Renaming images

[edit]

Thank you for giving images more meaningful names.

However, when it comes to Michelangelo, please do not rename images using "Michelangelo Buonarotti". Like many other artists of the Renaissance period (and later) he is known by a single name. It's actually considered a bit of a "wink" when people insist on using his family name. Similar cases are Donatello, Ghiberti, Brunelleschi, Verrocchio, Botticelli, Raphael, Titian, Giorgione, Tintoretto, Massaccio, Carravaggio. Articles and categories for these artists ought to be headed with the single name, likewise Rembrandt, Durer, van Eyck, Vermeer, Canaletto, Picasso, Matisse, le Corbusier, Gainsborough, Constable, Turner.

Leonardo da Vinci, when shortened, shortens to "Leonardo" not "Da Vinci". Artists who require a full name are the Ghirlandaios (three of them), the Pollaiuolos (two of them), the della Robbias (multi-generations of the same), the Pisani (three of them), the Lippi (father and son) and Piero della Francesca. When shortened, Piero becomes "Piero" but only after the full name is used. (as for the Daddis, the Gaddis and the Taddis..... I have to confess I find it hard to keep them sorted in my head)

The best rule in naming art files is use the minimum needed to convey full information. "Moore" could mean a variety of people, so use "Henry Moore". "Toulouse-Lautrec" only means one person so ignore the "Henri".

Re Michelangelo: Someone renamed the Wikimedia Section "Michelangelo Buonarotti". This was a bad move. The whole section needs renaming "Michelangelo" and all the file s recategorised accordingly.

Unfortunately, there is a lot of categorisation on Wikimedia Commons that doesn't work very well.

Perhaps you remember raising an editprotected request regarding a weird situation at Talk:Webserver directory index last month. In case you're curious and still care about the issue, I've explained in that thread what was going on. Nyttend (talk) 15:47, 24 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Renaming files at Infobox court case and Infobox legislation

[edit]

Hi! Just wanted to alert you to the fact that when you rename files at "Template:Infobox court case/images/doc" and "Template:Infobox legislation/images/doc", you need to rename them at "Template:Infobox court case/images" and "Template:Infobox legislation/images" too, otherwise you have only changed the documentation pages. — Cheers, JackLee talk 14:59, 19 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, this is commonsdelinker's work :D --Steinsplitter (talk) 15:55, 19 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmm, any chance CommonsDelinker can be reprogrammed to replace occurrences of files in templates where the filename does not begin with "File": or "Image:"? — Cheers, JackLee talk 17:25, 19 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know. --Steinsplitter (talk) 18:35, 19 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Right. I asked because you are listed as a "Maintainer" of CommonsDelinker. Any idea who I could ask about this? — Cheers, JackLee talk 19:15, 19 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Technically it is possible... but i am not py specialist. The source code is on SVN, feel to fix the bug. --Steinsplitter (talk) 19:28, 19 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Steinsplitter,

What are you trying to target with Special:AbuseFilter/626? Deletions by staff/stewards/etc? — xaosflux Talk 17:53, 15 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Ping to others recently updating EF626: @DerHexer:,@Peteforsyth:. — xaosflux Talk 18:02, 15 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I don't try to target anything. I simply disabled the AbuseFilter created by Pete and Steinsplitter upon request of the latter. Cheers, —DerHexer (Talk) 18:16, 15 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Der, just pinged you in case you knew what was going on :) .— xaosflux Talk 18:30, 15 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Deletions by users non in sysop group. Means: stews/staff (and other groups with delete permission). For transparency, discussed this with Pete first. It is disabled do to a bug atm. --Steinsplitter (talk) 18:41, 15 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yes -- it's a transparency measure, not intended to combat abuse literally. (It just creates a log entry.) @Steinsplitter: pointed out the similar AF entry on Commons, and offered to enable it here on enwp; it seemed like a good idea to me, but I preferred to enable Steinsplitter to do it as I am not familiar with AF configuration changes. -Pete (talk) 18:57, 15 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Formal mediation has been requested

[edit]
The Mediation Committee has received a request for formal mediation of the dispute relating to "Misleading Filename". As an editor concerned in this dispute, you are invited to participate in the mediation. Mediation is a voluntary process which resolves a dispute over article content by facilitation, consensus-building, and compromise among the involved editors. After reviewing the request page, the formal mediation policy, and the guide to formal mediation, please indicate in the "party agreement" section whether you agree to participate. Because requests must be responded to by the Mediation Committee within seven days, please respond to the request by 29 October 2014.

Discussion relating to the mediation request is welcome at the case talk page. Thank you.

