Ta for that

The Finks article is actually looking like an article rather than a parking lot for dubious claims and cite tags - cheers SatuSuro 02:16, 6 July 2011 (UTC)

You are welcome! I'm always suspicious of the gang/motorcycle club type articles, they are a coatrack for folks. tedder (talk) 00:04, 19 July 2011 (UTC)

Paralympic article alerts

Hi, thanks for getting new article alerts back up and running. Would you be able to check I've done the right thing at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Olympics/Paralympics#new_article_alerts. --John Vandenberg (chat) 07:52, 7 July 2011 (UTC)

Yeah, I have a concern:
/paralympics *= *$/
Add \s instead of spaces, it'll be a little more durable.
/paralympics\s*=\s*$/
I'll TB you if I don't hear back since it's been a long time. tedder (talk) 00:01, 19 July 2011 (UTC)

Nomination of Thermal_cycling for deletion

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Thermal_cycling is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Thermal_cycling until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on good quality evidence, and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion template from the top of the article. Mark48torpedo (talk) 03:43, 15 July 2011 (UTC)

Note to future confused self and stalkers- this only appeared here because I cleaned up incomplete AFD nominations. tedder (talk) 23:58, 18 July 2011 (UTC)

Michele Noonan

Let me go into more specifics. The arguments for keeping her article is that other non-winners have articles, but all the other non-winners who have articles have gone on to do notable things. For example, Chima Simone was a victim of the Bathtub Rapist. Michele has done nothing and did not win her season -- she doesn't meet notability criteria. Her claim to fame since then is creating a fitness supplement? It's called Cellean -- google it. Nobody has heard of it.

The article was written by her fans to promote her -- she is not notable. If you really look at the the credentials cited in her article, they are all obscure and tenuous references aside from Big Brother -- which she didn't win, and traditionally non-winners do not get articles. 67.246.30.214 (talk) 04:46, 15 July 2011 (UTC)

Someone nominated it on your behalf, it appears: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Michele Noonan. tedder (talk) 23:56, 18 July 2011 (UTC)

Schools

I don't understand why you are redirecting school articles without any notice. - Presidentman talk·contribs Random Picture of the Day (Talkback) 11:10, 18 July 2011 (UTC)

Generally, articles lacking in notability can be deleted through speedy/prod/AFD, or they can be redirected if there is a location that should discuss a non-notable entry. AFD is still a venue to discuss redirects, but it's unnecessary for obvious cases. No matter, I'll take the articles through AFD. tedder (talk) 18:07, 18 July 2011 (UTC)

Reverting CollegeFootballSearchResult?

I just noticed that you reverted all the Tedderbot updates of User:AlexNewArtBot/CollegeFootballSearchResult. It's been extremely helpful for you to take over for AlexNewArtBot, so why blow it all away? DeFaultRyan 18:53, 20 July 2011 (UTC)

oops- I meant to undo the most recent change, as tedderbot had some bad behavior- look on the diff and you'll see it. I'm modifying how it works to remove the templates used, but when it ran it was clear I had a problem. I'll revert to the proper version; the problem with leaving it is that the results would never get archived. TLDR- don't worry :-) tedder (talk) 19:27, 20 July 2011 (UTC)

TedderBot stopped?

Hello Tedder, We at Project Gastropods love TedderBot and rely on it for notification of new articles and finding new contributors to gastropod articles. Is the bot currently stopped? We have not had any new results for 7 days. Thanks, Invertzoo (talk) 12:33, 24 July 2011 (UTC)

Heh, I knew someone would notice. Yeah, I started adding features to the bot and broke it. I should have it running soon. tedder (talk) 14:12, 24 July 2011 (UTC)
Oh I am glad to hear that it will be back in action again soon. It is a tremendously useful bot! Many thanks for your hard work, Invertzoo (talk) 01:35, 25 July 2011 (UTC)
Any sort of ETA on this? I cringe thinking about how many articles there will be to catch up on. Brad (talk) 10:00, 28 July 2011 (UTC)
Certainly by the end of the weekend. tedder (talk) 11:17, 28 July 2011 (UTC)

Good news! Will the new listing include the articles from the "missing days"? If so that would be very helpful. Invertzoo (talk) 23:29, 29 July 2011 (UTC)

Yes, it includes the 'missing days'. For instance, if it last ran on the 20th, it'll start 'searching' from the 13th forward. tedder (talk) 23:31, 29 July 2011 (UTC)
OK, good! Invertzoo (talk) 00:48, 30 July 2011 (UTC)
Oh thank goodness it is back! Many thanks for your hard work! Invertzoo (talk) 20:56, 1 August 2011 (UTC)
De nada. With some improvements, and more on the way. tedder (talk) 21:04, 1 August 2011 (UTC)

I'd like to add that it's wonderful that the bot actually goes back over what it may have missed each week and that it also makes up for the time that it was not running. Alexbot never did that even after not running for days and weeks. Brad (talk) 03:04, 2 August 2011 (UTC)

Thanks. It's a design decision I chose. It makes some things more complicated, but.. dammit, I like it that way. tedder (talk) 03:08, 2 August 2011 (UTC)
That feature is really great for us in the Projects! Good decision on your part and much appreciated! Many thanks again! Invertzoo (talk) 01:03, 3 August 2011 (UTC)

I think I'm missing some context here. Someone can of course nominate you, not sure what that has to do with me. tedder (talk) 23:31, 29 July 2011 (UTC)

new article bot link problem

Hi, I noticed on User:AlexNewArtBot/ParalympicSearchResult that the "contribs" links are wrong. They link to "special:contributions/user:<username>", where "user:" is the problem. Cheers, John Vandenberg (chat) 12:06, 2 August 2011 (UTC)

Hey- yeah, Valfontis noticed that too. I have it fixed but can't change the bot while it is running. So the fix will happen in the next pass (in a few days). tedder (talk) 13:21, 2 August 2011 (UTC)

For talk post put in article by accident, please move it to talk page, not to oblivion

This was not very helpful, and no one even noticed until just now to restore it (to the talk page, where it belongs, of course). The noob even raised a valid article-improvement point. Of course it shouldn't be in the article prose itself, but just deleting it is kinda WP:BITEy, don't you think? :-/ — SMcCandlish Talk⇒ ʕ(Õلō Contribs. 02:03, 8 August 2011 (UTC)

I wouldn't say it's as bitey as you are indicating- feel free to move it to the talk page. tedder (talk) 03:40, 8 August 2011 (UTC)
(talk page stalker)I agree, not bitey at all, especially given the helpful message given to the user on their talk page. --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 03:51, 8 August 2011 (UTC)
Okay. Not trying to be hostile; just saying it doesn't make much sense to delete something like that instead of moving it to the talk page. It wasn't vandalism or a test edit, but an obvious attempt at posting a suggestion for article improvement. That's all. And, of course, I did move it to the talk page already. — SMcCandlish Talk⇒ ʕ(Õلō Contribs. 16:08, 8 August 2011 (UTC)
Aha. I see what you are getting at. Yeah, I can see that. I usually find those in bulk and that's an exceptional situation- in other words, most of them are people signing pages or other silliness. tedder (talk) 16:37, 8 August 2011 (UTC)
Okey-dokey. Didn't realize it was a batch action. — SMcCandlish Talk⇒ ʕ(Õلō Contribs. 00:39, 9 August 2011 (UTC)

Bot magic for other projects?

What TedderBot does at Wikipedia:WikiProject Oregon/Admin is very interesting. What does one do to sign up another project for this sort of treatment? — SMcCandlish Talk⇒ ʕ(Õلō Contribs. 02:15, 8 August 2011 (UTC)

Uh, right here I guess. There are ways it can be done without requiring bot assistance, but there are advantages to this style (I just can't remember what they are, honestly). Let me know what templates/categories pick up the entire project and I'll see about coding it (in our case, it's simply Template:WikiProject Oregon plus Category:WikiProject Oregon). Bonus, there's no need for BRFA because it only edits one page outside of articlespace. tedder (talk) 03:40, 8 August 2011 (UTC)
Template:WikiProject Cue sports and Template:WikiProject Snooker should both do the trick, since they're generated by the standardized project banner meta-template. Because of the overlap between the projects, the relevant categories are Category:All cue sports pages minus snooker and Category:All snooker pages, respectively. Anyway, it's an awesome idea. I find it increasingly difficult to do meaningful maintenance and anti-vandal work for either project because my personal watchlist is many thousands of items from many, many topics. It's therefore very hard for me to see any kind of patterns, like a noob showing up and making sneaky edits over a few weeks to all Scottish snooker player bios, and things like that. Such a pattern would stick out like a sore thumb with your tool. — SMcCandlish Talk⇒ ʕ(Õلō Contribs. 16:20, 8 August 2011 (UTC)
Check this out: Wikipedia:WikiProject Cue sports/Admin. I need to work on the header, but.. does the list of articles look complete? tedder (talk) 16:36, 8 August 2011 (UTC)
Thanks, that was quick. It's showing everything; I can't find anything missing. Oh, actually it looks like it is drawing from Category:All cue sports pages including snooker instead of Category:All cue sports pages minus snooker, since all the snooker stuff seems to be included. So, are these things auto-generated by some kind of script? Just wondering what the maintenance process is. — SMcCandlish Talk⇒ ʕ(Õلō Contribs. 00:48, 9 August 2011 (UTC)
Wait, so are you asking for coverage on two projects? I concatenated the four items together (templates, categories). Should I be generating a list for Cue sports and another one for Snooker? As far as maintenance, once I get it done it'll run daily from my server. The code will be on Github with a good license so someone else can take it if something happens to me. tedder (talk) 01:36, 9 August 2011 (UTC)
Yes, they are two separate projects. Sorry I wasn't clearer! Despite technical and historical overlap, there's near-zero social overlap and very little WP editorial overlap (cf. baseball and cricket, or field hockey and ice hockey). I may actually be the only editor participating actively across both projects. — SMcCandlish Talk⇒ ʕ(Õلō Contribs. 06:07, 9 August 2011 (UTC)
Okay. When I have a spare hour I'll split them apart and send you a draft. It'll be in the next handful of days, but my personal life is crazy-busy. tedder (talk) 23:26, 10 August 2011 (UTC)
Fully understood, and much appreciated. :-) — SMcCandlish Talk⇒ ʕ(Õلō Contribs. 05:55, 11 August 2011 (UTC)

I think they are done now. Looks like you created one of the nav templates, can you create the other one and publish/announce them? For posterity, the source code is here and has a suitable license for reuse. tedder (talk) 03:59, 13 August 2011 (UTC)

Huzzah! Where does one publish/announce the nav templates? — SMcCandlish Talk⇒ ʕ(Õلō Contribs. 06:39, 13 August 2011 (UTC)
I mean publish/announce the /admin pages to the projects. tedder (talk) 15:29, 13 August 2011 (UTC)
Done! You might want to check out Wikipedia:WikiProject Cue sports/Nav for some ideas. I've integrated other stuff into it, especially a massively overhauled {{Topic}}. — SMcCandlish Talk⇒ ʕ(Õلō Contribs. 20:38, 15 August 2011 (UTC)

