We're a group of editors who strive to improve the quality of medical articles here on Wikipedia. One of our members has noticed that you are interested in editing medical articles; it's great to have a new interested editor on board. In your wiki-voyages, a few things that may be relevant to editing Wikipedia articles are:

Please leave a message on the WPMED talk page if you have any problems, suggestions, would like review of an article, need suggestions for articles to edit, or would like some collaboration when editing!
• Sourcing of medical and health-related content on Wikipedia is guided by our medical sourcing guidelines, commonly referred to as MEDRS. These guidelines typically requires recent secondary sources to support information; its application is further explained here. Primary sources (case studies, case reports, research studies) are rarely used, especially if the primary sources are produced by the organisation or individual who is promoting a claim.
• Wikipedia is a kingdom full of a wide variety of editors with different interests, skills, and knowledge. We all manage to get along through a lot of discussion that happens under the scenes and through the bold, edit, discuss editing cycle. If you encounter any problems, you can discuss it on an article's talk page or post a message on the WPMED talk page.

Excellent comment on the Project Medicine talk page

I appreciate your comment to the Project Medicine talk page about somehow bringing wikipedia med articles to the level of journal publishing. Unfortunately, it is true that most of the active editors do not regularly assess references related to the articles they are reviewing. Instead, it seems to me, other editors primary go through the existing med articles flagging them for not meeting the MEDRS guidelines. My impression is that there are very few active editors who have the skill to read journal articles and reinterpret them, and then get the info into a WP med article. As a matter of fact, I don't remember ever seeing even one edit summary that has described the insertion of such a reference. Of couse such improvements exist-I make them myself. I just don't see other editors doing it. Then we have the problem of an editor referencing original research-but there are ways around that.

Go here to see the types of edits that are being done, in realtime, to articles in Project Medicine. I just reviewed these edits and found no MEDRS references added to any of the articles. A lot of editors revert vandalism (very important) or copyedit. Best Regards,

(assuming that you're referring to me) I simply made an easily-verifiable change regarding my title, and added a more reliable source for my membership in ASCI. I thought this would be uncontroversial, but I acknowledge that I probably should've just suggested the edits. If there are any concerns about the content, please revert. I have been tempted to make other changes, because aspects of my work that I consider notable are not mentioned, but I recognize the obvious COI and will suggest edits here in future, rather than making them myself - thanks for catching my attention on this point. soupvector (talk) 02:34, 12 October 2015 (UTC)

Really, when changes are simple and factual, of course you can edit the article: as long as possible CoI is declared, it's absolutely fine. But you're right about the risk of sniping. It's a nice image, simpler than the others (thus less susceptible to error). The labels are in Latin, which is odd - not even doctors (in the USA, at least) use the Latin "os" or Latin spellings, in general. English labels might be better. If you like, I could edit this. This is a very nice diagram, with two minor problems that relate to the inner curve (from the step where the Trophozoites divide): for one thing, there are no arrows to indicate which way that curve is flowing (minor problem, as one can guess, but we should not have to guess - and the color gradient on the curve doesn't help that much); secondly, the invasion step ("Trophozoites invade the intestinal mucosa") is pointing to the ascending colon, whereas the "migrate" step (2 steps prior) is pointing to the descending colon - which is confusing since stool passes from the ascending colon to the descending colon, not the other way around. To fix the latter, I think one would need to reverse much of the figure. — soupvector 21:58, 13 October 2015 (UTC)

Saw your talk

Hey, just wanted to tell you I saw your talk at WikiConference USA on Youtube, and it was really good. One of the points you brought up is a need to create a simple way to submit image to Commons. I've recently applied for a grant to create this type of process at meta:Grants:IEG/Health images for all. I was primarily aiming at organizations, but if you think there is a will among individual academics to donate images I am willing to help set up the page for that as well. If all goes well I will likely start drafting the site in a little over a week, and have a first iteration of the page ready in July/August. I'd be very happy to get some of your input on what is needed, and if you are willing to put me in touch with anyone who wishes to donate images don't hesitate to mail me. Hi, Stuart Ray! You should know, please. Russia has some priority. In 1941, prof. Nikolay Artemov monograph "Bee venom, its physiological properties and therapeutic use" was published by the USSR Academy of Sciences. In 1957, the USSR Ministry of Health sanctioned use of bee venom to treat certain ailments. It was the Instruction for Bee Sting Venom Apitherapy. N. M. Artemov (with Prof. G. P. Zaytsev from 2nd MSMI) is the author of The Instruction. See also Apitherapy (in Russian) in Great Russian Encyclopedia, and Bee Venom (in Russian) in Soviet Big Medical Encyclopedia. I have added a systematic review with a similar message, and (again) removed the image of ribavirin since that seems like too much emphasis for a drug not approved for this indication. Without large RCTs, experience with HEV (and HBV) is cautionary - any maneuver can look like it works when you have a nonzero spontaneous (untreated) rate of resolution. — soupvector (talk) 13:14, 23 August 2019 (UTC)

