Welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, your addition of one or more external links to the page The Sacred Idol has been reverted.
Your edit here to The Sacred Idol was reverted by an automated bot that attempts to remove links in references which are discouraged per our reliable sources guideline. The reference(s) you added or changed (https://www.discogs.com/Les-Baxter-The-Fruit-Of-Dreams/release/615725) is/are on my list of links to remove and probably shouldn't be included in Wikipedia.
If you were trying to insert an external link that does comply with our policies and guidelines, then please accept my creator's apologies and feel free to undo the bot's revert. However, if the link does not comply with our policies and guidelines, but your edit included other, constructive, changes to the article, feel free to make those changes again without re-adding the link. Please read Wikipedia's external links guideline for more information, and consult my list of frequently-reverted sites. For more information about me, see my FAQ page. Proper way to add genres

Musical genres

[edit]

Please watch your conflation of descriptive words such as "minimal" with specific musical genres such as Minimal music. The media can describe a piece of music as "rocking" without it being rock music, and they can describe a song as "experimental" without it being the musical genre experimental music. They might say some music is "hard" without meaning it is hard rock. The English words are too flexible for you to connect them straight from a description to a musical genre. You have to know what the genre is about before you list it in the infobox. Binksternet (talk) 04:25, 4 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Just came here to basically say the same thing. Referring to Smells Like Teen Spirit as "pop-punk" because someone, somewhere used both of the words pop and punk to describe the song was particularly egregious. In general, I think it is safe to say that adding genres to a music article that has been on Wikipedia for many years is almost always going to make WP worse. If a genre is valid, someone has almost certainly already added it. If you are adding an additional genre because you found some recent description of a 40-year old song as maybe, possibly being in a not-yet-listed genre, it's almost certainly an outlier description and contrary to a long-established critical consensus. CAVincent (talk) 06:38, 16 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
[edit]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Hung Up, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Electro. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

It's OK to remove this message. Also, to stop receiving these messages, follow these opt-out instructions. Thanks, DPL bot (talk) 06:31, 6 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

June 2023

[edit]

Warning icon Please stop. If you continue to change genres without discussion or sources, as you did at Hello, Dolly! (song), you may be blocked from editing. Make certain that the source is talking about the song genre, not the artist genre. Binksternet (talk) 07:45, 11 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, thanks for the message. I am getting quite loose with my interpretation of the genre of a song. I am grateful you issued a warning and didn't block me from editing outright. Editing Wikipedia is just fun to me, for some reason. I know we have had some run-ins in the past few months with my editing but I promise to step up my game and only add a genre (from a reliable source!) if the article explicitly defines it as such. Hi, can you provide a quote from the book you referenced for this song being power pop? It seems odd that a general music book would mention such an obscure song, let alone with an inappropriate genre. Thanks, Bretonbanquet (talk) 11:37, 22 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I have added the quote. Spiceislandseabird (talk) 13:10, 22 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Seems bizarre. This is the problem when genres with one source get added. If you found another one for power pop, I'd be stunned. You could probably find several single-reference genres for that song (heavy metal, certainly), which highlights the problems with adding genres. Bretonbanquet (talk) 14:20, 22 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I wasn't really suggesting you take it off - you certainly hadn't done anything wrong. I was questioning the opinion of the author really. You can restore it if you'd like. Bretonbanquet (talk) 14:53, 22 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