Valfontis wants to know if TedderBot can assist with Wikipedia:WikiProject Oregon/Redlinks list. That sounds pretty cool to me. Maybe it could detect Oregon-related articles that are yet to be created and list them at the page? Is it possible? Jsayre64 (talk) 23:04, 10 August 2011 (UTC)

Yep. You know I want to know. What I was hoping, if you recall, is that you could get the bot to filter out the results from the templates, because Aboutmovies had to remove those by hand, which I believe was a PITA. And maybe up the the target number of redlinks from >2 to >3, as 3 seems like a pretty small threshhold to me. Other folks may disagree, and it may also depend on how long the list would be with 3 vs. 4 being the cutoff. If that makes any sense at all. Valfontis (talk) 23:21, 10 August 2011 (UTC)
Yep. It's doable, we could always sort by "most links" and let the user decide how many pages to follow. I'm probably 45-60 days away from starting this, though. Would y'all rather see a redlinklist or a memberbot? I work as a democracy except I have ultimate say. tedder (talk) 23:24, 10 August 2011 (UTC)
What's the difference? Valfontis (talk) 17:28, 16 August 2011 (UTC)
Those are two bots I want to write, but I'm limited on time. So I'm curious which you'd rather see first. tedder (talk) 17:43, 16 August 2011 (UTC)
Oh, gotcha. I though those were two aspects of the redlink thing, not two separate projects. I'm more interested in the redlink bot--I think it will generate more goodwill than the "you've been voted off the island" project. Valfontis (talk) 18:44, 16 August 2011 (UTC)
I'd also like to see the redlinkbot. --Esprqii (talk) 19:00, 16 August 2011 (UTC)

deletion page refactoring

I don't like inline comments either, but I did one in this case because I thought the alternative was worse. I put the inlined note where I did because it applies specifically to the previous paragraph only, not to the whole posting. Putting the note after the whole posting broke the connection between the note and what it referred to. To clarify that connection, I found I had to belabor what I was trying to say much more than it was worth. I made the choice that I thought would be least problematic. I should also have replicated the signature, one of the techniques suggested in WP:Talk. Others might disagree with my choice, as I disagree with many other choices that writers made on the page. However, that is not the problem. The problem is that no one should be able to make changes on a locked archive merely to express an editorial opinion about which reasonable people might differ. Administration grants power to apply the rules, not power to ignore the rules. If locking is not universally respected, it is really just a serving suggestion, and no debate will never have to end. AlexNewArtBot isn't delivering the right "goods"

In recent weeks, when I peruse the output at AlexNewArtBot/GoodSearchResult to look for possibly DYK nominations, I am not finding the quality content I used to be able to expect. Far too many of the hits are minimal stubs like Sunnyside United Methodist Church (OK, that's an extreme case; Emirates Aluminium is more typical, and I did find the nominatable article Norbert Frýd). Not only are the results filled with articles that could not remotely be called "good", but my own high-quality work (if I do say so myself), such as the recent Potsdam Sandstone, doesn't show up in the list. I don't know when the search criteria changed, nor what aspects changed, but the results lead me to think the criteria need to be reexamined and tweaked. --Orlady (talk) 05:05, 3 August 2011 (UTC)

This search (rules at User:AlexNewArtBot/Good) has traditionally been used for DYK candidates, but most of the articles in the recent "GoodSearchResults" output are ineligible for DYK. I have a hunch that I've figured out one of the problems. For some reason, it seems that the article length parameter is not being used in scoring. Thus, an article with a size of 2000 can reach this list if it has a References section, a Notes section, an EL section, a Gallery, an image, and categories, and uses the {{cite}} template, even though it may have almost no actual prose text, but longer articles that aren't fully burdened with all of those diverse elements (such as my Potsdam Sandstone example) don't make the list because they aren't getting scored the 40, 60 or 75 total points they are supposed to get for lengths over 5000, 7500 or 10000. Do you think you can figure out what's going on -- and restore the length element to the scores? --Orlady (talk) 20:57, 8 August 2011 (UTC)
Aha. $SIZE isn't implemented. I can do that. What's $USER? I see it being used in one place. tedder (talk) 21:14, 8 August 2011 (UTC)
I don't know what $USER is. Could it be something about "recently moved from user space"? --Orlady (talk) 12:11, 9 August 2011 (UTC)
It would be very nice if you could re-implement $SIZE. I think that the lack of a good list of possible DYK candidates is one contributor to the current turmoil at DYK. A better list of "Good" results could help there. --Orlady (talk) 11:44, 11 August 2011 (UTC)
Generic comment to keep this section open. I'll implement $SIZE when I can. tedder (talk) 20:08, 16 August 2011 (UTC)

This is done. Look at the result log; were the sizes additive before? This is certainly the easiest way to implement it. If it's only supposed to match one $SIZE rule, life will get more difficult. tedder (talk) 02:46, 12 September 2011 (UTC)

I'm not an expert on how the bot worked previously. However, I think the structure of the rules makes sense only if the scores for sizes are additive. Accordingly, it looks like the new bot is behaving correctly. :-) --Orlady (talk) 04:48, 12 September 2011 (UTC)

TedderBot has stopped archiving?

Hello, unless I'm mistaken, TedderBot stopped archiving new article results from late July. Instead older results are just deleted from the respective "logs". Is there a specific reason for this change? I'd like to point to User:TedderBot/NewPageSearch/Sweden/archive, which was last updated on 19 July, and the new results added to User:AlexNewArtBot/SwedenSearchResult from 29 July do not include any "x pages archived" edit summary. Bot still working?

I was just wondering if TedderBot is still operating normally? The Gastropods project has not had any results since 19th September. Invertzoo (talk) 14:08, 24 September 2011 (UTC)

Still working, but not processing results as fast as normal- the server I have it on has a bad fan, so it's running slowly. tedder (talk) 16:04, 24 September 2011 (UTC)
I assume this is why the results for User:AlexNewArtBot/PolandSearchResult are not updated? Cannot it be moved to the toolserver? Such a useful bot seems like a project the WMF should support. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk to me 01:20, 4 October 2011 (UTC)
It's running now, saving results in entries that start with 'M', so you should get Poland results within a day or so. I have to make a technical change before it can be scheduled, and then it can be moved to the toolserver. tedder (talk) 02:32, 4 October 2011 (UTC)
Thank you so much for all your work, the results are invaluable to us in the gastropod project. However, the last listing we have is from 25th September. Hope to see some more soon. Good luck! Invertzoo (talk) 19:26, 4 October 2011 (UTC)

Hello, User:AlexNewArtBot/CinemaSearchResult was last updated on September 27. I am wondering if it would be possible to get new results? Let me know if I need to do anything on my end. Erik (talk | contribs) 12:22, 7 October 2011 (UTC)

This bot started on 'E', so 'C' is almost at the end of the chain it needs to process. tedder (talk) 14:13, 7 October 2011 (UTC)

Follow up

On the User_talk:Tedder/Archive_10#Request_for_2_new_article_reports. I created a feed for sociology, but regular expressions are beyond me. Could you help me set up a simple feed per the rules mentioned in the old post in User:AlexNewArtBot/Sociology? I looked at some examples, but while I can understand the generic idea behind them, even simpler ones like User:AlexNewArtBot/Poland have too many elements I don't understand. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk to me 22:47, 5 October 2011 (UTC)

Done. I merged the three words into one search. The \W means "word boundary", so it wouldn't match "resociological" but would match "socialogicaling". Sorry, I had to make up words to explain it . It looks like you added the search to User:AlexNewArtBot, but not to User:AlexNewArtBot/Master. Make sure to do so. tedder (talk) 22:53, 5 October 2011 (UTC)
I see, thanks. So you are saying it will match anything "sociolog*"? I forgot from where, but this is is the syntax I am more used to :) Done ([2]). I guess the => is not needed unless the page is not default? --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk to me 05:26, 6 October 2011 (UTC)
Yeah, that's what it'll match. I guess that was an easier way to say it. And yeah, the => is not needed. Cheers, tedder (talk) 14:52, 6 October 2011 (UTC)

MYMOSA

A motorcycle-related article MYMOSA just got speedy deleted despite there being an open AfD discussion. I just pinged the deleting admin, RHaworth, but as an admin with an interest in motorcycle stuff perhaps you could add some weight to the request to get the article reinstated so that I can carry on with my referencing work and we can have a proper deletion discussion. --Biker Biker (talk) 15:47, 6 October 2011 (UTC)

Looks like they userfied it, which is the appropriate response in this. I'll watch it in your userspace now. tedder (talk) 16:08, 6 October 2011 (UTC)

TedderBot vs. WikiSym

On Oct 3, User:Phauly placed the {{curent}} tag in the WikiSym article which contains information about the current 2011 WikiSym conference Oct 3-5.

I'm confused because, on Oct 4, during the event, TedderBot removed the tag.

Is there something I can do? Can you help me understand? TIA — John Harvey, Wizened Web Wizard Wannabe, Talk to me! 13:07, 7 October 2011 (UTC)

TedderBot removes the tag after 12 hours of inactivity. It's designed for pages with large amounts of editing; see WP:CET. tedder (talk) 13:20, 7 October 2011 (UTC)

Block of LukeM212 (talk · contribs)

Hi Tedder. You blocked this user in August after he was warned for copyvios about thirty five times and continued to upload them anyway. He requested unblock, which I declined, but after further discussion I think he may finally get it. He also has uploaded a few images over at Commons while blocked here. I checked a few of them and they look ok. I'm leaning towards unblocking, consulting with you first as blocking admin. Beeblebrox (talk) 21:26, 8 October 2011 (UTC)

I'm fine with it- are you going to keep tabs on their contribs after unblocking? I just want to make sure someone keeps an eye on them for a while. tedder (talk) 22:26, 9 October 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for your reply. I'll keep an eye out, and I've clearly warned him that a single copyvio in the future will lead him straight back to being blocked. Beeblebrox (talk) 23:19, 9 October 2011 (UTC)

Score

Hi, New article announcements are great. But I'd like to know what the score refers to. Thanks Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 15:08, 10 October 2011 (UTC)

Hi- the scores are set up in the searches. For instance, here are the searches for Oregon. There are numbers associated with each word. If you look at the Oregon search log, you can see what points were given to each article. If you link to the search you are looking at, I can give you specifics. tedder (talk) 15:38, 10 October 2011 (UTC)

NewArtBot

Hi Tedder, hope you had a good break! I created a new Architecture article Percy Thomas Partnership using an existing REDIRECT page. Will your(?) New Article Bot pick this up as a new article? I've absolutely no idea how to add it manually to the Bot's list. Sionk (talk) 20:02, 16 October 2011 (UTC)

Hi Sionk- it only picks up pages that are newly created, so no, it won't. That's an interesting idea, though. tedder (talk) 19:30, 2 November 2011 (UTC)

Autoindustrie

Do me a favour and check out the WP:POINT edits made by User:Autoindustrie on some of the bike articles. A second opinion would be useful. The bottom line is that I deleted his clear COI promotion of his own work as references and now he is going through some of my contributions (motorcycle articles) remove references from reliable sources such as Motorcycle News. --Biker Biker (talk) 08:00, 19 October 2011 (UTC)

NewArt and NewPages

Hi Tedder,

I've got an idea that I'd like to see happen, but I don't know if it's possible, much less how to do it. I'd like to take the results at User:AlexNewArtBot/MedicineSearchResult, and sort of 'merge' them with the results at Special:NewPages. The point of the exercise is to get the "Mark this page as patrolled" link when we visit the page, but to not get the whole list of every single new page created—just the ones that WP:MED might be interested in.

