Firewall?
Hi there! Can you clarify what you meant by "firewall ref" -https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Timothy_Quill&diff=prev&oldid=901944920 here]? Nikkimaria (talk) 01:03, 17 June 2019 (UTC)
- Hi, that was a typo, I meant paywall not firewall!. The reference is behind a paywall, so I removed it. Spleodrach (talk) 15:39, 17 June 2019 (UTC)
- Ah, okay. While there might be other reasons to remove that particular ref, being paywalled isn't one - see WP:PAYWALL. Nikkimaria (talk) 03:44, 18 June 2019 (UTC)
2019 Irish local elections - summary
Hi, as you appear to have an interest in Irish politics could you have a look at 2019 Irish local elections for me please. I'm dealing with an email from the Workers and Unemployed Action that the total of 1st preference votes given in the summary table is wrong. The claim is that it should be 2621 and the table has missed the votes received by Michael Cleere in Carrick –on-Suir, see 2019 Tipperary County Council election. The claim appears to be correct but I don't have the necessary understanding of Irish elections to make the edit with any degree of confidence. Thanks. Nthep (talk) 17:05, 18 June 2019 (UTC)
- Hi, yes the claim is correct and I have updated the table with the correct figure for WUA. Spleodrach (talk) 18:10, 18 June 2019 (UTC)
- thank you very much. Nthep (talk) 18:41, 18 June 2019 (UTC)

Reverting on a frequent basis
Are you perhaps reverting changes too frequently? I cannot understand your reasons for reverting my recent edits on Members of the 32nd Dáil or the Political parties template, particularly as you had made constructive edits to my newly created page Independent politicians in Ireland, which my edits were linking. You've also since allowed these edits. You reverted my merging of Minister of State (Ireland) into Ministers and Secretaries Acts on the grounds that it had not been discussed, which under WP:BOLD is not in itself necessary. I will at a later stage discuss my views on the Minister of State article and related pages, but at this stage I'll preview that discussion only to state that it falls under WP:MERGEREASON point 3, Short text. Similarly you reverted my edits to various templates on the same day, where my reasons actually expanded beyond changes relating to my merger. Overusing revert is discussed at WP:DONTREVERT, and as mentioned there, Wikipedia does not have a status quo bias. The structure of pages and projects may and do differ quite substantially over time. I commend you for your work on Irish politics pages here, particularly keeping external links up to date. I don't edit as much as you do, but out of courtesy, would a note on my talk page not be preferable to reverting. I may not see it immediately, but even if edits I make that you disagree with are up for a few days, they can be changed back then, and no significant harm has been done. --Iveagh Gardens (talk) 15:03, 15 July 2019 (UTC)
- No. I take it your feelings have been hurt because I've reverted some of your changes, that's too bad! Don't take it personally. Spleodrach (talk) 18:18, 15 July 2019 (UTC)
- No feelings hurt, but it is somewhat irritating! Given your recent edits, I understand better your reasons with the Minister of State page. I still don't get why you reversed links to the new Independents page. Howinever, as you've left them stand now, there's probably not much more to say on this! –Iveagh Gardens (talk) 08:56, 20 July 2019 (UTC)
- Would you mind contributing to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:List_of_political_parties_in_the_Republic_of_Ireland and helping create a consensus on which political parties belong on this page? I don't feel strongly about the particular issue of your reverting Independent Left but I don't want to waste my time adding new parties if they are not warranted and I'm sure other editors would value clarity on this point. Congratulations on your tireless work in the Irish political arena on Wikipedia.
Reference your recent changes to the birth name of Gerry L'Estrange the use of Gerald on the Oireachtas Members Database is incorrect. - Thanks for the amendment. I am used to the multiplicity of name spelling variations in pre-computer Irish records but three in one name is above average. Courthouses
Hi - Many thanks for your edits on the Irish courthouses. I was intrigued as to why you were moving the Irish version of the name out of "native name" and into the "name" section. I appreciate that the Irish name needs to be given equal prominence in the real world in Ireland. But this is English wikipedia and Irish is the native language in Ireland. Take a look at Leinster House for example. Views welcome. Best wishes. Dormskirk (talk) 20:03, 7 November 2019 (UTC)
- Hi @Dormskirk:, yes to give the Irish name equal prominence, and also to get rid of the unsightly Native name label that appears, see Petra or Suomenlinna. This label does not appear in 'Infobox building' only 'Infobox historic site'. If you do not agree, then feel free to revert my changes. Also, thanks for your work on Irish courthouses and county halls. Spleodrach (talk) 20:31, 8 November 2019 (UTC)

ArbCom 2019 election voter message
Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks!
Hello,
Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at the English Wikipedia.
I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!
From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.
If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.
Thank you!

