NOTICE: Regarding my Wikipedia status

At this time, after a FAC, I am extremely aggravated at Wikipedia. I now understand and agree with its critics. I currently do not plan on returning to Wikipedia. However, I will return in a few weeks to revaluate my situation. It does not appear that I will return. Thank you to all of those on this horrible, not-so-tranparent website that have made it a little better. Do not take any action based on these messages yet, as I will revaluate the situation in a few weeks. It does not appear that there is much hope for my return, though. Southern Illinois SKYWARN (talk) 02:20, 6 May 2008 (UTC)

It has been mentionned in the Wikiproject Severe Weather talk page but here is a link to the discussion.--JForget 01:06, 21 August 2007 (UTC)

Try and do a proper message to me before accusing me of acting improperly. For example, using --~~~~ to sign at the end of the message. Hard enough I had to go into the history to message you. And don't threaten me with acting improperly when I don't see the reversion done by you. --293.xx.xxx.xx 13:22, 21 September 2007 (UTC)

USRD Inactivity check and news report

Hello, Southern Illinois SKYWARN. We had a few urgent matters to communicate to you:

  1. Please update your information at Wikipedia:WikiProject U.S. Roads/Participants, our new centralized participant list. Those who have not done so by October 20th will be removed.
  2. There are important discussions taking place at WT:USRD relating to whether WP:USRD, WP:HWY, or the state projects should hold the "power" in the roads projects.

Regards, Rschen7754 (T C) 23:36, 22 September 2007 (UTC)

Re:Noticed your request

Hey, that would be awesome if you can get any pictures of any communities that you live near for Illinois. My only suggestion is that you upload them to the Commons, so that way later on they won't need to be moved. If you would be so kind, let me know when you have them put into articles here on the Wikipedia, so I may tag them with the project tags and categories. Thanks for anything you can do!--Kranar drogin 20:52, 16 October 2007 (UTC)

That is ok. One thing I have been doing lately, is putting the geobox template in the cities, villages, and towns near me. Click on any of the cities, towns, villages in Template:Stephenson County, Illinois to see what I have been doing. If you could do this for your county or even some of the area counties, that would be great also. If you can't, no worries either! Let me know if you have any questions.--Kranar drogin 16:59, 21 October 2007 (UTC)
Ok, I have fixed up the template for you. You forgot the county seat, and forgot to put those thingys at the end of each name except for the last one which just gets the two }}. I did Henderson County, Kentucky.--Kranar drogin 18:04, 21 October 2007 (UTC)
Great to hear! I am heading out to take some pictures of some round barns near me that aren't on the NRHP, and I might nominated. You can see one here Cox Round Barn.--Kranar drogin 18:36, 21 October 2007 (UTC)

I have updated both the articles on Allendale, Illinois and Lawrenceville, Illinois. All images have been tagged, geobox2 has been added to both articles. Any questions, let me know. Two requests. I need the township/Precinct added for each place, and the area code. I still have to finish off stubbing off the precincts, but should be able to do that down the road. Thanks much!--Kranar drogin 02:15, 22 October 2007 (UTC)

Also, check this list out on the List of Registered Historic Places in Illinois. If any of these counties and cities/villages are near you, we need pics of them all. I can help get you addresses if you need that. Let me know.--Kranar drogin 03:03, 22 October 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for removing the inappropriate link from Paducah, Kentucky. I tried to revert it, but I don't think I went back far enough. Re:WP:NTROP newsletter

Mah, not at all. Afterall, you are an editor for it. Anyway, I was waiting to see if we could get more editors on it, before I actually started it. You are welcome to help with it. Juliancolton (talk) 02:52, 23 January 2008 (UTC)

Hi. If you don't mind, could you add your nomination for the featured member for the WP:NTROP newsletter? There is a link at the newlsetter HQ. Thanks. Juliancolton (talk) 15:10, 2 February 2008 (UTC)

Re:WP:SEVERE newsletter

Of course, I would be happy to help. Juliancolton (talk) 12:14, 23 January 2008 (UTC)