Do you think that's feasible? Is it something your bot could do? WhatamIdoing (talk) 16:14, 1 November 2011 (UTC)

Hi- you can think of AlexNewArtBot as a derivative of Special:NewPages. Hmm. I might be able to do it automatically by adding "&redirect=no&rcid=1" to the page URL, but it would then prompt "mark as patrolled" even on patrolled pages. Any ideas? It might be better with a javascript tool that detects if the page has been patrolled or not. tedder (talk) 19:30, 2 November 2011 (UTC)
I'm not technically competent, so my opinion would be worthless. I'll see if I can find someone who knows about these things. WhatamIdoing (talk) 18:02, 5 November 2011 (UTC)

Hi Tedder, I've appreciated your advice in the past, so chose this way to suggest a new Art item I find fascinating, but I couldn't find another way to contact you then I read your page, particularly the negative comments that I thought very unkind, I for one appreciated your help.

Anyhow today a friend sent me this link http://cliptank.com/PeopleofInfluencePainting.htm The page talks about Wikipedia though I can't fathom their meaning, so I looked on Wiki and found no page on this most strange Unique painting the skill is incredible, the perspective projection almost 3D so just suggest you look at that site reference and decide if it should be included or referenced in Wikipedia I personally havent the skill of knowledge to make a page for it. Simply it fascinated me the history in one painting and think it deserves a listing and discussion for bonafides etc. Regards Rob--Robbygay (talk) 01:08, 24 November 2011 (UTC)

Fred replied at Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)#Detecting_whether_a_page_has_been_marked_as_patrolled. It sounds plausible to me... except that just about anything would sound plausible to me, so that's not a good measure. Does that sound like a reasonable approach to you? WhatamIdoing (talk) 17:08, 6 November 2011 (UTC)
Fred's put the Javascript code on my user talk page at User talk:WhatamIdoing#Patrolled_or_not_patrolled._That_is_the_question. It appears to work, except that in the current list, nothing apparently needs to be patrolled, and when I manually double-checked the list at Special:NewPages, the first article is still unpatrolled. But I think this constitutes some progress, and perhaps Fred will know what is causing the discrepancy. WhatamIdoing (talk) 15:38, 8 November 2011 (UTC)

Hiya! To save a bit of space I thought to add my message here since it's directly related.

I've reached a point where the script is functionally not going to improve (I doubt (unless in response to feedback)) but will still technically improve (I hope (I'm working on it)). I'd like your feedback Tedder if you have any. Also: since it was written to work only with your results pages, could you do me a personal favour? I will understand if you are too busy to be bothered with such trifling concerns but; If you later change the layout of the results, could you please drop me a note so I can update the script to match? I'm watching here but am not a stalker  fg 13:45, 12 November 2011 (UTC)

Hey. I'll give you feedback if you want, but I'm not the NPP type. I'll let you know if I update the result format, though. It shouldn't change drastically; want to share the regex or pattern you are using to parse it? tedder (talk) 01:24, 24 November 2011 (UTC)

New architecture pages

Hi Tedder, there is a discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Architecture#New articles about how to make the list generated by User:AlexNewArtBot/ArchitectureSearchResult more useful. Would it be possible for instance to strengthen the formula to exclude some of the completely irrelevant stuff, and could new pages tagged as part of WikiProject Architecture be prioritised? Please respond at the WikiProject talk page. Thanks. --Elekhh (talk) 22:45, 8 November 2011 (UTC)

Is another bot run in the near future? Brad (talk) 00:44, 9 November 2011 (UTC)
It was running this morning, it might have died (it doesn't recover when Wikipedia has an API hiccup, because it tries to be nice). I'll start a run soon. Getting it more stable (so it starts and restarts automatically) is on my short list. tedder (talk) 00:54, 9 November 2011 (UTC)
Hi Tedder, there is a bizarre thing happening, I updated the rules also increasing the threshold to 30pt, yet the bot still listed the article Science and invention in Manchester with 29pt. Wonder why? Also there is a technical question at WikiProject Architecture. --Elekhh (talk) 19:54, 10 November 2011 (UTC)
On the result page, note there is a link called "ruleset version". It shows what version the bot loaded when running. In this case, it was on the previous version. The next run will have the new version. (it loads the rules, then processes all searches, which can take days). I'll go over to WPA. tedder (talk) 19:57, 10 November 2011 (UTC)
I see, thanks! --Elekhh (talk) 14:59, 11 November 2011 (UTC)
Another question. Will the formula "/architecture\s*=/" not exclude all occurrences of "architect" given that sooner or later any mention of "architect" is followed by a ==section title== ? --Elekhh (talk) 13:30, 12 November 2011 (UTC)
The \s* means "match spaces, if there are any there". So it'll match "architecture=" or "architecture =". It won't match "architect=" because it doesn't have the "ure". tedder (talk) 01:23, 24 November 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for the backup. I'm keeping an eye on it and would appreciate any admin backup I can get. Regards, --Manway 05:08, 13 November 2011 (UTC)

No problem. Sort of an odd series of events for that article lately. My personal feelings about the article may differ, but BLP is not to be taken lightly. tedder (talk) 05:11, 13 November 2011 (UTC)

Wikipedia is not a book marketing device

ISBN codes are merely UPC codes for books. They are a selling tool for publishers. Search engines such as WorldCat (or commercial search engines) work off of Author, Title, Publisher, Date, or subject keywords. Wikipedia should not be attempting to be an inferior substitute for WorldCat by using the grossly inferior search metric of ISBN codes.

Why are ISBN codes inferior: 1. Not every book has them, thus skewing searchability to current work away from older work. 2. Every edition of a book has a unique code: hardcover and softcover differ, if it moves to a new publisher, that differs, if a publisher puts out a new edition, that's different. 3. Use of ISBN-UPC numbers clutters Footnotes sections with useless links, making it more difficult to read what needs to be read — the name of the source, publisher detail, and page number.

I hope this clarifies my actions. Carrite (talk) 17:50, 24 November 2011 (UTC)

First, please centralize discussions- in other words, reply where the discussion started. Second, an ISBN may be inferiour, but it's better than the even-more-inferior title of a book. This is a larger conversation than just us- if you think ISBNs shouldn't exist on Wikipedia, you need to discuss it at the proper village pump. There's a strong consensus for using them to increase the verifiability of citations. tedder (talk) 17:53, 24 November 2011 (UTC)

Re: Any relation?

Nope, that was not my account. It was account set up to "out" me and by placing it on my talk page like you did everyone who has my talkpage watchlisted now too knows my name...joy...more real life harassment. I know your intentions were good, but maybe next time an email would be more appropriate. Thanks, Tiptoety talk 01:44, 29 November 2011 (UTC)

Oh, damn, would have emailed, didn't know it was harassment. But you can't expect me to know the insides of your drama either. tedder (talk) 02:16, 29 November 2011 (UTC)
I know, hence my "I know your intentions were good" statement. I guess for me, seeing a usermane along with what appears to be a real name is always (and has always) been a red flag for me that outing is taking place. Anywho, no bad feelings or anything. Cheers, Tiptoety talk 02:21, 29 November 2011 (UTC)

Chet Orloff

Ugh. I protected the article for 3 days. I'm not 100% certain that those various editors are sock puppets--they may actually just all be people working for or associated with Orloff. Or, I also wonder if it's not actually Orlofff as claimed, but instead Tramposch and associates, since I see that User:Shednight also tried to remove the info from Oregon Historical Society. While meatpuppetry is equally as bad as sockpuppetry, it's harder to prove with such a limited amount of data. I've put both articles on my watchlist, and will wait and see what happens over the next few days, especially once the protection lifts. In the meantime, though, I am actually concerned that, on the Orloff page at least, that maybe the info shouldn't actually be in the article. I've started a discussion on the talk page, and would like your input. Qwyrxian (talk) 05:58, 29 November 2011 (UTC)

I'll join in. A little short on time, but I'll be there soon- and the folks from WPORE will be too- we started discussing it at WT:WPORE. tedder (talk) 06:06, 29 November 2011 (UTC)

Red Plague?

Wondering about the use of this term in bot search records. Looking for communist propaganda? Cheers, W. B. Wilson (talk) 18:14, 2 December 2011 (UTC)

Can you give me some context? tedder (talk) 18:15, 2 December 2011 (UTC)
As in, "User:TedderBot/NewPageSearch/RedPlague/errors ‎ (links)" on Special:WhatLinksHere/Territorial_Defense_Forces_(Poland), User:TedderBot/NewPageSearch/RedPlague/errors seems to list many mentions of Trotsky, Soviet, socialists, communist, etc. Cheers, W. B. Wilson (talk) 19:19, 2 December 2011 (UTC)
Aha. Looks like Colchicum (talk · contribs) set it up in 2009, like many of the searches I'm not sure if many of the searches by TedderBot (nee AlexNewArtBot) are used or if they are simply a way to keep my CPUs warm. tedder (talk) 19:23, 2 December 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply. It could be useful; I am wary of how various POVs, especially nationalist/political ones, get introduced in Wikipedia articles -- sometimes slyly. Cheers, W. B. Wilson (talk) 19:29, 2 December 2011 (UTC)

No archiving?

Looking at User:AlexNewArtBot/SociologySearchResult, both archive links are dead, and looking at some older articles' what links tos, I would say that the bot is not archiving the results it removes. Is this a bug or intended? --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk to me 19:27, 2 December 2011 (UTC)

It's a bug, though I may make it so archiving is off by default and it needs to be turned on. If I do that, I'll add a comment to the top of the SearchResult pages for a little while. tedder (talk) 19:29, 2 December 2011 (UTC)
I find archives somewhat useful, particularly when we want to work on the backlog (I am not working on SOCIO backlog, and it would be nicer to look at one page rather than at history). --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk to me 23:16, 2 December 2011 (UTC)

Missed ship articles.