Image in Government of the 6th Dáil
Why have you moved this image to the very end, even after the navigation boxes? When it was first added, it was placed towards the top of the page, near the place for 4th Exec Council. I have no attachment to the image per se, except to the extent that in adding material to the various government pages over the last while, I endeavoured to keep existing material. It was only early this year that you moved the image to the very end. It just looks really out of place there at the very end, and I can't think of other pages that have such images placed just there. It's so trivial that I don't want an edit war over it, but while I am adding to these pages, it seems a very strange place to have it. The guide on navigation templates indicates that they should be at the very bottom of articles. —Iveagh Gardens (talk) 23:49, 17 March 2020 (UTC)
- It should be at the end because it is a large image and best belongs there. It does not have to be near the 4th Exec Council, as membership of the 4th and 5th were the same. FTLOM, I can't believe you have started an edit war over this, and are leaving messages for me about it. Anyway in the interests of compromise, I have moved it to the middle, so I hope you stop your tiresome and trivial edit war now. Spleodrach (talk) 21:19, 18 March 2020 (UTC)
- Grand, happy to put this to rest! I just haven't seen this done for images of any size elsewhere on the project, and it looked odd. My moves were efforts to find a good place for it, amidst the other text (my last attempt was to have it at the end, near the See Also section), rather than simply edit warring, but I understand it seemed frustrating on your end. —Iveagh Gardens (talk) 08:03, 19 March 2020 (UTC)
Ireland's name in 1926.
Hugh Conaghan was born in Ireland when it was the Irish Free State. It is a common practice to indicate what the country's name was at the time someone was born. Anyone born between 31 May 1910 and 30 May 1961 in South Africa was born in what was then the Union of South Africa. - (124.197.55.28 (talk) 09:02, 26 March 2020 (UTC))

Irish language audio files
Hi, I added a few Irish language audio files but you kept taking them down without any reason stated. I'm not sure about the quality of the audio but the speakers demonstrate very good native accent in Irish as they are native speakers so I am confused. https://www.irishtimes.com/news/councillor-gets-9-000-from-fai-for-lime-burns-1.1010313 this is the source used concerning Larkin's football injuries. They have been fixed to what is actually on the source. Also, no proof for claim he was against Mary McAleese running for a second term. Year of birth was wrong, Larkin was born in 1970. However, as C.Fred has pointed out, there seems to be conflicting sources so we will leave it at c. 1970. Larkin died one month before his 49th birthday and the some media outlets made an error. Ireland's constitutional status between 1937 and 1949 - a Dominion, NOT a republic.
This 1999 RTE documentary attempts to clarify Ireland's constitutional status between 1937 and 1949;
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c-asFWpX0nE
Therefore, Ireland was a Dominion, NOT a republic, as King George VI was the internationally recognised Irish head of state as King of Ireland.
Douglas Hyde and Sean T. O'Kelly had NO recognition at all outside Ireland, given the fact that the Presidency was then merely a local replacement for the Governor-General of the Irish Free State.
Therefore, a new Irish state was created under the 1937 Constitution of Ireland. - (124.197.55.28 (talk) 01:35, 1 June 2020 (UTC))
- So so wrong! Ireland had the status of Dominion until 1937 when a new constitution was adopted, in which the state was named "Ireland" and effectively became a republic, with an elected non-executive president as head of state. It was officially declared a republic in 1949, following the Republic of Ireland Act 1948. Diplomats were accredited to the king, but the president exercised all internal functions of a head of state. For instance, the President gave assent to new laws with his own authority, without reference to King George VI who was only an "organ", that was provided for by statute law. Spleodrach (talk) 06:54, 2 June 2020 (UTC)
Only Dominions could be members of the British Commonwealth until 1949, when the London Declaration was adopted to allow republics and independent native monarchies to become Commonwealth members.
Between 29 December 1937 and 17 April 1949, Ireland was a Dominion with King George VI as Ireland's head of state (King of Ireland) - as his title in Ireland was the same as everywhere else in the British Commonwealth.
Presidents Hyde & O'Kelly had NO international recognition at all - in effect, serving as local replacements for the Governor-General of the Irish Free State.
If a foreign country's Ambassador was to be accredited for service in Ireland between 1937 and 1949, their credentials documents had to be signed off by their government, then accepted by King George VI in London, before they could proceed to their posting in Dublin.
It was the External Relations Act itself that gave the foreign relations power to the King, not to the Presidents.
Ireland was therefore a member of the British Commonwealth - and it was also a Dominion, even after the 1922 Constitution was replaced by the 1937 Constitution.
Ireland's banknotes and coins dated from 1938 to 1948 are therefore issues of the Dominion of Ireland (1937-49) - and part of the British Commonwealth series, along with Postal orders of Ireland that was issued from 1938 until a few days before 18 April 1949 (Easter Monday). - (124.197.55.28 (talk) 09:59, 8 June 2020 (UTC))