I signed up to be an editor at your newsletter, although, I suggest we keep the current issue in the making seperate from the format newsletter article, so we should start the first issue of it at Wikipedia:WikiProject Severe weather/Newsletter/February 2008. Juliancolton (talk) 01:58, 24 January 2008 (UTC)
We need a featured member. Other than that, it is a good first issue. Juliancolton (talk) 01:01, 31 January 2008 (UTC)
Sounds good. Juliancolton (talk) 02:52, 31 January 2008 (UTC)
I think it looks pretty good. The only thing is I think you should put the link to the recipients list so people will know how to recieve the newsletter. Juliancolton (talk) 13:52, 31 January 2008 (UTC)
It looks great! Especially for the first newsletter of the project. Good work! Juliancolton Talk 14:31, 10 February 2008 (UTC)

Enigma Outbreak

Thanks for the message. I've been doing a lot of research locally - I have Grazulis' book, and several university libraries in my area. I've found copies of wire articles published that describe many of the storms in widely varying levels of detail. I still need to do some cleanup and sourcing with the article.

The foundation article ran in the NY Times, two days later, and it did a state-by-state accounting, though telegraph communications in some areas were disrupted, so the articles were very detailed in their coverage of some states (AL, GA, SC and the floods along the OH River), and very limited in others. Midwestern papers (perhaps due to greater familiarity with tornado outbreaks) had good coverage as well. Most of the detail in NC came from two small-town papers, in Wadesboro and Statesville, NC. An individual living near Wadesboro undertook a very detailed survey of the three large storms which passed through that area - travelling the path of the strongest storm (and recording damage details and some survivor stories), and drafting a house-to-house inventory of effects along the path of the others. This gentleman also summarized effects elsewhere in NC.

Grazulis' book and a road atlas provided F? ratings, when available and/or applicable, and were of help in pinpointing counties, towns and distances. Grazulis was also the source for some details, though I would not like for this to be the lone source, and am still working to develop as many other sources as possible. The basic article, and specific storm details were first pulled from the aforementioned newspaper sources. Chart entries with multiple referenced sources are the ones I consider complete; the others I am still working to beef up. Some, but not all, of those sources are available online, and I'll get those links up as soon as I can. The emergency management offices in VA and AL have a complete inventory of significant tornadoes in those states, and the AL listing includes path maps. The journal of the American Meteorological Society also was a source - primarily of value in pinpointing locations and times (their severe weather reports usually did not offer descriptions of effects, but did list times and locations).

Thanks for reading through, and any suggestions or pointers would be welcome. I've been working - within the 'tornado projects' - to try to research older outbreaks, and significant outbreaks striking unusual parts of the country (SE, Mid-Atlantic and NE, specifically). I've done a good bit of reading and digging around for info that covers the Midwest, Plains and Miss. Valley as well, so let me know if I can help in any projects you might be undertaking.

Thanks again- Davidals (talk) 23:11, 11 February 2008 (UTC)

Re. Feb. 16, 2008 tornado Outbreak

This is going on RIGHT NOW! So far, there has been tornadoes and servere storms seen in the Texas area. It has only begun. Check www.weather.com for more. I've been monitoring this on a Self Powered Radio for quite some time. One T-storm nearly got me. I'm in the affected area. 65.163.115.203 (talk) 01:38, 17 February 2008 (UTC)

The radio I have has the Weatherband on it. You should purchase one. Got mine at Radio Shack Ask for their "Hand Cranked Radios". 65.163.115.203 (talk) 01:43, 17 February 2008 (UTC)
Note: I have no idea what this person is talking about, I am guessing they have me confused with someone else. Southern Illinois SKYWARN (talk) 01:57, 17 February 2008 (UTC)
That person is referring to a dangerous weather situation in which Thunderstorms were dropping tornadoes all over the place, and a "Self Powered Radio" is a radio that has some kind of generator in it, and/or a solar panel that charges a internal battery which operates the radio, thus this kind is a good one to have in the event that batteries become unavailable, such as what happens in areas affected by incomming hurricanes in which batteries are sold out and no further orders are possible due to the storms. 65.163.115.237 (talk) 02:48, 18 February 2008 (UTC)

Marion, Illinois tornado outbreak

I saw your request for advice for how to improve this. I did a general copyedit of it (feel free to change anything you really don't like). A couple general things (I actually had this backwards the first time around), per the MOS, times should be lowercase, so pm or p.m. rather than P.M. I did some more wikilinking, especially of the weather terms. As a general rule, spell out numbers when they're under 10 I think, so say "nine people" rather than "9 people". As far as anything else, the only thing major I can think of is to include metric values in as well whenever possible. This can be easily done by using the convert template. {{convert|75|F|C|0}}. The 75 is the temp, and the 0 at the end is how many decimal places to make the converted value. Oh, and if you want, you can improve the references by converting them to the Citation templates. Those can be a little confusing if you've never used them so let me know if you have any questions about them. That's about it though, good job on it! Gopher backer (talk) 05:36, 27 February 2008 (UTC)