Just found a few articles that somehow slipped past the bot. Maybe you can figure out why. Brad (talk) 01:07, 5 December 2011 (UTC)

I need to write some code that allows a given ruleset to be checked against a given page. It's been on my todo list for a while, unfortunately. tedder (talk) 18:46, 10 December 2011 (UTC)

Oxy Revisions

I see that you have placed a hold on new changes. I am pleased that you have put a stop to relentless deletions of my contributions to the Occidental Petroleum article. I would be willing to make minor changes if those who have automatically wiped out my well-sourced, factual contributions would not use the consensus game of getting one or two allies to pretend there is massive resistance to the article. That is clearly not the case. I am an authority on this subject and have read thousands of pages of material for many years. Cheers. Cowboy128 (talk) 07:03, 10 December 2011 (UTC)

It doesn't matter if you are a personal authority on the subject, what matters is verifiable and reliable sources presented from a neutral point of view. Please see Wikipedia's dispute resolution page to learn how you might proceed- certainly you two need to discuss the content, not the contributors, and keep it on the article talk page, not here. tedder (talk) 18:46, 10 December 2011 (UTC)

History Alive! The Medieval World and Beyond

I noticed that you deleted History Alive! The Medieval World and Beyond by prod. The version that you prodded was a hi-jacked article with all of the references removed and there is more available. I'm just letting you know that what you prodded was hi-jacked just in case you wonder why the article is back up, not to be condescending. SL93 (talk) 15:59, 10 December 2011 (UTC)

No problem, thanks for letting me know. There's some weasel words and other content keeping it from being entirely encyclopedic, but it's somewhat okay. tedder (talk) 18:46, 10 December 2011 (UTC)
I will take a look at it and see what can be fixed. SL93 (talk) 19:41, 10 December 2011 (UTC)

Occidental Petroleum

Hi, Tedder, please look at my edit request at Talk:Occidental Petroleum, my comment in the section above after Anomie declined the request, and the brief discussion on Anomie's Talk page here. I think there's a clear consensus for restoring the article to just before Cowboy's last reversion (or to some earlier point, but it amounts to the same thing) and I believe there are BLP implications against leaving it in its current state, but if you disagree, I'll continue the discussion. Thanks.--Bbb23 (talk) 18:51, 10 December 2011 (UTC)

I saw it, just replied with WP:WRONG. I'm not seeing egregious BLP violations. Please read WP:DR, and taking this to a handful of user talk pages is not helping your case. tedder (talk) 18:52, 10 December 2011 (UTC)
I didn't see your comment until after I posted this here. I think the part about taking this to a handful of user talk pages is a bit harsh. I took it to Anomie only because I didn't understand the image, not to object to the decision. And Anomie was the one who suggested I follow up with you.--Bbb23 (talk) 18:56, 10 December 2011 (UTC)
Yeah, it was a bit harsh, you're right. Given this should probably spill over to BLPN or POVN, I'm hoping it doesn't end up on many other pages first. tedder (talk) 19:03, 10 December 2011 (UTC)

I asked for specific feedback and only got directions to read Wiki guidelines. This would scarcely explain the total purging of any facts they deem to be negative about Occidental. I have expressed my willingness to cooperatively rework the history page but get nothing in response. Please lock the article until there is true consensus.Cowboy128 (talk) 08:04, 21 December 2011 (UTC)

Locking isn't appropriate now, there has been discussion. Again, use the avenues given at WP:DR. tedder (talk) 12:25, 21 December 2011 (UTC)

Jill Zarin

Yes, I see your point - I was looking at the structure of the article, not focused on the words - having read the affected section now I agree with you that it was a PR piece, and I've gone back to earlier text and added a few details. I think it's in balance now. Thanks for pointing out the problem. Tvoz/talk 19:05, 20 December 2011 (UTC)

Thanks. I totally agree, it needs to be there (at least to match the article), but obviously a PR type came and pasted some blatant NPOV in there. Your diff is much better, there might be some tweaking on the content, but it's substantially better. tedder (talk) 19:24, 20 December 2011 (UTC)

Wikipedia doesn't work on original research; you need to provide reliable sources indicating this. tedder (talk) 15:42, 28 December 2011 (UTC)

GeoHack

Hey Tedder, can you describe to me, since I'm not familiar with GeoHack, the quality and reputability of GeoHack? The name alone seems to suggest something of low quality. A poor choice in branding imo, but maybe I'm missing something. Leitmotiv (talk) 16:23, 29 December 2011 (UTC)

In what way? As I understand, it's a way to take coordinates and link to all of the various mapping services. It's weird to have it as a toolserver app instead of a core Wikipedia/Wikimedia service. That's all I know about it, though. tedder (talk) 16:48, 29 December 2011 (UTC)
GeoHack is a user edited database right? Isn't that a tertiary source and not suitable for Wikipedia? Leitmotiv (talk) 00:32, 31 December 2011 (UTC)
Can you give me an example of what you are looking at? AFAIK, it isn't a database, it's a conversion of coordinates to links for various mapping services. tedder (talk) 00:35, 31 December 2011 (UTC)
Well, it also seems to be citing Wikipedia, which is an interesting little conundrum and perhaps COI? In part at least, it appears to be a tertiary source. One, that cites Wikipedia, which cites GeoHack, which cites Wikipedia... and so on? Leitmotiv (talk) 00:40, 31 December 2011 (UTC)
One other thing, if the links GeoHack utilizes show locations, but none of those links specifically have a map detailing "Skeleton Cave," wouldn't that cast doubt upon its verifiability? Leitmotiv (talk) 00:43, 31 December 2011 (UTC)
this is what you are talking about? Look at the raw (wiki) source. I included a ref but it is commented out since the location is (currently) below the reflist. I also referred to that in my edit summary. tedder (talk) 00:46, 31 December 2011 (UTC)
Yeah Skeleton Cave and your GeoHack edit. I'm interested more in the GeoHack as a reliable source, since really it's nothing more than a link to other sources. It doesn't appear to be an authority on anything, just hearsay. But I'm only basing that on my limited experience with it so far. I see that a lot of its sources are quite good, and I would think it's probably a better choice to use those instead. Leitmotiv (talk) 22:07, 31 December 2011 (UTC)
Geohack isn't the source- it's the display method. The reference is in the raw wiki. tedder (talk) 22:10, 31 December 2011 (UTC)
Okay got it, thanks. I'll have to swing by REI to check out the reference, unless you know of an online version... Leitmotiv (talk) 02:03, 1 January 2012 (UTC)
I found it as a preview, either GBooks or Amazon SITB. tedder (talk) 02:34, 1 January 2012 (UTC)
Okay I did SITB. GBooks doesn't appear to allow more than three select pages (none of which are 93). The Amazon one however does not show page 93 either. Did you reference this from a hardcopy you own or reviewed? Leitmotiv (talk) 02:52, 1 January 2012 (UTC)
I did SITB, and it came from that page. It probably depends on the search terms you used; with "skeleton cave gps" it shows me that page. You'll probably have to open a different browser to do it, SITB remembers which pages you've seen. tedder (talk) 03:47, 1 January 2012 (UTC)
Okay that seemed to work and I found the coordinates. Thanks for helping. Leitmotiv (talk) 03:54, 1 January 2012 (UTC)

Based on its current state, it's pretty clear that 2011–12 Los Angeles arson attacks needs some serious work. Best wishes for 2012

Hi Tedder - best wishes for 2012! Of the 100 or so primary schools that were suddenly mass proposed for deletion over the holiday period, roughly half are being redirected and half are being deleted, and some are apparently being deleted without properly evaluating the consensus. Not only is it contrary to any effort to adhere to consistency in the way policies, guidelines, or precedents are applied throughout the encyclopedia, but such arbitrary voting and closing by those who are not aware of the policies, guidelines, and precedents, does not accord equal debate to all schools that are proposed for deletion at AfD. The situation is now getting ridiculous and a ruling is urgently required one way or another that we can all follow and save unnecessary bureaucracy. --Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 05:34, 3 January 2012 (UTC)

Hi. Pray tell, is there any chance that your bot could be adjusted for et.wikipedia.org? I mostly contribute content, so I don't know much about technical specifications and possible differences between :en and :et versions of Mediawiki, but it seems to be a very useful beast. --Oop (talk) 13:58, 3 January 2012 (UTC)

San Francisco meetup at WMF headquarters

Hi Tedder,

I just wanted to give you a heads-up about the next wiki-meetup happening in SF. It'll be located at our very own Wikimedia Foundation offices, and we'd love it if some local editors who are new to the meetup scene came and got some free lunch with us :) Please sign up on the meetup page if you're interested in attending, and I hope to see you soon! Where to go

Hi Tedder. This AfD situation is getting worse. Something needs to be done urgently, but I don't particularly wish for my talk page to become the venue for the inevitable dramafest. I know you're busy in RL right now, but some advice is needed where to take it. Please see this thread and this thread. Thanks. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 04:45, 10 January 2012 (UTC)

Hi. When you recently edited Helms Bakery, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Nash (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Upcoming RFC/U

Tedder, I want to notify you of an ongoing discussion pertaining to User:Born2cycle. A sandbox in preparation for an RFC/U regarding alleged tendentious editing by B2C is being prepared here at User:Greg L/sandbox.

I am contacting you because of your expertise in this issue, as exhibited by your taking the lead in filing this RfC: Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Born2cycle. I also hope that by broadening the participation there with you, an admin, you can help to improve the quality of the discussion and to more fully achieve consensus.

I am taking the initiative on this because, though I have had very limited (and only very recently too) interaction with B2C, I only recently discovered that he had driven another admin to quit Wikipedia out of frustration with Wikipedia’s poor processes for dealing with tendentious editors (see User talk:GTBacchus#So sick of this bullshit). As I wrote at this ANI brought by GTBacchus just before he quit the project, One thing GTBaccus was exceedingly correct about is that Wikipedia is utterly broken in its ability to deal with tendentious editors. It’s my intention to use the sandbox and the processes used in the upcoming RFC/U to serve as a paradigm for how we go about dealing with editors like B2C so Wikipedia no longer stays broken in this regard.

As an admin, I would greatly value your participation in helping to craft what I hope will be that paradigm. Greg L (talk) 22:10, 21 January 2012 (UTC)

Joseph Smith (again)

Hi Tedder. User John Foxe is once again hammering out the POV-in-sheep's-clothing over at the Joseph Smith, Jr. page - this time against perhaps the most important new NPOV editor we've encountered over there, user Adjwilley. Could you have a look at the interesting discussion re: the topic the First Vision? By the way: I'm neither a Mormon or anti-Mormon and have been working on that article for around five years. This new editor is worthy of supporting, and I've done what I can. Many thanks. A Sniper (talk) 03:59, 3 February 2012 (UTC)

Richard Sanders/Portland State Univ

The article on Sanders states, not very plainly or straightforwardly, but states that Sanders attended Portland State. Lots of the other entries in the same heading @ PSU don't have citations. Why is Sanders subject to such scrutiny? The article on Sanders does need citations. If you want to tag it, please do. That Sanders attended Portland State is common knowledge. I do have specialized knowledge on this subject. Regards. Tapered (talk) 04:08, 7 February 2012 (UTC)

Is there a cite on the Sanders page? I'm not removing it, just asking for a cite. Generally I try to watch for new entries and ensure they are cited, and backfill entries as I can. WP:BURDEN and the 5 pillars are very clear on this- if challenged, material must be cited. Please don't remove the "citation needed" tag. I'll see if I can find a reference too. tedder (talk) 04:17, 7 February 2012 (UTC)
I found a source and added it. Note his page deperately needs cleanup; I've begun on that. tedder (talk) 04:31, 7 February 2012 (UTC)
If the article on Sanders documents PSU, does the listing @ PSU need a citation? Tapered (talk) 04:49, 7 February 2012 (UTC)
Because it didn't clearly cite PSU, and because references on Wikipedia aren't circular- they cannot cite Wikipedia. You'll note I copied the citation from Sanders to PSU. tedder (talk) 05:28, 7 February 2012 (UTC)

Request you not join Joseph Smith Jr.