Those article will never be created, if on the off chance that they are created, then add back in. Btw, your ownership issues are off the scale! Spleodrach (talk) 20:09, 27 July 2020 (UTC)
- LOL, your funny but completely wrong. What you did is plain vandalism, as red links are an invitation to create articles. Probably you do not want that. The Banner talk 21:01, 27 July 2020 (UTC)
- STOP accusing me of vandalism, totally wrong and very inaccurate. Your idea of vandalism seems to be, when someone makes edits that you don't like, to an article that you own. Also, it's quite bizarre to suggest that I would NOT want articles to be created on the wiki? Just saying, if you come back in 5 years time, no one, including you, will have created those articles. Good work picking up on adding live links for council co-options. Something I'd been intending to continue, if in a very piecemeal way, then noticed you'd kept going with them! Spire nicknames
Hey, I'm not sure by what bar you are setting the nicknames to be "none in common usage". In particular the ones in Griffith's book are pretty solidly represented when you do a Google search for them. The concept of Dubliners giving nicknames to their public art is well documented, and the well known ones are all mentioned in their respective articles (the floozi in the jacuzzi, the tart with the cart, the hags with the bags etc). Why is the Spire immune? Smirkybec (talk) 10:12, 25 October 2020 (UTC)

- Thanks, please improve as you see fit. For example, the table is not sortable, as I wanted to get it done first before tackling it; also it's difficult to do! Spleodrach (talk) 08:00, 26 October 2020 (UTC)
- Sorting is a difficult one in a table like this, because of the range of different responsibilities, which change much more for juniors than even the formalised way they do for cabinet ministers. I have time now for just piecemeal changes, but this is one I'll keep an eye on and in the watchlist for useful piecemeal edits. —Iveagh Gardens (talk) 18:49, 26 October 2020 (UTC)
Mary Robinson presidential image
I disagree with your edit. My opinion is that it's far better to use a more contemporaneous photo than one 20 year later, even if it's better quality, when her look is completely different. Except for Douglas Hyde the other are pretty contemporaneous. ww2censor (talk) 11:55, 1 November 2020 (UTC)
- @Ww2censor: and I disagree with your opinion. It's a poor quality image, which is my main objection to it. But if you insist on putting in this poor image, then go ahead, I won't change it again. Spleodrach (talk) 13:37, 1 November 2020 (UTC)

Sean O'Dwyer (artist)
Hi. This article was nominated for deletion on 30 October. As I was a frequent editor of the page I was invited to respond. This I did on 2 November. Given that I requested more time to address the issues raised, I was surprised to find the article deleted this morning. It is my first experience of this process. Is it always this quick? Jim Bruce (talk) 10:10, 16 November 2020 (UTC)
- That was two weeks then, which is about average. If you feel strongly then you can request the article to be un-deleted. Spleodrach (talk) 23:09, 16 November 2020 (UTC)

Ministers of State pages
Hi @Spleodrach: Great to come onto Wikipedia and find you've done the page for Minister of State at the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment, the very next one I was planning to do! It's good to be able to collaborate on this reformatting. It's a more legally precise way of listing them; even if there will be discontinuities, e.g., Trade Promotion moving between DFA and DETE, at least we're doing it in line with the official changes of responsibilities, rather than trying to formulate our own throughlines. And it means for each department, we can have a page for the department with general descriptions of current functions and responsible bodies and the table of transfers, a page for the government minister, and a page for the ministers of state. For disestablished departments like Labour or P&T, I'd imagined including the MoS list on that page, neither being that long, and they're now a closed set, so the pages won't get that long either.
One small idea, that came to me through the process, that in the relevant Government pages, the link to Minister of State at the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment should be in the column for department, rather than responsibilities. This is from a MOS:LINKCLARITY perspective, and frees up the responsibilities column to link to either specific responsibilities that would still get their own pages (e.g. European Affairs, Children, Disability) or to a body like the OPW or EPA. It also means that where there are separate departments but one responsibility (again, e.g. Children pre-2011), each list of Ministers of State page would be linked in the Departments column (so as Education, Health, Justice). Open to suggestions and variations on this. —Iveagh Gardens (talk) 13:35, 28 December 2020 (UTC)
- Hi @Iveagh Gardens:, I saw what you were doing on Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine and thought it was a very good idea, better than the ad-hoc system that was there, so I decided to pich in. Yes, I agree with you about the link, that's worth doing. Spleodrach (talk) 15:36, 28 December 2020 (UTC)