One more thing. You can go ahead and upload any of the photos on this page (especially the tornado photos!). http://www.crh.noaa.gov/pah/1982/photos.php. Even thought they were taken by someone not in the NWS, buried in the NOAA web pages is this disclaimer: The information on government servers are in the public domain, unless specifically annotated otherwise, and may be used freely by the public so long as you do not 1) claim it is your own (e.g. by claiming copyright for NWS information -- see below), 2) use it in a manner that implies an endorsement or affiliation with NOAA/NWS, or 3) modify it in content and then present it as official government material. You also cannot present information of your own in a way that makes it appear to be official government information.. Basically this means that anything that gets put on an NOAA web page is automatically in the public domain, unless it says otherwise. (Here is an example of otherwise, look at the 4th photo down.) When I found this out, I couldn't believe it so I even asked an admin and he gave me the thumbs up! User talk:Elkman/Archive8#Image_review

Gopher backer (talk) 05:52, 27 February 2008 (UTC)

I have nominated Image:Mariontor1.jpg for deletion at Commons because it is not an original work of the US government and therefore not public domain. You can participate in the discussion there if you disagree. Cheers. -Nard 21:41, 1 March 2008 (UTC)

Comments have been left on the talk page of the article. The reference problem, as well as some wording and grammar issues, have been resolved. How do you propose expanding the content of the article with a topic that is fairly narrow? I'm at a loss. Thegreatdr (talk) 16:03, 8 March 2008 (UTC)

Yes, I did see that you nominated those for speedy deletion, which I was going to do sooner or later. Would you mind working on the Significant Storms section, and adding a special section for the blizzard? Juliancolton The storm still blows... 16:54, 9 March 2008 (UTC)
Where I live in eastern New York it was just rain, and a lot of it, as you can see here. I'll get started thinking about a featured story, although I think it might be a good idea to have this issue's featured story focusing on the intensity of March storms, and as shown by the blizzard, can be very dangerous due to the sharp temperature contrast. Juliancolton The storm still blows... 16:58, 9 March 2008 (UTC)
Ok, sounds good. Juliancolton The storm still blows... 17:03, 9 March 2008 (UTC)

I believe I'm the "admin" (actually, I'm not, and I'm not sure why you think I am) you're talking about here. I'm sorry you viewed my earnest attempts to convince you that you were misguided, which I stated as politely as possible, as "incivil", but that's all they are: no need to take them personally. Please see my continuation of our discussion on my talk page. Kurt Weber (Go Colts!) 04:00, 10 March 2008 (UTC)

It's ok, we all need a break sometimes. :) Yea, I've been trying to think of ideas for the newsletter, but it's actually been pretty boring other than the blizzard. I'm glad to see that your back, and your wikimood has improved slightly. Juliancolton (St. Patrick's day) 18:21, 14 March 2008 (UTC)

The article 2008 Super Tuesday tornado outbreak you nominated as a good article has been placed on hold. It hasn't failed because it's basically a good article, but there are some minor changes or clarifications needed to be addressed. If these are fixed within seven days, the article will pass, otherwise it will fail. See Talk:2008 Super Tuesday tornado outbreak for things needed to be addressed. "Unreferenced"?

I clearly stated that the figures were from Census 2000. Sure, I could have linked them by typing http://factfinder.census.gov/servlet/DTTable?_bm=y&-context=dt&-ds_name=DEC_2000_SF3_U&-CONTEXT=dt&-mt_name=DEC_2000_SF3_U_PCT016&-tree_id=, but I figured it would be enough to mention Census 2000, where anybody can find them. At the very least you could have had the courtesy of asking me more precisely about the origin of those figures and I would have told you. As a general rule, when you're not dealing with an obvious case of vandalism, it's (to put it politely) not recommended to delete the work of other people without consulting them. Mount Carmel image

It seems that with Template:Geobox Settlement you don't need to put px (pixel abbreviation) beside the size. I've first tried by leaving the image size line blanked, which gives the image a default size of 256 pixels and it worked. Trying to restore the initial size of 175 pixels without the abbreviation and it worked. With the tornado outbreak infobox, there was usually no image size line and it was not oversize like it was in the current case, seems it is probably also a default size of 256 pixels. Thanks for the message.--JForget 17:41, 25 March 2008 (UTC)