Dengue fever

Hi soupvector,

I see you have edited Wikipedia:VideoWiki/Dengue fever but this hasn't actually published your changes. File:Wikipedia-VideoWiki-Dengue fever.webm hasn't had changes to it since July. Could you publish your changes please. When you do, it looks like VideoWiki will make the upload to Commons with your Commons account. Three C-class articles

Dear Soup,

I hope you're doing well and staying busy since Stockholm. I was thinking about leaning into three articles over the next couple of months that are c-class and related. antibiotic, antiseptic, and antimicrobial. Also considering if we should look at hygiene and disinfectant (which is low priority to all other articles but should be high priority to WPMED). Take a peek at the page view analysis. You can see what happened when the antibacterial page was renamed to antibiotic. At first, I just wanted to move some c-class articles to b-class but then I asked myself, if a WASH worker in a developing nation was information seeking, could they find it easily on wikipedia? I don't think so. Could we better name, structure, and linkk these articles to advance the SDGs? Appreciate your input to help me develop some priorities and point me to best resources. A WP:MED editor pulls yet another unsourced stub from the pile, thrilled by its immense potential.

Backlog of the month
This month I'm trying out a new element of the newsletter – a backlog of the month. The WikiProject Medicine template is on the talk page of 44,944 articles, of which 18,111 have some kind of maintenance tag on them, indicating problems large or small. Each month, I'll highlight some small task to get you out of your normal editing focus and chip away at the project's massive maintenance backlogs. I'll aim for tasks that can be worked on in small chunks, perhaps on days when you can't focus on big problems, or have 15 minutes to burn at your computer.

The first backlog of the month will be the 410 medicine articles that cite no sources. These tend to be lower-traffic topics. Some just need verification that the topic actually exists, along with a quick reference. Others are best redirected to more substantial pages, or even brought to AfD. Feel free to scroll through the list for topics that interest you, or just start at the top. This feature will last as long as folks are interested enough to engage with it. If you see backlogs that would be a good fit, post them here. Thanks all, and happy referencing!

That doesn't parse for me, because this doesn't depict the process for making modRNA, it illustrates the way mRNA (including modRNA) can generate protein. How about, "A ribosome translates mRNA (modified to reduce inflammation, i.e. modRNA) into the encoded protein"? — soupvector (talk) 18:18, 9 December 2020 (UTC)

2020 is behind us at last. Off Wikipedia, the year has been trying. On Wikipedia, I hope you've found the time you spent here fulfilling and diverting. I've taken the opportunity to place a few end-of-year statistics for reflection below. If you think of any data that would be useful to find (or begin gathering) to gauge the project's success, please let me know. With that, here is what's happening around the project:

Year in Review
With 2020 now in the rear view mirror, a few numbers to give a sense of where our project is at: In 2020 we added a record number of medicine articles (i.e. articles with the WP:MED tag on their talk pages), starting the year with 41,243 and ending with 45,247. The ~4,000 new articles is well above the norm, presumably due to new covid-related articles. In terms of reviewed content, we added three featured articles (Dementia with Lewy bodies, Complete blood count, and Buruli ulcer), and lost three to the ravages of time, leaving our total at 66. We also added 42 newly reviewed good articles from 23 different nominators, bringing our total to 296. See a full list of reviewed content from 2020 here. Outside of reviewed content our contributions are more challenging to measure. I'm sure much our time was spent making small improvements, guiding new editors, removing junk from articles, and dealing with the raging global pandemic (on and off the site). I am interested in ways we can quantify and assess our project's progress going forward, so if anyone has ideas for other data we could find or collect, do let me know.

Other notes

• The WMF's Community Wishlist Survey has ended. Results are posted here.
• If you missed it, consider reading folks' thoughts on helping new editors at this recent WT:MED discussion.
• After a quieter month at the Collaboration of the Month (Dexamethasone), we'll be taking this month off. The COTM will return in February. Propose and vote on nominations here.
• Thanks to all who helped deal with last month's backlog, medicine articles that cite no sources. 28 down, 382 to go. We'll pick a new backlog next month. In the meantime, for any interested, I've posted an updated list of articles that lack sources here.

