Philately Wikiproject

[edit]

Welcome to the Philately WikiProject. Hopefully you have a good time, start many new articles and can contribute lots to the existing ones as we need that. Cheers ww2censor (talk) 10:31, 17 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Ww2censor Thanks for the welcome! If you have the time, I had a couple quick questions about philately on Wikipedia. Clearly there are a lot of things that Wikipedia is not, and Wikipedia definitely isn't meant to be Colnect. But reviewing past PRODs, AfD discussions, etc., I can't get a good sense of what the community consensus is surrounding philatelic notability. Are there any proposed guidelines for notability in stamps beyond GNG? How can writers discern which articles can justifiably be created (and which will actually benefit Wikipedia long-term)? If you have any thoughts on this kind of thing I'd appreciate hearing them. Many thanks. SunTunnels (talk) 16:19, 17 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Before an editor removed several redlinks from this list, there were stamps listed for which articles could be written. The Category:Post and philately stubs lists over 500 article that are very short and I'm certain with a bit of work many could be expanded. While not sub articles, many of the individual country articles, such as Postage stamps and postal history of Nepal are quite short and lacking detail which could easily be expanded if you have access to decent references. Some have been written in other languages which could be translated but machine translation is not a good solution and is disabled but you will have to search for references and other languages seem to not care so much for verification like the enwiki. Choose topics you have knowledge of or have reference material for. Just ask if you need some other advise and good luck. ww2censor (talk) 00:50, 18 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Assistance with Kao Ly Ilean Her's page

[edit]

Hello,

Thank you for helping set up and write Ilean's page. I don't know how to add a photo of her and was wondering if you could post one that I can provide. It is not copyrighted, since it is my own personal photo I took of her. I am her sister.

There is also a lot of information about her in the 2021 Council on Asian Pacific Minnesotan's Annual Report pages 9-13:

https://mn.gov/capm/assets/2021%20Report%20-%20Council%20on%20Asian%20Pacific%20Minnesotans%20--%20MedRes%201_tcm1051-517142.pdf

If you could add her delegation with Betty Mccollough 2003-2005, Humanitarian Award 2006 and the creation of Maiv PAC 2016, it would be great.

Hnub Tsiab also renamed their "Live your best life" grant for her posthumously (Ilean named and helped create the grant). The grant is now funded through Ilean's endowment (it is the first endowment created by a Hmong woman--I have no citation) and is awarded annually.

Thank you,

Sharon Sharonkher (talk) 19:55, 2 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Sharonkher Hi Sharon,
Thanks very much for writing me, and I'm sorry for your loss. I was happy to write Ilean's page – she did a lot of important and notable work and I figured she should absolutely have an article. The 2021 CAPM report you linked to will no doubt help in adding sourced information, for sure; I'll work on improving the article sometime this month. Side question: the article currently uses 'Her' to refer to her (in the way articles use last names). Would it be more accurate to use 'Ilean' mainly instead? I'm afraid I don't have the necessary cultural awareness about Hmong names to know what's appropriate in that case.
As for the photo, having one would be a great addition to the article. I'm pretty new to Wikimedia Commons but the two easiest (copyright-free and stable) ways I think the photo could be uploaded are:
1) You use the 'wizard' process outlined at this link to upload the photo yourself to Wikimedia Commons, and then either you or I can add the photo to Ilean's article, or
2) You can upload the photo to a site like Flickr, set it to be public domain or copyright-free, and send me the link. I can import it from Flickr into Wikimedia Commons and use it in the article.
Feel free to go ahead and try either/both of these routes, and let me know if you have any questions at all! We can also find some way for you to send me the photo, and I could try to upload it. Thanks again. SunTunnels (talk) 02:37, 3 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

DCWC closing update

[edit]

The 2024 Developing Countries WikiContest has come to a close! After a thrilling finish to the event with a slew of submissions on the final day, we have our winners. With 608 points, Bronze Belt Buckle – 3rd place Thebiguglyalien (submissions) comes in third with his series of Kiribati and Botswanan submissions; Silver Belt Buckle – 2nd place Tuvalu BeanieFan11 (submissions) flies into second place at the last second with 771 points after a string of good articles about sportspersons; and after leading for much of contest's three months, Gold Belt Buckle – 1st place Generalissima (submissions) finishes with a whopping 798 points to take home the Gold Belt Buckle. Congratulations to our winners!

In addition to his spot in the top three, Tuvalu BeanieFan11 (submissions) also wins the special awards for submitting under the most countries (44 countries) and for writing the most articles about women (15 Did you know? nominations)! India Magentic Manifestations (submissions), after making 16 submissions under the Indian flag—15 of them good articles—receives the awards for most submissions for a single country and most featured or good articles promoted. For their submission of one FAC review, five FLC reviews, and 20 GAN reviews, Simongraham (submissions) wins for most article reviews.

The results of the contest have far exceeded any expectations the coordinators had for it at the beginning: among the submissions to the event were 3 FAs, 10 FLs, 88 GAs, dozens of article reviews of every kind, and more Did you know? submissions than we can count! Regardless of your level of participation, every contestant can be proud to have contributed towards a major step in countering the systemic bias on Wikipedia. Every year, millions of readers and editors around the globe use Wikipedia to educate themselves and communicate with others about parts of the world that often receive less attention than they deserve. Thank you for participating with us in the contest and contributing to this effort. The DCWC will return next year and we look forward to seeing you contribute again! However, before that...

We need your feedback! Join the conversation on the talk page to discuss your reflections on the contest (even if you didn't participate!) and help us make it better.

If you have any questions, please leave a message on the contest talk page or ask one of the coordinators: Ixtal (talk · contribs), sawyer777 (talk · contribs), or TechnoSquirrel69 (talk · contribs).