Hi Tedder,

The last we talked you called me a troll for voicing serious frustration with the bias at Joseph Smith Jr.. As a result I have made virtually no further comments there since (one recently only to thank the new NPOV contributor for his fair contributions). I don't agree with half of what he does, but at least I can agree with the other half. See, contrary to your judgement of me I was never pushing an agenda. I don't want to get involved in that old disagreement, I merely wanted to ask you not to involve yourself at the article. I may be wrong, but I did not see you as fully removed from the POV enough to be the best person for the job.

Regretfully, but courteously,

--Canadiandy talk 06:18, 7 February 2012 (UTC)

I'm confused what you are asking of me. tedder (talk) 14:22, 7 February 2012 (UTC)
With respect to A Sniper who has asked you to get involved at JS Jr, I am asking that you not.--Canadiandy talk 20:20, 7 February 2012 (UTC)
Aha. It's weird to bring up something old and then say "yeah, not that". I'm keeping an eye on the Smith page for now, if you look at the talk history you'll see a recent action. Generally I'm just wearing my admin hat, watching for edit warring, civility, and similar issues. tedder (talk) 20:29, 7 February 2012 (UTC)
Pity. I'll express my vote of non-confidence and graciously step away. I don't doubt you are an effective admin on most topics, just my experience you are not the best fit for what is needed at Joseph Smith.--Canadiandy talk 01:02, 8 February 2012 (UTC)
Our point of views differ. Your issues with other points of view is noted. It would mean more coming from an active editor, not someone who dabbles on talk pages. tedder (talk) 01:15, 8 February 2012 (UTC)
Since my run-in with you I merely stepped away from LDS related articles. Life's too short to let anonymous people offend you. I am by no means a heavily active editor, and so I guess that justifies having my input so easily dismissed, yet I have since taken on the most active role at 'Hammock Camping', had my hand at creating an original article 'Thom Dutch', and 'dabbled' in minor edits at a few other talk pages (Scooter Libby, Free Presbyterian, Joe Clark, Flock of Seagulls). But if minor editors are going to be treated so discourteously, I think I'll have done with WP altogether and head back to real life where I'm treated with more courtesy.--Canadiandy talk 01:53, 8 February 2012 (UTC)
You've made what, 30 edits to hammock camping? Averaging maybe a half-dozen edits per month? And you think that's sufficient reason to ask other editors (active or not) to change what they are doing on Wikipedia? Telling editors to stop editing and to compain that your point of view isn't being preserved on pages isn't exactly productive. Most "minor editors" actually do productive editing on wikipedia; for every productive edit (deemed as any edit to an article) you've made 10 talk page edits. Wikipedia isn't a social network or a forum for lobbying. Generally editors have a basic understanding of Wikipedia's 5 pillars before they have a right to claim their biased point of view should be heeded. Please don't reply on my talk page ever again; I'm standing behind my assessment that you are a troll who has no intent on being a productive editor on Wikipedia. tedder (talk) 02:06, 8 February 2012 (UTC)

Beverly Hills High School Rival Is Culver City High School

I have personal knowledge of this fact and have provided citation below. I attended the Los Angeles Westside Tri-district of Beverly/Culver/Santa Monica. It is a known fact that Beverly and Culver are long standing historical rivals. Here I have provided citation to one of many articles, this being highly relevant being a local paper, that state them as rivals, please place into Beverly Hills High School page as I am not skilled enough on this system to format it for reference. ^ Cohen, Mike (17 November 2011). The cite given on the page ("NCES") didn't support it. Feel free to use that citation in the reference. Do your best to include that reference and I'll do it for you. tedder (talk) 15:35, 9 February 2012 (UTC)

Thank you. I would appreciate it if you would please help me by placing it in the Beverly Hills High School page. I am not skilled enough on this system to add it properly. Onthispage (talk) 15:42, 9 February 2012 (UTC)

No problem! Here it is. I found a URL and also put it in the ref tag. There is a fancy citation template that can be used, but this is a super-basic one that conveys the correct information. Cheers, tedder (talk) 15:51, 9 February 2012 (UTC)

WikiProject Slovenia request

Hi, Tedder. could you please arrange for the Tedderbot to index new pages of interest to WikiProject Slovenia, in the same manner as it's been done for e.g. Wikipedia:WikiProject Serbia. The results should be posted at Wikipedia:WikiProject Slovenia/Recent articles. --Eleassar my talk 00:52, 20 February 2012 (UTC)

Hi- place 'Slovenia' here: User:AlexNewArtBot/Master. It'll put the results at User:AlexNewArtBot/SloveniaSearchResult. You can link to that result page or transclude it onto your 'recent articles' page. Cheers, tedder (talk) 01:15, 20 February 2012 (UTC)
Thanks. I've added 'Slovenia => Wikipedia:WikiProject Slovenia/Recent articles' to that page - I hope it's ok. --Eleassar my talk 08:34, 20 February 2012 (UTC)

Hey there, User:TedderBot/NewPageSearch/DnD/archive hasn't been updated in a while; just checking to see if this one is still running? BOZ (talk) 16:13, 23 February 2012 (UTC)

Hey, the archives may not be working (I think I broke them last summer) but the bot is certainly running. Here's the result page: User:AlexNewArtBot/DnDSearchResult. Looking at the history, I'm guessing there are zero pages, and an empty result page doesn't get updated. Further confirmation is that DnD is on the master list: User:AlexNewArtBot/Master. This was flagged by AlexNewArtBot/BadSearchResult and TedderBot/NewPageSearch/Bad/errors, but should not have been. A shame you discouraged the LLC tag. To me it's patently obvious that his is a corporate account. Google the gentleman's name and you find a strategic marketing consultancy. Letting him run with LLC would have made that far clearer to all. Fiddle Faddle (talk) 00:48, 7 March 2012 (UTC)

Indeed, and I know what you are saying. Still, a proper signature would be helpful (which still hasn't happened). tedder (talk) 00:58, 7 March 2012 (UTC)
Oh dear. The proliferation of stuff last night is wondrous to behold, though I suspect I'd have chosen a different word. Now, you're an admin. Can this behaviour be gently cajoled into decent, correct behaviour by you and/or your fellow admins? I've rarely seen such an ego at play unless it was one Raymond Aaron a year or more ago. Fiddle Faddle (talk) 09:59, 7 March 2012 (UTC)
The article is in better shape as an article. There is still work to do on it. Fiddle Faddle (talk) 15:52, 7 March 2012 (UTC)
The article is much revised. It would be appropriate, should you choose, for you to visit the AfD again and say whether you favour keeping or deletion. Mira Costa High School

I would appreciate it if you would mind explaining why you believe Bill Fauver should not be listed under the "Distinguished Teacher" heading. I decided to include that information because I went to Mira Costa and the man is universally respected in the school and within the community-at-large. I think it's a very relevant point of pride for Mira Costa that Fauver was so honored. Dsboxer (talk) 17:29, 10 March 2012 (UTC)

Notability of individuals in an article list is usually handled through WP:NLIST. A shorthand is WP:WTAF. In other words, a "notable" or "distinguished" individual is considered notable because they have an article on Wikipedia. It doesn't sound like this individual qualifies. For instance, compare being one of the county's best teachers with being national "teacher of the year"; there's a large gulf. tedder (talk) 17:34, 10 March 2012 (UTC)

TedderBot Fix to Get Archiving Working Again

Hi, I would like to suggest the following fix in ExistingResultsFetcher.java to get the TedderBot archiving working again. On line 57, replace the regular expression with the following:

^\\s*\\*\\s*(.*?)\\s*.*?<span\\sid=\"result\">'''\\[\\[(.*?)\\]\\].*?score:\\s*\\d+(.*?)\\s*$

''' has been added. Thanks, --Bamyers99 (talk) 01:30, 12 March 2012 (UTC)

Demeester, San Marino

You pointed out the "write the article" essay.

Look here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:PROFESSOR

5. The person holds or has held a named chair appointment or "Distinguished Professor" appointment at a major institution of higher education and research (or an equivalent position in countries where named chairs are uncommon).

Now look here. http://www.usc.edu/uscnews/experts/246.html

Holder of Jeffrey P. Smith Chair in Surgery

So he qualifies on point 5.

But he is also "Expert in swallowing disorders, lung cancer, Barrett's esophagus, and thoracic surgery". I do admit that the man does not have a hit song. Auchansa (talk) 04:44, 12 March 2012 (UTC)

Oh, I see you are an administrator so if there is a rule that I don't know of, please tell me. Also please do not punish me with your administrative powers if you do not like Demeester or don't want him named. Auchansa (talk) 04:47, 12 March 2012 (UTC)

Were the Mesopotamians Vietnamese?

How come your bot "Wikipedia:WikiProject Vietnam" has included my newly created article on Zu-buru-dabbeda, the ancient Babylonian incantations against field pests? Is it broken? Deranged? BigEars42 (talk) 06:44, 28 February 2012 (UTC)

The folks that set up the Vietnam search gave it points whenever accented characters are used- see the bottom half of the rules. It creates a large number of false results. I don't know why that's wanted. tedder (talk) 11:45, 28 February 2012 (UTC)
Hey, representing WP:Vietnam here-- I can imagine that the accented characters were added because they appear in the Vietnamese language, but then they also appear in many other languages too, which led to the above confusion, so obviously what's there right now isn't the right solution. I'm willing to help fix things, as long as someone can lend me a clue or give me a crash course on how it works :) --dragfyre_ʞןɐʇc 07:10, 14 March 2012 (UTC)

NRM template

you appear to have locked the NRM template, unfortunately you neglected to revert the disruptive IP edits before doing so. Mormonism (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) and The Seventh-day Adventist Church are both long standing items on the 'List of NRMs' article, and they constitute two of the largest groups in this category, as such they should be reinstated. -- Semitransgenic talk. 19:49, 7 March 2012 (UTC)

See WP:WRONG. If nothing else, it's good encouragement to come to consensus on the talk page; I see you haven't participated in the recent discussion. tedder (talk) 22:17, 7 March 2012 (UTC)
what justification do you have for locking the page until the 28th of March? Seems excessive. The initial objection was based on a falsehood: namely, that the 'list of NRMs' article did not contain said items, nothing to discuss. Semitransgenic talk. 22:33, 7 March 2012 (UTC)
Edit warring and consensus. I spent quite a bit of time at WP:RFPP; pages with active discussion many not need as much time, fairly isolated pages and templates generally need more time. If you think it's a big issue, feel free to bring it up at WP:ANI or even WP:RFPP. tedder (talk) 22:49, 7 March 2012 (UTC)
Edit warring? what evidence can you present for this? you offered the opinion that giving a 3RR warning to a multiple reverting IP was excessive, yet now you feel it is necessary to block an article for 3 weeks after another IP edited it?. Is it the case that you believe the contributions of a random drive-by IP is representative of a view that is based on reliable sourcing? or perhaps you feel that the template content in question was not reliably sourced? I can assure you, it was. Forgive me for finding your actions somewhat disingenuous but i don't see any sense in it. Semitransgenic talk. 23:22, 7 March 2012 (UTC)