• Lung cancer will feature on the Main Page as Today's Featured Article on August 4th. Anything you can do to improve/update the article before then would be a big help to the many readers likely to see the page on that date.
• The Books namespace will be deprecated and its contents deleted. All books have been moved to subpages of Wikipedia:Books/archive so that they can be undeleted upon request after the namespace is gone. There are around two dozen medicine-related books (14 tagged with WP:MED). If you wish to keep any, you are welcome to move it to your userspace.

• WP:URFA/2020 is reviewing and updating FAs that were promoted long ago. Several medicine-related FAs are on the list. Noting current work below. Feel free to jump in and help wherever you're interested:
  • Acute myeloid leukemia (promoted in 2006) is getting a thorough update led by Tom (LT) and Spicy. Help is welcome.
  • Influenza (promoted in 2006) was updated by Velayinosu and is awaiting review.
  • Lung cancer (promoted in 2007) was updated by Axl, Graham Beards, and JenOttawa in preparation for a now-aborted run as WP:TFA.
  • Autism (2007 promotion) and Major depressive disorder (2008 promotion) have requests for featured article reviews on their talk pages.
  • I believe the oldest unreviewed medicine-related FAs are Michael Woodruff (2006 promotion), Bacteria (2006 promotion), and Coeliac disease (2008 promotion). These are likely to receive some attention soon.

Invitation to take part in a survey about medical topics on Wikipedia

Dear fellow editor,

I am Piotr Konieczny, a sociologist of new media at Hanyang University (and User:Piotrus on Wikipedia). I would like to better understand Wikipedia's volunteers who edit medical topics, many associated with the WikiProject Medicine, and known to create some of the highest quality content on Wikipedia. I hope that the lessons I can learn from you that I will present to the academic audience will benefit both the WikiProject Medicine (improving your understanding of yourself and helping to promote it and attract new volunteers) and the wider world of medical volunteering and academia. Open access copy of the resulting research will be made available at WikiProject's Medicine upon the completion of the project.

All questions are optional. The survey is divided into 4 parts: 1 - Brief description of yourself; 2 - Questions about your volunteering; 3 - Questions about WikiProject Medicine and 4 - Questions about Wikipedia's coverage of medical topics.

Please note that by filling out this questionnaire, you consent to participate in this research. The survey is anonymous and all personal details relevant to your experience will be kept private and will not be transferred to any third party.

WP:MED News

• Since last newsletter, frightfully few medicine articles have passed through our main content review processes, Good Article and Featured Article. While we can agree there's more to editing than chasing bronze stars and green blobs, it would be nice to see the catalog of "Good" and "Featured" medicine articles growing rather than just aging. If you're interested in taking on a project but would like some light guidance or a helping hand, feel free to post your plans at WT:MED and you may find others willing to join.
• An ongoing effort seeks to review/update our oldest featured articles. Major depressive disorder, Lung cancer, and Schizophrenia are next on the chopping block (so to speak). If you're interested in helping to update any, please post at WT:MED or at those articles' talk pages. If you're new to the FA process, I'd encourage you to enlist the help of someone(s) who has been through the process before, as they can help clarify expectations and save you time.
• Got a minute? Running low on inspiration/motivation and need a simple task? Check out the 247 medicine articles tagged as citing no sources!

• The Reading/Web team has rolled out a new skin called "Vector 2022" that will soon become the default. Opt-in in your Preferences to try it out. As with any visual update, it'll take some getting used to. If you hate it, don't panic; once it becomes default you'll still be able to opt-out in your Preferences.
• The folks who brought us the nifty "Reply" button have now rolled out a "Subscribe" button to be notified of comments in a particular thread. I believe it's turned on for everyone now. Try it on a busy talk page (e.g. WT:MED).
• Voting is open for the community nominees to the WMF Board of Trustees, until September 6th.

After creating the draft and seeing the notice that AfC review might take months - and before your deletion appeared - I copied the article's content into article space because I thought the refs did establish notability. Apologies if this (my good faith copy-paste prior to seeing your decision) generates confusion but a professor, department chair, and past president of a national professional organization seems notable. — soupvector (talk) 21:41, 3 March 2023 (UTC)

Not sure what to do now with the article space version - hoping that after consideration you or others seeing this might recognize the notability. You're experience enough that if you feel confident standing by your work in moving the article to the mainspace, I won't challenge it. You made a good faith decision, one dozen if not hundreds of editors do daily. I wouldn't worry about it!
