those words can be used as verbs. (MOS:HYPHEN)
  • Mohit Chauhan
    • Could use some attention to spacing at references, capital letters, MOS:DASH, MOS:ITALIC, MOS:MAJORWORKS. It could also use a little bit of tone work for informal language, but the other issues are more essential.
  • Tamil cuisine
    • Again, needs attention to capital letters, punctuation at references, possibly MOS:FOREIGNITALIC, MOS:BOLD, and lists. I didn't find a quick link for this, but list separators should consistently be either a spaced en-dash, comma or colon (some more information at MOS:LISTFORMAT).
  • Choudwar
    • I think you accidentally changed the link in the lead Odishadisha, which is in error. Also, MOS:ACRO, italics, punctuation at references, and I'm afraid that there's some rough and confusing phrasing throughout.

Feel free to ask me if you have any questions, or you can ask at the drive's talk page: Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors/Backlog elimination drives/March 2020. – Reidgreg (talk) 12:53, 20 March 2020 (UTC)

Some notes on your copy edit of Werrason. This article was as rough translation with sourcing problems, so probably not worth spending a lot of time on it, but it's a good article for practise.

  • is a Congo musician → is a Congolese musician
  • in his local church Kinshasa   in his local church in Kinshasa
  • founder of Wenge Maison Mère (WMM) → founder of Wenge Maison Mère [fr] (WMM) – this is the proper way of linking to another wikipedia, though fixing this isn't a requirement of copy editing.
  • There's a layout problem: The lead wasn't constructed as the article lead but was simply at the top of the article when section headers were added below it. I added a section header "Early life and education" at the logical break and added a {{lead too short}} cleanup template.
  • Once you have that Early section, you can apply MOS:SURNAME to subsequent references to his college bandmates.
  • "Chantal Switzerland" – be mindful of linking within a quotation or especially within a title, which can give undue emphasis or skew the intended meaning.
  • Be mindful of italics for album titles. There was one spot with 'Solola Bien which had an extra apostrophe and space.

I made some additional changes in this diff but I lost interest partway through so can't claim that it was thorough. – Reidgreg (talk) 16:56, 1 April 2020 (UTC)