Tedder, I feel we've reached a reasonable consensus to move the page from Template:New Religious Movements, Cults, and Sects to New Religious Movements. I think this will require admin action, since the template is currently locked. Would you mind performing the move? Thanks. ~Adjwilley (talk) 15:10, 16 March 2012 (UTC)

Perhaps my request was premature...It seemed like there was consensus for a couple days, but now the discussion is hopping again. I haven't been able to quite figure out what Semitransgenic wants. Anyway, if you get a chance, there are a couple edit requests that have been there for a while, including one to fix a redlink. ~Adjwilley (talk) 02:12, 18 March 2012 (UTC)
(talk page stalker)I've fixed the non-controversial redlink problem. There are other editors who may be willing to take on the other edits, you might check in with one of the more widely read noticeboards. You'll note Tedder hasn't edited in several days. Valfontis (talk) 04:42, 18 March 2012 (UTC)

Context

See Interprovincial Standards 'what links here'. It is a new article about trade qualifications, but it seems to be linking to your Canadian highways section. Just thought I would let you know. --Canoe1967 (talk) 17:49, 14 March 2012 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) It's nothing to worry about. Tedder runs a bot that helps WikiProjects find new articles. (It's not "his" Canadian highways section, it's a page generated by a project he took over from a departed user with input from WikiProjects for the search parameters.) It's a good bot, but not perfect, so sometimes there are false hits on articles that don't actually have anything to do with the topic areas the bot is programmed to find--in this case, the bot thought maybe the new article had something to do with Canadian highways. It's not hurting anything as far as I can tell, is there some other reason for the concern? (like too many false hits and a need to reprogram the bot?) Valfontis (talk) 19:04, 14 March 2012 (UTC)
No further concerns at all. Sounds like a very handy bot. I just thought I would point it out in case it was an actual issue. I see that it does get false postives, but that is far better than missing a worthy link. I removed the wikilink from my above entry, I hope that is sop.--Canoe1967 (talk) 19:18, 14 March 2012 (UTC)
If it were my talk page I would leave the link because I need them for context (I don't see that there's anything wrong with "what links here" linking to pages other than article pages), but I'll leave it to Ted to replace the link if he wants. Valfontis (talk) 19:28, 14 March 2012 (UTC)

It seems that my 'what links here' is sort order by date link added. I don't know if this is a default that can be adjusted. I would think that removing the wikilink above would just leave pertinent hits near the top.--Canoe1967 (talk) 19:53, 14 March 2012 (UTC)

The sort order is by the date the page on which the article is linked was created, oldest first. I honestly don't have any idea why it would matter that non-article pages show up there. It's easy enough to filter them out. It's also often helpful to have a record of discussions about an article--probably not in this case as this discussion doesn't actually have to do with the article's content. Anyway, let's not further clutter Ted's page with this, since the initial question was answered. If you have further concerns, there must be a place to discuss "what links here" hits in general. Maybe start at the village pump. Valfontis (talk) 22:34, 14 March 2012 (UTC)

Interprovincial Standards nothing to do with roads

Hi. The article Interprovincial Standards added to Wikipedia:WikiProject Canada Roads/New articles shouldn't be there, as it has nothing to do with roads. --Wtshymanski (talk) 20:50, 14 March 2012 (UTC)

See the section above this one. It is just a false hit by a bot that someone is using for their highway article. Completely harmless. I removed your wikilink as well, or this talk section would show as a hit. I hope you or Tedder don't mind--Canoe1967 (talk) 20:56, 14 March 2012 (UTC)
I'm back from Istanbul. Will reply more later, but yeah, the whole idea of userspace links polluting mainspace isn't an issue. tedder (talk) 06:36, 19 March 2012 (UTC)

Redirect of Redlight King to Kazzer page

Can't this page be redirected to the Kazzer page, since people looking up this artist just end up hitting a brick wall with no results? Kazzer is the man centered in the project called 'Redlight King,' plus the project has had two very successful singles ("Old Man" and "Bullet In My Hand"), so this at least deserves a redirect. --Crocodileman (talk) 21:22, 15 March 2012 (UTC)

Try using an {{edit protected}} template on the talk page. Valfontis (talk) 14:40, 16 March 2012 (UTC)

Rectangles in edit summaries?

Confused, why does TedderBot use solid rectangles (example) in its edit summaries? Nyttend (talk) 15:08, 17 March 2012 (UTC)

Yeah, it's a really, really crude sparkline. tedder (talk) 23:10, 19 March 2012 (UTC)

Snort, copying. Ouch. I know Lees Camp, mostly from driving Hwy6 many times. Not for the OHV stuff; I have trouble understanding a hobby that requires transport before the hobby begins: dirtbiking, skiing.. tedder (talk) 00:56, 20 March 2012 (UTC)

Seriously

Having your buddies come make changes won't stop me. MzNobody (talk) 23:46, 20 March 2012 (UTC)

"your buddies" is what happens when you start making random out-of-context and unthreaded posts on talk pages. See WP:TPS. While you are there please see WP:OWN and WP:CIVIL. tedder (talk) 00:37, 21 March 2012 (UTC)
Some of the pages you direct me to do not even make sense cause they are not relevant. Allow me to reiterate for you. That sentence still does not meet the criteria in order to be labeled a disclaimer. Your own post on my talk page only further validates my claim. Is that statement denying anything? No, it is not. If you think that statement is a denial of any kind then I suggest that you seek help so you are better able to determine the appropriate context of terms used in the American version of the English language. Does that sentence renounce any claim I make? No, it does not. Does it deny any truth or validity of any statement or is it some kind of refusal to be associated with anything? No, it isn't. Thus, it's not a disclaimer as you ignorantly assumed it was. Ignorant is used in the proper context here as well since to be ignorant of something is to simply lack knowledge of it. It's a fact and whether or not you get upset with facts is your own problem that you need to address. How ironic that you all call in your buddies, like your own little clique, to get what you want...just like how a 2 year old throws a temper tantrum. The *civil* way to address this would have been to say there should not be any unlinked text in the external links section. Simple, effective and not using misapplied terms to further your cause. If you have a problem with my sentence structure I suggest that you refrain from posting any other irrelevant stuff on my talk page. I speculate that you will now use mystic abilities and claim that you can ascertain tone using this type of asynchronous communication. Good luck with that. Sorry, but I cannot be bullied...nice try though. MzNobody (talk) 04:47, 23 March 2012 (UTC)
My original intent was to tell you to avoid putting disclaimers in the external links area. You wikilawyered over the proper term, but thanks for understanding. Have a good day. tedder (talk) 20:06, 23 March 2012 (UTC)

New articles architecture

Is there perhaps a problem with User:AlexNewArtBot/ArchitectureSearchResult? The usual update doesn't seem to have come through today. - Ipigott (talk) 17:08, 22 March 2012 (UTC)

Hey, not totally sure. It should be okay, but I some tradeoffs on the design, which means occasionally skipping a day can sometimes happen, especially given the hardware it runs on. tedder (talk) 17:21, 22 March 2012 (UTC)
Thanks. It seems to be fine again today. Congratulations on producing a tool which catches most of the new articles on architecture and lists comparatively few which are really out of scope. - Ipigott (talk) 10:42, 23 March 2012 (UTC)
Hooray! I'm glad it works. I simply copied AlexNewArtBot, so not a lot of brainpower was required. tedder (talk) 20:09, 23 March 2012 (UTC)

Saw this on your to-do list. I stumbled across it, down the rabbit trail from Bend, Oregon to Knife River Corporation and so on. See what you think. It certainly needs more work, but I think it is much better. The history of electric companies appears to be just as tangled as that of railroads and dotcoms... Invitation to events: bot, template, and Gadget makers wanted

I thought you might want to know about some upcoming events where you can learn more about MediaWiki customization and development, extending functionality with JavaScript, the future of ResourceLoader and Gadgets, the new Lua templating system, how to best use the web API for bots, and various upcoming features and changes. We'd love to have power users, bot maintainers and writers, and template makers at these events so we can all learn from each other and chat about what needs doing.

Check out the the Berlin hackathon in June, the developers' days preceding Wikimania in July in Washington, DC, and our other events.

You can register now for the Berlin event and if you need financial help or visa help, just mention that in the registration form.

Best wishes! - Sumana Harihareswara, Wikimedia Foundation's Volunteer Development Coordinator. Please reply on my talk page, here or at mediawiki.org. Sumana Harihareswara, Wikimedia Foundation Volunteer Development Coordinator 13:36, 2 April 2012 (UTC)

Student life at GANN

Article: Gann Academy, edit context

Sorry I'm new at this. Why were all my edits unencyclopedic? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Abec1995 (talkcontribs) 21:43, 10 April 2012 (UTC)

Please see the article guidelines for secondary schools. Roughly, every school has clubs. Listings of clubs aren't terribly helpful unless they are unique- if Gann had a competition chainsaw juggling team that had coverage on ESPN and New York Times, it would certainly be worth mentioning. The same thing applies to student government. Read the article guidelines to give you some ideas. Great information to include would be state championships (not placings, but first place) for sports and clubs or things that have been covered to some degree. tedder (talk) 22:09, 10 April 2012 (UTC)

Article KCBS-TV Notable Former Personalities

Hi and thanks for the help merging the different versions of this section. I did not mean to make so many edits in a short time, but I did mess up my HTML couple of times and was obliged to repeat my edits. I don't know how the edit conflict occured, I assume it was my doing, but I'm now ready to leave the section alone for a while! Cheers, Nick, Lantana11 (talk) 00:42, 16 April 2012 (UTC)Lantana11Lantana11 (talk) 00:42, 16 April 2012 (UTC)V

Hi Nick, I did some edits this morning when you got the edit conflict, that's when the [[brackets]] disappeared. I got a conflict with you this afternoon but patched everything back in. Note I'm still planning on going through and removing the individuals who aren't notable by Wikipedia's guidelines. Let me know if you have questions about that. 01:36, 16 April 2012 (UTC)
I'll leave any further revisions to you or others of knowledge who may care to make them. I am not a frequent Wikipedian, and so I'm not particularly familiar with the guidlines per notability. In fact what I wanted to do was put a group of names out there (and tried to be scrupulously accurate about the dates) that I thought were familiar figures at the station for a considerable amount of time and who viewers might remember. But I'm aware that is subject to further editing. Thanks very much for your time and your response, Nick Lantana11 (talk) 02:42, 16 April 2012 (UTC)Lantana11Lantana11 (talk) 02:42, 16 April 2012 (UTC)
Don't worry, most of them are good- the rough guideline is any with wiki articles should be there, the rest need to go. tedder (talk) 02:44, 16 April 2012 (UTC)

Abuse Filter on the Article Feedback Tool

Hey there :). You're being contacted because you're an edit filter manager, At the moment, we're developing Version 5 of the Article Feedback Tool, which you may or may not have heard about. If you haven't; for the first time, this will involve a free-text box where readers can submit comments :). Obviously, there's going to be junk, and we want to minimise that junk. To do so, we're working the Abuse Filter into the tool.