+ Thanks, that's pretty much the party line I got last night (and negativity isn't really an issue considering the field that my company is in) I will continue to look for news stories referencing our company online, and in our archives. It is difficult however, because most of our media coverage has been heavily reliant on a media kit sent out by our former pr person. However, I believe that BCC can be used reliably as a source of the subject of our report fields. (If I'm wrong in this thinking just let me know.)Thanks for being patient with me in this process, as I'm slowly finding my way in the dark. Stuartfost (talk) 13:56, 27 March 2008 (UTC)

+I've added quite a few new sources, and I just wanted to check here to see if any of them were any good. The best source I found I've included here, but it doesn't contain much information other then some analysts last year started their own firm http://www.pcimag.com/Articles/Mergers_and_Acquisitions/BNP_GUID_9-5-2006_A_10000000000000055761 If any of the other ones are good, or bad please give me some feed back. +Hmmm, did you check out the other new sources I provided? Some of those did meet the specifications you talked about on my talk page. Stuartfost (talk) 16:24, 27 March 2008 (UTC)

+Sorry I misspoke the references can be found under the external links. I actually don't know how to format them into references just yet. Bear with me... Stuartfost (talk) 16:39, 27 March 2008 (UTC)

+My formatting is still atrocious, but I think you get the general idea of the range of references now. Is the article slowly improving at least? Stuartfost (talk) 17:01, 27 March 2008 (UTC)

+Updated the site, with your specifications in mind/in place. Hopefully, their are enough sources to merit notability. As well as slightly better formatting. Hope it looks better...thanks for the help!! Stuartfost (talk) 17:16, 27 March 2008 (UTC)

+I've updated once again, the directions and insight you have been giving me has been fantastic. If their is any rep that I can pass on to you tell me how and I will. Thanks, and it slowly but surely is getting better (and starting to look like a real article) Stuartfost (talk) 17:33, 27 March 2008 (UTC)

New

+I added a lot of new material. However, most of this is still heavily biased towards BCC, could you direct me towards a writer who could help me pare down the language so it remains neutral? Thanks Stuartfost (talk) 18:07, 27 March 2008 (UTC)

False tornadoes

Yes, I decided to remove them since it has been nearly 2 weeks and no reports on them - it is quite possible they were just funnel clouds or straight-line wind damage (or false reports). Generally they get removed about 10-20 days after an outbreak, with larger outbreaks having longer times of unconfirmed tornadoes remaining in the chart. (Sometimes the difference can be a bit longer in a situation of two or more outbreaks in rapid fire but separated enough - either by time or distance - to warrant a combined article; since it is almost April that is always possible in the spring - the only recent spring without an article-worthy outbreak is 2005.) I think I solved the reference issue you brought up during GAC. Thegreatdr (talk) 23:03, 27 March 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the review. I don't think there was one reference in that article when I began editing it a few weeks ago. Thegreatdr (talk) 23:20, 27 March 2008 (UTC)

Surface weather observation

Today is the last day I can edit this article before April 5, and chances are that I've done most of the edits I can do today. If there are lingering issues, the article will either need to be failed or placed on hold until after April 5. I did not anticipate the article would take so long to get reviewed (though I am glad that it has been reviewed). Either way, please let us/me know what still needs to be done in order to get this article to GA class, if it is still not ready. Thegreatdr (talk) 18:57, 29 March 2008 (UTC)

Re: Your comment on User_talk:Bam123456789

You stated "Actually, you should not check raw signature if you have a link to your talk page, which you do. Southern Illinois SKYWARN (talk) 15:46, 30 March 2008 (UTC)" - in actual fact, checking the raw signature option forces the software to parse the text in the signature box as raw wikimarkup for the signature. If left unchecked, it treats the text in the box as the text you want the link to your userpage to be shown as, but affects nothing else. In this case, for the signature that User:Bam123456789 wishes to use, that checkbox must be checked for it to work. I hope I haven't sounded too harsh, if I did, I didn't mean to. I hope this clarifies things. :) Stwalkerstertalk ] 16:04, 30 March 2008 (UTC)

Portals

I'm working on a non-tropical storms portal at User:Juliancolton/Sandbox2. Do you think we should start working on a severe weather portal? Juliancolton The storm still blows... 13:29, 3 April 2008 (UTC)

Thanks! I briefly moved it to mainspace, but a few users from the WPTC though I should perfect it further. Juliancolton The storm still blows... 14:00, 5 April 2008 (UTC)

Sorry

Hi there, i'm sorry for adding the severe weather watches for April 3, 2008. I did not know that these watches are not notable as of yet. I guess the information on severe weather will be added to the Tornadoes of 2008, only if the severe storms have already occured in these locations? how often does that {{StormWatch}} template used on this tornado page? Take care, from Northern Ontario, Canada where there's still lots and lots of snow on the ground, which is very unusual for this time of year!

