WikiCup 2019 July newsletter

The third round of the 2019 WikiCup has now come to an end. The 16 users who made it to the fourth round needed to score at least 68 points, which is substantially lower than last year's 227 points. Our top scorers in round 3 were:

  • Norfolk Island Cas Liber, our winner in 2016, with 500 points derived mainly from a featured article and two GAs on natural history topics
  • South Carolina Adam Cuerden, with 480 points, a tally built on 16 featured pictures, the result of meticulous restoration work
  • Cascadia (independence movement) SounderBruce, a finalist in the last two years, with 306 points from a variety of submissions, mostly related to sport or the State of Washington
  • United States Usernameunique, with 305 points derived from a featured article and two GAs on archaeology and related topics

Contestants managed 4 (5) featured articles, 4 featured lists, 18 featured pictures, 29 good articles, 50 DYK entries, 9 ITN entries, and 39 good article reviews. As we enter the fourth round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Please also remember that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them, and it is imperative to claim them in the correct round; one FA claim had to be rejected because it was incorrectly submitted (claimed in Round 3 when it qualified for Round 2), so be warned! When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anything else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Soviet Union and the Korean War

Hi, the paragraph you deleted I had taken from Korean War. Am I not allowed to paste one paragraph from one page onto another even if it's relevant to both pages?--1.152.105.235 (talk) 08:22, 6 July 2019 (UTC)

Sorry about that. Another source had copied material from the Korean War article, so it appeared as if it were a copyright violation. However, copying within Wikipedia is allowed as long as you appropriately attribute it. See WP:PATT for information about how to do that. For this instance, I have gone ahead and restored your version. My apologies, StudiesWorld (talk) 10:06, 6 July 2019 (UTC)

Thank you very much for reminding me to change the language. I had actually forgotten to change it after i copied the content and it actually got paste in the article. I have changed the language and i apologize for the mistake. Thank you once again. --Jeromeenriquez (talk) 20:06, 7 July 2019 (UTC)

Jeromeenriquez, in the future, you could avoid this by changing the way that you write articles. Ideally, you would also avoid WP:Close paraphrasing, which is often the result of this method. Thanks for resolving this instance, StudiesWorld (talk) 20:12, 7 July 2019 (UTC)

Thanks

Sources needed for Days of the Year pages

You're probably not aware of this change, but Days of the Year pages are no longer exempt from WP:V and direct sources are required for additions. For details see the content guideline, the WikiProject Days of the Year style guide or the edit notice on any DOY page. Please do not add new additions to these pages without direct sources as the burden to provide them is on the editor who adds or restores material to these pages. Thank you. Toddst1 (talk) 20:22, 7 July 2019 (UTC)

Toddst1, thanks for letting me know. I had read the policy, but I misunderstood it. I have re-added the information with a source. Is that satisfactory? StudiesWorld (talk) 20:27, 7 July 2019 (UTC)
Awesome! Thanks for your help! Toddst1 (talk) 22:41, 7 July 2019 (UTC)

DYK for Obligation to Negotiate Access to the Pacific Ocean

On 8 July 2019, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Obligation to Negotiate Access to the Pacific Ocean, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Bolivia sued Chile in 2013 to regain land lost in 1884, claiming it had an Obligation to Negotiate Access to the Pacific Ocean? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Obligation to Negotiate Access to the Pacific Ocean. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Obligation to Negotiate Access to the Pacific Ocean), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Did you know?

Did you know that you can use the visual editor on a mobile device?

Every article has a pencil icon at the top. Tap on the pencil icon to start editing.

Edit Cards

Toolbar with menu opened

This is what the new Edit Cards for editing links in the mobile visual editor look like. You can try the prototype here: 📲 Try Edit Cards.

Welcome back to the Editing newsletter.

Since the last newsletter, the team has released two new features for the mobile visual editor and has started developing three more. All of this work is part of the team's goal to make editing on mobile web simpler.

Before talking about the team's recent releases, we have a question for you:

Are you willing to try a new way to add and change links?

If you are interested, we would value your input! You can try this new link tool in the mobile visual editor on a separate wiki.

Follow these instructions and share your experience:

📲 Try Edit Cards.

Recent releases

The mobile visual editor is a simpler editing tool, for smartphones and tablets using the mobile site. The Editing team has recently launched two new features to improve the mobile visual editor:

  1. Section editing
    • The purpose is to help contributors focus on their edits.
    • The team studied this with an A/B test. This test showed that contributors who could use section editing were 1% more likely to publish the edits they started than people with only full-page editing.
  2. Loading overlay
    • The purpose is to smooth the transition between reading and editing.

Section editing and the new loading overlay are now available to everyone using the mobile visual editor.

New and active projects

This is a list of our most active projects. Watch these pages to learn about project updates and to share your input on new designs, prototypes and research findings.

  • Edit cards: This is a clearer way to add and edit links, citations, images, templates, etc. in articles. You can try this feature now. Go here to see how: 📲Try Edit Cards.
  • Mobile toolbar refresh: This project will learn if contributors are more successful when the editing tools are easier to recognize.
  • Mobile visual editor availability: This A/B test asks: Are newer contributors more successful if they use the mobile visual editor? We are collaborating with 20 Wikipedias to answer this question.
  • Usability improvements: This project will make the mobile visual editor easier to use.  The goal is to let contributors stay focused on editing and to feel more confident in the editing tools.

Looking ahead

  • Wikimania: Several members of the Editing Team will be attending Wikimania in August 2019. They will lead a session about mobile editing in the Community Growth space. Talk to them about how editing can be improved.
  • Talk Pages: In the coming months, the Editing Team will begin improving talk pages and communication on the wikis.

Learning more

The VisualEditor on mobile is a good place to learn more about the projects we are working on. The team wants to talk with you about anything related to editing. If you have something to say or ask, please leave a message at Talk:VisualEditor on mobile.

Request on 20:01:43, 16 July 2019 for assistance on AfC submission by Emilythornberg

Hi! I am having trouble understanding why this page isn't getting approved. I've edited it a few times and put reliable sources where Aaron is mentioned on multiple records and personal albums. Could you please explain more thoroughly why I can't get approval here? Thank you!

Emilythornberg (talk) 20:01, 16 July 2019 (UTC)

Emilythornberg, thanks for reaching out. The reason it isn't getting approve is because the sources you are providing are not considered reliable under WP:RS and there are too few in-line citations for a WP:BLP. Reliable sources, for this topic, are primarily limited to magazines, newspapers, and other neutral, independent coverage. With a quick search, I couldn't find significant coverage of him, but if you have questions about particular sources, I can help you evaluate them. I hope that helps. 2019 Strait of Hormuz Crisis article proposal

Hey, I saw you created the June 2019 Gulf of Oman incident article. Can you create a 2019 Strait of Hormuz Crisis in the light of the current events, Iran seizes two UK oil tankers and other events.Mr.User200 (talk) 20:11, 19 July 2019 (UTC)