For this to work, we need people to write and maintain filters. I'd be very grateful if you could take a look at the discussion here and the attached docs, and comment and contribute! Thanks :). Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 18:33, 17 April 2012 (UTC)

Sunset Strip Diaries

Hi, Tedder. Saw you reverted the addition of this book to The Decline of Western Civilization Part II: The Metal Years. I went through the IPs contributions and pulled it out of several others. You might like to have a look at the note I left on the IP's talk. (permalink) Thanks for your work. Cheers,  – OhioStandard (talk) 14:21, 1 May 2012 (UTC)

Yeah, I saw the note you left, that's why I didn't leave an "advert" template. Thanks for the note, minding Valfontis' Law. Guess I'll have to keep watching those articles. tedder (talk) 14:27, 1 May 2012 (UTC)
Sure; thanks for the link to Valfontis' law. I tend to go overboard in not biting newcomers, I know, even when they seem to be troublemakers. In fact, I tend towards inviting them to come over and stay in my guest house, and sure, they can bring their girlfriend and two dogs and their drum set. You get the picture. I need to stop doing that.  – OhioStandard (talk) 14:46, 1 May 2012 (UTC)

But I'm sure you and the boyfriend and cat won't mind sharing?  – OhioStandard (talk) 09:48, 4 May 2012 (UTC)

1992 Riots

Tedder,

The problem was the sudden mention of random, unknown sources of information. The article mentions Park and Rhyu and Hwang and Rhee as if they had been referenced earlier, or as if we should know who they are and thus should place importance on their statements.

In this situation, there was a need to fill in some aspect of who the heck these people were - or we could have just said "Mr. Smith said this, Mrs. Smith said that, and Tedder & JMG38 said something else". I'm sure that Mr. Smith, Mrs. Smith, Tedder & JMG38 are nice people - but why are they quoted in the article?!

In the case of Professor Park, the fact that he is head of Asian Studies adds further value to his comments - he's not a Professor of mathematics. I would like to put that part of the reference back in - but I'd like to hear your comments first. I'll look back here on your page for your thoughts.

Thanks.

Jmg38 (talk) 02:00, 3 May 2012 (UTC)

Hi Jmg38, contextualizing it is important, and I appreciate that you've labeled students and such. I'm worried about putting in a resume there, but you make a good point- it's relevant to his scholarship. Go ahead and re-add it. tedder (talk) 02:14, 3 May 2012 (UTC)
I'll go in and do it now. Thanks for the discussion - now go outside and enjoy a nice spring evening!! Jmg38 (talk) 02:18, 3 May 2012 (UTC)

Hells Angels article split

Are you planning on revamping the content drastically? Otherwise it looks like a content fork. tedder (talk) 20:23, 4 May 2012 (UTC)

As per the NYPD pages ... to develop, or allow to develop, both separately.
Obviously I don't refute any of the above pages but I do think the quantity of crime related reporting was imbalanced in comparison to the cultural and historical aspects of the topic. It needs a serious looking at as it is a mish-mash of tenses, e.g. reports of allegations and 'future' undecided court case which have now passed but not been updated, but I have not got the time to do so today.
I don't know the Wikipedia as well as you but if there is not a policy which says, WP:NOT_A_TABLOID_PAPER, then I think we need one. It strikes me that a lot of the reporting in the area is sensationalistic and unnecessarily detailed. Splitting the topic allows those who do wish to continue reporting on the crime angles, or angels, to do so. --Bridge Boy (talk) 20:31, 4 May 2012 (UTC)
BTW, I was once pulled up for putting in two categories, one of which was a sub category of the other, e.g. Motorcycle clubs and Outlaw Motorcycle Clubs.
Why on earth do we need every State listed when we can just have "Gangs in the United States"? It looks a bit superfluous and NPOV to me. --Bridge Boy (talk) 20:34, 4 May 2012 (UTC)
You removed this from your page, go ahead and reply at the talk page of the article. I agree, pulling it up to "gangs in the US" is great, your edit didn't imply you were doing that. Edit summaries help with intent. tedder (talk) 20:36, 4 May 2012 (UTC)

School sections in place articles

As you are a Schools' Project member I'd like your advice and view on schools that appear in place articles, often under their own section, being there presumably because they are not that notable in themselves or that nobody has yet got around to writing an article about them. I tend to remove anything that does not concur with general guidelines, but should these sections also fall under school article guidelines (WP:WPSCH/AG) regarding what should be included and how the information is structured within a section ? Cheers. Acabashi (talk) 16:29, 9 May 2012 (UTC)

Hey! Schools don't have to be notable to appear on a locality article. In fact, it's standard operating procedure to redirect "NonNotable Elementary School" to "Placename" and put a section into that article. So the locality ends up being a listing of schools, notable or not. This is a good thing, except in municipalities that are too large to list all schools. Does this help? I can find some examples or pointers if you'd like. tedder (talk) 18:29, 9 May 2012 (UTC)
Many thanks for the prompt reply tedder. Sorry to bother you again. When a school without an article is added as its own section, or part of an "Education" section, to a location, and has a considerable amount of text, is it advisable from your point of view (or are there WP guidelines ?) to structure that body text per schools' guidelines: "History", "Site", Curriculum" etc etc, not of course with sub sections, ie what to include and in what order ? This seems like a sub topic on which "WP schools" could advise :) Many thanks. Acabashi (talk) 20:40, 9 May 2012 (UTC)
No problem, Acabashi. I'm glad I can help, even if half of it is giving my opinion or guessing. I think the issue is that it isn't really a "schools" thing, it's a "place article" thing. I think this is what you're after, right? Wikipedia:WikiProject Cities/US Guideline#Education. tedder (talk) 20:42, 9 May 2012 (UTC)
After a trawl around guidelines and projects, I can't find an answer to my specific problem of being confronted with a large amount of text about a non-notable school as part of a section in a place article, that is almost a mini article in its own right and will often overweight a short place article. I think for now it's a matter of discretion, but I will edit this kind of text broadly in line with WP:WPSCHOOLS/AG, but not with its obvious support, and argue the toss if challenged. Many thanks for your help Tedder. Acabashi (talk) 07:52, 10 May 2012 (UTC)
Yeah, this really isn't a school project issue. It's how much text (of any sort) should be on a cities page, or on any article page. Which article was this? A quick glance at your contribs didn't indicate anything. tedder (talk) 22:48, 10 May 2012 (UTC)

Multiple questions:

  • User:AlexNewArtBot/TexasSearchResult brings up recent new pages on the Texas project. Is there a search equivalent for WP Women's History? If so, could you provide me with a link to the page?
  • Prior to recent implementation of 1.20wmf1, Tedder Bot or AlexNewArtBot search results relevant to any given article showed up under "What Links Here". Permanently, I thought, because I could go there and check any page. As of today, I find "What Links Here" cleared on all those old search results. It makes for a cleaner list for "What Links Here", but it also erased the history of those searches on a given article. Was this intended? I kind of liked the search evidence there. On every article I've created PRIOR to the implementation, it's gone. On the two articles I created since the implentation, those search results are there. Maile66 (talk) 22:36, 1 May 2012 (UTC)
(1) Doesn't look like there's anything for Women's History. I'd be happy to help you set one up if you have an idea of what the search terms should be.
I think the search terms should be decided by that Project. I'm going to post over on that talk page and have them get in touch with you. Can you leave this here for a week or so, giving someone time to respond?
(2) The "WLH" doesn't work because the archives aren't working. I think. If not, can you give me some examples? For instance, the top Texas result (right now) is Samsung Galaxy SL I9003, and it certainly shows up on WLH. tedder (talk) 22:47, 1 May 2012 (UTC)
It's the archives, I'm pretty sure.Maile66 (talk) 23:01, 1 May 2012 (UTC)

Well, it's probably just you and me, Kid

I have the feeling it's going to be just you and me setting up this bot. I've tried to contact individuals and have not gotten desired results. Since, I know nothing about what search terms would work, you need to help me come up with something. This is what I know about the project:

  • Women's history
  • Individual biographies
  • Organizations
  • Movements and issues
  • Fictional characters can be included
  • Works of art that deal with women
  • Literature that is focused on women

On their main page, they have a lot of "could be, but not necessarily..." things. The editor who set up the main page has not been active for about a year.

So, let's see what we can come up with. It can be changed if there are complaints.Maile66 (talk) 13:29, 3 May 2012 (UTC)

Have you thought about connecting with the Gendergap list (linked on page)? Someone there might be interested in helping out. Valfontis (talk) 19:26, 3 May 2012 (UTC)
Yeah, I'll need help. I can't come up with the "search keywords". I can help get them coded into a searchlist though. tedder (talk) 19:27, 3 May 2012 (UTC)
Thank you. I just joined Gendergap and have sent an email for assistance. Let's see what happens.Maile66 (talk) 21:13, 3 May 2012 (UTC)

Got some advice on the terms

Please look at Viriditas under Proposed Terms. Will that work for you? And can you create the rules for this bot? As for the stub template, I have already created that. And there was already an existing category for Stub Class Women's History articles. Please advise what I need to do next. Maile66 (talk) 12:06, 5 May 2012 (UTC)

Initial terms set up and we are puzzled

We have some tentative rules at User:AlexNewArtBot/WomensHistory, but they are picking up some articles that only seem to match the "historical" rule, and should score 10. What am I missing? Rich Farmbrough, 21:48, 10 May 2012 (UTC).