Rename

[edit]

Hi Steinsplitter, "David King 947" has already been renamed 5 or 6 times since account creation (2014) [1] - I don't have a problem if one wants to change there name but changing it 5 or 6 times in the space of a year is surely disruptive ?, He was also warned by Xeno to stick to one name too [2] but has pretty much been ignored,
I have a very strong feeling his new username won't last very long at all,
Thanks and Happy editing, –Davey2010Talk 15:13, 11 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Davey2010: Sorry, I haven't noticed it :(. phabricator:T101080 works only for the rename request interface :/ --Steinsplitter (talk) 16:22, 11 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
No worries it is rather easy to look over :), Well damnit , So really nothing can be done other than to warn him to stop ? ... which would be ignored anyway .
Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 16:37, 11 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
His requests seems to be disruptive, a solution would be to block him if he continues after warnings (imho). Best :-) --Steinsplitter (talk) 17:03, 11 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Tropical Depression image

[edit]

I have reverted your edit in the 2015 Pacific typhoon season because of an image because the file I created is right. The image name is suppose to be JMA TD 16, not JMA TD 17 since so far we only have 16 tropical depressions this year within the basin. This is just to inform you. Thanks. Typhoon2013 (talk) 08:47, 19 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Typhoon2013: Reverting the link here on enwiki does not revert the file move on commons. Then this request is wrong? --Steinsplitter (talk) 09:01, 19 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Yes it is wrong sorry. Especially the image file name, as said above, suppose to be TD 16. However I do believe that this is the 17th tropical depression, but Cyclonebiskit said that it is the 16th depression so far since the 15th depression weakened to a LPA then intensified into a TD again. I know it's confusing but thr image should be JMA TD 16, just so not to confuse people. Typhoon2013 (talk) 19:10, 19 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know if you seen this and the one before this' message but I am still going to revert it back to the way it is. The file image name is going to go back to JMA TD 16. Typhoon2013 (talk) 07:47, 20 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I am not familiar with this, just fulfilled a request. Feel free to revert it on commons too. Thanks :-) --Steinsplitter (talk) 09:34, 20 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The new name is a promotional username and suggests shared use since the user is attempting to create an article about afilm produced by Nativebullet Films. See User_talk:Nativebullet#New_Username. Meters (talk) 19:08, 13 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Meters: I haven't noticed that Nativebullet is promotional (nothing popped up in google search). The user has to ask again for renaming. Best --Steinsplitter (talk) 19:22, 13 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not surprised the company didn't show up. It may not even exist as a legal entity. The film is very low budget, and starring, written, produced, directed and edited by one person. The unpaid cast and total crew of three were all friends and family. Meters (talk) 19:39, 13 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

UPDATE: Correct, the company will not show up. The company is just me, one person, Eric F. Adams. But when creating a film you must have a "company" in order for cast to sign release over too to use voice, image, etc. I am not promoting anything. Nativebullet is just a cool name and I have used it for years. It does not have an LLC. Just let me roll with this name because it gets confusing to keep switching names. Profile pics

[edit]

Hello Steinsplitter. I was going through plenty of profile pictures that have been unused and was thinking that they should be removed based on this deletion policy. Although I would have begun the deletion request, two years ago, i was blocked for nominating my own low quality junk like File:2011 Mercedes-Benz ML 300 CDI (W 164 MY11) BlueEFFICIENCY Grand Edition wagon (2014-06-01).jpg and also Wikimedia blocked OSX for nominating low quality files for deletion. Whilst I can understand these mistakes, I have never heard about nominating unused profile pictures for example, File:Ahsanullah mohsen.JPG & File:Paula Gómez.jpg as I do not believe these would be suitable examples of images of people in the profile picture. I was wondering if you were to help me out, but not proceed as I want to know as I do not want Admins to reblock me again for nominating low quality junk for deletion & knowing you're the expert, thats why I asked you. Best regards --EurovisionNim (talk to me)(see my edits) 02:43, 17 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I personally believe we shouldn't get rid of these - The first image can be cropped and then the main focus would be the pickup, The second image could be recategorised into models and similar,
This is a different issue Davey2010. This is not a car image. Wrong one mate, these are profile pictures of individuals. These people have no relevandce to the car images File:Paula Gómez.jpg for example is a self portrait of a woman holding a skateboard and posing for a camera. Whilst this category is fine, however the image is not, and should not be published according to this deletion policy. Unless you have sufficient knowledge, no needfor your 2c to be involved --EurovisionNim (talk to me)(see my edits) 10:05, 17 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Unless I've gone absolutely blind this image is of a man standing at his car door - Now like I said he can be cropped out so only the vehicle shows, The second image is a woman holding a skateboard - Again like I said this can be categorised, Neither images here are useless,
You've linked to "Not educational" which is subjective, There are plenty of images on Commons that I think are useless but ofcourse others may believe different and vice versa people have tried deleting images that I consider to be useful
"no needfor your 2c to be involved" - Better yet I'll comment as and when I please and you simply ignore my comments (my signature makes my comments easier to find or ignore which ever you prefer). –Davey2010Talk 12:33, 17 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
No idea what template it is but for images such as these a "Personality rights" template is added, Please remember Commons allows images to be used Internally (Wikimedia websites) and Externally (ie the world wide web) so whilst these may not be used internally they could be uxed externally, Also picture policies vary from project to project so whilst these won't be added to any EN article chances are they could be added to any other. –Davey2010Talk 12:37, 17 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