Frank Feighan Wiki
This page, as it was, is rather damaging and biased against the person involved and or his political party due to the selective nature of topics mentioned in the political career chapter and how they were presented.
Why you would suggest that edits about the results of his elections and the preference votes he obtained, his new office location and the fact that he has been elected in two different constituencies is biased and unrelated information is quite interesting to say the least.
However, the main points in the original piece, whilst in my view clearly biased against the person, have been left unedited and only additional information about these two selected topics has been provided in order to provide a reader with greater clarity on the issues originally included. They were included to provide a reader with additional information on the two points raised to let the reader make up their own minds. Is that not fair instead of just reading what you believe to be allowable? The additional information provided are facts and have been referenced from many different Irish news articles that were included. Why would they be removed?
As the edits have been twice removed, it is clear in my opinion that there may be another agenda going on here. As a result, I am using this mechanism in the first instance to resolved the situation.
I am requesting that these edits that have been made be returned. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.19.140.22 (talk) 19:14, 4 January 2021 (UTC)

I gave the user two warnings
I have already gave the user:Cupper52 two warnings regarding his actions while dealing with AFD. The user is not following proper WP:Before and is not checking the resources and all. He is simply nominating random articles for deletion within 1 or 2 minutes. I think he is trying to obtain autopatrolled or any other rights, so he need to participate in AFD's and all. Is there any way we can stop this behaviour from the user Kichu🐘 Discuss 16:47, 16 January 2021 (UTC)
- Hi @Kashmorwiki:, if user:Cupper52 behaviour does not change, then he should be reported to the Administrators' noticeboard. Spleodrach (talk) 16:51, 16 January 2021 (UTC)
Yes, because he is just taking 1 or 2 minutes from his last edits for nominating the articles. He nominated 2 articles I created that were covered in more than enougj depth. And the reason he pointed out was not notable. This type of users must be stopped. Thankyou Kichu🐘 Discuss 16:54, 16 January 2021 (UTC)
Francis Cahill removal of Gaelic name
Hi just wondering why the Irish version of Francis Cahill‘s name is being reverted(I think on two occasions) When looking at the pages of his peers noted in the article all have their Irish name in brackets. Francis was also a major proponent of Irish culture, language and identity so would be appropriate for his Gaelic name to appear also. Dail voting records quite often show his name in Irish too so looks to have been commonly used amongst native speakers and records, thanks Twilki Ire (talk) 23:53, 11 February 2021 (UTC)

The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Museum of Literature Ireland. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Museum of Literature Ireland), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. An Rabharta Glas - Green Left
Hi there,
I saw that you removed An Rabharta Glas - Green Left from the list of 'Parties represented on local authorities', your logic being that they can't be there as they are unregistered. By your logic, Independent Left, which has one Councillor on Dublin City Council (Cllr. John Loyns, Artane/Whitehall), should also be removed.
In the name of consistency, I'd ask that you add the section on An Rabharta Glas - Green Left back. EvanPereiraIreland (talk) 10:31, 8 June 2021 (UTC)

Edit warring at Department of Defence (Ireland)
Your recent editing history at Department of Defence (Ireland) shows that you are currently engaged in an edit war; that means that you are repeatedly changing content back to how you think it should be, when you have seen that other editors disagree. To resolve the content dispute, please do not revert or change the edits of others when you are reverted. Instead of reverting, please use the talk page to work toward making a version that represents consensus among editors. The best practice at this stage is to discuss, not edit-war. See the bold, revert, discuss cycle for how this is done. If discussions reach an impasse, you can then post a request for help at a relevant noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases, you may wish to request temporary page protection.
Being involved in an edit war can result in you being blocked from editing—especially if you violate the three-revert rule, which states that an editor must not perform more than three reverts on a single page within a 24-hour period. Undoing another editor's work—whether in whole or in part, whether involving the same or different material each time—counts as a revert. Also keep in mind that while violating the three-revert rule often leads to a block, you can still be blocked for edit warring—even if you do not violate the three-revert rule—should your behavior indicate that you intend to continue reverting repeatedly. --jpgordon𝄢𝄆𝄐𝄇 03:14, 10 June 2021 (UTC)