Note: "historical" rule here means the rule with the word historical in it. Rich Farmbrough, 19:38, 11 May 2012 (UTC).
Hey, it links to the ruleset version on the search result page. The bot thinks it was matching the current ruleset, and looking at the changes, you added "equality", which logged as matching the article of Suze Groeneweg. So what's the problem? tedder (talk) 22:46, 10 May 2012 (UTC)
Hi, Tedder. I know nothing about coding, so that's between you two. But the problem is that almost everything that's appeared on WomensHistorySearchResult has nothing to do with women's history, or even women at all. Maile66 (talk) 17:18, 11 May 2012 (UTC)
I understand. I'm a nerd, I totally get it, but I'm horrible at choosing search terms and knowing how to make it work well. Think of the rules page as a keyword search (like google) but uglier. The pipe (vertical, "|") means "or". So this line:
8 /(gender|female|women's) equality/
gives 8 points to "gender equality", "female equality", and "women's equality". Can you help provide better search terms? tedder (talk) 17:24, 11 May 2012 (UTC)
Those are Rich's search terms, because I drew a blank on the search terms. So, I think maybe Rich is going to have to figure that out. My snag on the search terms is that I haven't been that involved with that project. In a perfect world, somebody involved in structuring that project would come up with something. But I put out feeders, and only Rich and Viriditis - neither part of that project - came forward to help.Maile66 (talk) 17:32, 11 May 2012 (UTC)
Yep [{Suze Groenenweg]] is a good match. I looked at , for example Christophe (Amsterdam) which looked like a 10 pointer to me, and set up a small perl program to score it, in case I was missing something. It scored 10 points, not enough, but the bot decided to include it. Rich Farmbrough, 19:38, 11 May 2012 (UTC).
Fun and profit with perl, eh? Anyhow, it looks like it's ignoring your default score. I'll have to look into that, or you can just halve the regex scores and use the default of 10. tedder (talk) 20:21, 11 May 2012 (UTC)
OK we'll do that. Rich Farmbrough, 21:40, 11 May 2012 (UTC).
Today's run was much better. But there are still some things on it that puzzle me: Crawley Development Corporation, Deadliest Warrior video game, The Andy Griffith Show, and Jim Reese (Texas Politician). And I'm wondering what we can use as a search term to pull up pre-20th Century subject matter, if any are being created. You don't want me touching code, and I'm not sure I've figured out the scores, but is this workable to add, with some tweaking by Rich or Tedder?

Yep, we can strengthen earlier articles the same way the Middle Ages search set does. I think the score for "all female" is already pretty high, it just needs another medium sized hit to be picked up - we don't want every woman who attended an "all female" school, or those teaching at such an institution. I'd rather resolve the false positives before adding rules though. Rich Farmbrough, 18:17, 12 May 2012 (UTC).
So stuff like Crawley we may just have to live with. "Dame Caroline Haslett, educated locally, was a pioneering electrical engineer and writer, and was the British Electricity Authority's first female member." I have set "first female" as automatic inclusion, and for stubs to work I don't think we have any choice. If I were writing from scratch I'd maybe divide the score by log(article length) or something. I'll look at some date weighting now. Rich Farmbrough, 18:23, 12 May 2012 (UTC).
As long as we have some time before you add these, I'll continue to add and modify the above until you say otherwise.Maile66 (talk) 19:40, 12 May 2012 (UTC)

May 13

Tedderbot says it picked up 2536 articles this time, and added 969,317 bytes. Maile66 (talk) 15:47, 13 May 2012 (UTC)

Let's give Tedder a break and discuss at User talk:AlexNewArtBot/WomensHistory. Rich Farmbrough, 16:06, 13 May 2012 (UTC).

What's the score?

What does the "score" mean as reported on the right hand side of entries on the Wikipedia:WikiProject Film/New articles#Current bot results page and at the User:AlexNewArtBot/IrelandSearchResult page? Thank you. — O'Dea (talk) 06:54, 12 May 2012 (UTC)

Hi! The score has to do with how the pages were decided to match those projects. Let's look at Ireland. Cydnie Hunter-McCullough has 64 points, based on these keywords and points. You can look at the "error log" which shows match points. That article matched many things- "ireland", "irish", "ulster", "belfast", and points were taken for matching "british". tedder (talk) 23:11, 14 May 2012 (UTC)
Oh, that's interesting. I have been wondering what it meant. Thank you. — O'Dea (talk) 04:00, 15 May 2012 (UTC)

ALexNewArtBot search in Indonesia ?

Hi, are you the user who operate AlexNewArtBot?. I see this bot result in [[6]], and i think there is some error in the result. There is some article not related to Indonesia in the result. What is the count method to give that result? Maybe we should discuss a new method so the result more optimal. Thanks. Regards. *Annas* (talk) 09:25, 12 May 2012 (UTC)

Hi! Yes, I operate it. You can see the rules that gave those results, and the log will tell you how the points got assigned to specific articles. Working on the rules will give better results, but you have to know what matched poorly and what keywords should be in there. tedder (talk) 23:08, 14 May 2012 (UTC)

Tedder-you understand coding, I hope?

Looks like Rich Farmbrough isn't around today. Based on what the Newsroom at The Signpost has for tonite's post, I don't know his status. Meanwhile, can you read my note, here: User talk:AlexNewArtBot/WomensHistory, and make some coding adjustments so we don't get such a huge amount of results before Tedderbot runs tonite? Not knowing coding, I don't know what the current configuation does. But it would be nice to have the results be about women. Anyway, if you can, just wait and see if Rich surfaces tonight. If not, can you tweak the coding? Maile66 (talk) 20:11, 14 May 2012 (UTC)

Replied on the talk page. Basically, you should be able to read the "rules" and think of them as search terms. They are in a complicated format, but.. look through the "errors" page and the "rules" page and you can probably tune the keywords. I'm bad at keywords- but I can do the programming. tedder (talk) 23:06, 14 May 2012 (UTC)
I kind of know what you're saying - but I don't. Can't you just go over there and lower the points? I don't see anywhere on there it mentioned the number 10, for instance. Can't you just do that, lower the points and see what happens tonite? Maile66 (talk) 23:36, 14 May 2012 (UTC)
Yeah, I can lower the points. The reason it got "10" is because it was "5" twice. Lowering it will help, but it really needs more keywords. Look at some of the other rules to get an idea of that. tedder (talk) 23:39, 14 May 2012 (UTC)
OK, but for tonite just lower the points. I came up with a whole bunch of keywords in the earlier post here. My basic instinct here is to throw in the towel, delete the whole thing, and just walk away and never come back to it.Maile66 (talk) 23:43, 14 May 2012 (UTC)
I lowered the points. Don't get frustrated! This could be of help. But it takes some patience to tune it. I saw the keywords you came up with, I thought Rich was going to add them. tedder (talk) 23:55, 14 May 2012 (UTC)
I know. And you've been wonderful about this. So has Rich. I had actually given up hope of having this when Rich showed up in his Mighty Mouse cape and volunteered to take care of this. Now, understandably, Rich has a bigger priority of his own. He has a notice on his talk page that he's not available. I look at what Rich did, and I don't see what you do because I'm not experienced at that kind of thing. To me, it's just a bunch of numbers and dashes and whatnots. Rich might have added the keywords, if today hadn't gone the way it did for him. The question is, how much would all those extra keywords clog up the bot if all those search terms were in there? And if my fingers touch it, will it go haywire? Maile66 (talk) 00:17, 15 May 2012 (UTC)

Those extra keywords will probably help. I'll make you a deal- you add it, I'll fix it, and we'll both be happy. Here's the super-basic example:

99 /keyword/

Just change "99" to the number of points you think it's worth. If you get it wrong, don't worry! It's just a bot, it doesn't get angry often. tedder (talk) 00:27, 15 May 2012 (UTC)

I just added two lines. We can start with that tonite. Please have a look. Thanks. Maile66 (talk) 00:41, 15 May 2012 (UTC)
Looks good. That inspired me to make some minor changes. We'll see how it looks tomorrow! tedder (talk) 00:43, 15 May 2012 (UTC)
What do the asterisks do? Maile66 (talk) 00:48, 15 May 2012 (UTC)
Now you're dipping your toe into Regular expression theory . That search pattern (a regular expression aka regex) is order-dependent. If I searched your last line, these would match:
/What do/
/What (do the|tedder)/
(the second one is a red herring- "do the" is matched, the pipe says "or", so either "do the" or "tedder" is needed. So where does the asterisk come into play? Well, a period will match a single character, asterisk matches zero or more, plus would match one or more. Some examples:
/What.do/
/What.*do/
/What.+do/
/do.*asterisks/
/What do(barf)*/ <--- yes, this works, "zero or more barfs"
/What dob*/ <--- yes, this works, "zero or more bs"
/What do(barf+)/ <--- no, this doesn't match, "zero or more barfs"
/What dob+)/ <--- no, this doesn't match, "zero or more bs"
That should give you a good start! So "feminist.*century" will match any paragraph that has those words IN THAT ORDER. It would not match "Saint Heroine was a 7th-century feminist". That's why I added a second rule that reversed the word order ("century.*feminism").
I've taken a few leaps and tangents in this explanation, explaining the dot, parenthesis, the pipe symbol, etc. I hope it gives you a good overview. Feel free to ask questions; this would take a week to explain to a computer science student, so speak up if parts of it don't make sense. tedder (talk) 02:16, 15 May 2012 (UTC)
"Programming for Wiki Dummies". Well, it at least gives me a better look inside what you're doing, even if it's going to take some time to sink in. I just added the rest of my search terms. Before the next bot run, could you please have a look. I didn't add the second rule as you did, because it's somewhat tedious to do all those at once. But it's a start. Maile66 (talk) 16:56, 15 May 2012 (UTC)
I added the second rules, too.Maile66 (talk) 17:38, 15 May 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for the Women's History New Articles

The One Zero One Zero One Zero Award
The Women's History search results are pretty good today. Your instructions were on the nose. Maybe a little future tweaking, but things seem to be on a roll. Maile66 (talk) 17:19, 16 May 2012 (UTC)

A kitten for you!

I'd like to thank you for creating/contributing to the article on Glendale, Utah. Since I currently live in this tiny town, I'd love to offer further information, such as the current political figures (e.g. mayor, council members), more detailed history, information about the town's annual Apple Festival, etc. Also, I can offer a better photo for the page, like of the Town Hall. Any information I can provide to help build up the page with more than just the general basics currently available, please let me know.

Thanks again!

AlexNewArtBot/ArchitectureSearchResult

Sorry to bother you about this one again but it hasn't produced any results since 18 May. I find it extremely useful as it really does turn up most articles on architecture. - Ipigott (talk) 20:34, 21 May 2012 (UTC)

Can anyone here answer these questions here? Thanks. --Mais oui! (talk) 14:44, 25 May 2012 (UTC)

I can answer part of it. See my question, and Tedder's response, right above this post. The bot has not been working for 7 days, so nothing got updated. Tedder himself needs to answer the rest for you. As far as I know, the bot, when it's working, only runs updates listed on this User:AlexNewArtBot page. England is not listed on there. It looks like User:Alex Bakharev is the one who blocked the English search result in 2011. He's probably the one one who would know why he did that. But it's Tedder who is running the bot now, so Tedder needs to respond. Maile66 (talk) 15:20, 25 May 2012 (UTC)

TedderBot/CurrentPruneBot/census

Tedder, the NewPageSearch over on TedderBot hasn't run since Saturday, May 19. The only thing that has been running since then is the CurrentPruneBot/census. Is something broken, or is this just a large project happening? Any ETA of when the NewPage search will be up and running again? Maile66 (talk) 00:44, 23 May 2012 (UTC)

Ahh, I sniffed something was happening but haven't done anything about it. Appears to be failing in the API calls. I'll look at it soon. tedder (talk) 01:29, 23 May 2012 (UTC)
Found it and patched the code. There was one place the searching was a little brittle, so it broke. Anyhow, it's running now! tedder (talk) 19:40, 27 May 2012 (UTC)
You're the best! Maile66 (talk) 21:49, 27 May 2012 (UTC)