Just a reminder

It's been more than seven days since you placed my GA nomination of 1939 California tropical storm on hold. Please return and make a decision about the nomination. Just a reminder. Thank you. Miss Madeline | Talk to Madeline 16:34, 6 April 2008 (UTC)

It's all right to forget something once in a while. You're all right. Miss Madeline | Talk to Madeline 16:47, 6 April 2008 (UTC)
Also, you left User:Thegreatdr's article on-hold for over a week as well, so you might want to take a look. Just a reminder so nobody gets mad at you. ;) Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 21:29, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

Illinois photo requests

I'm recategorizing them all into specific county categories for photo requests. If the article already had a {{reqphoto}} tag on the talk page, I simply add in "Name of County, Illinois" in place of "Illinois". I'm generally not paying attention whether or not there is a photo or not on the article or not. This is a model of what's already been done in a few states, for example, Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in California. Jauerbackdude?/dude. 14:51, 12 April 2008 (UTC)

I responded to it over there. FlamingSilmaril (talk) 21:10, 13 April 2008 (UTC)

Your comment on my talk page

I'm not sure which revert you're talking about, but I always use warning templates whenever I revert vandalism made by a named account. I used to post warnings to IP pages also, but I gave up since it does little-to-no good. Groupthink (talk) 21:39, 13 April 2008 (UTC)

Mt. Carmel

Hey, I saw on the earthquake's talk page that you're from a suburb of my hometown (Princeton, Indiana)...I've been meaning to cross that rickety old bridge with my camera one of these days and take some pictures around town. Kurt Weber (Go Colts!) 20:58, 19 April 2008 (UTC)

2008 Super Tuesday tornado outbreak

Hey, sorry to bother you, but I was wondering when/if you are going to send 2008 Super Tuesday tornado outbreak to FAC. I read it again, and I can't find anything that I think would keep it from being featured. I was hoping you or JForget would nom it soon. Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 00:51, 26 April 2008 (UTC)

Great, I think you'll have no problem with it. Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 01:14, 26 April 2008 (UTC)
Ooh, don't forget to transclude the nom to WP:FAC. Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 01:59, 26 April 2008 (UTC)

Blantant violation

Could you show me an article on blantant violation. Or something related to it. I've removed stuff on my talk page before and I didn't get in trouble.

Also why would i have to resize my box theres nothing wrong with it.--Condo lence 17:29, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

I read the article about the talkpage hears what it said exactly:

On your own user talk page, you may remove others' comments, although archiving is generally preferred.

Re: FAC

Alright, I replied on the FAC page. Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 01:02, 6 May 2008 (UTC)

I understand that you're agrivated, but I hope you don't withdraw the FAC, and I even further hope that you come back from Wikibreak shortly. Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 01:52, 6 May 2008 (UTC)
Yes, I see. I truely hope that after you cool down for a couple weeks, you decide to return. You have been of excellent help to WP:SEVERE, and I don't know where the project would be without you. Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 02:25, 6 May 2008 (UTC)

Severe weather project naming conventions

Hi, I know it's been a while, and you aren't around much any more, but since you were one of the contributors to the Tornado Naming Conventions, I figured I'd drop you a line and let you know that I proposed some changes at the project talk page. Let me know what you think, if you get the time. Thanks! -RunningOnBrains 04:19, 4 February 2009 (UTC)

Comments needed

You are receiving this message because you are listed as an active participant in WikiProject Meteorology, WikiProject Severe weather, and/or WikiProject Non-tropical storms. I have made a proposal to start an official assessment page for these three projects, under the WP:METEO banner. Since this would need significant participation to work properly, I'd like input from as many interested parties as possible (even those who may not watch the project pages), so please visit the discussion here and leave your thoughts/opinions. Thanks! -RunningOnBrains 02:34, 23 February 2009 (UTC)