Frank Carney
Hello, There is inaccurate, unresearched, information on the page for Frank Carney that I keep changing and someone keeps reverting. Apart from the general lack of information that is continuously reverted to, it keeps saying that he fought in the 1914-18 war, which he did not, and that he fought in the Irish Civil War, which he did not. Frank Carney was a founder member of a neutrality group which canvassed members of the I.R.A. to oppose the Civil War. See Derry Journal 12th Jan 1923 for advertisment placed by Frank Carney to canvass for members, and Derry Journal Feb 7 1923 where it reports on the convention held oppose the Civil War and sue for peace. Frank Carney's name is on both of these. I will attempt to upload pics of these entries here. Frank Carney joined the Inniskillings on 19 Aug 1914: Signed up for 3 years service with the Inniskillings 5 foot 5 inches 110 pounds under 8 stone Eyes Grey Hair Dark Posted 5th Inniskillings 19.8.14 Private Promoted 5th Inniskillings 21. 9. 14 Lance Corporal Promoted 5th Inniskillings 13.10.14 Corporal Promoted 5th Inniskillings 14.12.14 Sergeant Posted 4th Inniskillings 24.6.15 in CLONMANY He had repeated bouts on illness during this time, and never left Ireland - he did not fight in World War 1. On Dec 2nd 1915 he was 'Discharged – 1 year 107 days. No longer physically fit for War service.' I have all his military records. Now I have also all the references from the Bureau of Military Intelligence to tell you everything we know about him in the War of Independence, but there is no point in me putting accurate information with correct references if you continously take it down and put up fantasies. Regards, Kate Tammemagi

- Hi @Billsmith60:, yes Wikipedia policy is to use full name at the start of the article and the nickname as article title and at the top of the infobox, see Bill Clinton, Jimmy Carter and Tony Blair for examples. See Wikipedia:Article titles and MOS:NICKNAME. Convention is to use: William Henry Gates III and avoid: William Henry "Bill" Gates III. Spleodrach (talk) 08:09, 30 September 2021 (UTC)

Regarding this, have you read the entire article, WP:LEADCITE and WP:WIAGA? My copy of The Encyclopedia of Dublin (Douglas Bennett, Gill & Macmillan 2005) p. 224 lists the street as "Sackville Street (O'Connell Street)". I am concerned your other edits are promoting a pro - Unionist point of view. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 11:16, 2 December 2021 (UTC)
- @Ritchie333: Please remain WP:CIVIL and stop the personal attacks, that is quite unnecessary. I don't know what a pro - Unionist point of view is in this context but kindly stop the name calling. I don't see any evidence that Sackville Street was also known as Sráid Saicfil. That book you mention is not online, so I can't verify this. Asking for a citation is a reasonable request. Spleodrach (talk) 11:27, 2 December 2021 (UTC)
- I've given you a citation in the above thread; also per the Manual of style for lead sections, "Because the lead will usually repeat information that is in the body, editors should balance the desire to avoid redundant citations in the lead with the desire to aid readers in locating sources for challengeable material." And so it is in this case, in the body of the article we find "He titled the new development Sackville Street after the then Lord Lieutenant of Ireland Lionel Cranfield Sackville, Duke of Dorset." cited to A Short History of Dublin: Dublin From the Vikings to the Modern Era. (Richard Keen, Gill & Macmillan, 2010). Indeed, the best quality sources to use are often in print. However, that you can't personally see two sources that adequately verify the claim is unfortunate, but the verifiability policy says "Do not reject reliable sources just because they are difficult or costly to access. Some reliable sources may not be easily accessible. For example, an online source may require payment, and a print-only source may be available only through libraries.". Nothing I have said is a personal attack; this is one if it would help you see the difference. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 11:33, 2 December 2021 (UTC)
- @Ritchie333: I know it was called Sackville Street, I'm disputing it was ever officially known in Irish as Sráid Saicfil. This appears to be a made up translation. It was added by User:EverType in August 2019 without a reference. [4] Spleodrach (talk) 11:37, 2 December 2021 (UTC)
